I think this timing is pretty perfect for him. If the Jets lose their next 3 games he can just go back on IR and keep rehabbing for next season. If they manage to win 2 of them they can evaluate based on where he’s at and their road to a wild card game. I don’t think he’ll end up coming back, but mainly because I don’t think he’ll risk playing in games that ultimately don’t mean anything.

I ruptured my left Achilles one week prior to Aaron. I chose to go the nonsurgical route for recovery. This week I was able to ruckmarch for a fairly long flat distance without much difficulty. However, like the good Doc said, that eccentric load bearing is still absent. I cannot jump yet and to be able to run again will take another few months of persistent physical therapy. In addition the muscular dystrophy is absolutely legit. So even if Aaron can move laterally and throw the ball, as can I, I am worried for him because there is no way he is at the athletic level of a healthy football player yet.

Thank you Dr. Sutterer for providing the holistic and mindful perspective on what the Speed Bridge Achilles repair entails and how Rodgers' recovery and function may look like in the coming weeks. It's refreshing to hear this sort of opinion when there's so much hyperbole put out there by the national sports media. It's still great to learn that such advances have occurred in orthopedics and sports medicine, and I wonder if these options were discussed with other athletes who suffered an Achilles tendon rupture such as KD. Also, I wonder if the procedure will gain popularity among future injured players or if drawbacks exist that will make people stick to the more traditional repair method.

Not only is this causing a buzz in the football world and circle of sports injuries followers but this has expanded outside of football into the general population and has their attention. I don’t know if Aaron ever wanted to be the one who was at the center of it but now that he is he has been more than transparent and forthcoming about many of the details. I’ve not seen such granular remarks and commentary. And the fact of who he is that has elevated this whole thing. Him returning is part of it(that’ll be sweet) but he already has moved the needle. Gary Payton II (Young Glove) suffered a lower leg injury during last night's game.
Today, it was let known that he is suffering a torn calf muscle. Sounds like a self defining injury; but, im interested in your explanation of the injury, the anotomy of that leg area, what is the rehab process and generally, how long will a full recovery take. Thank you in advance.😊

Totally amazing if he comes back at any point this year. Not a fan of his anymore but happy for him. He is great at moving and sliding inside the pocket. If he can avoid the big hits and throw the way he used to, the Jets could possibly make the playoffs. It won’t be easy, he will be a step slower and easier to catch. Not sure it is real smart to risk injuring it again this early but I understand he is not getting any younger and he only has a few more rolls of the dice to get another ring. This year he needs a real lucky roll if he can make it back. If anyone can do it, Aaron Rodgers would be that guy.

No Doctor Brian you were not wrong A Rod just REALLY wants to play again asap so he’s pushing this way beyond the normal levels of safety. If someone is ok driving in a car with only partially working brakes that doesn’t mean all cars should be that way. A person who is willing to eat expired food consistently doesn’t mean that should be the norm. There are people out there who are ok with heightened degrees of risk. Whether that be because of thrill seeking behavior or a constant desire to seem tougher or more impressive there’s not a lot we can do except warn of what could happen.
It’s the same thing as someone leaving a hospital AMA. if the person understands the potential consequences and is of sound mind they can do whatever the like as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else.

In my senior year of high school football, I tore my acl and my meniscus via noncontact hyper extension on a grass field. I then had surgery 3 weeks later in late September and then my rehab had only taken me to late February. So my return to play was just under 5 and a half months. I had a quad tendon graft and 3 other teammates had the same injury and surgery, I was the only one to not reinjure my leg or damage my ligament again and that's been the case for the past 7 years. I had a lightning quick return to play compared to all other athletes in my area that had that same injury. I was a 3 sport athlete and came back to play basketball at the end of the season and I competed in track as a hurdler, long distance sprinter, and a discus thrower. I managed to get back to where I was a year prior and hit some PR's. SO it is definitely possible to be on top of your rehab and get back into shape to play, but its tough.

Between having 24x7 constant care and treatment versus the average person seeing a doctor or therapist once or twice during the entire healing cycle, he is also just being the typical tough guy NFL player wanting to get back out there fast - Plus as you said it isn't his plant side and as long as he doesn't run around and stays a statue in the pocket, he might be able to help them in the playoffs. But he is going to have to do a ton of extra work in the off season to get it fully healed if he doesn't end up popping it off again getting tackled while running. But mainly I think he is rolling the dice since it is so close to retirement age.

There's still the tendon tissue that needs to regrow at the point of the rupture.... not sure how that can speed up. Yes the bridge provides artificial connection and anchor of tendon to bone.... but the tendon tissue still needs to heal and repair itself. Not sure how that process can be sped up. Wonder if there is some growth substance applied to the point of rupture during the surgery to expedite the regrowth.... perhaps stem cells? Rodgers may be able to throw as its not his anchor foot to push off his body weight when throwing. The issue particularly with the current state of the Jets O line is Rodgers mobility... his ability to suddenly push off that foot to scramble out of the pocket and avoid a sack. I think it best he just lets the wound heal fully until next years training camp.

@@marathonmatt9813 you could be right. He could have had stem cells or peptide injections but not sure if he’ll be transparent around that. They would also have to be approved therapies by the NFLPA drug testing policy.
As an aside there are many studies that simple collagen supplementation (upwards of 15g/day) provides statistical improvement in tendon repair. I read 3 different studies that early weight bearing also speeds up healing time. The biggest hurdle is muscle atrophy, if he was weight bearing early instead of NWB for 12weeks the amount of muscle atrophy will be greatly reduced. Because it’s never been done before doesn’t mean that it’s impossible.
It’d be great to have more longitudinal studies on this procedure but it also it’s not without its drawbacks. For what’s it worth my surgeon was concerned for potential chronic tendinopathy due to the anchor points into the calcaneus bone. I’m essence putting more pressure on the bone insertion point than the tendon
