  • This is shown as a pre-assembly test, but it could be carried out at any time.
The precision ground vice is handy..... but solid flat face will do if it can be clamped.

It's powerful enough to drive a sandblasting cabinet, and still refill the tank.
There are links to vids under menu 'info' showing sandblasting and a noise test - they are in English French and German.
You should be auto directed to the correct language version for you :)

Hello, do you know the allowable play on the gearbox of a Derbi/Piaggio engine? I think mine has more than allowed, but not sure what to do about the problem. Great video, btw!

      It's not clear Edward.
But primarily we are talking about the maximum play.
As stated.... the manual indicated no tolerance.
Therefore we assume that the 0.5mm play is probably close to max.
If the play is more than 0.5mm.... you need to question:
      Have you stripped the gearbox?
If so.... have you replaced the shims correctly?
If you have not split the gearbox... and the play is more than 0.5mm... you may need to strip the box, and renew the shims.
Try to be confident with your measurements.
Clearly, it is better if these measurements are made on a piece of float glass.
But, regardless... the measuring point is set at the point of measurement.
So... as long as the work-bench is flatish... you can measure the gap at that point.
      Watch the video clearly.
I extend the shaft to its maximum.... to touch a flat object.
Then I pull the shaft back.
The gap that remains IS the play.
      If 40 + 15 = 55 .... and it slides without interference.
      Try 60.
If it slides without interference.... then the gap is looking a bit too large.
      Good luck!
... and report back, on how you got on :)

Will do as soon as I can find somewhere there is information about the play in the gearbox on a Derbi Piaggio engine, because I don't have the AM6 engine. After that I will try measuring my exact play. By the way, is the play coming from the shims tearing down after time?

Don't forget the shims can move on the alloy casings.
      Plus everything can wear.
So regardless of the sources of wear, the key is to limit the play,
My guess is that the 0.5mm is probably fine for all these engines.
But I reckon the biggest reason for excessive play will be that the gearbox has been stripped, and a shim forgotten.
If that's the case, then it will require an engine strip, as the shim is the bearing surface.... Aluminium alloy will not suffice.
In these situations 'hope' is irrelevant.
Only you can make this decision.
      :)

Yes, the engine has been stripped open many times. I have my gearbox out now, so I will try to understand the schematics of the engine/gearbox to check if I am missing a shim.

Is there any original shim sizes on am6? Every shims to transmission in my am6 seems to be missing. Thanks

And is there any site i can buy the shims at? I searched alot but i can’t find anything.

      That's not good.
Here is a post showing shim positions on the Rieju version of the engine.

However, over time components get replaced, so the dimensions mentioned are just guidelines.
The best thing is to check the play:
Selector shaft end play: 0.5 mm
Driving shaft end play: 0.5 mm
Driven shaft end play: 0.5 mm
Carry out the measurement at the threaded end of the driving shaft
at the splined end of the driven shaft and selector shaft.
Therefore, you could nip up the cases without shims, and measure the play
... then order a selection accordingly.
Note that there is a shim on the balance weight.

Shims are a standard engineering item.
They can also be bought online from motorcycle spares dealers.
All online Aprilia dealers use the same expanded diagram sales system, that allows you to identify parts and then buy them.
