Hi and thanks for commenting. I believe its the Rode Blimp Mk1 which I think has been replaced by the Mk2 now... though you could try the second hand market. I'm not sure if the dual mic clip came with it or not... I actually borrowed it for the test so I don't have full details but hope that helps!

Its impressive how quiet both of the recordings are even with cheaper mics! Hats off. Would you mind sharing the key to that? Every other video I find, the self noise is deafening.
Thank you. With the Clippy's I think recording to the Sony M10 really helps as it has very low self noise. The Sennheisers are good quality mics going to the tascam DR70. Keeping the gain low helps too!
Nice setup with the Sennheisers there. Normally when you see Mid/Side setups here on TH-cam it is rather clunky and not portable. (I have the Shure MV88+, Mid/Side into iPhone.) And I didn’t know about the Clippys. Good short concise video.
The MKH30 is quieter than the MKH 60, which has a hotter output. You need to boost the MKH30 by about 4db before decoding, which will also cause the stereo image to be wider (in a good way).
You just need to assure the levels are as wanted and I would do that during recording time already of course. That is one reason why I strongly favour mic pres with a digital control (RME Babyface in my case). Then you know what you are doing and have much better control -- especially for stereo recordings. Very nice comparison btw! Thanks for sharing. :-) Maybe some ORTF-like setup would also be a good option, bit better mono-compatibility, but still a fair amount of time-differences.
As an owner of a stereo pair of EM-272 Clippys myself I still have to admit that the Sennheisers did have a smoother, more balanced tonality, whereas the EM 272s were a bit harsher. However as far as imaging and 3-D immersiveness goes, I did think the Clippy pair had the edge with the M-S pair sounding a bit less open. Of course, the comparison becomes even more interesting when you consider the 20x price and portability differences.
AB Stereo gives me a better feeling when listening. feels more natural. i also have the clippys and would like to upgrade to sennheiser omnis at some point. i was also very enthusiastic about the audio technica 4022... the sound was great... unfortunately very sensitive to moisture / temperature fluctuations...didnt works here in Germany with cold and humid clima.

So with MS mic technique you duplicate the fig8 mic track then flip polarity, then pan them pretty wide L/R; leave mid cardioid mic panned center.. jjust curious if that is what decoding means or,
Congrats, very nice and detailed recordings, I have also a pair of clippy´s, with XLR output into a SD mixpre6, perfect combo, wide stereo, in contrast to the senn's MS combo (you could use a cardioid instead of small shotgun/hyper, like the mkh40 for a bit wider stereo control) , maybe less harsh/bright sound but a narrow stereo image, I do prefer spaced omnis for nature recording, it gives you much more a sense of the place.
As much as I would like to prefere the super cardioid/figure 8 mid/side, it's kind of unnatural sounding compared to the spaced omni's. I haven't tried my self but maybe when something needs to be honed in and with slightly less sides, it's more preferable. Thanks for sharing!
I’ve a binaural 3D kit, I’ve a pair of Primo EM272’s that also as an option go with the kit. But the basic ones that come with it are not bad. Would you like to try it out as you are also in the UK?
Great results! I found myself looking at large-diaphragm cardioid microphones like the RODE NT1-A , which seem to have very high sensitivity and very low self-noise 5dBA , so they should be really good at picking up the fine remote details. Yet I don't really see anyone using the large diaphragm mics for nature recordings. Do you know why?
I use pair of Rode NT1 for nature recording. I can suggest why not many people use large diaphragm - main downside is the weight and bulkiness, also there is not many windshield options - i had to make one myself. The sound is awesome, but usability is sometimes frustrating.
I use two Rode NT 1. Both 17 cm with their condensors apart in Orft. Listening with headphones i can pick out the birds flying over and passing. Its on a Tascam Dr100mkiii. In noisy environment i switch over to the EM 272 clippy's but the two studio mics rule!
Interesting. Where I live it's very noisy, even in nature, due to the large population. So I have to use shotgun mikes for everything. It's a bit annoying, but you do what you have to do.
First video I found of sound producer who knows how to properly control gain of Clippy mics, these are highly sensitive and some turn them way hot with shitty interfaces.

Nice. I have the LOM Usi's but never tried them out in nature. Must do that, they're super sensitive. Same capsule as the Clippy I think.

Yes, that's one way of decoding. I often use the free MS decoder by Voxengo called MSED - www.voxengo.com/product/msed/

P48 refers to the fact that the mic uses phantom power i.e. 48volts
same mic. there's only 1 version of the MKH 30.

The Clippys sound way better, and cost just a fraction of what the Sennheisers do.
