Still I don’t really find the appeal of making a meh game into something that probably can’t go beyond being turned into something decent. Along with adding, expanding, and changing the gameplay. But it’s more or less still the same game, just polished. I guess some edits in NPC, locations, enemies, dialogue, still. At the end I still consider Impossible Lair as prob the stronger game. Still seems the same game just better. Essentially at best a 6/10 gets bumped to a 6.5/10. While Impossible Lair is like a solid 8.5. I’d rather they maybe take what they learned from both, and make a great third game. Maybe change the npc’s and atmosphere a bit. That living Fridge NPC is just unnerving for one in both games.
I’d argue it’s a waste of money and time that can end up costing them severely if it doesn’t sell well. I’d rather they use the resources they have for a 3rd game that would have a fresh shot.
Glad to see how well this is shaping up! I am excited to go back and play this game in an improved state. I got near the end of the original but lost interest, partly due to the emptiness I was feeling from the levels. It's very encouraging to see them mixing them up now and adding new collectables and challenges.

I’m definitely getting this. I hope that the levels are a bit smaller when Tooka is eventually made, because they were often way too big in the original. This is actually true for Banjo-Tooie as well, but that game made up for it by having tons of content whereas Yooka felt empty. I also hope that they will make the moveset more interesting in Tooka.
Yooka-Laylee was legit my first PlayStation Platinum trophy, and I played it at release and did encounter the glitch in Capital Cashino that locked you out of a Pagie. I was streaming it, and stopped the stream there, and spent the rest of the night and the next day before my stream (with sleep of course) playing the entire game again up until that point. And it was a blast. I usually hate redoing things like that but I had so much fun. Suffice it to say I'm hyped as hell for Replaylee and I'll definitely be platting this one too. Game's good.
I'll absolutely take a re-tooled and refined version of this game. I enjoyed the first one well enough but eventually gave up on the final boss fight. Reworked flight controls and reduced power usage already fix two of the big problems with that final fight so I'm optimistic.
@ArcadeStunfisk definitely. I actually preferred the movement over mario odyssey. There was about mario, maybe the camera being too close to mario, that made the platforming nowhere near as intuitive as it could have been
So, I WAS replaying the original a couple months ago -- and enjoying it. Then this remake got announced and I had to stop haha! I want to go into this remake without remembering much from the original. Can't wait for this remake to release! One thing I'm really glad to see is more collectables! Hopefully there will be a lot of these hidden all over the level. I always found it disappointing that the levels all seemed to be built in a way that you could explore every nook and cranny, as long as you had the will to do so, but you were rarely ever rewarded with a collectable. Once you found the super-secret Pirate's Skull, that was it -- no longer a point to hunt for super-secret spots. I hope that's fixed in this game
looks promising. My biggest issues were rolling cost power (and the whole power system in general), flying being so unwieldy and hard to control, and swimming having similar issues to flying. And once you had explored most of the level it was near impossible to find what you were missing. Looks like they addressed some of my issues. Rolling costs power being a big one. A map is huge addition too.
Okay, I'm sold. I wasn't really interested when I saw the trailer cause I didn't really enjoy the original, but after watching this, I'm more excited for it.
The original sorta felt incomplete to me, I think that if they took more time itd be a great game. So far this remaster looks incredible, Ive been craving a new 3D platformer.
As someone who 100%-ed both the original Yooka Laylee and it's sequel, I'm excited for the opportunity to do it all over again with Replayee! All the small adjustments and improvements they're making here look awesome. I'm especially a fan of the little victory dance that Ant highlights: it's charming as heck! 🙂
I played about half of Yooka Laylee earlier this year and after seeing what you've shown here, it looks like Replaylee is shaping up quite nicely. I really like what they've done with the visuals. It may not look too different if you haven't looked at the original in awhile, but there definitely is a fine coat of polish over everything that makes the world appear more real - lighting is much better, didn't see any 2D models like for the quills, and I agree, the added charm is definitely a plus. Since Kartos wasn't available, I'm taking that as a sign they are reworking the entire minecart mini game which was DESPERATELY needed as that whole thing controlled so unintuitively most players probably thought it was completely broken. The map looks like a huge game changer as well. This may not win over people who had a lot of fundamental issues with the design, but for new players it looks like it will be an easy recommendation.
