[7V][4k] Transfer to Heaven? CSX Trains Around Athens, GA 03/25-29/2020

  • Q582-25 was a surprisingly short train but he had special things to tow: Five SD60s were transferred from Norfolk Southern to leasing company PRLX. What's their fate? The torches of scrap yards, storage, or indeed a short line that leases one or another? Only future can tell... While Q582 gets ready to leave Harper Siding near Winder, GA after grain train G179-23 went by, we watch a Sikorsky SH-60 Black Hawk helicopter on its landing approach at Winder Airport. Part of the video is dedicated to the Athens local train A752-29. Going north from Athens to serve the Biomass Power Plant in Colbert, GA he must handle the south-facing industry spur of the plant. To do so, he has to go to the following siding, Howie Siding near Comer, and run around his train, then go south and get the work done. We catch him at Howie, where he has to wait for empty grain train V346-28 (with a rebuilt SD70MACe leading!) and manifest Q580-29 to pass. We then follow him south and watch his actions at the plant in Colbert. Perfectly old-style looking with his three GP engines and a caboose on the rear, he eventually returns to Athens, GA. Enjoy!

    In case anyone was wondering...
    NS #6799 is a former Conrail SD60M.
    NS #6797 is a former Conrail SD60M.
    NS #6732 is a former Conrail SD60I. Note the unusual number board font.
    NS #6814 is a former BNSF SD60M "triclops" with the somewhat unusual three piece front windshield. Also of note is the unusual number board font.
    NS #6786 is a former Conrail SD60M.

    Some heavenly transfer. I got up early to see Q582 to then wait 5 hours and find no SD60Ms. Great catch but I’m jealous only you got to see them!

    Great Video. 2 or 3 years ago, Engine 5225 on Q580 was a temporary switch engine in CSX Goulding Yard in Pensacola Florida, the one they had was taken away and they used 5225 for a while until a smaller engine was brought in. It was before CSX sold it's track.

    I hope someone gets more use out of those SD60's. I really like the sound of the engines just rumbling along - no strain and they sneak a caboose in to give us a smile!

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know, but unless a short line can make use of them or an unlikely surge of traffic requires pulling them out of storage, I don't see how they will ever be revived.

  • @allohiorailfan6123

    If the locomotives have "Do not fill" or "do not fuel" spray painted on the fuel tank, more than defiantly those SD60M's and SD60I's are going to the scrapyard

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually already asked myself this question, but PRLX probably just puts them in storage first for some time.

      You have a good point.
      on a large group of SD60's that were chosen to be scrapped had their dynamic brake hatches removed and left the hole where that equipment once was.
      Here's a good example of that

    Interesting find for those ex-NS SD60 locomotives! I think those CSX SD70MACe rebuilds are becoming more common. That one you caught has a nice Raised Letter K5LA Horn! Q&A: Here are the locomotives of the Ohio, Pennsylvania and Chicago Railroad:
    1. GE ES44AC
    2. EMD SD70ACe
    3. EMD SD40-2
    4. GE ET44AC

    11. EMD SD70
    12. GE C40-9
    13. GE C40-8M (ex BCOL)
    14. GE C40-8W (ex-CSX, GECX)
    15. GE C41-8W (ex-UP, GECX)
    16. EMD SD70M (ex-CSX, PRLX)
    17. GE AC44CW (ex-CSX)
    18. GE AC60CW (ex-CSX, PRLX)
    19. MP15E (ex-NS)
    20. GE P42DC (ex-Amtrak)
    21. GE B40-8 (ex-BNSF)
    22. EMD SD70AC (ex-CSX)
    23. GE C44-8W (ex-ATSF, ex-BNSF, upgraded to 4400 horsepower despite having 4000 horsepower as BNSF units)
    24. RCP4 (ex-NS Remote Control Platform units)
    25. EMD SD70ACe-T4
    26. EMD SD70M-2 (ex-NS)
    27. EMD SD40-2W (ex-CN)
    28. GE AC80CW (newest AC GE locomotives with 8000 horsepower)
    29. MT6 Slug (ex-CSX, ex-Conrail ALCO RSD12)
    30. EMD SD40M-2 (ex-CEFX)
    and 31. EMD F40PH-2C (ex-Coaster)
    These are all the 31 diesel locomotives that will be built for the Ohio, Pennsylvania and Chicago Railroad (OP&CR) once this mainline freight railroad comes out. So Q&A: is there some other locomotives that will be built for other Class 1 freight railroads that release in 2021?

    I have noticed when one train passes another that is stopped to wait for it, the passing train gives a series of short horn blasts. Is that “required” or just them saying hello?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I don't think it's required, but it's a warning signal to the crew of the train waiting, but they also do it to greet each other.

    Make me sad seeing those SD60s gone and the conditions they are in after growing up all my life on an NS line

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know, but the SD60 is simply an outdated model. And since NS has stopped the SD60E rebuilding program in favor of AC road engines (which makes perfect sense to me), there's no actual use for them anymore - sadly.

    Q&A: Here are 9 Class One freight railroads you think might come to existence in 2021:
    1. Ohio, Pennsylvania and Chicago Railroad (OP&C)
    2. Kentucky Northern (KN)
    3. Midwest Railway (MWRY)
    4. Toronto and Virginia Railroad (T&V)
    5. New York, Moscow and Southern Railroad (NYMSR)

    7. Los Angeles and Scranton Southern Railroad (LASS)
    8. Norfolk, Manhattan and Eastern Rail Services (NMER)
