Growing up in East Cleveland gave me the tools to be who I am today. Heartbreaking seeing this. I remember when we started noticing this change happening in the 90's. It was still livable then. Now, this is crazy.
It is a crying shame to view this. I immigrated directly to Cleveland from the UK decades ago. Cleveland gave me a major break concerning my engineering career so I am eternally grateful for that. Greetings from Arizona.
I actually new a an older woman (great person who recently passed away) but her family came from UK and settled in Northern Ohio outside of Sandusky. I know this isn’t very relevant to your comment but after reading yours it did spark my memory of her telling me that.
I used to work in East Cleveland, and it's every bit as bad as the video points out. It's also very dangerous. You don't want to be walking down St Clair or Superior at night.
It’s not just East Cleveland, it’s Cleveland period. I go for periodic visits back home and it’s sad to see the area in which I’ve grown up gone! All of the houses that I lived in are gone from 125th in St. Clair, Continental Ave and 114th and Buckeye. The streets are horrendous. It’s just sad
I'm a trucker, and I've seen this all over the US, All Races and it's gonna get worse, more automation is coming and it's gonna take millions of jobs including mine, I hope make the cut by retirement
You mean another HOOD.. All the same every single example. I am done helping clean that shit up. Sorry to say but it is true. Enough federal funding to fix shit so it can be tore up again so it can be invested in AGAIN.
Why didn't you happen to mention all of the nations poorest communities which ALL happen to be predominately white communities. www.thestreet.com/slideshow/12818489/1/poorest-counties-us.html
I'm from St Louis and went to Cleveland for a concert around Christmas. Ended up in East Cleveland and it made St Louis hoods look nice. It's so sad to see.
@ If it was republican it would be the same! They don't care about us or our communities never have or will. So why should we vote period! Our voices or votes don't matter. Ok so we vote Republican then what??? Nothing changes... Look yall got a republican in office now. He not helping ppl beneath him he kicking them more hard than their already down. Prime example the "wall" he's only building the wall because he has a disgust with Mexicans. So what is different for the black community! They might wipe us out, If they're doing the Mexicans like that imagine what they will do to blacks🤔 if your an smart black person you wouldn't even vote leave that non sense to them and let them keep destroying the country that they fought the natives for😊
You're not telling people to accept responsibility or are you, cuz you know big brother has all your needs met. Just bow down and surrender and you will never have to think for yourself again.
@@icelyn1 he doesn't have a disgust for Mexicans. He is against illegal immigration, which in the end only makes sure that legitimate u.s. citizens have to fight the invading horde for jobs. Also, we have enough domestic crime in the United States. It's harder to bring Justice to people who are not legitimate citizens that are in the "system". People complain about crappy jobs, but life is about evolution. A series of stepping Stones, increasing one's own value and skill.
You know you're bad when Cleveland itself rejects annexing you. Seriously, I drive through East Cleveland 6 days a week from I-90 to Euclid straight down Eddy Rd. I have known this area for 40 years. I can tell you, it's not only the elected leaders that are constantly being locked up, but it's the people themselves the cause of E. Cleveland struggles. Here's the Ironic thing. East Cleveland has a median household income of only $26,000, and the suburb that borders north of East Cleveland, Bratenhal has a median household income of $107,000. The poorest city in Ohio borders one of the riches cities. And yes, Brantenhal Police is on 24hr duty along the borders and will follow you if your car is less pleasing to the eye.
My family immigrated to America back in the late 50's and lived in East Cleveland for about 10 years. It was absolutely beautiful! Then the neighborhood started to change and we moved to the suburbs. Sad very sad.
When I lived there, a friend at Park Tower noticed her car had been stolen one night. She called the police to file a report. The cop told her that she had to go to the station, he was the only cop on duty on a Saturday night (22,000 residents at the time), and he couldn’t leave the station because there were people in the jail. The thing is, even then, around 2005 or so, it was still way better than now. It brings tears to my eyes to see little old people walking to the dollar general or those huge old houses in ruins.
I went to Cleveland about five years ago to visit tomb of President James Garfield, while asking direction from a police officer, I was advised not to drive through East Cleveland. Thanks officer, good advice.
