Nicely produced and interviewed. Ken Reed is a nice, down to earth guy with a sense of humour. Congratulations Commanche on the 20022 Sydney to Hobart win 😊
I started building fibreglas boats when I was14 in 1957. Launched PUFF 26' hard chine fin keel T-Bird in 1964. Sailed 73' "Bacarra" three times Ft. Lauderdale to Athens, Trinidad and Antigua in early 70's. 8 of us changing sails, navigating by the stars for two months. Heinken beer and chef to prepare meals. 110' mast, solid rigging, Hood sails, teak decks. We tried to make this 'gold plater' go as fast as it would but didn't want to break anything. I will be 75 soon and wish I could be young again to have stamina to be able to push the envelope on the new hi-tech racing machines. I used "Comanche, picture for photo of a sailing ship with the statement for my children that says." I know if I am lost you will sail the seas to find me.
Money doesn't necessarily make you happier. It just gives you more options. eg: an indestructible $5,000 all carbon 6-coffee cup holder instead of a flimsy plastic one. Love it.
Great video guys, appreciate the time taken to show us mere mortals what its like to be on such an amazing piece of machinery! Would love a follow up with a tour of the other super maxis!
So awesome! We blueqater cruise on a 1968 Morgan 45 and when we hit 5 knots we think we are booking it, 8 knots is flying!! This machine is beyond my wildest dreams!!
This boat is beyond the wildest dreams of the designers back then. The bottom of the hull is flat, with no fat keel sticking down. The mast is over 100 feet tall, and the canting keel changes the whole dynamic of sailing. They can crowd on much more sail than older boats can imagine.
Thank you for an amazing video! You guys just happened to catch Kenny Read in a talkative mood without any big project he was wrapped up in. This boat was brand new out of the box when this was filmed, literally, and the crew were still learning about how to sail Comanche. They lost to Wild Oats, coming in second, after an incredible start where Comanche blew away the rest of the fleet. A few months after this was filmed, Comanche ran in the Transatlantic Race, which is held occasionally. During the race, Comanche set a new record for distance traveled in 24 hours for a monohull sailboat. 618 miles in 24 hours. An average speed of 27 knots is needed to make that distance in 24 hours. A nautical mile is 1.2 miles. Again, thank you for an excellent video, featuring Ken Read talking about the newest super-maxi sailboat. Great job!
I was expecting an extraordinarily spartan interior, but two camping stoves and a carbon toilet smack-dab in the middle of the room... Holy hell 🤣 The biggest luxury on the entire vessel is that the navigator actually gets a real desk and chair
Great video. Loved Ken Read. Totally a big picture guy, like a captain should be. He's clearly delegated entire systems to his team. That's a pre-requisite for winning races, imo. I'm sure that captains who try to carry and who dictate never make it to that level. Teamwork is vital, but clearly having fun is also vital because fun keeps teams hungry.
on a Comanche v2 you can consider a hydro generator for when you are going at great speeds it can produce a decent amount of electricity to power a winch for the sails.
@kenread great to see you kick ass again. Super interesting video, even if almost unwatchable due to poor sound. I had to smile about that silva analogue compass, I had fitted the exact same on my pirate class dinghy when I took it for a cruise from Hamburg to Copenhagen ca 25 years ago, because it was the lightest and cheapest. But in those pre GPS days it was also our main refererence for navigation. :-)
Have followed Comanche for quite some time now. Great to to be able to see how the girl is fitted out. My other favourite yacht Wild Oats docked behind her.
I had a hunter 29.5ft racing sloop. It was so much fun. Just too many things wrong with it, and didn't have the money to fix everything so ended up selling it. I do miss sailing ⛵️ though.
I'm watching the MOB drill carefully and struggling to make it out. Did two people swim out? Is that a little RC torpedo that pays out the halliard so fast? All pretty cool and must make the crew feel better.
@@wardaddy6002 Change you business model before it's too late. You could wrap them in Dacron instead it might be cheaper. You will loose some performance but it won't be that bad.
Comanche sailed into no wind, while Wild Oats headed inshore and was able to pickup some breeze and gained a 35 nautical mile lead over Comanche. However, when they got the breeze Wild Oats had they brought that gap back to around only 8 nautical miles. Essentially, Wild Oats just kept in the pressure the whole way :)
Did they made any changes/improvements to the boat (since this video), or just changed captain in order to brake that transatlantic record by more than a day?
Is it breaking the sound barrier? At what time will it arrive at Alpha Centauri? People are so proud, but we hardly leave the earth, burning the equivalent of half a rain forest, just getting to the moon. No respect!
what should if the most rigging especially by snails rolls change down at plastik gears down teetwheals not need rope weight.with accelerator servowinch what said mechanical simpley
Great piece, allowing us to see & better understand the powerful innovations on spectacular Comanche. However I found the sound effects for the video intro & scene transition very unpleasant...blaring, unnecessary & too loud for comfort; the interview sound quality however was excellent, very professional.
Is it allowed to cant the mast like a windsurfer does? Like down draft instead of up draft? Like pulling the hull out of the water instead of pushing it down? Why do I only hear a canting keel? Doesn't the keel turn a couple of degrees? Is this really the latest technology? Syllogic used self learning software for optimized trim, and it would be great if they had a ship like Comanche. Do check their concept, if you don't know about Syllogic. A turning keel will result in a ship that does not drift sideways anymore. Ever thought how much drag you'd lose, reaching? Syllogic has done that. And it has strange consequences, a turning keel and a canting mast, the boom needs to point somewhere else. Traveller and main sheet need a change, and it takes time to learn how to sail upwind again, for it is something entirely new. How the Syllogic team moved on, I don't know. They participated in the STAR, and the keel broke, so, no finish. But I read the book and it was a remarkable project. Just a canting keel? Great, but never forget there are more options to get a ship faster. And it is not that far fetched, really, please think about it.
@@scottholman3982 I do not mean twist or flex, that is for trimming. I was talking about a mast canting towards the wind. Canting the other way, so to say. Consider the advantages, it is way faster. Perhaps that would be a great addition to the foiling cats, making them even faster, by reducing the drag a bit further.
One of the major components of the boat is the canting keel. To maximize the leverage, the keel needs to be long. Also, the long, thin keel is more effective at reducing lee way, or the tendancy to move sideways.
I wonder if you could copy the design of a boat like this, but make it out of marine plywood instead of carbon fiber to make it more affordable for a less affluent sailor?
It is even 1150 square meters! A bit more than 1.15 m2. The rest of the world has weird units and weird interpunction. Some even drive the wrong side of the street. Bet they consist of anti-matter?

