Great points! I went back DVDs because I got tired of streaming Services. The high prices, the ads… i now have over 1 thousand movies and tv shows. I don’t see my self going back to streaming.

I still watch movies on DVDs, I go to the library twice every week looking for new movies. Everyone finds it weird but in my opinion DVDs add more to watching a movie, if you just watch it on Netflix you could easily skip scenes, watch any movie you want, and way much more, but there is something so special about watching it in dvd

I love all your reasons for DVD's. I've never streamed or subscribed to a digital channel. I've stayed with my daughter and it DOES take 20+ minutes to find something to watch on Netflix. I buy from CEX or charity shops. I own them and if I ever choose to, I can resell them.

As a non-native english speaker, there´s the added value of the Dubs. Altough these days I watch everything in the original audio, the childhood memmories of watching Simpsons in Czech are priceless. Also my parents are older and never watch anything with subtitles, and Slovak or Czech dubs are often missing on streaming services while you can still find them even on 4K BluRays. Oh and the bonus features and bloopers are always great. Playing small minigames that were on Disney DVD was just awesome.

I buy almost exclusively DVDs and I'll keep doing so until I can get something similar in a DRM-free format with extras. I rip them to disc and convert them for use on my NAS streaming it to my Roku via Jellyfin. It's a very similar experience to one of the big streaming services, just a lot less expensive and a lot less annoying. It is a bit of work, but once you've got a disc converted, that's a one and done. Just store whatever queue you're using to process it and it's a lot easier if you need to do it again. Most of the reconversion time is just the computer chugging away without me if I need it to.

@@Wishfull._..Editor57 Well..I understand (and respect) what you're saying, but that's probably not the best reason to collect DVDs or another physical format tbh. Most collectors collect because of the need to own specific movies they always have access to. They collect because of the collecting itself, you see. Not because of financial reasons. And also, not everything is available on physical format nowadays. Some films and series are only available on streaming services. And that amount is growing.

I'm getting really sick of having to Google "where to watch [movie]" and seeing that it's only streaming on one of the 20 streaming services that I'm not subscribed to lol
and honestly for me the biggest appeal of DVDs is just getting to see them stand on the shelf, as weird as that sounds haha

Last year I made my first imported home video purchases: Seinfeld Seasons 1 and 2 (found it in a British Heart Foundation for £2 without realising it was an American DVD until I got home lol), Dastardly and Muttley in their Flying Machines, Toei’s The Little Mermaid on Blu-Ray which is a lot darker than Disney’s adaptation and more faithful to the original story and Oshi No Ko Season 1 the latter 3 imported from Amazon US

Digital Video Discs, much like Videocassettes, when not in high demand, are so cheap, you can easily keep them forever, and retain the 4:3 aspect ratio that many re-releases in the mid to late 2000s and 2010s struggle to do to this very day. Also, the 480p on the DVDs still look nice and sharp as it was on the CRT TVs in the late 1990s to mid 2000s, even using a CD/DVD External drive for me when I need to record video or audio, or simply play them on my computer instead of my PS2 or DVD/VHS combo player hooked up to the back of a CRT/Digital TV with A/V and Component outputs/S-Video outputs built in (not instead it's all HDMI and I do miss the analog inputs from the early 2010s and before, and most of the new ones are kind of garbage if you ask me and don't quite give good resolution compared to a Retrotink for video games compared to movies if you ask me).

Besides price on the used market and things you can’t get on Blu Ray I’ve gotten Blu Rays for the same price as what Dollar General was trying to sell Venom 2 Let there be Carnage on DVD when No Way Home was out.
I got a UHD and BR steelbook for the same 20 bucks.
I’ve also been able to thrift a lot of Blu Rays. As far as compatibility with affordable portable options you might have us there other than the digital copies.

When i find something i already have i buy the blu ray and sell the dvd. Spend aloth of money on blu ray and dvd now but in the future the cost will be low. I used netflix an other streaming for more then 10 years at €25 month thats €3000 wasted. Here you find dvd from 0.50 to €2 and most of my blu ray i payed like €3..

