I carried out this repair on my ex army 2A , I wish I'd seen this video a couple of years ago. Great job filming and posting this - I'm sure many will be grateful. Thank you
Thanks for that. Might be one to do over xmas holidays. I'll need to do this on my series 3 as although I have stopped the steering relay moving about and most of the ball joints have been replaced, it's still not right, though not terrifying any more.
good little fix, and something i need to do on mine , just dont seem to find time but early days yet . like a comment you just try and work through the jobs , at least i got a decent run with the overdrive fitted seems to be better at 20mpg , on a 2.6 straight six . so well pleased . i did double check .. lol... cheers
It wrote off an X5? Wow, I mean yeah they are mostly plastic but to drive away is something else. Interesting to see the state of your front axels. When we stripped our lightweight (30k miles, but had been sitting, 3/4 pistons froze and chassis rotted) the bsjs were completely intact because they put leather gater bags over it. Iirc the pins were just a little better than your passenger side, but we got new ones anyway because, you know, rebuild etiquette. We're rebuilding the axels now, but damn the hub assembly is complex. If you do plan to do a rebuild in the future, please video it so we can check it against yours!
+m1cr0man I'm told the X5 pulled out of a junction much too close. In the old days the car drove away, these days you walk away.... I quite like the idea of the leather gaiters for the front swivels, but they looks a swine to fit. I do intend to fully rebuild the front axle later on so I will film that. Cheers, Phill.
Just looking back at some old videos and spotted your comment. The front diff pinion bearings are on their last legs now, I've just ordered all the bits to rebuild the front axle - there will hopefully be a bit of film about it shortly. Cheers, Phill.
steamwally Awesome 🙂 I'll be looking forward to seeing that. We're actually rebuilding our axels now too. Got all the parts just got to put it together. Finally some progress on construction instead of deconstruction!
Hi, you must check the pre-load on both sides independently of each other. I checked and adjusted each side individually, one was found to have no pre-load and the other was nearly seized.
Looking and sounding better than ever, are you doing any more green laning now the weather's better? That Porsche was probably a w banker from Tunbridge Wells going for the land speed record. Bet you don't miss all that! If you know anyone who wants a swb 90 there's one bricked up in the basement of a building nearby, however they might think twice when they find out who owns it.. www.ghost-of.org/project-h.php
+rich3500 Going along quite well now, it will be really nice when the gearbox is in. No more green laning at the moment, I'll let the ground harden up a bit more and wait until the new gearbox is in - less muck to contend with that way! Certainly don't miss the T-Wells traffic one bit, went through the town last night and it pi**ed me right off! I see the domes on the roof of that place driving home from the workshop every day, I thought it was some kind of mosque!? Cheers, Phill.

I like the shimmable king pins, wish my old Ford front end was that adjustable. Thanks for the video!

Lots of things to adjust on a Land Rover, it's just working through it all on one that has been neglected...

Great video mate, thanks for posting it, I'm just doing the same on my 60's S2 88.
Glad you got it sorted, Phill
Really good stuff. Very interesting. Thank you. Nice truck too. I have a 1976 Series 3 Pick Up 109"
Thanks! To me, the pick up's are the best looking Land Rovers, particularly with truck cab.

Yeah takes a while to work through it all, sounds like yours is pretty well sorted!
Phill.
Excellent video. Thanks.
Really helpful - thanks indeed.

Hey mate I think I need to do the swivel pin adjustment. Do I need to do both sides, did you only do 1?
Hi, you must check the pre-load on both sides independently of each other. I checked and adjusted each side individually, one was found to have no pre-load and the other was nearly seized.
The swivel balls are not chrome plated according to rovers north, VT USA
Like everything with Land Rovers, I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule - but all the ones I have seen are hard chromed. ES, UK, BSA & sidecar :)
