I mean that’s been a problem since that terrible ending at Mani when Hogan squashed Yokozuna after he won the title off of Bret
Hogan literally talked Vince into the idea that “they” NEEDED to send the fans home happy so booked himself to win back the title from the monster heel
…and then proceeded to sit out Summerslam or doing anything at all until Vince had enough and had him revenge squashed by Yokozuna and released

Always remember unless under pressure, Vince will generally do his own thing with the only interference being making sure it “fits” the casual and public appeal for being PG and being Publicly Traded business (those being everything he does post Ruthless Aggression Era
      Further examples:
It took the WHOLE McMahon family to get him to drop his desire for an incest angle between either him and Steph or Shane and Steph, mind you this was the Attitude Era so it was just his family instead of those previously mentioned
More recent one is Moxley having to vehemently state to never do a promo Vince wanted him to do during his final run as Dean because it was likely to get WWE MASSIVE heat with sponsors and the like
His booking regarding Trips vs Booker and then MUCH later Heel Daniel vs Kofi which no matter WHAT they try to say came off COMPLETELY racist
And as you stated Vince’s characters aren’t even that good longterm, even short term
Austin came up with Stone Cold post WCW and during his brief time in ECW, Vince gave us The Ringmaster
The Rock was from Dwayne’s legit issues with the fans and support from Farooq and The Nation of Domination, Vince created the greatly fan hated Maivia
Even Hogan developed his skills in the ring and mic through his time in NJPW and AWA, Vince just provided a bigger platform and had him use a much “stereotypical style”

I'll forever be baffled how WWE didn't go with the story that I was 100% sure they were going with. Like, this wasn't even fantasy booking. I was genuinely convinced that this was where they were going and that I'd caught the hints and cracked the code. It was just so perfectly, specifically set up.
When Cena was forced to join Nexus, he initially responded by beating up Nexus members and saying that he was gonna destroy them from the inside or something. Didn't really make sense, but whatever. But then the Anonymous Raw General Manager(aka the stupid laptop read by Cole) stated that being part of the Nexus meant that he had to follow the orders of their leader, and as the Nexus recognized Wade Barrett as the leader, Cena would be forced to obey him. Or be fired? Or something.
Anyway, I thought this was a GIANT foreshadowing of an awesome storyline. The laptop was so specific. Cena had to follow Barrett because the Nexus RECOGNIZED him as their leader! So I was so sure that we were getting a storyline where Cena would go full on dark, evil Cena, Nexus shirt and all, but then in being evil Super Cena and bringing endless success to the Nexus, the Nexus members would begin to follow HIM and recognize Cena as their actual leader.
Then once Cena officially became the leader of the Nexus(via one-on-one or a civil war Survivor Series match or something), boom swerve, turns out it was all a giant ruse by Cena to no longer have to answer to anyone and to also have the power to disband and thereby destroy the Nexus from the inside, just like he always wanted.
Could have also led to further storylines where certain faces(like face Orton, etc) were none too happy about all the Nexus shenanigans Cena had been imposing on them, and weren't about to just forgive him for what he'd done.
But, instead, we got the typical Cena Wins LOL story we'd gotten endless times by that point(and would again for a while), and I pretty much threw my hands up and tapped out of wrestling until CM Punk's big singles push.

Hell even let him be in a 3v1. Eat a chairshiot for a DQ. Then somehow beat gabriel. And then eat the pin to wade. He would look strong as hell and the Nexus still go over since they won 7v7 AND Barrett could go on and on about how he pinned cena.
But no he had to eat a DDT on the exposed floor and win 2v1 😂

The thing I don't understand about the merch thing is that you could've had it just be a one time thing where Cena came out in full nexus attire. He could've ripped it off in frustration and right before he takes off the armband, Wade could've stopped him and it turns into a story thing where he has to rep the armband to show his loyal fans and supporters that underneath all those flashy colors; He belongs to Nexus.

    • @raphaeljackson7
      @raphaeljackson7 ปีที่แล้ว

That isn't really how merchandising works. Especially when it comes to a fandom-based good. Cena supporters wouldn't gravitate to something Cena himself was actively against. No, it's not because they bought into kayfabe, but rather, the shirt itself was counterintuitive to what they would want.
Another thing that Wade did not mention is the fact that Nexus were a thing during the time he debuted the purple shirt, and prior to his joining them. Cena joining Nexus was not in the initial plans from what I could see. Otherwise, certain tweaks in the order of events would have been implemented.
Merchandising also needs repeated exposure for situations like these. That's what Barrett himself was explaining when he mentioned the basic design.

