Sea Holly is a low maintenance pollinator plant that will make a beautiful addition to your pollinator garden.
In addition to winter and indoor sowing, Sea Holly can be seeded directly into your garden in late summer or fall. If sowing indoors, place the seeds in the refrigerator for 4 weeks before sowing. Sea Holly requires cold stratification to germinate.
Following are other varieties of Eryngium:
    • Alpine Sea Holly (E. alpinum) - Native to alpine pastures of Switzerland, both the flowers and stems of this species are considered the bluest of the genus. Growing about 2 feet (60 cm.) high, you'll find this one at its peak during July and August.
    • Amethyst Sea Holly (E. amethystinum) - Growing 1-1½ feet (45 cm.) tall, this European native is one of the most cold hardy of the genus. It has beautiful amethyst blue flowers and a somewhat straggling nature.
    Zones 2-8
    • Mediterranean Sea Holly (E. bourgatii) - Native to Pyrenees, this variety reaches 1-2 feet (30-60 cm.) and consists of lively blue-green flowers with silver bracts and white veins within its coarse, spiny leaves. Zones 5-9
    • Giant Sea Holly (E. giganteum) - Also known as Miss Wilmot's Ghost (named for English gardener Ellen Wilmot), this Caucasus native makes an excellent plant for grouping in a background, growing from 3 to 4 feet (90-120 cm.) or higher. While it may require staking, its heart-shaped leaves and large flowers are worth the extra effort. Zones 4-7
    • Moroccan (E. variifolium) - grows in stiffly erect branched stems 12-18 inches tall and produces numerous silver-blue flower heads. Zones 5-9
    • Rattlesnake Master (E. yuccifolium) - A native to the eastern United States with creamy chartreuse, button-like flowers and strap-like leaves, this species reaches 2 to 4 feet (60-120 cm.) tall. Its name is said to derive from the myth that these plants could cure rattlesnake bites or drive them away. Zones 3-8
    • Common Sea Holly (E. maritimum) - This plant is one of the smallest, growing from 6 inches to 1 1/2 feet (15-45 cm.) high. Zones 4-9

Not only learned about a new plant but also a cool factoid that bees will overwinter in hollow plant stems if the opening is exposed. Thank you for a great video packed with practical information and no hype.

I had this plant and Russian Sage years back and am growing both from seed this year and quite excited to have them again. They should love the sandy arid garden we have. Yes, pollinators love those multi petaled flowers.

Sea holly is so beautiful 🌸 I used to grow one plant in a pot and then I planted it into the garden and the roots were eaten by voles. When I get hold of one again I will leave it in a container. Thank you very much for sharing 👍

I bought a pack recently. Just planted them last week and they are up already with those little rounded leaves. I had no idea they would get as big as your video shows. I have them both in pots currently but would love to put them into the ground by my garden eventually

Nice work Cathy! I love the way you document the whole season, very helpful! I subscribed, I know that being in south PA zone 7(ish) ...whatever you're growing, so can I! I wonder if I could head off the main stem before the flower stems pop out, to keep it shorter?

Exactly the same here! I did move some last year and thought I’d cleared it all to make space for a rose garden.
Nope. It grows deep. I was back in there today trying to get the last of it out so I can enrich the soil over winter here. I think it will be a life long struggle.
I moved the roots last year to where my echium is as that is “blue” corner.. at least that’s the plan.
But where I want to move my roses too? It’s going to be a struggle.
