The first transgression was quite minor, compared to a federal crime. In a way, it worked out best that OP didn't press charges initially, because the Karen may not have opened the letter, which earned her an eviction and got her out of OP's life.

@@laurieharper1526 I strongly disagree. The Karen called the cops on THEM. Any benefit of a doubt of a mere transgression goes out the window. She tried to get them in trouble, they should press charges when it backfires.

I was a truck driver. Many years back I talked to another driver who told me this story: He was in a truck stop restaurant in the smoking section when an older couple came into the smoking section and ordered coffees. The driver finished his meal and lit up a cigar. The older couple asked him to put it out and he responded that he was in the smoking section and intended to smoke. They called the manager. The manager asked him to put out the cigar. The driver stayed calm and explained how he had just bought $300 worth of diesel fuel, just finished a $25 meal while the couple only had coffee and intended to spend another $100 in the truck stop store. He was smoking in the smoking section, the older couple bypassed plenty of seats in the non--smoking section. Who did the manager think his real customer was? The manager asked the couple to refrain from bothering the trucker and to move into the non-smoking section.

I live in a high rise. We have a bank of mailboxes in the lobby. We also have a high turnover in the building. Everybody's mail goes to everybody else and even people that have passed away still receive mail at this address. One particularly nosy woman decided it was her job to take the letters and flip them back into the mailbox slot. Which meant they went all the way to the next major big city before they came back to the post office in our city. One time a letter she threw in the slot took 70 days to return back to me with the yellow sticky note on the bottom. By the way, our post office is one block away. That's right, one block. I complained to the manager, and she put up a great big sign saying nobody can touch the mail.

'APC' is my motto - 'Always Press Charges'. Home invasion??? Pressing charges on that is not 'petty', it's *needed*.
Lots of people who don't press Charges are like 'I just wanted her out of my sight' or 'She had a kid with her' or something else that they didn't want to 'bother' with.
And *that's* where escalation happens. That's how we get Karen's who screech "I have a kid/I'm a single mother!" when managers ask them to leave, or people don't give up their non-priority seat on a more-than-half-empty bus/train - just because Karen wants *THAT* seat by *THAT* window.
This is where we get Karens who make scenes for the very fact that people will cave 'just to get them out of their sight'.
      APC - A.P.C!!!!!

When I first moved into the apartment I live in, I had a young couple next door. He was a guitarist and drummer for a local band who thought it was perfectly appropriate to practice between midnight and 5 am! It was so loud, I couldn't even hear my TV, nor could I sleep. The thing is, when I complained to the landlord about it, the neighbor literally almost attacked me out in front of the building. He was screaming at me about when and where he was supposed to practice and I strongly suggested renting a studio or a garage, but not in a 6-plex where other people are trying to live! They moved out soon after, thank God!

Talk about overkill

    • @randomstuff-qu7sh
      @randomstuff-qu7sh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@SLOTHSRIDEUNICORNS As a general rule, especially when dealing with neighbors, its a good idea to handle issues at the lowest possible level, escalating only when resolution at that level cannot be achieved. For instance, if its a noise issue, try talking civilly to the neighbor first. Midnight to 5am is rough for people who work regular day shifts, but maybe if the practice could shift earlier or later, so its not interrupting sleep, its less of a problem. If the neighbor isn't willing to be reasonable, then the landlord would be the next person to talk to. If the noise is violating the terms of the lease, that gives you even more to present when requesting the land lord take action. Police should be a last resort. When it comes to civil matters, unless the law is being broken, there really isn't much the cops can do other than wear an official uniform when saying the same thing to the guy that you already said.

Especially in OPs case because that step-child has an absent father himself and clearly OP knows that what he did to his biological children impacted them and he's filling in as the father for his step-son. To not treat him the same is to essentially make the same mistake over again, the real solution is to spend time (maybe even on OPs own dime) with his biological children as well so that they can get some time with their father, better late than never. Would they rather their last memory with him be discriminating against a child in the same kind of situation as them and then having a HUGE fight with him only for him to disenherit them all together and never speak to them again? Because if you push hard enough it can happen.