Hopefully, you folks will be building more of the these carbon fiber maxi yachts.
Nice watch, Ken.
great to see it all put together.
Thanks Jon!
very good job guys!
TORPEN SAILING thanks so much!
Yes I know more thanks to all of you
on a Comanche v2 you can consider a hydro generator for when you are going at great speeds it can produce a decent amount of electricity to power a winch for the sails.
But that would produce more water resistance..
Why increase drag when you can move the sails with movable ballest (humans)
I spy Casio Pathfinder PAW1500T on Ken Read' s wrist. Love mine too!
GREAT Video Keep it up!!! I LOVED IT
I enjoy it great footage nice work
dj Jeff cee thanks it's a fast boat
Wow what a toy to have .
Its not what I want but its cool .
Had a small hope seing ken reed in alicante in october, but i gues he still has fun with this boat and choses "inshore" races 😋
Kjøkken Montørene he has a busy schedule with the Americans Cup and the new J Classic Boats this year I know that much

Julian Smith you should check out the new Black Jack which is the old Alfa Romeo - Sydney Hobart will be interesting
@Julian Smith:
Actually they lay in port back to back - which one docked "behind" the other clearly is subject for debate! ;-D
Technically it's stern to stern but since Wild Oats own that marina let's just say Wild Oats is behind Kenny on camera.
Amazing boat. Thanks to the team for the fantastic insight on the tour. A dream of mine to sail

You can listen to Ken until 13:22 Then you finally get inside...
Nice boat! I wouldnt want to be a board her out at sea but hey, thats no fault of hers but of mine.
whats a reaching condition?
When the wind is coming from the side, about 90 degrees to about 20 degrees relative to the mast.
A video of the Comanche, that shows the Comanche 30 seconds and 45 minutes of a man talking about the boat.
Is it true that Comanche was sold after this year's Sydney Hobart race?
Yes I bought it and hauled it out to Arizona and turned it into a burger joint.
@@wardaddy6002 Do you at least sell decent burgers?
@@KyriafinisBill Yeah, but the overhead is killing me. These carbon fiber disposable plates are costing me a fortune.

So how did Wild Oats defeat Comanche on the 2nd day especially when Comanche had such a big advantage at the start.

However, when they got the breeze Wild Oats had they brought that gap back to around only 8 nautical miles. Essentially, Wild Oats just kept in the pressure the whole way :)
So Ken's fault?
;)
I think it was light air when they were going up the Durwent River. Comanche stalls in light air.
Did they made any changes/improvements to the boat (since this video), or just changed captain in order to brake that transatlantic record by more than a day?
Ken Reed was unable to make it for the Trans Atlantic race due to prior commitments which conflicted with the weather window.
Music?
music at beginning and end is from Lost Tonight by Saje, hope you enjoyed the video!