Here is why physical media is better: Blu rays are better then dvd in quality, but both don't have the problems of streaming. but I will still take that over streaming. Also , Amazon, HBO , Disney plus , Netflix , only hold a Licence to a certain film or tv show for so long.
for example: I brought a film on Amazon prime It was Matrix, (so it was on my amazon account) but as soon as Amazon has the rights to that film, it was also deleted from my account.
Why Physical media is better :
1: The Quality format is better ( Blu rays and Blu ray4k are good example of this) The Quality stays the same, you don't have to worry about internet connection playing up (aka buffering)
2: You own the Blu ray/ dvd, unlike streaming.
3: The Special features and audio commentary that come with physical media are amazing and more of them!
4: You don't need to pay for multiple streaming services

I watch VHS, DVD and Blu-ray. It's cheaper and I can watch the unaltered versions of movies and movies not available on a streaming platform. There is absolutely NO WAY that everyone will go streaming or digital only.
You also said that you can watch anything you want on streaming. Most streaming platforms have only a minority of the films ever made. Try watching older films, and that's where these digital platforms fail.
The rising streaming prices, always paying for subscriptions, means that in the long term, it's cheaper to buy all the films I want to rewatch and be free of paying forever.

Whilst DVD's are cool and VERY cheap, the majority of them (unless it's a British TV show) are converted from 24fps into 25fps because of PAL/NTSC format differences so there is a noticeable speed up of the ENTIRE piece of media. What I'm doing now is buying Blu-Rays which completely counteracts that issue, and they're also relatively cheap to pick up new or used from CEX or charity shops!

Call me optimistic. But physical media wont die for movies. As long as the people who grew up on it still exist it can be like vinyl. Also internet isnt good for everywhere and collectors exist as well. But eventually yeah it will die, dvds probably coming first since lets be honest collectors dont target them anymore and are like half of the current physical media market, but it will do since you kind of had to be there in the 2000s and early 2010s. But i see physical media lasting until the 2050s or 2060s at least, very optimistic sure but because some people will want dvd ownership until they become old and retire. Also gud video people like you slow the decline of dvds even marginally

  • @_keygen

arent DVDs only 480p though? thats a big let down abt them for me
I like burning movies to dvd-r/rw s and using them as kinda like usb sticks because then u can burn stuff thats 1080p or higher onto them and watch them that way. ofc u cant play them in dvd recorders n such but i mostly watch movies on my pc anyway so its fine.
It is ofc piracy though but I mean it isint really that bad since atleast if i did buy dvds they'd be mostly secondhand ones and with secondhand stuff you aren't even directly supporting the original artists anyway
Ofc having the original copy would be way nicer but blurays are quiiteee expensive at times and some movies barely have any physical copies in the first place

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade
      @SmallSpoonBrigade 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes, my copy of The Matrix is 720x480p, which is more than enough for me. Some people are going to want the extra size that comes with a Bluray or 4k disc, and that's OK, but a lot of TV and movies really don't have more than 480p worth or resolution in the original copy anyways. Much of the TV from the '80s and '90s was taped on tape rather than film, and that has a limited ability to be blown up.
Depending upon what you're watching, it can make more sense to just up convert it yourself, especially for more recent animation that's likely to take better to AI up-scaling than more detailed TV or movies would.
That being said, the color gamut and sound improvements of Bluray are much better reasons to go with Bluray rather than DVD. Personally, I use DVDs mainly because I rip all of it to disc to stream to my TV. It's a Netflix like experience, with a lot fewer headaches in terms of finding stuff. If all else fails, I can have it show me the stuff in a random order and just pick the one of those options at random.

Netflix is sucks you don't own you just renting them after that they dissappear. While dvd is cheap nowadays you can just buy them .

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade
      @SmallSpoonBrigade 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

The renting aspect is fine with me, or it was back when it was cheap. But for the $16 or $23 a month that they charge for adfree viewing, you can buy a lot of DVDs or blurays with that. And, they're yours permanently. That's $200 to $280 a year roughly for Netflix and that can buy a large amount of media to watch. It's also not compulsory to spend the money every month. If you're like me and are way backed up in terms of watching what you've got, you can just not buy any for a few months.
The other major issues is as he said in the video. The sites are designed to keep you stuck longer than you need to be just so you don't run through their catalog too quickly. My Jellyfin install doesn't do that. It helps me find what I want to watch, refers me to similar stuff I have, tells me what time it will be when I'm done watching and has randomization features if for some reason I'm being indecisive. I can just watch one of the first few options that it gives me and since I've curated the library I'm watching, there's nothing outright bad on there, and very little that isn't great.