Lived here and moved out in the late 70's as a kid, now I am nearly 50 years old. I was born at Forrest hills hospital and delivered by Dr. Wallace! Moved down south (Tennessee), but came back periodically to visit my family in Cleveland heights between late 70's and early 90's. Although it had started to decline before I moved, but each time I would stop by EC between late 70's and early 90's it got progressively worse. It was truly heartbreaking. A couple of years ago, I took my son, who has never travelled outside of the suburbs in the south to EC, and wanted to show him the old house on Galewood, and we didn't make it off of Euclid, he was gripped with fear. He thought we were in Detroit. He has seen poverty here in the south, and unfortunately homelessness, but seeing whole blocks of homes boarded up, uncut grass, overgrown trees and brush, and the level of trash and the potholes were like nothing he had ever experienced. Sadly, I has such great memories as a kid here, it was truly heartbreaking!
phil minnie I'm 40 years old lived in Oakwood in the 80's and moved away in the late 90's And I can remember my Grandmother and Mother and Aunts talking about going to DR Wallace back in the day.
My son was born in 1973 at Forest City hospital, by Do Wallace. I have no idea where that hospital was. I couldn't find it today if you have me a million dollars.
I once rented some cheap rooms out. A friend brought around some poor types he met in the bars to rent the rooms. I was in the habit of cleaning things up, but I got no help from them. The rent was cheap. It didn't include hotel service. The trash got to collecting in the kitchen. I thought I would try a little experiment. Let the trash pile up and see how long it takes before someone gets tired of it and takes it out. When the trash got 4 feet deep, covered most of the floor, and dozens of mice were breeding in it, I ended the experiment. My conclusion was if you don't take out the trash you are the trash. So I took them out, too.
P.S. In case you was wondering, honey they was all white folks. Have a little self respect and take care of yourself. You'll feel better. Even very poor people can keep their quarters and persons clean. Cleanliness is next to Godliness. Thoreau used to clean up the local trails, but he went unpaid for it. Every day I see a trail of trash strewed along my fence. As I walk around, I pick up trash in my path and put it where it belongs. I don't tolerate entropic confusion in my path. A lot of my trade is cleaning and ordering. I collect things that may have and ounce of use left in them. I have a suggestion. Look carefully at the materials around you. What are they made of? Can they be milled for use? Old bricks sell at a premium if you find the right buyer. My guess is those EC houses were visited by scrappers within hours of vacancy. That should not be tolerated, but that's the breaks. When they are through it takes $20gs to bring a house up to code. Considering the state of EC the taxes by now are 3 times normal and revenues are falling. Wake up and smell the coffee. You attract more bees with honey than with vinegar. Here's an assignment for you. Read Aesop's Fables. Ask the Quakers about their proverbs. Read the ones in the Bible. When I hunted for proverbs, I found out some interesting things. Largely they are the same everywhere. Dozens of cultures and languages, and they all say the same things. That is wisdom. EC needs a good dose of proverbs, more than I can list here. Pennies add up to dollars. Good luck and God bless.
Zorro Alphonso for real its some ppl mindset set like that and the ones who have expensive cars that's the cycle there in. Alotta intercity ppl gotta get education and learn about investing in the community I'm in the hood to wanna give back to it I'm in east side Atlanta it's rough out here but there's programs what do the best they can and in Cleveland its crocked politicians that don't keep promises but ppl in the hood who get rich gotta do the best they can to keep the community running
@@gabrielsasala1875 Pitsburg is ranked 57 in america, 7 beats 57 🤘. Ive been in Pitsburg and it doesnt compare to Huntsville...more hillbillies there than in Alabama for sure😂😂
So when will these people accept responsibility and say just maybe it's our fault. Just maybe we should get a job, take care of our own properties, pay rent on time, stop doing drugs, stop allowing criminals to rule the neighborhood, stop doing what you have been doing for the past 50 years. Obviously it is not working.
Bobby Smith :its about culture. Germany and Japan were bombed to rubble during WW2...their cultures were productive, so they cleaned up, they take action and build, produce...they never gave up. They had discipline. No excuses. They were in a much worse situation than East Cleveland is in. They were starving. These citizens of East Cleveland are obviously not starving.
I was travelling through Ohio, tank was just under a 1/4 pulled off into Cleveland took one glance, and got right back on the highway. I left the hood a long time ago and have no plans to go back anytime soon!