I dont remember if I ever finished the original, but I had so much fun with it and with Impossible Lair, really underrated games, will definitely give it a proper go this time around
Only thing that stuck out to me here was when activating the silver coin challenges, there's a delay before you can collect the first coin seemingly, which seems like it does hurt the flow since you have to double back and lose time. Hopefully something they fix
This stuff is *exactly* what I was hoping for in this version. Everything that frustrated me in the original sounds like it'll be resolved. Cannot fucking wait.
I just bought it today on Switch and instantly fell in love. I’d heard about the upgrade and wanted to know more, then…just a matter of hours ago you posted this. Outstanding. 💪
This looks amazing! I backed the original way back on kickstarter but haven't gotten around to playing it yet, which is kind of a good thing I guess with a better version releasing. Looking forward to it!
Imma put my money on the fact that quid will be used for some sort of cosmetics or costumes. I can just imagine a space pirate costume from the cosmic ocean, or a transparent ghost costume from the swamps.
I’m genuinely impressed with how seriously Playtonic is taking all of the criticisms they received with the initial release. This remake is looking incredible! I can tell many are still skeptical, but I’m confident that it’s going to blow the original out of the water, which I already thought was a decent game to begin with.
As someone who skipped the original release because of the lukewarm reception, I'm genuinely excited to play this updated version and for it to be my first experience with Yooka-Laylee.
My only complaint from what we’ve seen so far is the new dialogue boxes… I know they look fine and good, but I prefer the Banjo style text boxes we got in the first game, especially considering that’s literally what the main inspiration for this game was. I don’t think they should be embarrassed to embrace it even though it stands on its own!
I wasn't too interested in this, but fast travel, map, and rolling not using up energy are actually great changes to the game and make me consider getting it.
Man... I just wish they went the extra mile and gave these characters something to do besides existing. Like, I don't feel they are characters at all, these guys to me are just npcs. This is the snowy area right? Well, make them shiver or have them wearing a scarf. In the casino? Make them count bills or something. Small stuff like that would ground them to the place they are visiting
I finally 100%'ed the game today and thought to myself (Yup... Never again) Not because its a bad game but because of how hard and how much time it took... But after SEEING the remastered... I'd replay the whole game, AND 100% it if it came out today
I love the original Yooka despite its flaws. It’s so cool that this isn’t just a fresh coat of paint but is also fixing a lot of people’s gripes with the original.
@@SilentGinja at the end of the day, I haven't played this remaster yet. But I liked the dark blue tone and overall the atmosphere of this world much better. Also I don't like the removal of the double jump. You could manage your jumps very well using that. Flying was great. You had a great view while flying. Now it looks dull and stupid. The view is gone etc. also, there are TOO many collectibles. It's taking away the exploration, banjo Tooie vibe, formula etc.
I didn’t even know about this! I’m so excited cause I wanted so bad to play the first but all the “let down” reviews made me skip it. And I love platformers more than anything. This SAYS ALOT about the developers wow! So impressive
There were such good bones underlying this game. It just felt like it needed a bit more time in the oven. The later levels in particular didn't feel as amazing as the first few stages, but they had such potential. I'm really glad they're going back to rework the game.
If there is one thing I hope that will be in the final game, is more enemies. If memory serves correctly, the original game had like a total of 7 types of enemies.
I think some of the newly redesigned levels seem a bit blindingly bright (both the snowy level and just all that volumetric fog in the forest one), plus that new water doesn't seem to have proper reflections so instead of kind of looks a bit disconnected since the cubemaps don't really reflect the environment. Those are fixable though, so I hope they're able to iron out the few remaining quibbles.
This definitely has my interest especially since I’ve beaten the original several times. While the infinite roll would certainly improve general traversal, I’m wondering how they’ll change the racing challenges cause the stamina meter was the only real test with those.
