    If you are installing the ARB into a housing that has the seals inboard, such as the Dana 30, you don't need to cut the drain slots. Those slots are for axles that have seals to the outsside like a Dana 44. The slot is needed to allow oil to drain back into the diff. As far as the comment about the case spreader, you can absolutely get the correct preload without one. A case spreader can be nice but definitely not necessary.

    Interesting. Having no hills or rocks in my area, only sugar sand, ARB and wider sand tires is probably the only mods I would consider. I have a Detroit Locker on my '68 C10 and I would definitely go ARB on my daily driver. Instalation of the Detroit Locker and 4/10 gears was the only modification on the '68 I paid to have professionally installed rather than do myself, and the only modification I had issues with due to improper Instalation. I won't make this mistake again.

      The ARB sounds like a great choice for you! It is unfortunate that it ended up giving you problems though. Honestly it is difficult to choose a good place to get meticulous work done at (like a gear install) unless you heard first-hand from other people who used a certain business or service. Did this place at least honor a warranty??

      Hey there- The ARB actually was for a friend and customer of mine but he enjoyed them! Actually is upgrading to one ton axles now but he chose to get ARB's again. Let me know how the build goes on the F150!

    That looks like a very nice install. If you don't mind me asking, what's the name of your shop and what state are you operating out of? Lockers are one of those things that I'm not comfortable doing myself but also wanted it done right.

      Thank you Kenneth! It’s called 4Link4WD LLC and I’m in Pennsylvania. Not currently taking any jobs as I’m in a transition period but that will change soon! If you are around this area, I can definitely recommend you to a guy who is very good at differential setups and would do the lockers for you 👊🏼 Message me if you want more info! how much pressure does it take to engage your locker.I have put 2004 dana 44 axles under my 98 TJ and they came with independant motors to pump the air.well i was told they were E-Lockers so just straight switch and 12 volts and your good.Well i found out he told me a half truth.So my problem is i dont have all the wiring for switches to engage lockers and i dont know if motors work yet but he said they did.so i have the wires from diffs and air line running to the air motors.but can you tell me where i might get any info on pressure switches if needed and switches and how these wire up at least half way right.how many thousands did you have on back lash.Mine seem tight and i plan on checking this cause i dont know if it has been messed with.Sealant on diff cover looked factory but just try to make sure .they say arb type lockers are usually a little tighter tolerance.Please point me to a video if you know any or if you can help i would be very grateful.Great video by the way.Right to the points and good job,for sure.good luck and thank you.,Sincerely,Robert

      Hi Robert- I apologize for just seeing your comment now. I really don't know what the pressure is supposed to be but I bet you can call the ARB customer service number (425) 264 1391 to get some help specifically with that. Thanks for watching and for the comment!

    How much did this ARB upgrade cost ?

    • @4link4wd
      @4link4wd  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there thanks for the interest! So I actually am not sure as my customer supplied all the parts that he got a good deal on. I’m not sure what all it would cost to order all these parts, except the ARB itself is over $1000 I know. Then factor in the gears, overhaul kit (usually costs as much or more than the gears) and all the odds and ends. You also need an air supply for this setup so you can order the ARB air compressor options or use your own custom setup some how

    Could you not have put the tubing in before you dropped in the diff to have more room to work with it?

    • @4link4wd
      @4link4wd  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jon Becker yes that’s a good point, and you can sort of do that. The problem is the tubing is connected to the spacer that ride on the carrier journal so you could roughly prebend the tubing with the diff out but you need to put the tubing on the carrier during the final install. So it would need to come back out anhway

    Can u do it with the axle on the truck?

    • @4link4wd
      @4link4wd  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi @mustaccord , thank you for the interest and watching the video! So that is a good question. The short answer is yes you can. But I can tell you from experience that working in those conditions is much more challenging and shops will charge more that way than if you just dropped off the axle by itself. With that being said, someone with a lot of experience and all the right tools (I lack many helpful tools still) could get this job done under the Jeep without much trouble.

    I have a problem with ARB lockers. The twin o rings inside the seal housing mounted onto the bearing journal is so low quality. They begin to leak after a year and start to pump your diff oil out to the air pump and now you have an oil leak from your air pump. And when the leak increases with more wear, your lockers stop locking. You have to dismantle the whole diff to change those washers. And guess what, those also wear and here we go again. They are constantly subjected to friction when the axles are moving. This is a big big design weakness. I prefer electrically operated lockers now.

    • @cawicker3410
      @cawicker3410 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting review from a consumer using the product. You would think with all the cash coming in from the $1k+ bumpers ARB is pushing off the name they made with their air lockers, continued quality engineering would be top priority. Electric would eliminate the need for the on board air compressor deal, too.

    • @geoffmooregm
      @geoffmooregm 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have had mine in for 5 years and they were bought used. I don't have any leaks.
      You must have an installation error. Things like not enough preload on the carrier bearings can cause the issue you are describing. I would consult with ARB before you pull it out the next time.

    • @4link4wd
      @4link4wd  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that is interesting. It sounds like it definitely is a possible failure point. I know if one of the O-rings gets moved, twisted or cut upon installation, it will cause problems. With that said, I feel electric lockers are more simple and have less failure possibilities. Just my thoughts! Thank you for the comments

    • @bojk13
      @bojk13 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@4link4wd because in my experience unless you have a spreader you simply cannot get the shims in. And if you beat them in there's a great chance that you're going to damage either the carrier or a sham or side of the bearing or something. Ask me how I know. You got to have a spreader to be able to put the proper amount of preload on the bearings

    • @4link4wd
      @4link4wd  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brian Oberlin much appreciated on the tip! I absolutely agree though. I think was able to make it work fine but the situation isn’t ideal and I am definitely getting a spreader before I work on any other diffs. Thank you 👊🏼

      @boatsandjeeps780 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      People everywhere pro shops to , do it without the spreader with great success, im sure the spreader makes it easier , but if u dont have it , its not impossible, sometimes being handy with tools goes along way. , only thing I was curious bout was how u measured for shims , how does that usually work out for you? I've always bout extra bearing and grind inside race to be a tight fit by tapping it on and off for setting shims ,then once its right tap grinded bearing off and clean and press on new bearing , of course it takes longer, but didn't know u could measure it