I'm hoping annexation of East Cleveland into Cleveland will happen soon so University Circle will come in and clean the area up and make it a historic beutiful neighborhood again. Also to get the better city services it desperatly needs. Its for the better for East Cleveland ive been praying for that to happen soon.
Still own a house in Maple Heights; but hey it is "WHITIES FAULT" for not staying to pay for all the blacks that were subsidized to move in back in 1996, Bill Clinton and Obama forcing banks to sell to people that couldn't afford the mortgage. Oops my bad "WHITIE" should pay for all repairs for their houses through Federal Tax Dollars too!
@@noseintheairelephant196 I was doing fine out there , it was family back east I had to take care of. I liked the area , even though I didn't have alot of friends or any family out there.
I'm growing up in EC I'm 14 and I'm not happy with the way my city looks but I'm proud to be from there because it shows we can make it even in the baddest environment
I feel so sorry for them in east cleveland they look like really good decent people please be careful of who you vote for a lot of bad people in our world today everywhere. If you can move out of there do so, I hope you can
Use to live in East Cleveland graduated from Shaw high school in 1979 went to the army came home in 1986 and road the RTA from the airport got Windermere in East Cleveland. And hit my knees and almost cried the population was the walking dead. They dropped them drugs on that city and its gone forever. 😥 sad.
Y'ALL DON'T UNDERSTAND that when people are trying to SURVIVE ain't no time to be doing all this extra shit. The people who can leave, leave. All the resources they could bring goes with them. Most of the city is abandoned. People can't "come together" And tear down houses. It's govt property. Nobody cares about the city and it's sad.
I wont to save my city Cleveland and my city is crying and in pain somebody help my town Cleveland I dont like wat am seeing we need to unite and stop killing each other my so called black people we r brothers and sisters stop fighting each other
Trying to survive? Seeing how some of them look like humpback whales, they don't have to scrape the scraps together to survive lol. Get their lazy asses off the couch and rebuild and maintain the community. No magic dwarfs are gonna appear to do it for you.
@@spacebug30 You sound STUPID. How many people do you know that paves the roads in their neighborhoods and fix properties that don't belong to them , AND pay taxes? You're a hypocrite.

I work as a maintenance man in section 8 housing. When I turn apartments they are nice enough I'd live there. Six (6) months later it looks like I was never there. The problem is the tenants !
anthony soltau It's a plan of gentrification. Watch how Cleveland Clinic and University Hospital will knock it all down and build it back up for their employees and the students and professors at Case western reserve university. This was done on purpose through social engineering.
East Cleveland asked to merge into Cleveland, but the East Cleveland council members put in a list of outrageous conditions that would have preserved their own pay and power and made a bad situation even worse. Not surprisingly, Cleveland said "Thanks, but no thanks>"
I live in slavic village on the east side. Have lived here all my life. I can tell you from what i noticed that once the older Polish and Slovakian people started moving out and their homes getting turned into rental properties is when everything started getting worse. Most of the people moving into those places didnt care about keeping the property in good condition because they would stay a few months till they were evicted. Some would even damage the houses or steal pipes and frames to scrap. Crime went up as well about the same time these renters moved in. Had a bike stolen when i was a kid and a car when i was 20. I dont want to blame one race on this because ive seen trash from every race in this area. It needs to blamed on the lack actual good landlords in this area. Dont even check on what tenants doing till the damage is done and they just let these houses fall to pieces. City also slacking on knocking down all the abandoned houses. Pretty sure 25% of my street would be empty lots.
I lived in West Park area for thirty years. Nice, working class neighbor hood. When the housing crash of 2008 hit, many lost their homes, and property values plummeted. Those that had the means left. First, the foreclosed homes were bought by investors. Then, for people trying to sell and move out, the investors were the only ones buying the homes, But, the investors want a quick return on their investment. Add to that the development if the inner ring neighborhoods, and here comes section 8 I left in 2015.
You make good points; that's what you get when City Hall is hostile to landlords and gives them no reason to invest; does nothing to enforce building codes, makes it hard to evict problem tenants; all in the name of helping the poor...
stbx43z and look who's making it fit to live in ,reclaiming it from the ones who moved in and eventually turned it in to a ghetto. Used to be a fancy neighborhood that you'd doll up and wear pearls too. It's nice to see it reclaimed, made nice and restored.
mike johnson You'd be amazed where you can afford to live when you put in the effort to learn skills that qualify a person to do more than just flip burgers.