I only JUST played Yooka-Laylee for the first time back in February, and a few months after I did they announced this Remaster! I didn't hate the game, but it also wasn't my favorite 3D platformer either. I played Banjo-Kazooie & Tooie for the first time a few years ago and I could definitely feel all the influence, but it also didn't quite hit the mark in a few ways. I don't regret playing the original, because now I get to appreciate all the changes made to the game that much more! I'm excited to hear about all the level changes and the addition of a new map, fast travel, new level designs etc. This is looking to be a fantastic improvement, except I don't like the new text boxes. I hope they go back to the old ones.
Impossible lair is one of my favorite platformers in general so I had high hopes for them in the future. I was always interested in the first game, but heard too many mixed things about it, but the remake I can already tell will be a good if not great return to form for the genre.
This looks much better than the original version, mainly because of the map layout and because it doesn't feel so empty anymore. The redesign of the bees is also good, not just visually but because they are now easier to kill. But I'm confused. I heard from content creators they were not supposed to show the map, did you get a permission to do so?
I love the original Yooka-Laylee so much. Yooka and Laylee have become my favorite duo as a result of their two awesome games. While I had hoped Playtonic would be hard at work on the next Yooka-Laylee game, I will be more than happy to pick this up whenever it releases... possibly on the next Nintendo system.
I was a Kickstart backer for the original game. I mainly backed it because there was a 3D platformer drought at the time. I did enjoy it but it had it's flaws. My biggest complaint was the areas were pretty big and empty and getting around it could take a while to get from point A to B. The hub world was a chore to get around as I would get lost looking for the next level. The developers did add signposts in a later update but I had finished the game by then. The inclusion of a map and warp points are a definite welcome and the roll move no longer needing the power bar.
I love the changes innanimation, controls, and content. Theonly thing I don't live is the new oagie animation, because back in yooka laylee it didn't freeze the game and the jingle was beautiful
Had no idea this is a remake of the original. Having never played the original I’ll definitely have to pick this up. Glad playtonic took the genuine criticisms that people had and want to iron them out
I'm so glad they're adding a map and warps. I've been saying since it launched that they needed some sort of system for fast traveling to different sections of each world. Didn't make sense to me that they made the worlds even bigger than Tooie which they felt like they needed warp pads for, but they didn't put any warp pads in it. Drove me crazy. I also like that there are now impact effects in it. Something about killing enemies was never satisfying. In Banjo they made it satisfying by giving them good animations for knocking them out and it flowed good. Yooka didn't really have anything. So those impact effects make it feel a lot better just visually. I really didn't like the OG all that much because I had my brain set on Banjo-Kazooie quality and it wasn't that. This time around they've improved the quality and I'm keeping my expectations in check so hopefully I'll enjoy it more. I am a little upset they removed the Banjo-Kazooie style speech bubbles though.
My biggest issues with Yooka Laylee were poor conveyance of what to do, horrible object placement (especially) the feathers, and traversal was a pain. To expound on my third issue. The talon trot equivalent had an energy gauge which was baffling and frustrating like who thought that was a good idea. And the worlds were huge but there were no warp pads like in banjo tooie. It made me quit because I didn't know what to do and getting around to find out was an absolute pain. The transformations are a perfect example of this. To give a specific example the flower transformation in world 1. Going around as the flower was incredibly slow and tedious, trying to find where to use it was a pain, and even if you knew exactly where to go it took forever, and due to lack of warp pads going all the way back to transform to normal was a pain too. All of these issues are relatively easy to fix with a remake, and I hope they do. Edit: LMFAO I probably should have watched more than 2 minutes of the video before commenting.
My thoughts as well. I don't think it can fix the world's being too large problem, but it looks like they are changing and adding a lot. I'm looking forward to seeing more. Hope they fix the mini games/minecart sections as those were overly difficult. I feel like I have a list of a hundred things I'd like to see changed/be done better. 😅
Keep in mind, way back in the day Rare (specifically the devs there that left to start Playtonic) were working on a Banjo-Kazooie that would start out as a remake of the original (and that's all it would be advertised as) but slowly and subtly change into a sequel (the characters would start to become self aware of the fact they were in a time loop and the story would go off the rails from there). That remake was cancelled and reworked into Nuts & Bolts. All I'm saying is, Yooka-Replaylee might end up being the spiritual successor to Banjo X (minus the being reworked into a mediocre car game part of course)
Never played this game but I can see a lot of quality 3D plat inspiration in it. Banjo ofc, but I see a lot of Mario Galaxy in there, and some Jak&Daxtar too. I like that I can visually see the smart game design from just a compilation of clips
I remember 100%ing the original game somewhat begrudgingly given how bad the mine cart levels and arcade levels were, but man this looks like such an upgrade so far so I’m hoping those levels get big improvements too, I look forward to playing this.
