I believe he’s playing the rootless versions of most of the chords being played, which in the case of Gm9, he’s only playing the 3rd, 5th, b7th, and 9th of the chord (Bb, D, F, A). Hope that helps man!
You know the motion you use to apply vibrato? It's almost like that, except you're using your index to barre (fret) two strings at once. Keep your finger very loose -- the movement comes from the hand, not the finger. Once you have that motion down it's easier, still tricky though! Other than that practice it slow, like 75% playback or even slower. Good luck!

Why is the chord for the first bar a Gm9 instead of a BbMaj7? Is the G implicit somehow? The only notes being played are Bb-D-F-A
