    so lovely! people used to make so many things on their own, it's amazing. DIY was life! It's so valuable to pass on and preserve these skills.

    Beautiful rugs! I've never heard of or seen these before. So glad to hear a niece wants to learn and carry on the tradition..too many home arts have been lost in time.

    It is a a truly beautiful creation. I hope there are always people to keep the craft alive, especially since it is so eco-friendly too!

    This is 10 years old. I wonder if she has passed this wonderful art to someone else. I wonder if she and her husband are still alive as they seem to be fairly old in this video. What absolutely beautiful creations. It would be ashame if this art was lost.

    At craft shows around here there were people doing wagon wheel rugs. They had the wheel connected to a piece of wood and a stand. It spun around when needed. Always wanted to do it.

    I make 8 spoke wagon wheel rugs. My mother taught me and her mother taught her. My grandmother used to make them to sell at her garage sales for 4 dollars a piece just to make a little extra money.

    • @SpiritBear12
      @SpiritBear12 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only 4 dollars a piece? Oh that poor woman was under cutting herself. They would be worth so much more than that. So much work, time and materials that goes into making any hand made rug, all of that effort is worth far more than 4 dollars a piece.
      I think it's nice you have carried on the tradition. I have never seen a wagon wheel rug until now.

      I know depending on how particular I get my rugs can take up the 40 Hours to complete and can take up to 100 yards of fabric depending on the tightness of the weave. I can hardly imagine selling them for so little. So much effort for so little a reward. Though I do find it very meditative so maybe for her it was less financial and more personal.

    I saw Francoise Ouimet's work at Old Songs about 28 years ago. I was smitten and went home and wrote down all of the instruction she talked about. I still have those instructions and still dream of finding my wagon wheel to nail in and create a rug! Gosh...what on earth am I waiting for? I have ebay now to find a wagon wheel!

    Thank you for sharing this video and allowing us to learn from you. Is there a video from start to finish or how to do the patterning? I would love to teach this lost art this fall at our retreat. How do I get more info from you?

    I would simply love to learn to do this. I love the pattern and colors you have used. Would you consider making an instructional video to help others learn this art and pass it on. There are so many arts have been lost that it is a shame. My grandmother taught me a lot and I am passing it on to my sons. Thank you so much.

    I love this rug making technique.. I wonder if you can make this with plarn (plastic yarn) would be great for the homeless to have. I think to might be easier to do then crocheting the plarn which I am doing now

    • @SpiritBear12
      @SpiritBear12 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      How do you prepare your plarn? Do you spin one or maybe two plies together? Or do you just cut it out in long strips and crochet it like that?

    • @christieallen3916
      @christieallen3916 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SpiritBear12 I cut it into loops and knot them together

    • @SpiritBear12
      @SpiritBear12 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Christie Allen
      But you're not spinning the plarn to make a twisted yarn? Are you crocheting it as it is in flat ribbons?

    Why don't you have your husband put the wagon wheel on a stand that will enable the wheel to tilt until you get to the edge then tilt it back down? Might be a lot easier on the back.

      Not good for the shape of the rug as gravity will shift the centerpoint.
