Just found the channel. Great content. I know this drainage well. My family started camping there every August for two weeks in 1964. By the time I was 13 my brothers and I were hiking to all those meadows. I taught my sons to fly fish in those meadows. That lower section of one of the tributaries just immediately above the trail head has never seemed to hold fish. Once you get to upper section its jammed with cut bows. Too bad sickness kept you from that spot. I quit going there only because I went to Montana in 1999. Since then I fish there. The lower elevation makes for easier back country hiking. I never saw anything but black bears there. Montana is different in that way. There are grizzly bears and I carry a gun in that country.
Great video, well done. It’s amazing that you’re catching such nice fish. I’m 70 years old and can’t wade anymore or walk very far. When you hooked a nice fish I kept saying: “Get it onto the reel!” That’s what I always used to say to myself. I fished mainly steelhead and I had to get them onto the reel. There used to be a lot more salmon and steelhead but there are too many people. You have to go where the people won’t go as you have. After your first day fishing you said: “The elk are bugling in the background, ………” I thought you guys were in Heaven. Stalking bugling elk with a bow is the most addictive thing I’ve done. Worse than fly fishing. Keep up the great work!
You guys made the right call by deciding to call the trip and looking out for each other. You guys still caught some damn good fish. After all, there wouldn’t be a meat hang without to two of you. Great video, really enjoyed this!
Have been watching your videos since I found them after a recent trip to Co. I can sit and watch for hours, the scenery, the fish, the music, it's all rad. Am just getting my feet wet fly fishing, backpacking , and fishing in Colorado but I am learning a lot from you. Am planning a 2 week trip backpacking and fly fishing next summer. Thanks for motivating me. Keep up the chill vibes and nonstop fishing.
I enjoy your videos. Makes me liytle jealous of your adventures. Here in saskatchewan the streams I fish are smaller, and hold smaller fish. Though they are still fun to target. As a bit of an advisory for all anglers out there, the fish that was caught around the 30min mark, may have had whirling diesease. Look into the diesease, check your waters you fish for the risk level. If there is a risk those waters are infected, follow the decontamination protocol. Whirling diesease is very hard on salmondae, 80-90% fry death rate.
Goons having fun is right! Tough break how things ended on the trip, but as you both realized... the time you had when things were good... were truly GOOD. Great fish, great scenery, and great company. Can't go wrong with any of that! Good decision to get outta there when you did. Being in the backcountry only compounds being sick. Definitely enjoyed this meat hang episode!
This is dope af! I just ran across your channel yesterday. Amazing videos! I'm hoping to do some hike in and fish trips in the not so far future, and getting some great ideas here. Thanks!
Another really good one dudes. Gotta pause it right now and finish it later but I like it so far lot. You guys ever wanna fish the West Yellowstone area, hmu.
Mad respect for the vids and fish. NGL, I wish you were a bit more discreet about the location. I’ve seen so many fisheries in this basin decline over the past 20 years due to over fishing. Even the back country stuff. Tight lines, and cherish these streams while they last. See you on the water!
Breaks my heart to see all of that dead timber. We started going into the San Juans for backpacking in the late 90's while most of those trees were still alive. Wolf Creek Pass was some of the best scenery that you could find in Colorado but thousands of acres of dead trees is just sickening. Eventually Aspen groves will fill in the voids but it will never be like it was before the mountain pine beetle showed up.
Hey there partner! Do you ever make your way up to Washington state? We have countless breathtaking rivers and streams and i would love to link up with ya and swing a fly or two!
Awesome vid as always guys! .. I live a hr west of ALB so im sure i will catch you onna stream sometime. Have you fished the San Juan river underneath Navajo reservoir?
Man, I know how hard these vids are to make and how challenging these spots are to get to, but usually are rewarded with great fishing...you have earned my sub sir. Shout out from oregon! You ever want to catch a steelhead hit me up!
Awesome video. I ordered some medium sized glass beads and New Zealand strike indicator tubing to tie the FAS ADD. When I’m trying to put the tubing on the glass bead it never fits over the beads and I just ended up with some messed up fingernails. Any tips? Thanks.
My ancestors put those cows there, sorry. Respect for the gates and fences is always appreciated, on public lands. Back when everything south of the Arkansas River was New Mexico, and before that Spain, they used the mountains as community-land. Under Guadalupe Hidalgo, Spanish laws managing natural resources were preserved to some extent, in Territorial New Mexico (now southern Colorado). I've seen some places where the livestock has really made a major mark on the streams. However, I'm quite confident that a livestock-trampled steam can be brought back to life. I'm pretty sure that Colorado dines on burger and not so much fillet, at least historically, so how can we create a better future? As I get older, I'm wondering why we keep developing all these recreation opportunities everywhere? I'd rather see more weekends of doing conservation work and less effort and time of recreation and/or preservation.
Mike, is there a way I can contact you to discuss out trip- Patrick and I. We are going bling and would like to know what camp site- etc. Not trying to burn your site. Anyway, love everyone of y’all’s videos. Maybe when can cross paths one day. Pax et bonum my friend. Mike. (Spanky!)
I enjoy your videos, very professionally done, fun to watch. The only thing more addictive than fly fishing is archery elk hunting, stalking big bugling bulls. I mainly fished for steelhead and salmon. It was impossible to strip in those fish. When watching you fight a fish I kept saying, probably to myself: “Get the fish onto the reel!” I’ve never caught a brown or bull trout. Lance Egan fishes the Rainbow Warrior a lot, hardly a “fly”, more of a lure. I used to use then when I could fish. After your first day fishing you said: “The elk are bugling in the background,…….” I thought: “Boy those guys are in Heaven!” America is so amazing. Thanks lots!
Hey Guys, it looks like both of you and myself have been fly fishing the same stream. I’m so sorry I don’t have photos to show you, but if I promise not to burn the fishing spot by posting it on here, but if I name it in a private email to you, will you send me one of your t shirts for your channel in size XL (in either purple or green as neither color attracts mosquitoes). 😇

On those high country creeks, the bank is indeed dank!
