I love all of Linda ronstadt's music. And as a Latina I am so proud of her pride and activism for the Latinos. But she definitely has an accent. I've watched many of her interviews and she doesn't speak Spanish she understands it.

si tiene acento, muy muy ligero, de repente cuando pronuncia la LL y a veces la R la dice un poco como RR, no siempre, en esta canción no se nota tanto porque es son frases rápidas y cortas, pero sí es casi perfecto

My wife is Mexican. We went to a Mariachi festival at the Hollywood Bowl. It was amazing. Those singers are top notch. I’m sure if Linda sang these songs when she was young that it helped her to develop her voice.
My wife also we to see Linda live when she toured for this album.
Everyone should experience a good mariachi band live.

I've watched her documentary she is not a Spanish speaker. She trained to learn the correct diction. There is footage of her working and recording this album and working with a vocal coach. In the exact same way she trained to sing operetta when she did Pirates of Penzance. She is Mexican American and she did grow up listening to this music. Her family was very musical and these were the songs her father sang.

Although she may not be a native speaker Linda grew up singing Mexican songs in the family home. Her two books are well worth reading, and will give you more about her musical career.
I’ve experienced the power of mariachi first hand, my wife’s parents lived at Santa Anita for a few years. Sister in law went to school there and even had a mariachi band at her pre wedding family get together in Edmonton.

She once said in an early interview, that she could only sing the music she grew up with in Tucson. She was exposed to Gilbert & Sullivan, Broadway show tunes, Opera, Country & Western, American Pop, Mariachi, Jazz and Classical. This created the foundation for each musical "detour" she made starting in the 80"s To that she added special training and coaching to prepare her for each genre. She is known as a perfectionist and so she worked hard. While a trained ear in The Big Band style of Jazz, Mariachi, or Gilbert & Sullivan can hear her slight imperfections; the rest of us hear the product of intensive training. She was born with a musical gift, was nurtured in the musical "hot house" that was her family home and the town of Tucson, was driven by determination and a search for musical perfection to achieve an inspiring life.

OMG, this is gold, a gem!!
I'm Mexican born, US raised, and American, I'm a Pocho
I came up in the 90's, so I heard Linda with Aaron Neville. They sang, "I Don't Know Much".
I was shocked to learn that she was of Mexican blood and to hear these Classics! She performed this at a Grammy's, in the 80's!
The accent is English, speaking (or singing), in Spanish. Selena also had this exact accent in Spanish.
It's completely natural, chicanos are not natural Spa. speakers.
I do believe I've heard Linda say that she did not speak Spa.

Hi guys. Glad to hear you listen to Ms. Ronstadt's first Mexican music album. I'm an American with Mexican grandparents (abuelos) on both sides. For whatever reason I did not grow up speaking Spanish, and so I always refer to myself as 'un pocho'. I think Linda would admit she's a 'pocha'. We both grew up hearing the language and the music. She worked REALLY hard to get this down. (and yes, the Luis Miguel 'mariachi' recording is also very good) ¡Muchisimas gracias!

You have to see the video of this life performance. The fact is, Linda Ronstadt did not speak Spanish. Her father was Mexican and her mother was German, so Spanish was not the main language spoken in their home she learned these songs and their meaning, and took lessons in Spanish so that our pronunciation would be absolutely perfect. This is from the biggest selling Spanish language album in history. No. Her father is not on the album.