Decades ago. First full time job I had, company's new facility had a lunch area that was an outdoor patio, sliding doors for bc weather etc. I smoked back then (quit several years later), and my coworkers and I decided that since we had good air circulation, we smokers would sit apart from everyone else not to bother the nonsmokers. Keep in mind this was years before smoking restrictions started going I. Place.
So we're sitting there during lunch break, food done, chatting and having an after dinner smoke. A few minutes in, younger girl, nonsmoker came and sat in middle of our group, and immediately began b*tching about the smoke. None of said a word, just kind of blinked, and, as if we were joined by a Vulcan mind meld, we all took deep drags off our cigs, then blew it all in her face at once.
When she complained, she got informed we separated to spare others the smoke, so she was out of line pulling what she did.

try to look at it from the viewpoint of OP's kids: they spend their whole childhoods with a father who didn't show them any love at all or that he even cared about them. their father cares about them now that they are adults but that is only because as adults, both of them are useful to him since they help out in his business and make it grow. their father only started caring and "loving" them now that he can get a financial use out of them. at the same time, both of them have to watch their father treat a stepson with the very exact same love and affection that their father had denied them their whole lives. OP's kids have every right to feel angry and betrayed. OP is a very selfish and toxic man and I wouldn't be surprised at all if his kids would simply walk away and cut all contact.

I feel like dad is TA though, even though not a big one. If what the children said is true, which he implies it is, I think he owes his children something for that, and in his case inheritance is a possibility. He should be more supportive of them now of course and help them more to make up for it but we shouldn't kid ourselves.... Some parents only have money left to show they care for their children, because they didn't build or destroyed their relationship. I can't blame his children for feeling like that, but I think it's his money and he can do with it what he wants.

I think the dad wanting to leave an equal 3rd to each kid was perfectly fine. If he really wanted to he could just leave it all to charity and tell them to pound sand.
It is his money and it is nice of him to leave it for them.
The fact that his two biological kids said they deserved the money because they had worked hard to get a relationship with him comes across as dishonest. Like they are simply biding their time till dad dies so they can run off with the money. They may not mean it that way, but it kind of comes across that way.
Inheritance fights can get nasty. People are better off to make their wills with a lawyer and an impartial witness then speak about it to no one. They ask, just say I have a will and the lawyer has a copy. Don't worry about it. If they insist on pressing for info and details ask if they are looking forward to you dying? Will it upset them, sure, but them being vultures about it makes their supposed love of you questionable.

He's been in his stepson's life since he was 8 and plans and wants to be his dad going forth so it makes perfect sense that he wants to include him in his will. @zuzax1656 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

True, but back then you could open a window on the bus (not possible today), and airplanes exchange the entire air supply every 2-5 minutes, depending on the aircraft, altitude, and number of passengers. If they didn't, everyone would die of CO2 poisoning (from everyone just breathing) within an hour.
As for smoking in restaurants, that is still an option on some places, as that isn't a federal law, but state or local laws that restrict it.
Edit: For clarification, smoking sections on aircraft were normally at the rear of the plane, where the exhaust, or vents to the outside were placed. Ram air and/or air from the engine compressors were fed to the front of the cabin and through the little vents above your head. That 'fresh air' you could control is, in fact, outside air fed to you from the aircraft's systems.
In restaurants, it is much the same. Those big vents above the grill pump out a lot of air from the kitchen area, drawing lots of fresh air into the dining area from outside or through heat exchangers.
This is why the air in your house is anywhere from 10 to 25 times as toxic as the air on a plane, bus, or restaurant.

