I honestly think we've come to a point wherein Lego Friends is better for building a city than Lego City. Especially when Lego City has essentially become a police state.
Friends has always objectively been better. Just now they are making less pink and purple sets so more appealing to other audiences, so the same builds, but a different colour scheme
I definitely agree that Jangbricks is the best LEGO TH-camr of all time. Also, thank you for making this video--I was astounded when Friends came out with a grocery store the year after CITY did! Friends has actually featured shopping cart storage areas before--but this one looks the best in my opinion!0
In Connecticut (where US LEGO is based, at least for now), we have can and bottle recycling at grocery stores. It’s because we have a bottle deposit, so people need a way to turn them back in and get the money. So it does translate to some places in the US.
Do you now have bottle recycling where you live in the US? On the east coast at least, basically every grocery store has soda can/bottle return. The amount you get varies by state I think, but it's around 10 cents per item.
I agree, the Friends Fresh Market set is extremely over-priced. However, exterior and interior design is superb. The functionality of the entrance is one of my favorite parts. Overall, I love this set to include for my city. Yet, I dislike that it's so overpriced. Nice comparison review, great job!
I've been trying to justify the price value of the LEGO Friends Fresh Market. I thought I was the only one who think this set is overpriced. However, it's a really excellent set. I really like the design details, functionality, and playability of this set! LEGO Friends 2023 is indeed on a new level, even in the diversity of the mini dolls.
@@ajg.9979 if you have big building block coletion alredy buit up there is always tue option of geting instructions online and then seing what your missing before ordering much reduced in price parts package. You would not belive how much you can save after the inital investment.
Lego Friends is easily the best Lego theme nowadays, it has so many great parts and building styles that can improve your Lego City in ways that Lego City could never do. I bought 2 of the City Grocery Store, the normal version and the ASDA one, but I'm much more excited to get the Friends Organic Grocery Store.
Thank you for doing this comparison. I think Friends has been getting better and better especially as they add more neutral colors to some of the builds. They have consistently had better interior details. If I ever find the city grocery on clearance for $40 or so I'll pick it up, but otherwise I would pass on it. The Friends grocery is on my must buy list.
The grocery is overpriced but it went on sale quite a bit last year, got mine for $45 but added about $80 worth of parts to make a full grocery MOC to fit inside my lego city. A lot of Friends sets have colors that are too out of place to fit inside any Lego city that is heavily populated by official modulars. You should also consider the fact that while the Friends set maybe better value for someone who is already collecting Friends, for someone who only collects regular Lego the value of minifigures is an important factor. The 5 minifigures that come with the grocery set is $25-30 by themselves if you order them separately, so getting the Friends set and populating it with minifigures makes the cost difference pretty big. I am considering getting some Friends sets to moc into buildings for my city, but planning on getting them second hand with no minifigures so I don't have to deal with them and hopefully get a better price.
I wish there would be a set (outside of Lego Movie 2) that would include some blended features from both Friends and City, maybe even mini dolls and minifigures.
Thank you for doing this comparison! My husband and I bought the City grocery store when it came out. It is adorable, and a great addition to our Lego city. But I was disappointed when the Friends Organic Grocery came out, as it was obviously better than the City one. Fortunately, my brother gave me the Friends grocery store as a birthday gift. The details and interior are much better! Now we are working on a MOC combining the two stores 😊
Very happy to see lego friends receiving the flowers they deserve. Another good thing about Friends sets: they go on sale ALL the time! I’ve bought most sets at 25-50 % off!
Bought both, the city set at the sale price, and are currently working out a mashing of them into a 32x48 modular design. From the city set, using the angled entry way and the interior design for the recycling section, shifting the front windows to the back behind hopefully a deli/drink counter. From the friends, the actual door assembly, curved windows, aisles and checkout. Also shrunk the sign element to use on the interior. Going with the green, nougat and white. The peach and orange i've phased out. Now just waiting for parts to tile and wall the whole design.
As an adult lego friends collector, Lego friends is for sure way underrated, especially the new releases! Some of the new build details are so innovative and realistic. Way more options for posability when creating displays!
I love the Friends grocery store which I managed to get slightly cheaper from Amazon. I had to customize it a bit though, like adding extra space so that I could store both trolleys. The door mechanism is so satisfying to operate, easily the best store of the 2 sets!
