For real. One complaint I have about the _"EDM"_ scene is that everything feels so commercial and fake. No one has a personality, no one says their opinions without walking on eggshells, and no one dares criticise _"EDM"_ despite it being kind of a joke sometimes.
i love deadmau5 interviews, really clever guy.. big fan he inspired a generation of producers including myself and hes never afraid to speak up about shitty edm very admirable, and i like the interviewer hes done a deadmau5 interview with him before it was great he really gets into the mind of joel
Yeah, Joel is totally right about the Depeche Mode bit though. Promoters know they can take advantage of Electronic acts & milk the shit out of it.....promote flashy lights, furry boots, & 20 artists that all sound the same & turn it all into an "Experience" As long as the money flows in, they could care less about what goes down.
He's a genius. I just saw a video on YT about a dude who got 2,000,00 streams from Spotify and only made $8,000 and got a measly 365 downloads from Apple Music as well. The music game online is not artist-centric. It's exploitative and Deadmau5 is smart to do what he does like that.
This is why I admire you, Joel. You're real and down to earth and you know when and where to draw the line. Keep bringing YOUR talent to the table. Thank you for what you do!
man you got to love how Joel is always right about the music industry...honestly as a noob producer i feel bad for all the people that cant just perform and do what they really wanted to always do fluently, the thing is that you are making music and products for people so you will have to get people envolved in that even if it affects your work its just how bussines work...its like cola, not evryone will or can drink it you will always have people that will prefer not or cant drink it for diferent reasons, this makes me conclude that as an idividual you must make your crafts as valuable as you can before it goes for the people, mainly because of the diferent ways they will be able to pick that up, you know what i mean? ;)
This interview was absolutely amazing and well thought out. Hell of a lot better than the traditional interview questions. Was also extremely funny, and I loved it. PLEASE DO MORE!!
So stoked! LOVE DEPECHE MODE been a fan since the 90s. They were indeed the starters of Electronic Music and one of the biggest influence on Electronic Music as we know it today. So happy to see Joel agrees to that also! Awesome!
Electronic music will never die! I remember in the mid 90's everybody was like "techno music will die pretty fast" and look where it is now! Too much great song have been created and will not be forgotten.
Very interesting conversation / interview. I feel I learned a lot just by listening. Thank you for sharing. I would like to meet you in person one day. Take care and keep goin' man.
And wow, a 6TB (or however much it is) project file? That's absolutely crazy. I couldn't imagine how long it took to export the songs and mixes or whatever, hahaha. I know the actual chances of this happening is slim to none, but I hope, after the album is dropped, that Joel shows us producers exactly * how * it all was done. I do think he sorta mentioned it in the interview though, which is exciting. :)
***** follow his Instagram feed so you can see how big and expensive his systems are. He actually owns a server that can render not just 4k, but 6K videos (Well that's what he said in his pictures of equipment). His laptops alone costs more than $4,000 already (15" Macbook Pro and 14" Razer Blade). With all that said, I'm pretty sure that something like a 6-core i7 is probably still small for what he's doing. I'm pretty sure that he's rocking something like a 12 core Intel Xeon processor. I've seen one of his systems on Instagram though, it uses one of Nvidia's professional grade cards (Like Kepler? Or Quadro?), paired with a RED Rocket X card.
I'm not even a mau5 fan, but this guy is wise. His business point of view is very bright. If he succeeded that much, it's not for nothing. oh and WORST INTERVIEWER by the way, Joel looked fed up....
I don't subscribe to his website because I'm in a different time zone, but I always follow this guy and look up to him. I don't understand why people hate him, I've heard some stuff like 'oh he's big headed'. I've never seen this man be shallow or horrid to his fans. He's always cared and he does his stuff for us. Keep doing the amazing shit Joel, you're totally respected in the uk :D
36:00 - hence the V3 tour. FAN.TASTIC. 100% success rate, artist driven, supporting acts / guests chosen by the main guy, experience a concert different from the many I've been to / hosted in my 47 years.
Now, 25:46... this is why I prefer the mau5 on tumblr! :D I can see his concept despite how callous he may ever come off, b.c his intentions are actually crystal clear, but he said it himself, that's he's misunderstood. That sux! It shouldn't be so complicated when he rather simply explains pt. on, not going in any circles or 'beating around the bush'- he's just TO THE PT.! :p Overall: this is by far the VERY best interview I'm stumbled across- even as a WHOLE (on any celebs). The interviewer gets to the pt., & Joel elaborates on extreme depth!! And Depeche Mode... doesn't get any better! I've also always been into New Wave 1980s for YRS. (when I did listen to them on & off, but was still considered a fav. genre) & still am to this day, despite I only know but a few artists... time for me to learn more about them! Duran Duran, TEARS FOR FEARS (OMG, don't even get me started on them!
Honestly, I love deadmau5's piano stuff. Songs like Bleed and Drop the Poptart are very moving. Deadmau5's music means something that other artists can't do.
Glad you posted this. It's really good. The talk about the new album makes me excited. (And as a 30-something electronica fan, a lot of this mass-produced bullshit makes me sad.)

