As an American, what we fail to realize is that soccer chants everywhere else and especially in the UK are not only directed at the opposing teams fans but directed at and meant to be heard by the opposing players themselves too. Meaning they are much more impactful, funny, harsh, and add to the sense of competition. In the States we seem to think that chants are meant to just be heard by fellow fans in the stadium and are just positive and encouraging dog whistles to them. It may have something to do with the fact that, with the US being so large, the amount of away/visiting team fans at most pro games are a tiny fraction of the people in attendance. So chanting to opposing fans in the stadium feels sort of pointless compared to just celebrating with the majority 90% that are also fans of your team. Still we gotta do better than this.
I see. I hate such comparisons that just mock American chants. I think different places embrace football fan culture differently and that should be respected. English chants are not superior to American ones. Just depends on how popular the game is and how fans see chanting.
