To me he is the best blues slide player ever. Rivaled only in my opinion by some of the late, great Duane Allman's bottleneck slide work from back in the 60's and early 70's. Both were incredibly gifted, virtuoso slide players, but Winter was, IMO, a bit faster with that "pinkie slide" than Allman was with his "ring-finger" slide, and Winter was I think more skilled and polished because Allman's time was so brief dying in that motorcycle crash a month shy of his 25th birthday.
I have to agree with you on the fact that Winters was amazing and only got better with time. He was definitely amazing. I was a big fan. Although I’m such a big Allman Brothers fan and the biggest reason is and was because of Duane Allman. Look when I was in my teens I was lucky enough to see them in concert more than I probably should have. I couldn’t keep my eyes off Duane and it wasn’t because I was a young infatuated girl. I couldn’t keep my eyes off of his hands!! I know, weird right ! But there you have it ! Then I read anything I would come across about him, how he was self taught and his progression over the next years. Then out of nowhere he dies and I was crushed. I still read everything I could find. I read articles about some really top dogs in the industry who couldn’t get him on their recordings fast enough. Then hearing some others talking about how he was the one who taught them how to use the slide. His portfolio was very extensive. I’ve always wondered just how far he would have gone had he not died so early. I’m 65 now and I still wonder just what would have happened had he lived a full life. I sound like a true lunatic don’t I ? I promise I’m not. Just a true fan. Bet you didn’t think you were going to get an ear full did ya ! 🤣🤣🤣
@@sherryarflin726 Johnny Winters was absolutely a great player, Imo his style was more along that of Texas blues. I think Duane established a style of slide play that was more his own. He was just learning what he could do, having not been a slide player very long. Some are just born with it. It was Duane and Dickey's play with the ABB that inspired me when I was 15 to pick up a guitar and attempt to learn to play. I'm almost 65 now and they still nspire me. I think that mantle has now fallen to Derek Trucks and he may have surpassed both JW and DA. Just my opinion.
I’m not sure if you’re scolding me like a recalcitrant child or what. I agree with what you are saying and it was my father and my brother that encouraged me to pick up a guitar when I was 12. I think that’s why I was so awed by Duane. I thought Betts was was a great guitarist also. As far as Derek Trucks. That kid was phenomenal at 13 and only more so as an accomplished musician now. I’m also as I sad a big fan of Winters. Always was. 😁
I'm old enough and fortunate enough to have seen Johnny Winter in his prime a few times back in the 70s. Known among his peers as the fastest left hand in the business. It's worth being old now to have been young then.

Me too ... saw him in the late 80's and he 'ahem' opened up for George Thorogood at Darien Lake in NY ... yeah well he made Lonesome George look like a rank amateur.
50 years ago all the genres were rollin' and tumblin' all night long..
Saw him in 1975 with Rick Derringer. First was James Gang, then Leslie West and Mountain! Finally after Johnny was Alice Copper. And all for 8 bucks.

Duane Allman was a great slide player, but Johnny was King and this song proves it. Best slide solo ever.

He’s not there because the Hall is a joke! Marshall Tucker Band and I could list many more that should be in that aren’t also. Johnny was amazing! Floyd Radford the other guitar player on this smoked also.
@@razorsharpe3371 first non African American inducted into the Blues HOF. That surely with a $20 bill will get you an espresso shot at Sbux. Charming rendition. I prefer the studio version, less stacato, more controlled, gravelly slide, and more interlaced instrumentation. The drumming here is very dull, and no bass line whatsoever.

When the bands are inducted, they are also voters.
The public needs to vote for the people who deserve to be inducted....
There are some really screwed up decisions made, such as the second version of Heart, who had some of their biggest hits NOT being inducted.