My GF at the time saw the Nexus stuff having never watched wrestling before and got hooked. She thought the fact that they were 7 geeks that couldn't get anything accomplished without 6 other guys beating everyone up for them was so enraging. And then they started beating up the older guys and she HATED them. Hated them. She'd yell over their promos that they weren't men. She'd ask me how they were allowed to get away with cheating like this Instead of just being fired, but then clarify she meant *after* they got their asses kicked first.
She watched Summerslam and she was so happy that Nexus got their shit kicked in, and then never cared about them again.
She liked a few guys like Edge and Orton after having watched that summer, so for the next year or two, she'd keep up what they were doing, but up to Summerslam she was watching every minute of every show, the good guy won, she cheered, and was done.
They made a new casual fan for a few years, but they were in the process of making a pretty hardcore one if they didn't tell her "okay that story's over now, here's another one." She was in for that story, they gave her the payoff, she said "this has been fun, I'll call you" to the show as a whole.

@theonlygoodonehere2259 now you're arguing tiny semantics. The point is that she experienced the match as them getting their shit kicked in and was done.
You can go see a movie where the good guy destroys the bad guy and decide "I don't ever need to see sequels to this, that was enough" and then the person next to you to explain away all the reasons why really all the ways the bad guy lost was actually not that definitive, but if you have to do that, you're just the one who's doing the job the movie was supposed to do, and you're not gonna talk a person into changing their emotional experience of what just happened by explaining all these little things.
Like, she wasn't gonna watch them all get their comeuppance and then get talked into how they didn't really. They did. She saw it, she cheered she moved on. There was no "but no no really the bad guys are still bad" when you just saw them get wedgies and shoved in lockers and laughed at and did nothing about it.

To be fair. I do get the decision to make the nexus lose in terms of business. Because as a child I absolutely hated the nexus and idolized Cena. A lot of us who were kids around that time did. And I know for a fact that a lot of us (who were children at the time) would have been LIVID had the nexus won. So I get wanting to give it a “happy ending” because let’s not forget, they were the supposed bad guys. However my only issue is the trajectory of Wade’s career AFTER the loss. I really felt like he was world champ material and they dropped the ball on him.

Dude- Hearing Barrett HIMSELF talk about this feels like an itch that hasn't been scratched since this happened. I never heard anything of Barrett or any of the other Nexus guys' thoughts about it. That particular feud holds really special meaning to me because that's THEE actual storyline or moment that just pretty much made me realize that watching wrestling was a frustrating past time for me. I had to quit and it just made me realize that it's not a thing that is done the way I enjoyed it as a kid. And that's ok. It only means it's just something that is not for me anymore.
There was also a feeling of resentment because if I care, it's because I appreciate it as a form of entertainment. But I also know there are writers involved and people who plan the entertainment. And it was clear that the only and main goal of WWE as a company was to shine the light on nothing BUT Cena. And John Cena wears that same shirt, except the shirt is blue instead of yellow. Or red. Or purple. Or green. Or any other color EXCEPT yellow. And it changes on a weekly basis. The shops can sell all 7 different colors of the John Cena Nexus shirt. Now Cena's still getting his 30%, on 7 new shirts. Nexus still get their 5% split 7 ways, but they'll also see an increase in sales as people want ALL the colors. And you could do the same thing with the hats, and armbands too. You could even make the rally towels that he has, with the N logo, but in cena colors.

The intrigue of the NWO was that they were wrecking everyone and they seemed untouchable for 18 months. Sting vs Hogan at Starcade 1997 was WCW's biggest match and highest PPV buyrate. And the reason why Sting vs Hogan was so big because Sting was the only one able to stand against the threat. The fans saw 18 months of the NWO destroying everyone and when Sting beat Hogan it was huge.
WWE could have built Nexus as a dominant force for a year and CM Punk or Daniel Bryan could gained a lot of momentum if they were the one to put and end to Barret's WWE title run and WWE could have built the Nexus wrestlers as mid card heels and Barret as a main event heel while also putting over wrestlers like CM Punk or Daniel Bryan in the main event and maybe Dolph Ziggler and others as mid card faces.