My family moved to East Cleveland in 1957. My mother and father were both graduated from Shaw. and so was I. The East Cleveland I grew up in hasn't existed since the late 80's.
I just took a trip to Cleveland and It is terrible. I may have seen 2 police cars The Whole time I was there. That concerned me for a dangerous neighborhood and I am from the ghetto of NY. I think this city has so much potential of the people pull together and put some sweat equity in.
Not seeing any police is not fault of the size of Cleveland's police force. They have triple the number of officers, of most cities with similar population (385,809 as of 2016).
I literally just drive through EC last night just for old time's sake. I was sick to see what my old home looks like. Whole streets abandoned, pot holes that look more like craters. The whole city needs to be leveled, for safety sake and start over. Makes me want to cry real tears.
I remember living in Cleveland for three years while I was in job crops on Euclid and Carnegie and it was a party city back in them days. Downtown was lit but then after the 90s was winding down so Did the importance off the cities and its people. Honestly I believe that if people gave more of a damn about their communities and stop waiting on the government for everything, we can get our communities together. Jobs are needed, create them, clean up your streets, be a crossing guard and watch out for your kids standing on the corners, volunteer at schools, kitchens, help those you see need it in stead of yelling government help , yell community help, neighbors help.js
I thank e.c. could reinvent it's self. I mean a few bars a gay bar, couple liquor stos . A gun shop, some drug dealers, a chop shop, a car wash,a hair salon, a nail salon, a pimp wit some hoes, a resale shop, a check cashing place, a gay bath house, a crack house, and get rid of da Po Po yo. Cause they just cause trouble. A chicken shack, a rib joint and a after hours bar! I no we could do dis! Shit man I can see it all now.
Why do you people keep pointing that out? Does it take a PhD to understand low income households have lower quality meals and eat unhealthy foods? Its unfortunate that to make a fresh salad or fo buy fresh fruit is more expensive than a pack of Ramen or something off McDs Dollar menu. Now if you just want to call people fat do that, but dont sound ignorant in your facetiousness.
I grew up in a west side suburb of Cleveland. This situation, African Americans on the near east side of Cleveland, called the "Hough" District has persisted for my entire life of 68 years. This was the epicenter of the riots in the sixties. I moved out west to get away from that city...a city where the river caught on fire. But, having said that, these folks persist in being victims, they will not, or won't not roll up their sleeves and fix their problems. All they have to do is look across the lake at Detroit... I'm not a racist, but how much longer are these people going to be looking for someone else to fix THEIR community. If the police are as corrupt as they say, then the FBI and federal authorities should be vigilant and prosecute rogue cops. But this issue has persisted for a long time....it's so sad.
I lived in Collinwood in the early 80's and for 17 years it was a very nice place to live. They started the busing as the blacks thought they were not getting a decent education. Everyone kept their homes and property up,such a nice place to live . So after the busing here comes the kids from east 148,149,150,crossing over East 152nd to go up Saranac Road to school . The kids just could not walk up the street to the school ,they started branching out into the neighborhoods . First graffiti on the houses, one morning 2 young kids threw a rock through my neighbors front window and ran ,then they started stealing newspapers . Soon stolen cars were brought in and one burned in the lot behind my house and one sat a week out in the front with the column peeled and dash ripped apart windows broke out . Before I even realized the whole neighborhood was a ghetto . I packed up my stuff and it all was left in my rear view mirror . That was in the late 90's That place now is nothing but a ghetto. I want to know who was the blame for this ? Who destroyed this nice neighborhood ? Anyone with a brain got the heck outta there . I moved out of Cleveland and you could not pay me to live in that crap hole.
I went to the Cleveland Institute of Art in the late 60's, early 70's and I used to drive from Parma to University Circle. The route took me thru downtown, onto the Shoreway drive and then down Liberty Blvd...now I think it's call MLK Blvd. I prayed I wouldn't break down on Liberty Blvd., because of the neighborhood surrounding it. After I graduated, and the Cuyahoga River caught on fire, the crime in the city and the crap weather of NE Ohio, I took a job for a high tech firm in Boise, Idaho in the early 80's....Best thing I ever did...fly fishing in the river running right thru town, pristine water and air...the Rocky Mountain....I never, never, never looked back. The people living in Hough and East Cleveland have only themselves to blame. During the administration of Carl Stokes, they bought into the liberal lie that the white man had done this to them. As long as these people identify as victims, waiting for someone else to clean up THEIR mess, they will continue to fail....I didn't want to waste my life in the shit hole that Cleveland has become.