From what I've heard, since both brothers are albinos, they're eyes are very sensative to bright lights, so pretty much they had to stay indoors, and their parents had just encourged them to make all the noise they wanted in the house. Both play many different instruments, from drums/percussion, guitars, bass, pianos and key instruments, wind instruments, singing, and what ever they can get their hands on, also at the age of 4 or 5, they were already performing, put all that into one big pot, stir it up, and you get these two cats.

I was at that show. Oakland Coliseum, on a bright sunny day with 80,000 people . There was an LSD punch going around for all to participate in. It was mayhem. But Johnny and his brother, who came on next wore big 1940's gangster hats to shield the sun. That's it. Montrose, Journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Johnny Winter and Edgar Winter. What a concert.
RFR Do you know if Johnny was resoected amongst the ither guitar players of his time? I can’t find that info anywhere and would appreciate any info you could give me and greetings from Illinois!
@@progqueen5952 Johnny Winter is a Grammy winning bluesman, he is the first non African-American to be indicted into the blues Hall of Fame. Many songs were written for him and then, later, were recorded by the people who wrote them.
Two of those people are Mick Jagger and Rick derringer.
My grandfather was albino. Had difficulty on bright sunny days but it did not prevent him from working his tail off outdoors. Just wore some really dark sunglasses and went to work. Great man.
I saw Johnny Winter in a TINY club in New York City (75 people at the most maybe?) for New Years Eve in the 70's or 80's. He had on a black top hat, a black cape, all black shirt & pants, a black cobra shaped walking cane-and it was ALL in black velvet-he looked absolutely incredible! The BEST SHOW I have ever seen in my 59 years!!!!

The black top hat was a beaver hide / fur one from the 1890s, or earlier, that I gave to him as a birthday present. When it was auctioned off, the 125+ year old leather carrying case was not included. no idea what happened to it....

This whole album is an over the top guitar frenzy. Track after track, Johnny Winter takes his guitar to the limit. As Wilburn says, "Winter murders this. It's a crime scene".

I saw Johnny Winter And in Boston in early 1970 with Rick Derringer as 2nd guitar with Johnny on this & other albums like Johnny Winter And Live. The And was Rick Derringer !
I saw the same line-up in the UK....one of the best live shows i've ever seen, and over the years i've seen them all.
@@savuti98 I agree with that being one of the best live bands that I have ever seen. Saw them twice, but the first time, on a farm festival, in front of about 30,000people was by far the superior show! I sold Johnny his first firebird, the mint sunburst '64 the afternoon before the show. He did not use it that night though. He started using it instead of the Fender XII strung w/6 strings very shortly after that gig....
I was blessed to be with the Winters in high school, I played bass and jammed with them and Janis Joplin. This was our vision of music. Am glade it’s now being found and appreciated. Those times were analogue.

I remember a much shorter "live" version at Pirates World, Dania Beach, 1971; I believe it was. I still have my Johnny Winter AND Live LP recorded at that concert. One of the best of my concert memories. This 10 min version was so fabulous!
Johnny Winter is underrated as only #64 out of the top 100 guitarists of all time. He deserves better. Check out a live version on “Be Careful With a Fool” & watch the master.

Far as I'm concerned he's the best should have been in top five at least. Those polls are done by popularity Johnny got next to no play on radio compared to the rest I might have heard him three times since 73 to good for commercial radio would hurt the industry and other artists. There's women ranked higher please.
You can't go by that he was lucky enough to even make it you had women rated better, that list more popular than best Johnny Winter is without a doubt better than any on that list. He's not commercial like the rest. He could do it all
The Johnny Winter "Captured Live" album is one of the best live LPs of the 1970's or any decade. Insane jamming by elite top notch musicians. Cream and the Allman Brothers were famous for being early jam bands, but Johnny Winter came on the scene shortly thereafter and earned his spot on the Mount Rushmore of jam bands.

Wow!!!! I was a 16 year old at that exact show. Recorded at the Oakland Coliseum. The show was Lynyrd Skynyrd, Johnny Winter, and Edgar Winter. Maybe the best concert I ever saw. You should play Sweet Papa John off that album. All 3 bands ended the day playing a 20 minute version of Frankenstein....like 8 guitar players..incredible.