"Summer Slam needs a happy ending" is a BS reason because that's not even true. Just the year prior, CM Punk beat Jeff Hardy (always the fan favourite) in the main event. And in 2006, Edge beat John Cena in the main event. And how many Summer Slams have happened since then that have ended with a heel standing tall? Del Rio cashed in on CM Punk in 2011, Orton cashed in on Bryan in 2013, Brock took Cena to Suplex City in 2014, Lesnar busted open Orton in 2016 so they ended the match, Brock was still a heel in the 4 way in 2017, The Fiend beat Braun Strowman in 2020, Reigns beat Cena in 2021, Reigns beat Lesnar in 2022, and Reigns beat Jey Uso this year.
But the people need to go home happy, right?
It's not just about making the fans happy, it has to make sense. When the good guy wins and it doesn't make sense, that's a problem. Seth Rollins vs The Fiend at Hell in a Cell for example. And even on the flip side, Cody winning at WrestleMania this year would have been a huge, feel-good moment, and it would have made sense. But nah, Roman's gotta hit 1000 days and he's only defended his title once since WrestleMania, which was 5 months ago. And when you pull stunts like that, the fans lose faith in the product. I stopped watching the TV shows in 2018 and then stopped altogether in 2021, came back when Triple H took over, Lost faith when Cody lost at WrestleMania, and stopped watching the TV shows again a few weeks ago because it's gotten so bad.
Make it make sense, WWE. :)

They beat up Cena but he manages to eliminate Nexus members but he keeps taking more damage and by the time it's 2 on 1, Gabriel and Barrett, Cena is running on fumes. You have Cena barely manage to eliminate Gabriel and immediately Barrett comes in, elbow to the back of Cena's head, Winds of change, 1-2-3. Nexus look good as they beat out 6 WWE superstars, you can make falls based pn "rookie mistakes" and Cena manages to survive 6 men, but he just ran out of steam

He's a corporate creature, and I don't necessarily mean that as a criticism.
He has a brand (John Cena) linked to a company (WWE or whoever is producing his movie/TV) and in his/their minds, what is best for the company is best for John Cena, and when in doubt, what is best for John Cena is best for the company.
It doesn't mean his charity stuff isn't genuine or indeed that he's a horrible human being, but he's someone who has benefitted from mooring his ship to an entity and that's resulted in them both building much of the company in or around his image and legacy, and him happily dedicating himself to that company because on the whole they've made him very successful.
But at the same time it does mean that he's always going to be looking out for the interests of John Cena and the WWE in the event that there's a conflict or a decision to be made, whether that's burying the Nexus so he can keep being big match John, or apologising for daring to suggest Taiwan is a separate entity to China, or indeed being perfectly happy to use his own engagement to whichever Bella it was on national TV for the sake of pushing ratings when any fool could see that it wasn't a relationship which was exactly stable or healthy.

After he was “fired” he kept attacking them and basically burying them. Like you’re telling me this one guy can constantly beat 6 guys. And then in the end he literally buried Barrett under a pile of chairs. Cena was booked way too strong and it destroyed their momentum and that was as high in the card as most of them ever went. As far as the merchandise thing goes cena was only in the nexus for 7 weeks. You’re seriously that greedy that you can’t share profits for a month and a half so you can help elevate these guys who you literally stopped their momentum at summerslam?

To be fair about the merchandising thing, there's another aspect to the profits that you neglected. Wade said it himself that if he had a 5% cut in his contract, he'd get 5% and WWE would get the rest. That means if John Cena, possibly their biggest merch mover since Austin, was taking a smaller cut, THEY would be taking a smaller cut, and they couldn't have that.
Could Cena have put his foot down and told the brass he was going to commit to the storyline and wear the 'N' shirt to help elevate the Nexus? Sure. However, let's not just say it only came down to Cena's greed. There were other pockets getting lined and other people who needed to get paid.

On the other hand, Cena winning didn't do anything positive to him (because he just didn't need that win), and it damaged Nexus so hard that they never really recovered from that.
Now I don't think that was Cena's doing because if Vince had seen huge potential in those guys, he wouldn't have cared about what Cena wanted. The Nexus was a unified group with a common goal. Team WWE was a group of seven guys just thrown together with overblown egos. The buildup to the match had Jericho and Edge fighting with each other, and there may have been other infighting, I can't recall. During the match, WWE team refuses to help each other out and get in each other's way, while Nexus systemically keep each other fresh and eliminate the opposition until they get their usual numbers advantage, then they dominate as per usual.