Having the bottle recycling as a play feature makes sense, because that's usually the first thing, kids want to do on their own. Also it's interesting to see the eggs in the refrigerator, because that's really an American thing. Overall the higher age range on Friends is probably the main reason for this huge difference, but even when Friends comes up with a 4+ set, it feels more like an actual building and less like a backdrop for the latest action movie. About the price: Here I just see Autumn's House 41730 in comparison, which has even a few pieces more and only costs 70€/$. For 100 you can with some luck get the two large ones, which makes this feel even more out of place.
I don't think I agree that eggs in the cooling section is an American thing. Here in Denmark, I have never seen eggs that weren't refrigerated in the grocery store. TBH I don't understand why you would keep eggs outside of the eggs because really why wouldn't you want to keep them fresh for the longest time possible?
@@nergregga interesting. Here in Germany they aren't refrigerated in the store, however almost everybody does it at home. In the US however eggs must be refrigerated all the time, because they wash the protective layer off.
How often do you knock stuff off your walls while filming the "going up the stairs backwards" sequences? Outtakes when? Nice and informative video! Thanks!
Lego friends is a theme that once I recently got back into Lego I kind of instantly fell into collecting alongside city just because the friends sets are so detailed and well built, and have a lot more variety in the line. Plus if I wanted to use mini figs these sets also fit mini figs pretty well, pretty much the only mod I’d have to do is make some chairs have more room for mini figs
I really like the pops of color from friends sets, and sometimes find the colors of adult geared sets to be somewhat unattractive, almost depressing. Am actually sad they seem to be nmutung the colors of some friends sets ie will pass on the international school. Do prefer the minifigures but will sometimes add the dolls. Have kids so we say they are elves. They can blend into a background add variety, and the hair pieces are usable. Tho yes prefer minifigures for sure!
I recently came out of my own dark age during Covid lockdown and you identified something I quickly picked up on. Friends is often more vibrant looking and has more variety to the structures they are putting out. City is overpriced for what it offers. It is strange, but I do think that I would be interested in getting Friends sets for model purposes, but I still find their mini-figs somewhat off putting.
Hi, thanks a lot for making this video! My family is really into Lego, my 10 year old daughter is working on her city since she was 5 and my 4 year old is equally enthusiastic on Lego play activitys with his big sister. They do have both Friends and standard Lego city sets in theyr play area so I was wondering wich one of the grocery stores displayed in your video would be better to get?
You have the best wallpaper I've ever seen. ;) Some Friends sets are very impressive. Replace some of the colors and there's tons of potential. I been patiently waiting for my daughter's birthday so we can build the Roller Disco Arcade: such a good looking set.
Not only did ASDA have their own sticker sheet for the LEGO City Grocery Store, they reduced the set to £35. I should know because I own one of their copies.
20:31 in the uk last year around Black Friday they had a version at Asda for £35 with an exclusive Asda sticker sheet to make your own Asda this was official by lego so duck bricks why don’t you get one there’s some on eBay also love the vids
Believe it or not, a few months ago, while Christmas shopping with my mother in a Kohl's, I found the Lego City Grocery Store (1 left) and when I scanned it with the price checker, it was only $48.98. And my mother also had some Kohl's cash/a coupon so she could get 10 more dollars knocked off, so she bought it and I got it for Christmas. It was sold out on the Lego website anyway. I didn't even mind that I couldn't get any VIP points for it. I think it's a cool set for a few little things (the prosthetic leg guy, the pea pod costume mini-fig, the forklift, the new corn pieces, and a lot of the other food pieces), but you're also not wrong about it's less desirable qualities; the basic outside design, the minimal inner space, etc. The Lego Friends Organic Grocery Store, I agree, is beautiful. The interior and merchandise pieces are cool, the door feature is awesome, the cart return it a nice touch, and the mini-fig Jordin I'd really like to own (a new character with vitiligo is interesting). There's also Autumn (character with missing half her arm) but she's in a few other sets. Jordin is in just this one (so far). Hoping she'll be in other sets in the future. But yeah, as soon as I saw this on the website for the first time, I was shocked by the price. $90? I thought it looked more like $50 or $60. I was mainly comparing it to the other set I was really looking at; 'Autumn's House' which is $70. It's a beautiful farm house and I would say the price is fair, I just couldn't believe that the Grocery Store was more. The Grocery Store is the only Lego City set I have. But I have several Lego Friends sets. I'm just glad that my mother didn't have to spend a lot on the Lego City Grocery Store (if it had been at the full price, she most likely wouldn't have bought it). As for the Lego Friends Organic Grocery Store, I still want it but I might try to wait and see if the price goes down, or it goes on sale somewhere, or I could use some VIP points to knock a few bucks off. Thank u for your comparison and analysis of both.
hey, Comeon now, you know what the corporate overlords are going to be saying about the pricing differences between regions. Lets sing it as if it were Gospel music: Supply Chain Issues!