Who owns the land? The same people allowing this city to deteriorate to a point where they sell the property by imminent domain and gentrify it later when everyone finally abandoned it. Use history as lesson and not ignorance and racism the number statement of a racist/bigot or someone trying to say a problem is racial rather than addressing the actual issue is I’m not a racist 😒 sure buddy. If you weren’t you wouldn’t have added that statement. Look into the sources of the problem and quit blaming the results. I guess according to you what they did in New York and other areas that have been more recently gentrified was white people saving the day again 🤦♀️ people like you choose to be blind to reality to pad your egos and hide from the mirror
@@whosthat6944 I agree with some of what u said. I only take issue with ur comment that just because someone points out something racial that means they "are" a racist, hence why they pointed it out, according to u. Thats really not true. As Skip Bayless even said (bad reference i know) "Something can be racial without it being racist". This is 100% true. Its only now in this pussified world that anything having to do with race is automatically deemed racist. Why do u think stand up comics dont even make racial jokes anymore? Cause everyone is a pussy and cant take a joke, or even a racial statement without it being deemed as racist.
During the bad recession, it was predicted Detroit's gateway would continue through Cleveland straight down to Canton, Ohio. Goodyear ended up keeping their headquarters in Akron & improvements followed. :)
Keller70 you are so right... as a black man I walk or run my neighborhood and see trash and pick it up. The grass is high across the street I get my lawnmower and cut it. We dont complain in my neighborhood we take action. We go to council meetings and city planning input functions. Most importantly we vote. These videos you see black neighborhoods complain about needing help, help yourself first, take pride in your neighborhood. I am willing to bet the people they interviewed havent been to a city or county Council meeting or call the departments in question and gave a formal request for services. Stop complaining about whats not happening and start bragging about what you made happen. Most importantly vote those sorry ass politicians out of office if you're registered to vote, surely you are with all that dissatisfaction you have with city leadership.
Grew up in East Cleveland went to Superior grade school Kirk Jr. High and was a grad. from Shaw1964. So sad to see what happened to this once wonderful city. Worked on Euclid Ave and Taylor from 1965 until 1971 and then worked in Cleveland Hts. Noble rd. until 1974. Then on to 222nd st. and Lakeshore in Euclid until moving to Nevada in 1976. Wish I had never come across this video. I knew that the city was in bad shape but seeing the places that I once enjoyed as a kid on this video just sickens me.
I am a Jersey born and bred. My Grandmother lived in E.C. back in the 70's. I moved to Cleveland and My partner is from E.C. We lived there 2003-2005. Poor Government choices. The one Mayor that seem to want to help was pushed out by misguided older people. Mayor Gary does not care about EC at all. So sad, that it is such despair.
Crime and destruction is a cultural problem. I have lived in Moundsville and Glen Dale, WV, Baltimore and Cleveland. Even though those small towns in WV are dirt poor, crime is 10-30 times less prevalent in those towns compared E. Cleveland and Baltimore. This video shows the law-abiding people of E. Cleveland fearful of the violent youth of their community. Every violent city has a cultural problem and the government cannot fix it. Crooked people are the problem.
Same thing is happening in Canton, but everyone wants to turn a blind eye until it’s to late. The land remains the same. It’s people that change. It’s people that destroy themselves and communities.
It's not about the blight, it's about the people that caused the blight. They just set back and expect someone else to do all the work and provide the money. It's your neighborhood, you fix it, start a business of some kind and use the income to fix you home.
@@Joe-kb1sm same I was in W. 130th tho. But I went to the east side from time to time bc a lot of family lived there so ik how bad it is over there. Shit is sad bruh
I live in a suburb of Cleveland & I've always felt bad for people living in East Cleveland. Downtown is booming, new apartments complexes, hotels, & other business are popping up EVERYWHERE & still East Cleveland gets no help!! 😨
Abandoned, yes...but abandoned by whom? White residents left, and businesses left. To those who say white residents and businesses have to accommodate black priorities: what kind of example is East Cleveland? The residents blame the city, but the real issue isn't crooks...it's a tax base that collapsed. Perceptions of property value have consequences on taxes. You can legislate, but you can't tell people what to think. There are identical examples in similar neighborhoods of St. Louis, Detroit, New York, Philadelphia...one could go on.