One of my dad's aunts had a small record store in the front room of her house in Houston when I was a kid. She had old 78 rpm blues, or race records, as they used to be called & other hard to find records, even contemporary stuff. Johnny would come in looking for those old Mississippi blues guy's records that he loved so much. She told me he would hold the record's sleeve real close to his face trying to read the liner notes. He was legally blind & as far as I know he never wore glasses. I've been a fan since his first Columbia record in 69 I think it was when he got a pretty good deal of money for those days. Sure miss him, a true bluesman.
One of my favorite guitarists. He was amazing. Love his growly voice. There must be something in the water over in Texas; besides Johnny Winter coming from there, so did ZZ Top and SRV.

The guitar player in the background is Rick Derringer. I was fortunate enough to see this live in 1975 at Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, NJ.

February 3rd 1974, he was my first concert. Brownsville Station opened for him. I saw him several times over the years, him being a local guy he performed in Houston quite often.
I saw him with Brownsville Station in '74 at Chicago's International Amphitheater. I also saw him there in '73 with Foghat as the opener.

Saw him in the early 70s it's funny I waS just in high-school . It was the weekend and we went to concerts all the time. They were affordable. We saw the best of the best live and in person. It was a great time to grow up

Saw him in Cincinnati years ago, had he played my '34 National for a minute, wish i still had it, but, 3 kids education gets expensive lol. R.I.P. Johnny. Bladie May always one my favorites, he played it also on a National, what made me want one to begin with

Thanks for the reminder as to what a freekin' fantastic guitarist Johnny Winter was. Saw him at the Aragon Brawlroom in Chicago in '82 and again about a year before he died. in Atlanta. And what you heard here is pretty much what I heard for 2 hours at both shows.
You got your money's worth in notes when Johnny played. And how many were repeats? Johnny Well-O-Licks Winter. The dude was a monster!

U.S. Route 61 or U.S. Highway 61 (US 61) is a major United States highway that extends 1,400 miles (2,300 km) between New Orleans, Louisiana and the city of Wyoming, Minnesota. The highway generally follows the course of the Mississippi River and is designated the Great River Road for much of its route. As of 2004, the highway's northern terminus in Wyoming, Minnesota, is at an intersection with Interstate 35 (I-35). Johnny is my number one man and had the pleasure of seeing him four times. The last time I was 10 feet away from him in his later years after decades of a difficult life, an old man being led out onto a seat on stage, THEN he picked up that guitar and the man was back. My lasting memory was of him pulling out the Firebird and playing this song one last time. Check out Be Careful With a Fool from that same Swedish show as Edgar. His best work is with his idol Muddy Waters not shredding playing tastefully but still expertly backing up his hero. Also a tip of the hat to Floyd Radford for stepping in on Second Lead here. Sadly Richard Hughes the talented drummer on this took his own life not too long after this and the bass player Randy Jo Hobbs overdosed.
Don't know if they still are, but at one point Johnny and Edgar were in the Guinness Book for the only two albino children born to one mother.
I saw Johhny Winter with Wishbone Ash opening in 1970 (or 80).
Johnny Winter was the greatest slide guitar player ever, as anyone listening to this song will attest. In his prime he was one of the greatest guitar players around. It's unfortunate that all the press could write about was Page, Clapton, and Beck. JW's blues playing could blow them all away. Back in his prime, he had so much energy and it came through in his playing. Unfortunately, people today will never know. And youtube does not have any of his greatest playing. Even Hendrix was a JW fan. I would suggest that if anyone liked this song, then buy his Johnny Winter And live and this album Captured live. The first time I saw him play was back in the early 70's. SRV fans, you haven't a clue as to how much better JW back then than SRV ever was when it came to blues and slide. Also, the press hails Duane Allman as the greatest slide player. I would say they were the same. It is truly a shame he had so many drug problems and bad management that used him as a cash cow. The last time I saw him play was in a bar/night club6 months before his death. I was standing eight feet away from him. He was playing on automatic and you could see that he was a skeloton of what he once was. Really tragic. I admired his playing so much that it broke my heart to see him as I did. He could not walk without help and looked like he weighed 80 pounds.

