In the 1970s I was invited to the city lit one evening to hear a talk by maths sister . To have a voice like that and to see the film of kath with her colleagues around Barbarolli. Such a fun loving lady . With the most special voice of all time
VOCE STUPENDA!!!! VERY RICH VOICE FROM BOTTOM TO THE TOP. HIS OPENING ON HIS TOP NOTES ARE SO RICH AND FULL CHIARO SCURO SOUND. NO CONSTRICTION VERY FREE AND RICH AND CLARITY OF THE VOWELS. WOOOOOOW!!!!

Guelfi had a great voice, he sang Alfio in the DGG recording of "Cavalleria rusticana" with Bergonzi and Cossotto, conducted by Herbert Von Karajan - well worth listening to!
Yet another in the seeemingly endless list of superb baritones available in the 60's and 70's with big-time Verdi voices of beauty and power, who could also sing with taste and character. How pathetic the present roster of "great" baritones seems by comparison.
I prefer Giorgio Zancanaro, who has a much smaller voice but better technique. Zancanaro's overtone line is much better connected. Cleaner phase. Guelfi is a bit untidy here. Great voice but forces the chest in a bit too much here for my liking.
No way. Guelfi had a fully developped voice unlike Zancanaro. And what are you talking about when you say "forcing the chest"? Guelfi releases the air perfectly here he is not "forcing" anything.
@@umaratabilgi161 Guelfi is very good here, no doubt. However, his vowels are not perfectly clear and when he gets to the forte, he does push a bit too much air out. When you listen to Zancanaro, his vowels are as clear as speech. His breath economy is a bit better than Guelfi's. Maybe "forcing the chest" is not the best way to think about Guelfi's singing here, but there is a bit of an issue with his production that I can hear but can't describe to you clearly.... On the other hand, Zancanaro is able to sing straight up and forward even close to the top. He barely covers his sound at all, which you may like or not. I would not say Zancanaro's voice is not developed. He just doesn't have to cover and chooses not to cover, except for maybe the top two semitones of his range. Both are great voices, pleasure to listen to.
stoleczna14 Zancanaro covers too. Above e natural every baritone covers. It's just that Zancanaro does it bad and loses clarity. You are being fooled by the compressed sounds of the recordings. Guelfi's voice is much more released and natural then Zancanaro
@@umaratabilgi161 Yup, exactly that, Guelfi’s voice had more of everything.. it’s just that smaller voices record better and bigger ones worse. The mic compresses the smaller sound, and because the voice also has less darkness compared to Guelfi, it sounds clearer, but if heard live where volume is not equated and the sound is not compressed to be heard as more focused, you’d be able to hear Guelfi is not only larger and darker, but with more squillo too..
It's true that you should hear those voices live to judge. It's also true however that guelfi makes his voice darker and fatter than he should and loses ease and control expecially in his top range. Here he's in very good shape anyway and it's less evident.

M'hai fatto piangere, Antonio!
Grande!!! 😭😭😭🤧
Bellissima storia.
Forse a Verona cambiava treno per Bolzano dove viveva!
One of the greatest baritones and largest voices of his time, a 'lion on stage', as Aprile Millo called him. Bravissimo maestro.
LOL
HHAHAHAHAHHA
🤣
AHAHAHAHHAHAHA
- Hai proprio ragione😂
Words simply fail me. Brilliant

A hugely underated Great!
4:23 wow
Now Placido Domingo, is ruining this aria.
IMMENSO !
bodiloto's hater Che Milnes!! 😆
bodiloto's hater che un dramatico!!! Hahaha!!
bodiloto's hater Anybody with functioning ears who heard them live, no mic, will tell you otherwise

I wish someone told me about this baritone sooner. What a full-bodied sound.
@@Tadpoletofrogs I didn't know Ruffo was a teacher. Did he have any other famous student?

Hvorostovsky seams Guelfi's kitten
A flea on the kitten
I think we should be kinder to Hvorostovsky. Sure, he didn't have the natural instrument of Guelfi but he did deliver some very moving performances.

The singing is outstanding! What an instrument! Every singer should have a great instrument!
E inmensogrande😮
Splendida Performance!!! Grazie

Yes, wonderful recording. For me he is the only Alfio. Karajan’s is my favourite Cav and Pag. A pity he didn’t make more commercial recordings.
Another great Singer, overshadowed by more famous names, sadly
The good ol real baritone days
MERAVIGLIAAAA!!
Bravo
Un bombordamento..