I think Joel is really insightful. I think its a matter of his uniqueness and his no bullshit attitude that puts people off. I like the style. He's got the punk artist vibe
I'm not sure why people are sayin the guy interviewing is terrible, I really like to hear the whole business side of the scene, and how things work and how Joel prefer to deal with this kinda of things, thanks for putting this online Joel
everything deadmau5 says makes sense lol. he is truly one of the most smartest and the only that is truly awake of EDM´s current situation. like he said. he knows 3years ago that pop artist would start using different kinds of house tunes in their pop music..
Electronic music will NEVER get thrown off like Disco was in the '80s, kids now days are growing up with Electronic music not like in the '80s where they were growing up with Rock
50:45 its as if Joel gave an omen to Jian Ghomeshi's (interviewer) skeleton's in his closet that would get Jian fired from everything 5 months after this interview.
This is a perfect example of why I love Jay Gordon and Orgy, theyve been a huuugggeee behind the scenes drive for a lot of big artists in the 90s and 2000s.
joel carried this interview, even though he is scatterbrained. jain, kept cutting him off and asking oppositional questions that would put him in the defensive.. constantly to me, it looks like jain simply doesnt like deadmau5 and really didnt want tot do this interview.
I understand you, you are awake. Do not let the people that created this unnatural reality , not living in truth, get to your unique imagination. You are doing more than the world a favor with your way of life.
Joel is so wise and i do like his view on EDM, but people seriously we shouldn't care too much about the whole genre classification thing, i seriously don't care what type of Edm you make trap or big room house or minimal. its all about the music
I found this really interesting, thats the geek in me i guess. I'm starting up a small independent record label in the UK and i learn a lot from people like you, Joel
I don't know why, but Joel's conflict with that Coca-Cola bottle made me laugh hysterically. Especially at 1:44, *begins to pour into the cup, then stops* "no, this is fucking stupid. I'll just drink it from the bottle." LOL
great interview, as a listener, consumer, person i still enjoy the Electronic scene. The one thing i look for in any kind of music is the originality of that song. that one second of ear candy and non repetitiveness in that track. Those are the qualities i look in a song/track. Try to Listen to a Early Dub Track from artist like Skream.
ok at the part around 45:00 where the interviewer wants to prove deadmau5 is in fact an artist because he makes the sound and comes up with the groove.... right, but! a graphic designer who makes a logo or a poster or something like that, its totally an exclusive 'design' but we wouldnt call them an artist would we? because there's a thousand other posters out there.
Deadmau5 is a person that people love to hate. He's easily disliked because of how level-headed he is, but then loved for it too.
"You aren't streaming this, are you?"
"No."
*Posts it to TH-cam*
xD
That isn't streaming though.
Bruh
I love how Joel never really answers a question. It's an art form.
I love it when he talks. Such a brain on him. It's nice seeing an artist in control of their music and everything in between.
I love how in the beginning the interviewer is talking to him and he's just trying to figure out if he wants the coke in the glass or not
EDM honestly needs more transparent artists like deadmau5
Yes thank you finally someone who gets me!!!
For real. One complaint I have about the _"EDM"_ scene is that everything feels so commercial and fake. No one has a personality, no one says their opinions without walking on eggshells, and no one dares criticise _"EDM"_ despite it being kind of a joke sometimes.
I like his cattoo.
R.I.P. Meowingtons
I can tell he's feeling anxious with all those people. I'd probably be way worse haha
+Daniel K I know- poor babies! -___- He sure got thru it tho! :)
It does say in his biography that he has lots of anxiety

one of the few big name edm artists that has his head screwed on right
Or a personality in general.
Lol 1:45 "Fuck this glass"
ik, lol xD

Joel opens a Coke. And let the whole world is waiting.