Story 4: The first time Karen came barging in she's already trespassing plus invasion of privacy. Second time she barge in and reveal that OP is pregnant that's where the second count of invasion of privacy happen. When Karen show photo of OP and her friends to her husband that's where the third count of invasion of privacy. The fourth count of invasion of privacy is when things get serious as not only did she stole OP's mail key she also stole her gender reveal letter which both are consider a single felony crime of mail theft so she'll be in jail for 10 years as that's two count of mail theft she committed. I don't know how long she'll get sentence if they decide to add the four count of Invasion of Privacy and the one count of trespassing.

"this kid i've known for 4 years, is worth as much for me as you two whom i've seen growing and whom i've laked and failed as a father"
simple line? yeah, his money his decision, but i'd wise up to that man, and just cut all ties with him, erase him from my life, you dont get to make my childhood a shitty experience, and later make some other kid live a dreamy life and expect ME to be ok with it
try to also see it from the POV of the kids, he is being the father they needed, the dude abandons his kids and makes them go trough god knows what, and he knows he cant turn back time, so what does he do? "you see this kid, whos father doesnt love him enough? i wana treat him, as you two wished i've treated you, dont you agree i am a good parent?"

Why does it talk about OP giving "a large chunk" to wife and stepson and "a smaller portion" to his children, or that he would "pick his stepson as his preferred child"? He admitted that he was an absent parent. He doesn't mention paying support, which makes me wonder, but let's say he did. He was absent, so his money became the only thing he contributed to his children growing up. And now, he's got his do-over family? The stepmother that's a peer to them and the new child that's young enough to be their child? To them, this is probably another way that he's told them over the years that they aren't as important. 4 years is not a long time. I have socks older than their relationship.

As someone with both a half brother and 2 step siblings (one from each step parent) on top of my 2 sisters I am completely on board with him treating his stepson as his own in regards to inheritance especially since he is actually helping raise him. He's not giving the step son more but an equal amount I definitely see this as the best scenario from what he shared.
Honestly each scenario will be different as previously mentioned I have 2 stepparents, 1 who helped raise me from 12yrs onwards and still helps me to this day and another who married my father several years after I left home and who I have a very different relationship with. I imagine that my sisters and I will get a fairy equal share in any inheritance as he's made it clear that he sees us as his own kids (even getting our names tattooed on him along side his biokids) however I don't expect anything from my stepmother. Similarly I don't imagine my mum giving much to my step sister as she was an adult by the time mum and us kids came on the scene but whould be surprised if my dad didn't leave anything for my step brother as he married his mum when he was a teen and he still lives with them atm.
Honestly it really comes down to whether the step parent considers the stepchild their own and if the answer I'd yes how could they treat them any differently.
I also acknowledge heirlooms are a bit different and the majority will most likely go to biokids but given the sentimental value of such items would be greater for them in this case it makes sence to me.

I get that the dad was didstant and emotionally not available for his kids growing up, but it sounds like he was doing the best he could in the time and circumstances for those kids aka being the only source of income that was wavering for a family of four. He had to bust butt and sacrifice for his family and yeah it sucks but he was doing his best. Circumstances have changed, he has more time and income and lest responsibility now so.. yes he can be the dad his bio kids wanted to his step kid. And he’s trying to make right that he wasn’t the best to his bio kids. He is now again doing the best he can. The inheritance is more of an issue of feeling owed than of owing. They think they are entitled to the money due to their childhood? He may have been always working and emotional distant but he was there. OP's stepson does not really have his father in his life. OP realizes his mistakes with his other children and he is in a better situation than when his children were growing up.
No parent is perfect and OP admits he was not the best father when his children were growing up and according to him, he has worked hard to make up for that. OP leaving more to the step child would be favoritism. OP is splitting it equally. I am sure that the stepchild would not care about getting anything. I know I did not care I did not get any of the monetary funds from my stepfather when he died. No amount of money from my stepfather could ever replace the time I spent with him and OP's stepson would probably feel the same say.
OP's children need to realize that the money does not mean anything. Is OP's children going to destroy the relationship they built with their father, over money? When OP dies the money is not going to make it better.
