Your advice is PERFECT. My puppy's breeder did free feeding, possibly due to being away during lunch time. I have had adults, with fixed feeding. My puppy developed some food anxiety, and was leaving portions of a meal "for later". It took me 3 weeks to change to fixed portions, and I had to pull her dish after each meal to teach her to eat it all within a fixed amount of time. This technique works!

Other important health aspects to consider is that by grazing food throughout the day, their teeth always has kibble stuck in them and it's much worse for them. Also when dogs fast/aren't digesting anything, the body starts doing maintenance and repair. If the body is constantly digesting it never gets a break to enter this state of autophagy. It simply isn't natural for adult dogs to eat throughout the day, or even have breakfast lunch and dinner. The way adult dogs are designed to eat is by eating 1 large meal (Like when a prey animal is consumed) and then basically nothing untill next big meal time.

May I introduce you to a female sighthound, who will hunger strike for a couple of days (free feeding and scheduled feed). And it's really not abnormal for them. (But, you do have great advice - they are just weird dogs, lol)

I am a firm believer in feeding species appropriate food. I feed raw or gently cooked so it always is fresh and gobbled up in minutes.

I'm transitioning my new puppy's diet rn and I have to hand it to her kibble brand, it's quality stuff, but it's still going away except for training bites bc I'm worried she'll bloat on it as she's a living vacuum cleaner. Can't believe the level of ignorance most people have about biology. I kid you not, I told my neighbor I was going with some of our moose and elk meat to get her stomach used to unprocessed meat and she got furious and told me she feeds her dog vegan and game meat is filth. Vegan dog?! What in God's name?! I got mad in turn and told her she was torturing that dog and to be sure to tell the vet that it's her fault when the poor thing doesn't live past 5. We got so angry at one another that if her kids weren't there, we might've slapped each other. Haven't spoke since, and I'm sorely tempted to sneak that pitiful pupper some secret meaties, but I'm afraid it'll make her sick since she's probably never had it.

This is so true even with meal fed dogs. My dog listens to me the most in the mornings when he's hungry 😂

Thank you for the video! Good information on another way to keep an eye on our dog’s heath.
Our 11mo pup spent 4 days w/my sister & her family while we were out of town. We meal feed using kibble & mealtime for training. The first couple of days back pup was not eating when normally she eats all her food quickly. I pulled the food but kept a very close eye on her. She returned to her normal eating after a couple of days.
What happened was my sister free feeds her dogs so there was food available all the time. Also, to help ease stress they bought a variety of puppy treats which she loved and enjoyed through the day. No harm done. She loves her kibble again and is back to her normal happy routine. So glad we had a way to measure & monitor.
    😊👍

I bought an 8 week old GSD from a breeder, who supplied the complete food she'd weaned them on. It was what you would call "kibble" I fed the required amount [measuring jug supplied], She ate 1 kibble at a time!! She could reach the large container where it was stored. And used her nose to push it to the back, then she gently made the fronr a straight line. She is 6 years old now, is fed raw meat, which she wolfs. She needs the complete to ensure adequate vitamins/ minerals. as I cant feed her the whole meat animal [beef, chichen. lamb]. She has a fabulous figure, her fur glows [she's sable]. But they are all different. She still tidies her kibble nuggets!!

I have 6 month border collie girl. She is lovely, love cuddles, do tricks but she has strong instinct of herding. She loves to chase end herd running kids. She loves chasing birds. We spend 50/50 time on a leash or without it on our yard. We do walks, still pulls when excited.
In like 2 months I take her on vacation by the sea with me where a lot of ppl might be. Which of you movie training could help me improve with her behaviour, help her ignore the surrounding more.

Recently subscribed before getting our five month old puppy 2 days ago. We love your videos - non-threatening and positive reinforcement approach is what we really wanted to use.
Do you have any advice on how to introduce cats to our puppy? Our cats are both 4 years old, and have lived with us for two years. They lived with dogs before, but we are already noticing that one of our cats is very spooked.

Yes, Especially working breeds. I hand feed at first, but then I stopped because life got busy and just gave him 1 cup in the morning, and 1 at night in a bowl and he immediately became less interested in me. Working breeds like cattle dogs, BC, Poodles, and Spaniels and retrievers need regulation because they are more active.
It's not even about leadership for me, it's about interest and confidence. If my puppy is around something scary but want the food, then he's gonna ignore the scary thing and want to be with me, because I have the food.

well you can have regular kibble and special treats that they still crave. just for training, not for knowing if he is in good health etc though

What would be the proper way to feed three puppies?
We have three 10 week old lab puppies. Should we separate them all for feeding .

If you have to add a topper, would that not be a clear indication that the food is not good for them? I've learned so much from Dr. Judy Morgan about canine nutrition. She has great recipes for homemade food.

Well, I've fed dogs, a lot of different ways over the years. For the last 20 years, I have fed raw. But before that, I free fed kibble. Never had any issues. But I think it completely depends on your dog and the situation.

I take it you’ve never come across a Bedlington 😂 they will go 2-3 days and not eat. First time it happened i was really worried - thank goodness for social media. Good advice from other Bedlington owners, dont worry, if the pup is healthy, bright, lively then he/she will start eating again in a couple of days. He doesnt do it so much now hes nearly 4🤪

The advice given here is general, not breed specific. You pop up with an outlier. People with that breed should be aware of the peculiarity.

I’ve free fed my standard poodle from day one. I know he gets 3 cups a day (sometimes a little more). In the morning I put in 2 cups. He is not a morning eater. We go to the dog park mid morning. That’s when he poops , after running. When we get home he is then hungry and will eat his food somewhere after we get home or within a couple hours. Then when the bowl is empty that is my question to another cup. He is totally motivated by food and loves treats for training. Couple things.
He has a schedule he’s developed
I am older and could forget to feed at a meal time
    He self regulates
He isn’t “crazy “ at meal time like other dogs I’ve seen.
I agree it’s nice to use food as a training tool and yet my free feeder still in motivated by food.
I am aware of his eating habits and if I need to be away at a mealtime. I don’t have to freak out my dog has eaten enough through the day and if that last cup is a little late or even an our or more late he isn’t going crazy because his designated time has come and gone and he’s starving. Or feeling like somethings wrong , where is his leader.
I find there are advantages to both ways, I (at this time) prefer the free feed especially since I’m not a by the clock kind of person.

I didnt know free feeding was a thing. I always had them eat at schedualed times, then took what they didnt eat after no more than 10 minutes because I didnt want food sitting around to attract mice!😯 None of my dogs are overweight, and all physically fit.