I saw Johnny Winter live in 1975 with Rich Derringer and Johnny used to wear a leather hat kinda like a cowboy hat. Somebody through a firecracker or worse up on stage and it landed right in Johnny’s hat and he had no idea. Somebody from the stage ran out and grabbed the hat off his head and through it on the ground and stepped on it. Johnny just looked at him like what the hell are you doing? That was June 1975 at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, New Jersey. If you were there chime in.
Last time i saw Johnny he had to be lead on stage and sat down in a chair .....that boy was one of the best.
He was legally blind, albinism & it's price, years of living the life, on the road, woman, drugs, booze, sleazy management...life in the BLUES.

It's Johnny with Floyd Rayford on rhythm guitar, along with his band featuring Randy Jo Hobbs (who Jimi Hendrix dubbed "Randy Texas", when he and Randy Wolfe, later renamed Randy California, by Jimi played together before Jimi took off with Chas Chandler and went into orbit) and drummer Richard Hughes. I got in plenty of hot water with the neighbors by playing this album at "eleven!"

You mention musician brothers. I don't know, you've got the Winter's, the Allman's, the Van Halen's, even Eddie's son's great beyond his years. The Davies brothers, the Winwood's, probably many I can't think of. Just incredible musical genetics along with dedication.

My friend, Eric Kyle Heuschele (Good Guitarist already @14) was playing "Dazed and Confused" on his electric guitar (good--actually got to play W//Johnny at the Ramona "Main Stage"about 8 years ago) He had "First Winter"..I was reading the liner. he put Led Zeppelin on...."I can't Quit You Babe"...little more than halfway through, takes it off..and asks, "1st Winter, it has some good ones..wanna listen to some cuts? .Played 3 songs off it..."Hey I got the new Johnny album, the other day, at Tower--"2nd Winter" it has three sides and he rocks out a lot more on it" --"Highway 61 Revisited" I already really like Bob Dylan's..one of his best! But Johnny's smokin' slide guitar..truly blew me away!! "Blues Breakers" Michael Bloomfield..Paul Butterfield ..Derek and the Dominoes were some of the things we listened to---But DAMN --"Play it again!" --played it 3 times, at least--Shreddin' Blues Guitar! Hooked ever SINCE!
Bob Dylan has been documented to say "I may have wrote it, Highway 61 belongs to Johnny Winter".
Floyd radford is the other guitarist in the solo break. You can tell by the tone and non slide.
One of my top 3 rock/blues guitarist ever. He has a double sided album that only has recordings on 3 of the sides and this album is one of the best ever. Starts out with the classic “serves my right to suffer , serves me right to be alone” his playin on that tune is worth the album itself. J Winter is a king’s King

Hey love your look at the blues
I was lucky enough to see Johnny live while on this tour at the acoustically-perfect, theater-intimate McFarland Auditorium on the campus of SMU in Dallas. It was a magnificent show that I consider one of the very best I've seen (& I've seen dozens since). When the drummer was putting down that shuffle beat he was the only instrument heard in the whole place. Then Johnny pulled up a barstool & sat down on it, crossed his legs & played slide for about 20 minutes. He did it better than this recording even with new melodies, refrains, turnarounds, & a climax that had even the people at the very back of the facility jumping up & down on the movie-theatre seats. I gained an appreciation of awesome live music that night that has stuck with me since.
In the early 70s I’d go days without listening to anyone BUT Johnny. Of course I listened to Beatles Doors everything else but Johnny was always special to me. He well? f-ing rocked it.