In order to solve a problem, you must first identify the root cause of said problem. And that's just what this video didn't do. It didn't delve into how this community became like this. Why did the businesses leave or close? Once you know why, then you can take steps to correct the problem. But just interviewing residents and hearing their complaints isn't going to solve anything.
All the gang violence drug dealing and armed robberies are why east Cleveland is trash. Young people don't want to find a job and believe me there is jobs. They would rather sell drugs and rob than work
A+ Joseph. Job WELL DONE. I wish the spoken parts were a couple of notches above the soundtrack, and in both channels, but I’m Very Glad You made THIS. I believe the E CLE school district is the poorest in OH, and ?4th poorest in the Nation perhaps? So Incredibly Sad. Thank You for your well made Film.
What kills any city is turning homes into rentals because it lowers the property value. Renters don't plan to stay long so they don't keep up on the house and yard maintenance and it becomes an eye sore. So the neighbors move because they want to sell their homes before the property value dips so low that they can't sell it for what they paid. So their home becomes a rental and like dominoes one house after the other falls into the trap and productive people move out and Section 8ers move in. Then local businesses close because the locals cant afford to buy what theyre selling and people don't want to shop there due to the high crime rate. Eventually, the crime rate reaches a point where nobody wants to live there or move in. So you have abandoned buildings and homes that rot because nobody is maintaining them. So what's the result? East Cleveland.
I have lived in East Cleveland my entire life. I graduated from Shaw High School in the 90’s. Some things that happened here is our fault. The majority happened due to redlining. Our parents bought houses from people who we’re inhospitable and wanted to leave because they were afraid we were coming. I’ve often heard we were the first Black people on the block. The white people moved out soon after. There is a lot to this story.
Here is what I would love to see happen ; first I do not see East Cleveland as anything other than what it is , a perfect opportunity to show ourselves what we are capable of doing when people of all races come together, share ideas and decide to work together to create good . A couple of ideas ; what if we start dismantling some of these houses that are in the worst of shape and repurpose the materials ? A lot of these structures have old hardwood , siding , and hardware that people will buy to use . The bricks can be sold and what does not sell can be used to create beautiful landscape , such as side walks or a small wall around an orchard . We could volunteer and set up teams to begin demo work , and what revenue is raised by the selling of some of the materials could be divided up and split amongst the volunteers in a fair way for everyone. We could also save some of these homes for people who need them and teach them how to fix them as we work together as a community . Let's make East Cleveland an inspiration to the rest of our nation and do ourselves proud ! What are everyone's thoughts ? And we can start this RIGHT NOW by sharing ideas with each other and information . How about it People ? BTW I have been doing construction work of all types since I was a child , so please believe me WE CAN MAKE THIS OUR REALITY !
You nailed it. Its "People Power" that is needed. Politicians always leave things in the air and never get at the real problem. Thats all politicians both democrats and republicans.
🤣 LMFAO "When people of all races come together." You really think anyone other than white people would be willing to do any hard work whatsoever to make the neighborhood nice again? And then they'll all start shrieking about "muh gentrification."
This is so sad! I remember when my grandparents owned their home on Eddy rd, growing up and spending time over there in the late 80s early 90s was a pretty nice community. …
I grew up in East Cleveland and I feel like it's only getting worse. We need to start buying properties there and making that place nice again because they sure ain't gonna do it for us!