  • @pjesf

Linda does not speak or understand Spanish, per sey. She sings phonetically. You are truly missing out by only listening to the recording. In the "Conciones de Mi Padre" concert, each song is staged so beautifully. (All of it was inspired by Linda's vision of a night under the Mexican stars) The whole concert is available on youtube. You can also view each song separately there. There were no notes in this album that stated Linda's dad sang on it. (On her album "Hasten Down the Wind" she sang a song her father wrote - "Lo Siento MI Vida" - and she gave him full credit. So if he had sung on this album, I'm sure she would've said so.) However, her brothers sing with her on one song, and her niece, Mindy, sings "Y Andale!" with her and is also in the concert. I was privileged to see this concert 3 times over around a 2 year period. I use to play the CD multiple times EVERY DAY for around 3 years! I was able to sing several songs phonetically because of it and was asked by 2 close friends, a Mexican-American couple, to sing with Mariachis at their wedding reception. Scared to death, but did it. One of my most treasured memories.
Regarding the topics Mariachis sing about....Mariachi, in essence, is Mexican "Country Music", is it not? 😊
Lastly, I want to make it clear....some people think Linda only talked about her Mexican ancestry when she got older. Not true! Linda ALWAYS talked about her Mexican heritage. There are filmed interviews of her talking about it & her love for Mexican music throughout her career.
Mucha Gracias, Linda! You were a truly GREAT story teller. You make us "FEEL" each song with your unmatched voice and tender heart. You are a gift to us ALL.

Linda learnt to sing in Spanish as it was part of her heritage but obviously English was what she learnt to speak in everyday life. Conversational Spanish is what she would have trouble understanding but thumbs up for her even trying this, she is an amazing artist.

To my knowledge Linda's father, Gilbert, did not perform on this album. However, on her 1976 album HASTEN DOWN THE WIND, he co-wrote, along with Kenny Edwards and Linda, a song titled LO SIENTO MI VIDA. It's mostly in Spanish and is quite beautiful. Believe he may have provided some harmonies. Another song from the same album is TRY ME AGAIN. Linda wrote, or co-wrote it and it's one of my favorites. I wish she had continued to write. She had a talent for it. ✌

I'm getting more from listening to you're Spanish reactions, plus I love the music! Mariachi makes me want to party....where's the Tequila. Awwwwyayayayaya!!!

my Grandfather Conception Joseph Alferez played the Mandolin in a Mariachi band and then he developed his own band where he played the Mandolin, when my mom passed away, she wanted me to put my pop pop's Mandolin in her casket so when she sees him in heaven, she could give it to him.

She learned to speak Spanish for the songs, but she did not speak Spanish at home. She is my number one favorite female singer of all time. Her voice is like no other. I'm so sad that she can't sing anymore, but she is just a gift to every ear in the world

Please review and respond to the many wonderful voices of Linda Ronstadt and in particular with her Big Band genre recording of "Whats New, " which was her 1983 project with the late vintage orchestra arranger, Nelson Riddle from the Swing Jazz and lovelorn ballads Era of the 1950's. Listeners should enjoy Linda's skillful, authentic, and beautiful interpretation of this great American classic with her big rich, muscular voice.

Try this on for size: Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville singing "Goodbye My Friend". Linda grew up in Tucson and of course was very effective by both Mexican and American music. She started out singing country and what became country rock and then spread out from there. Although her father is Mexican American and her mother is German American c
And she learned to sing her father's favorites songs in Spanish but never learned to speak the language conversationally. I imagine she probably can hold her own now, but then again speaking is very difficult due to her illness.

Linda is like so very many people from Texas to California (and beyond) - of both Anglo and Mexican heritage. I'm not, but I have seven or eight cousins who are (I've lost track - lol). That's what's so awesome about the border states. When she was healthy she literally could sing anything. Country, Rock, Traditional Mexican, Pop Standards - she's amazing. Breaks my heart what has happened to her health in her older years.

Though Linda was brought up in Tucson AZ and is in part of Mexican heritage she did not learn Spansh growing up. She once indicated that her mexican relatives would speak in rapid spansih to hid from her what they they were saying.. Her father sang Mariachi and she was exposed to it from brith. After a succesful pop carrer she suddenly announced she wanted to record Mariachi and the record company FREAKED...

Linda’s Mexican and German too but she was raised in Arizona in a Mexican environment with the Mexican side of her family. She speaks about it growing up to Mexican music Mexican food smelling tortillas. This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.
