I think this was the first piece of SVR's music that I heard and loved as a child well before I had any interest in or understanding of current affairs and now he is one of my favourite composers and I am moved by his first symphony and the sad story that underlies the first performance.
May he inspire other composers to disregard criticism of that nature and may he rest in peace

I love this piece of music!

So do I. It is part of Rachmanninoff's first symphony (as you probably know) which was very hurtfully cricised by a man named Caesar Cui who is almost forgotten today. Thank goodness the music lived on

The doom laden conclusion of the symphony is terrific too.

The are several great recordings of Rachmaninov's 1st Symphony: Ashkenazy/Concertgebouw Orchestra, Pletnev/Russian National Orchestra and Ormandy/Philadelphia Orchestra (Rachmaninov's favourite orchestra, the composer once said), to name a few. More recently, an excellent crop of recordings includes Petrenko/Royal Liverpoool Philharmonic, Noseda with the BBC Philharmonic and Slatkin with the Detroit SO.I believe the closest fit to the recording used for Panorama in the 60's is that by Sanderling/Leningrad Philharmonic. At the time, there would have been few to choose from unless the Beeb resorted to one of their own orchestras to provide a few bars especially for Panorama. Another near fit contender would be Svetlanov/USSR State Symphony Orchestra, but that was recorded in the early 70's - too early for use in the late 60's. Ormandy's recording would have been available at the time, but the tempo for the finale's theme is quicker than on the chosen Panorama recording. Sanderling's recording is available as an iTunes download at time of writing, as part of the album series 'Sanderling, the Soviet Years (Vol. 1).

Transports me back to short trousers linoleum on the living room floor, the coal fire as the only source of heat in the house and just before bed time Panorama comes on the Baird 19" 405 line black and white steam telly. Encyclopaedia Britannica salesman at the dinner table signing big bruv up and Dad on a stool in front of the fire. He gets up to put a few more coals on the fire and Tommy removes his stool. Dad hits floor on his arse like a ton of bricks but of course we have company so he can't go into one of his dreadful rages and chase Tommy in to the shed and beat the living daylights out of him over the coal bunker. True story. Different times folks🤣

This superb theme in spired me to check out the rest of the Rachmaninov; but it turned out that the BBC used the best part. Still a great theme tune and one that brings back memories of the world of B&W TV

Wow you are tough to please. The whole Symphony is fabulous, sounds like you are not familiar with classical music which is complex and requires you to listen to the whole work to fully appreciate it.

@@brit1066 You're wrong about my knowledge as I am a great fan of Sibelius, Grieg, Orff, R.Vaughan Williams and many others of the late-romantic & early twentieth-century period. I've been to Sibelius' house in Finland, and to Greig's in Norway. However, I am hard to please as I like a huge range of music, from 'early' to 'ambient'. For me, Sibelius' 5th is never going to be beaten for its dramatic silences at the end of the final movement, but music is a very personal thing and others will hold vastly different views!

Look this is ridiculous, I am sorry for what I said you are obviously a lover of classical, but to say that the BBC had used THE BEST PART OF THE SYMPHONY IS RIDICULOUS.
Listen to the part that follows immediately from from the fanfare it is SUPERB.

Was a heavyweight current affairs program. Lengthy interviews with Prime Ministers and other top politicians. Now what have we got? Marr on Sunday who spends more time talking and interrupting that letting his interviewee answe

It's John Morgan (1922-1988), a Welsh journalist, born in Swansea who, according to Wikipedia and other sources, worked for the BBC on programmes such as Panorama and Tonight during the 1960s, as well as writing for The New Statesman, The Spectator and The Sunday Times. Later he was also a regular on ITV's This Week. There are a couple of pictures of him in Google Images -- search for:
"john morgan" "bbc" OR "panorama" OR "tonight" OR "interview" OR "interviewed" -UFC

I doubt any programme would use such a theme now. Back then, television programmes had much better theme tunes.