The thing is with the Asda stickers, the city grocery store looks nothing like any Asda as they usually have large glass roofs and use a lighter green palette.
When did this practice of "tiling up" the floors of building sets start? It seems so counterintuitive: "We have this system of studs that hold everything together and signify our product's identity - let's cover them all up!" And now I hear they then include special pieces to have some studs on the tiles after all AND that it drives up the price!?
Michigan Resident here! We've got bottle returns, as any carbonated drink has a .10c deposit charge that you pay (per individual container) that you can return the container and get your .10c back!
Lol america has those recyclable machines in stores. I've been using them for 15+ years now here in New York. I love the friends grocery store set wayy more though. I'm getting both still.

Lego Friends is such a weird theme, because it has so many great concepts and builds that I would love to incorporate for my city, but the minidolls and vehicles don't really appeal to me. It's just weird that Friends has so many great "city-life" sets that mesh well with things like Modulars but doesnt have minifigures, while City is just emergency services and occasionally random subthemes (farms, space, etc) that don't mesh as well with a pre-existing city yet contain minifigures

i like the food pieces i get in lego city sets better than i do in lego friends, but I do have more lego friend sets because of my girls. I think between these 2 sets the lego friends is better., but like you said it is way overprice im waiting for it to go on sale. with taxes this comes out to 100 where i live
i defined agree theyre overpriced. for 80-90 dollars you couldve gotten that big lego friends treehouse they made for their 10th anniversary. if i could control the price id make both of them like 40-50 bucks at most
There's another 1:1 comparison to be made: City 60386 Recycling Truck vs Friends 41712 Recycling Truck. That City set is another incredibly over-priced set...
If anything, it shows that they are showing a greater level of care for girl's sensibilities when developing sets than with a boy's. Boys just want to be badass firemen 😝
“Danish countries…” yep, I meant European countries, my bad! Slip of the tongue while I was talking too fast 😅
Okay all good Chris 👍
Also "EV vehicle". Err... the V in EV means vehicle already so... ;-)

Yep, exactly. If I want a good police station, I’ll get the latest one from City, but you really only need one - Friends has so much more variety
Ironic how the lego city police stations get worse with every new one
Police state-yes! Best comment. And Friends does interiors better too.
Friends has always objectively been better. Just now they are making less pink and purple sets so more appealing to other audiences, so the same builds, but a different colour scheme
I was always mad the made multiple police and fire stations but only 1 version of a hospital

I think between these 2 sets the lego friends is better., but like you said it is way overprice im waiting for it to go on sale. with taxes this comes out to 100 where i live
2:40
i defined agree theyre overpriced. for 80-90 dollars you couldve gotten that big lego friends treehouse they made for their 10th anniversary. if i could control the price id make both of them like 40-50 bucks at most
Nah the friends one isn’t worth 50$. 60$ make’s more sense
Pity about the doll type people as they do not really fit make one design for both
Lego city was outcompeted by Creator when talking of houses and now is Friends doing with City's life style?
WTF YOUR INTIRE HOUSE IS COVERED IN LEGO!
The friends one should have left out the truck and made it a 70 dollar set.
"Especially like Denmark or other Danish countries."
I'm going to pretend that you didn't just say that!
What you're saying is... Lego city is the inner city with more crime and Friends is the suburbs.
I got it for 30 in Scotland
nah if someone breaks into ur house that whole collection is screwed
Omg you cant see the wall paper lol
i think walmart has the best grocery store (/j)
Oh yeah! automatic doors FTW
There's another 1:1 comparison to be made: City 60386 Recycling Truck vs Friends 41712 Recycling Truck. That City set is another incredibly over-priced set...
You know City is bad at holding up its name when you'd rather buy a Friends set.
is that salmon bricks?
Friends has been better than City for quite some time. I wish they would switch to minifigs - it would send City packing.
The Friends sets are awesome but I really don't like minidolls 🤔 They remind me of Playmobil 😮
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
If anything, it shows that they are showing a greater level of care for girl's sensibilities when developing sets than with a boy's. Boys just want to be badass firemen 😝
The lego friends grocery store puts the city one to shame