Looks like another " I bought the game before getting the console" sort of buy. I'm glad Yooka-Laylee is getting so much love and attention. Banjo-Kazooie was an all-time fav for me, but I hesitated on the original because of reviews. Now, my body is more than ready! ... All That said, Playtonic PLS find that stride of yours and take another shot at Jet Force and Perfect Dark! We know you've got it in you!!
Map function? With the ability to track the pages and see where they are? HALLELUJAH! Getting lost was the reason I stopped playing the original! The controls were okay, I liked the style, but I had zero idea of where to go or what to do next!
Great video! So excited for the remake! My only gripe is the lag when you hit enemies/objects or use abilities like ground pound. Did you notice this while playing?
I'm happy to try it again. I liked it but stopped somewhere in the middle because the expanded worlds where annoying to navigate through without map or guide. I still think some of the characters and transformations fell short in comparison to the charm of Banjo Kazooie, but I still think it was a good platformer. Could be really good now.
My issue with the "fans" hating on Yooka Laylee is this Fans: We want you to make a 3d platformer just like banjo and kazooie, kinks and all! Playtonic: You got it. Fans: omg why does this control a n64 3d platformer? Platonic: That is literally what you asked for. Fans: I HATE IT *eye roll* They made a modern BK literally kinks and all. It was great for what they made. Same charm, same language, same game play. Heres hoping they have a "upgrade" option on ps5 and ill probably pick it up.
I did play the original Yooka-Laylee on my Switch But I didn’t get to finish it But hopefully I’ll be able to play and finish this one remake on the Switch 2 though!
For me my issues were not feeling like there was enough precision in the walking controls, and I'll really only know if it feels right if they give a public demo, so I really hope they do
I feel like the reason a lot of casuals and critics didn’t like the original game is because it wasn’t made for them, it was made for 3d plat former enjoyers & when you try to please the casual market too much you can easy change too much in a remaster/remake but it looks like they didn’t make that mistake here, I’m excited to play this since I never picked up the original!

I was considered replaying the game as I haven’t touched it in years, but it seems I’ll be waiting for the same reason you are.
looks promising.
I hope this sells well, even if i’m not hugely interested after beating the original late last year, i wanna see more of this duo in new adventures
I noticed the exact same thing, really hinders the flow having to double back because of the delay.
Looking forward to it!
they’re offering a discount if you already own the game
@@protocetid Yeah, I saw that on the steam FAQ; no mention of how much yet though.
I am very happy they are remaking it! I never got the original, and this will give me the perfect reason to finally get it
Imma put my money on the fact that quid will be used for some sort of cosmetics or costumes. I can just imagine a space pirate costume from the cosmic ocean, or a transparent ghost costume from the swamps.
They added a map, fast travel, and made the rolling move not use power.
THANK YOU!!!
This game is going to be actually GOOD this time!
I’m genuinely impressed with how seriously Playtonic is taking all of the criticisms they received with the initial release. This remake is looking incredible! I can tell many are still skeptical, but I’m confident that it’s going to blow the original out of the water, which I already thought was a decent game to begin with.
Dude, Twooka-Laylee is such a clever name. Can't wait for Yooka-LayThree also
Let's be real. The third game is gonna be called "Yooka-Laylee: Screws and Sprockets."
As someone who skipped the original release because of the lukewarm reception, I'm genuinely excited to play this updated version and for it to be my first experience with Yooka-Laylee.
Im pretty excited for this game.
I played the original but never finished it. The charm was great and it was what i love in my 3d mascot platformers.
The thing I'm most excited about is the map. This is a rare non-Nintendo day one buy for me.
the rolling move not consuming any power is the biggest game changer for this game!!!!