He nailed it nothing from nothing leaves nothing! I smoked a lot of crack in EC back in the late 90's early 2ks been clean off that shit for over 10 years now =)
I need to talk to someone. I know this post is nine months ago. I feel like I am falling and cannot get up. I want to break my fall but how? Mr. Marki I am so tired of this shit. It is not supposed to be like this. I want to stop I leave it alone for a couple of weeks or months, once 3 or 4 years. How may I ovecome!!!!!?? I have no family no friends no one who cares about me. I live alone am poor uneducated and reside in Kingston Jamaica. I was deported from the states because of this thing that eats at my soul. I was overwhelmed when I was 17 didn't know what I was getting into. I only wanted to commit suicide because of a broken heart by a man who was old enough to be my fathe. He disrespected me for another chick. I was devastated. I never grew up with a father and he was the first person I fell in love with. I wasn't prepared emotionally or mentally for that kind of relationship and I was way too young. But I was not protected. I grew up with a foster mother who abused me mercilessly verbally emotionally and physcologically. I flinched one day while standing beside her waiting for a bus, she had only moved her hand for some to touch her wig or face I am not sure. I realized I grew up timid as a child. That really did hurt because Jamaican women and men are very aggressive. I have had to toughen up over the years since coming back. I still try to keep myself safe but the things I have to do to survive hurt. I've been shooed out of jobs because I talk different I have an accent good manners and am not willing to gang up on people and take away their opportunity for earning a living. I don't fit well with gossipers, prone to violence people, jealousness that leads me to tear down anyone by badmouthing, lies or any other means necessary. I don't know why it is my people find it necessary to hate someone because they are striving to be good. I worked at a pricesmart here in Jamaica and it i was a paid membership shopping store. I got the most membership renewals each weak on a constant basis and the cash reward which I was so grateful for. I keenly remember members daily complaining that the cashiers packed their loaf of bread at the bottom of bags and then piled every other heavy items of grocery on top = squished bread. I could not understand why my co workers didn't care. Still dont. I struggle with remembering the high crack cocaine induces. I am terrified. I love clean healthy things. I am alone. This doesn't help. The councillor services provided here are just doing the job by the book. They don't even offer a mentor to contact on a weekly basis for an extended period of time. I got six weeks of councilling some time awhile back and was released like a catch and release program. I don't want to take my addiction for granted. I need a magic pill to cure me of this disease. I know life has to be better and is better without it. How do I deal living in a neighborhood where they play loud music into the late am. How do I deal with neighbors who try to intimidate, not all, but most low-key. It is hard smelling marijuana and cigarette smoke all the time. If I could afford it I would move uptown to a peaceful environment that is more conducive to good livity. I would be so happy to stay healthy with all the healthy people I see around me. I remember being able to spend some time in one of those neighborhoods once because I was dating a gardener who had a live in job at one of the houses there. I did not want to leave. I spent as much time there as possible. I would enjoy walking down to the supermarket with him. When it was time for me to go back to my home I didn't want to. The air was sooooo fresh up their. I have been to places in the country where the air is so clean. I did not even think about crack while there and I had space opportunity and funds to buy and use. I really hate Kingston but it is where I live. I really don't know anyone who lives in the country and the concern about transportation cost and daily commute to Kingston where most people earn a living is a concern. I worry about keeping a roof over my head and most I think people who live in the country own the land their house is on and then family members live with them. Most people who work minimum wage jobs whether they live in Kingston or the country live with family members so that equals to no bills or contributing a small portion. I don't have and have never had that luxury. I have been on my own since 14 technically 16. It hurts I want to cry. And then I have this problem. It is not a good escape. It hurts my body. It takes away money I can otherwise spend usefully. If I had not gotten addicted I think I would be against drugs and would not have touched it or sought it out if I knew it wasn't a thing you pick up and put down when you are done with it like you do with juice or an alcoholic drink but here I am in this trap. I just don't want to put myself in a situation where I ding myself smoking. NO. So many triggers here in the ghetto. I want to breathe. Pardon my long letter. Thank you for reading.
Nicole Samuels i really enjoyed reading this! I could feel a lot of your emotions! Dear nicole, i hope you somehow find the strength to overcome this. Life can be VERY unfair to some people and its not always their fault. Its so frustrating to see people have to go through these type of scenarios. I think you can do much better if you can straighten out your “mental state”. Its ok, I somewhat understand where your coming from. Please be sure to go easy on yourself! Its absolutely unfair what some things happen to people but “you deserve better”. It may sound hard but just Try to get ur hands busy with something to do. Work, study anything u like, be a little more adventurous and have new experiences. And Dear Nicole, i can feel a little of your pain! Not from experience but ur beautiful writing So I guess your not completely alone. The best advice i can think of is... continue searching and communicating with people of your situation! Find people who are also struggling with crack and want to try and stop. Make a small group 3-9 people. Look for people who have been through alot such as you and trust me u will feel insanely better. Don’t stop reaching out to people who you think can be compatible with you. You need friends! I know it can be hard when things like “anxiety, depression, drug use etc” are in the equation but one small rewarding step will lead to the next bigger one. I wish you the best nicole🙂😢❤️❤️❤️ goodluck!