i love joel because he is so sincere when he talks. Every people can see this even if they dont really "like" his music
"Who's going to Tomorrow Land, Who's playing? I don't fucking know IT'S TOMORROW LAND!!" lmao
Love everything about him.
Can I just say that "Avaritia" is one of the best mau5 songs i've heard in...forever?
*Acedia
just heard it. and its like pryda and his songs had sex, and that was the baby lol
Seeya was just released
"I remember, vocal mix" is the best!!
oh i think you forgot strobe.
Everything deadmau5 says is so true. I definitely understand where he is coming from with the whole EDM thing.
Dude really said "F. IT THIS WHOLE BOTTLE IS MINE!"
5 year tour. oh man. I'm looking forward to that.
i love that interviewer tht other interview he did with joel is my fav he asks good questions and they seem to really mesh
195th viewer! Thank you for the courage to speak to the masses, Joel.
Love listening to Joel and Jian! Great interview; I have so much respect for Joel's artistic integrity and transparency.
he's so good at getting the point across. love how open he is about this kind of stuff.
1:25 Joel fulfills his Coca-Cola addiction lol
Electronic music will never die! I remember in the mid 90's everybody was like "techno music will die pretty fast" and look where it is now! Too much great song have been created and will not be forgotten.

Take care and keep goin' man.
Joel hates him in the first 20 seconds for saying EDM.
deadmau5 just rejects the cup for the soda bottle
Another reason to love him. The fame doesn't seem to have gotten to him too much. He's still a pretty normal guy even after all the fame and fortune.
And wow, a 6TB (or however much it is) project file?
That's absolutely crazy. I couldn't imagine how long it took to export the songs and mixes or whatever, hahaha. CHRISTOPHER It Sounds Like is my one of my favorites. Especially Complications and Secondary Complications.
***** i really enjoy bot
CHRISTOPHER That entire album is awesome. All of the albums are truly unique. I can't wait for the new one!
I'm not even a mau5 fan, but this guy is wise. His business point of view is very bright. If he succeeded that much, it's not for nothing. oh and WORST INTERVIEWER by the way, Joel looked fed up....
It's just all the coffee and coca cola every single day.
kudjo24 This is actually a bit more loud and forward than the way Jian is on Studio Q, I think. Probably because he knows Joel.
I like Jian Gomeshi... I don't think I've ever heard him say anything stupid
Deadmau5 specifically requested that Jian interviewed him.
If he didn't like the interviewer, he wouldn't post this on his channel. But I guess he didn't look that fed up...
Loved the interview Joel. So good :)
I love this guy. :)
I like how joel was gonna pour the drink, then was like fuck it.

Joel gives a really good interview

Can't wait for the album. Think this one is going to be a little more personal and realistic. Keep up the great work man :)
Glad you posted this. It's really good. The talk about the new album makes me excited. (And as a 30-something electronica fan, a lot of this mass-produced bullshit makes me sad.)
KOAN - Sanctuary EP is a good example of an album laid out in a specific order
ugh
MIDA$ KOAN Sound or Koan? i think you mean KOAN Sound
Joel seems less awkward here, I think he's finally got the feel for interview..
Joel will always be my fav.! He is sassy ;) and i love your stuff dude

Nice to hear how Joel does business.
Great advice for electronic musicians, producers, and performers.
Thank you for sharing.
the audio is strange, it sounds like they took the direct audio from the interviewer but joels audio is like a camera record...
He’s wearing a mic so he’s not getting as much feedback off the acoustics in the room.
In case anyone is wondering about the shoes, they are RICK OWENS SS14 VICIOUS BOOTS

Deadmau5.....wearing a Misfits shirt......just when I thought Joel couldn't get any cooler, he wears a fucking Misfits shirt.
I love you, man!
Great interview, can't wait for the album and more news on the 2015 tour

To me this is the best interview to deadmau5 on the net. Thanks!
man joel when opening that coke was like hella nervous
great interview!
Joel is very nervous in the beginning.
nice to see not much has changed with you! keep it up
Joel is so wise and i do like his view on EDM, but people seriously we shouldn't care too much about the whole genre classification thing, i seriously don't care what type of Edm you make trap or big room house or minimal. its all about the music

Good to hear that you will be touring next year

What a musical pioneer and a fuckin hero. Napster, eat your heart out.
Joel is a genius says it how it is
this is great. so much wisdom

Wow thanks.
"The Alfa dog concept" lol ... Yeah I agree

I'd really like to hear his current opinions on the scene
