Well after that, I am speechless, no words are enough to describe that performance... it was way beyond the point where the term genius applies.. this guy was a super MEGA Freak of a genius.... How on earth does he get such amazing tone and volume from that slide, LOL and I thought Bob Brozman was a complete original.
This is actually quite incredible - what imaginative playing and his approach to the guitar is... well I’ve never seen anything like this... Right so this was a different time and the music is of a different area, but he is like the “Jimi Hendrix” of that time, doing things you normally wouldn’t - and it is so musical and brilliant- just amazing!
it’s funny i always thought there was harp in hawaiian music, but it’s just a thumb strum on the classical guitar, i never even noticed i used to think it was a harp till i saw this!
If this clip is really from 1932, then it predates the ability to fake it by syncing to a previously-made recording. And looking at Mr. Smeck's hands (what bar control!) it looks absolutely live. Roy Smeck was a vaudeville guy who really could just jump onstage and render a performance that surpasses what mortal men can do. I read that he played 14-16 hours a day, because he had jaw-dropping showcases on banjo, ukulele and standard guitar as well as the Hawaiian style. His only equal on Hawaiian guitar was, of course, the great Sol Hoopii.
I love that spongebob incorporated such great music in its show
That’s essentially just Hawaiian lap steel music
Brilliant would be a bit of understatement.
Watching this on acid is amazing man!🤘
Never heard of this guy until today. Quite the virtuoso.
wow what a rare clip. Roy outlived most of his contemporaries of the period, died in the 1990s.

His playing fits in just right with those times, and he was GOOD !
Did you bring your guitar? Then he happens to pull out a Gibson Roy Smeck Radio Grande. Indeed!
wow! makes it look easy too!

This guy was Eddy Van Halen’s Sensei 😂
Nick Lukas made the guitar an out front instrument before sound film.
It just so happened that the guitar he was given was open tuned Hawaiian.
Damn.

I believe that he in A major tuning and gets his embellished chords with slants. There is some fine technique mixed in with overwrought shtick.
Oh shut up you boring fart!
Shtick? Play something for us ass-hat
Is he really just using a flat top guitar? Interesting, I thought a weisennborn guitar would be used to produce this sound.
Nice harmonics...just wondering...wasn't Reefer Madness released around the same time?
anybody knows how he tuned his guitar for this song?
***** rock on brother
Open D?
It's called slack key.
+Foo Hoe Vincent Low He didn't, because he did NOT bring his guitar to play this song!
are you serious?
Soo-poyb!
Is-it a C6th or G high bass tuning ?
No he used an A,7tuning
Sounds like spongebob music😅
Haha, yeah..i always though SpongeBob music sounded like THIS
It's inspired by Roy and Tiny Tim
Jan Van Halen.....Eddie's father
Spongebob
"Boy, one guitar coming up" Black man comences to beat MC with guitar.
The woke mafia never sleeps, do they?.