What?! I had no idea this was even happening! I'm very happy about this...and "replaylee" 😂 love it!!
Actually, do that with Yooka and Laylee themselves as well. They are going to snowy world, so give them an anorak!! That would look so cute on them!
A video by Hivory Hub showed that they do have a new shivering idle animation.
@@DakotaSagePika Yaaaay!
But at the same time it's also ruining lots of things for people who loved the original Yooka Laylee game like myself.
@@enesog for example?
@@SilentGinja visuals of this world. Gameplay changes etc.
@@enesog Strange to say that improvements over the original graphics and game play are ruining the game, but ok
I can't wait! Loved the original version and this looks even better!!!
I’ve just started playing the Nintendo Switch version and i am having so much fun i think its a game done well 🙏🏽
If there is one thing I hope that will be in the final game, is more enemies. If memory serves correctly, the original game had like a total of 7 types of enemies.
impossible lair had the same issue. it was just the same enemies over and over.
They are treating this game/franchise with the love and care they would have given Banjo and Kazooie.
I dunno if I will buy the remake, but I will say this. This makes me more exicted for a possible sequel
This definitely has my interest especially since I’ve beaten the original several times. While the infinite roll would certainly improve general traversal, I’m wondering how they’ll change the racing challenges cause the stamina meter was the only real test with those.
Make it so you can only roll in a straight line, and you have to stop with a small cooldown before you can turn and use it again, would be my guess.
The ultimate Redemption arc!
Glad playtonic took the genuine criticisms that people had and want to iron them out
The soundtrack it's slighlty ,,crisper", because they rearanged the entire Soundtrack. 🙃
Mark the bookmark who lets you fast travel is genius
I really liked the original too, everyone told me I didn't know what I was talking about. But I think there's a lot of nostalgia for Banjo Kazooie.
Looking forward to playing this on my Nintendo 👀
Definitely getting this for switch 2
As a fan of Banjo-Kazooie, I loved the original Yooka-Laylee and looking forward to replaying it again once released on the new Nintendo console.
I fell in love with the original yooka laylee and 100% the game. I will be paying full price and I WILL BE 100% THE GAME AGAIN
The first one's shortcomings made me give up on it, but IMPOSSIBLE LAIR was so delicious I have my hopes up for this one. I'm eager to play it.
I hope this remake does the original game justice.
@kylebarclay9352 I don't know about the world being too large problem. Can't be any worst than Banjo-Tooie.
The map is a godsent. The reason I eventually dropped the game is because I just got so completely lost in Capital B.'s lair xD
I never got to play the original, so I'm excited for this.
Oh wow, I have impossible lair in my steam library. Neat! Guess I’m playing that tomorrow lol
Looking forward to the remaster for the map alone 😂
5:24 oh damn they made completely (kinda) new areas
Definitely grabbing this at launch!
Excuse me...they added a map and fast travel?
Okay, definitely picking this up when it launches. Sad the double jump is gone but I guess I'll get used to it.
I have both yooka-laylee games on the switch and this finally gives me a good enough excuse to go buy it a 2nd time for the pc :))
I do recall the Minecart boss with I.N.E.P.T in the Casino rather frustrating so I'm wondering if that's gonna be fixed.
Map function?
With the ability to track the pages and see where they are?
HALLELUJAH! Getting lost was the reason I stopped playing the original! The controls were okay, I liked the style, but I had zero idea of where to go or what to do next!
I liked the chat portraits moving in the old one though, but otherwise this looks better
I love Yooka Laylee, its closest to what we have to what could've been Banjo Threeie
So hyped for this!
Could be really good now.
just seeing Vendi's new model. holy crap she looks a lot better.
I want this game to be good.
Ooooo I'm excited for this
My issue with the "fans" hating on Yooka Laylee is this
Fans: We want you to make a 3d platformer just like banjo and kazooie, kinks and all!
Playtonic: You got it.
Fans: omg why does this control a n64 3d platformer?
Platonic: That is literally what you asked for.
Fans: I HATE IT
*eye roll*
They made a modern BK literally kinks and all.
The trailer on Twitter’s subtitles said something about it being a derivative work of The Touhou Project, wonder where that comes into play
