not even deutero.canonical - the 7 books of that deutero-classification were recognized as canonical by the majority of Jews before others books of the narrow collection were recognized as canonical by the pharisses and their rabbis - for instance, the Pharisees and their rabbis only recognized Daniel around the 4th century AD

@@silveriorebelo2920agreed. It's really messy. The Sadducees probably only recognized the Torah, beta. Israel has an entire different Canon including some of the deuterocanonical books and the Samaritans have a slightly different Torah but don't recognize any of the other books. I think it's best to say that the current Protestant Old testament based on the Jewish Tanakh can best be described as the Canaan of scripture arrived at after the bar kokhba revolt. Even the Talmud has passages discussing the status of Esther as well as Sirach.

The difference between the RSV and the RSC2CE eliminates the "thee"s and "thou"s that were in the RSV. Certain passages have been revised to reflect more accurate theological interpretations. The original 1966 RSV Catholic Edition didn't make any changes to the Old Testament. The Second Catholic Edition, by contrast, did make changes: it eliminated the remaining instances of Jacobean English and adjusted a few theologically suspect passages (most notably, Isaiah 7.14, which now reads "virgin"). Basically, it's like a middle ground between the original RSV and the ESV.
    Judges 6.16-18 RSV:
And the Lord said to him, “But I will be with you, and you shall smite the Midianites as one man.” And he said to him, “If now I have found favor with thee, then show me a sign that it is thou who speakest with me. Do not depart from here, I pray thee, until I come to thee, and bring out my present, and set it before thee.” And he said, “I will stay till you return.”
    Judges 6.16-18 RSV2CE:
And the Lord said to him, “But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.” And he said to him, “If now I have found favor with you, then show me a sign that it is you who speak with me. Do not depart from here, I beg you, until I come to you, and bring out my present, and set it before you.” And he said, “I will stay till you return.”
    Judges 6.16-18 ESV:
And the Lord said to him, “But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.” And he said to him, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, then show me a sign that it is you who speak with me. Please do not depart from here until I come to you and bring out my present and set it before you.” And he said, “I will stay till you return.”
    Judges 6.16-18 NRSV:
The Lord said to him, “But I will be with you, and you shall strike down the Midianites, every one of them.” Then he said to him, “If now I have found favor with you, then show me a sign that it is you who speak with me. Do not depart from here until I come to you, and bring out my present, and set it before you.” And he said, “I will stay until you return.”

Just got my Ignatius and am liking it so far. A quick note: The main difference between the RSV2CE and the RSVCE is that the 2CE removed archaic words and updated some word choices to reflect changes in usage, like changing "booty" to "plunder" and "ass" to "donkey." I love the RSV2CE. I think it's the best Catholic translation out there. Looking forward to your full review.

    • @zatoichi1
      @zatoichi1 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

Yes, the archaic English is more precise with "thee" and "thou". How is it that English ended up eliminating distinction between singular and plural forms of the second person? This still causes problems to this very day with different speakers using words like "y'all", "you guys" and "all of you" to distinguish the plural second person. I understand that languages evolve but losing such form and function is seriously a de-evolution.

I ordered this one and have the earlier Entire NT.
There is a problem with this study bible. There are so many notes that you are constantly skipping back and forth.
I suggest reading one to both pages, then going back and reading the notes for what you just read.
4:00 shows that there is half to more notes than scripture, which is a good thing but can easily confuse jumping back and forth.
They also have maps where useful, not just at the back and small essays on topic where it appears in the Bible.
7:19 I believe that information is inside this Bible. In the very front somewhere.
I believe there is much more in the back than what was mentioned.
Forgot to add the notes are not in microman size. where you can just make out the text but need a microscope for the notes. it is the same size.
Some Bibles have their notes so small they are unreadable

I still personally prefer the NKJV but I think it's better than the original RSV or NRSV imo.

It's still on pre-order, so I'm hoping for a Christmas miracle so I can make it my 2025 Bible. I'll be eager to see what notes they have for Genesis 3:15, which the traditional Douay-Rheims translates as "she shall crush thy head" and which the RSVCE bowdlerized to "he shall bruise your head." A huge difference! This is a linchpin verse in Mariology. PS: Just picked up Fr. James Mawdsley's book "Crushing Satan's Head" drawing on this potent passage.

There are notes that put me off getting the Didache as even just wanting to know something about what the Catholics believe, I don't want notes that cast doubt about the Bible itself and believe there a few of that type in the Didache.
From what I have heard, I will like the translation of the RSV2CE

No such notes on the Didache bible. The Didache bible has notes connecting scripture to Catholic doctrine found in the Catechism.
The Bible with the horrendous notes that virtually all Catholics cringe at is the NABRE. Nothing wrong with the translation itself, but the notes border and sometimes ride on the skeptic line.
The New Catholic Bible is a better translation than the NABRE and with more theologically orthodox notes.

I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

@TheFreshestPrince jesus didn't start the institution u call the catholic church.
The church is the body of the believers.
That is seriously the only arguments u have.
Why is it with these discussions u
Never apeal to the scriptures other than your rock verse.
And a few other out of context ones.
It's always this church father or that church father or well the catechism says such and such.
Can u for once actually look at in good faith of the argument see that the bible disagrees with
      Xyor z tradition.
Haven't u noticed that protestants are consistent when looking at the latristics and saying they r not infallible.
There little better than reading c.s. lewis. That's all they r. Men with opinions
      He didn't
Vhrist says repeatedly that man's traditions choke the word.
But u say that becuase of one verse saying christ did more things not written down we toss the near 100 instances saying not to add.
Can't u just meat the argument
U would win more protestants if u argue from scripture within context

@@r.a.panimefan2109 we can’t win more converts by using scripture alone because (drum roll please) we don’t believe in scripture alone!
It’s true! And not only do Catholics not follow the Bible alone, but no where in the Bible itself does it say to follow the Bible alone. In fact nowhere in the Bible itself does it tell us how many books are even supposed to be in it!
Wouldn’t Jesus have told us that if we were meant to follow the Bible only? Actually, how *can* we follow the Bible alone when the Bible doesn’t even tell us what it is? How do you know what books should and should not be in the Bible when the Bible doesn’t tell you?
It’s almost like, dare I say it? Jesus didn’t leave us a Bible, because He left us a *Church* . And then, after many years the *Church* decided what books belonged in the Bible! That’s what actually happened! After all Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would be with His *Church* and He prayed for all members of His church to be One! And the Catholic Church is still one, even all these thousands of years later!
The Protestants and Orthodox slowly split into more and more schism, while we Catholics have remained one! I encourage all my Protestant brothers and sisters to read church history and realize that “the Bible alone” does not work. Best of luck friend, I’m praying for you ✝️🙏🏻