Nicole Samuels my comment is messy with ideas thrown up everywhere but I just really wanted to give some support. I really like reading, so i would appreciate a nice lengthy narrative piece of writing ☺️
I wanted to say before my phone battery died that between the age of 13 -15 my foster mother told me my biological mother is a whore and told me I am a ghetto swipe. This happened during one of her verbal sessions. I was only a child I didn't know where this was coming from. Tears fell from my eyes while I pressed my school uniform. She hadn't touched me she hadn't done anything physical. It stayed with me to this day. I want the whole world to see this. I want someone to know. I need a backbone to fight drugs. It makes my body sick. I have no love for it. My only love is my kitten wgo shows me love. I take care of her. Sometimes she looks deep into my eyes and it is like she knows I have problems. I treat her kind though. I wouldn't do anything less. Thank You for hearing. And may i add on that at 17 when I wanted to commit suicide I wanted to slit my wrists and believed that smoking cocain would not let me feel the razor going into my skin. I didn't know that dependency would come afterwards. No one told me that part. I was molested. So much. Thank you. I need anyone to know. My people don't care enough. Handling it is not something I think they can even do. They lack compassion real interest and probably the means to help. And I don't think they know what it is to not be abusive. I live in an abusive culture. I am asking for help, reaching for air above the waves. I need the world to know. I am someone too.

I grew up in East Cleveland and you are right they need to do something for everyone there. They need to knock down the old house save what you can from them. God bless everyone there.
Lots of commenters here who are quick to judge without ever setting foot in East Cleveland for even one second, and just as quick to blame. You all should be ashamed of yourselves.
Growing up in East Cleveland gave me the tools to be who I am today. Heartbreaking seeing this. I remember when we started noticing this change happening in the 90's. It was still livable then. Now, this is crazy.

Cleveland is heading in a different direction
I lived in Glenville over 40 years, and it scary to me when I went back. And I have no plans on returning.
Dr. Wallace was my first Gyn
My son was born in 1973 at Forest City hospital, by Do Wallace. I have no idea where that hospital was. I couldn't find it today if you have me a million dollars.
I lived on Gatewood in 65
I once rented some cheap rooms out.

Then, for people trying to sell and move out, the investors were the only ones buying the homes,
But, the investors want a quick return on their investment.
Add to that the development if the inner ring neighborhoods, and here comes section 8
I left in 2015.
You make good points; that's what you get when City Hall is hostile to landlords and gives them no reason to invest; does nothing to enforce building codes, makes it hard to evict problem tenants; all in the name of helping the poor...

Nobody missing any meals in this video.
Hi joe nice video very sad though I grew up by Euclid Ohio and that city has changed also .
You keep doing this you keep on keeping this on and I'm not playing you are on point keep it keep it up great work outstanding love you
Now you see why Lebron has a hard time recruiting all stars to come play in cleveland with him. lol
Everyone seems a little reluctant to say what the real problem is.
Wow... Eastern Cleveland is the Detroit of Ohio.
I was waiting for the old guy in the plaid shirt with his belly sticking out to day......"Dammmm Lotness monsah"..."He wants Tree-fiddy"
south park reference? lmao
My grandma lives in East Cleveland and so does my aunt and they have perfect lives
A perfect life in East Cleveland? How? There is no solace, no peace, no beauty...can that possibly equate to perfection?
Ive always called E.C "New Jack City"
I'm from Cleveland. I'll never go back. I really feel for these folks.
Man in car says he was moving down South........like the South is just waiting with open arms.... you're looking at a whole new set of problems
actually a caravan from Honduras is on their way- they could live in east cleveland
Sin is why. As long as people believe living a depraved life is ok, our cities will reflect our actions as a people.
Gentrification ready! ...the new real estate tagline.
Absolutely.
These comments are ignorant AF! It's a shame people thinks it's us but don't know a damn thing. Do some research before y'all blame the community
Send the immigrants to East Cleveland!
Fact
Nothing from nothing leaves nothing- wow -he is absolutely correct! ☹️
Its crazy when you compare the west side of Cleveland to the east it’s completely different..
I live off W119st south of Lorain ave. I never go to any part of the east side, especial e. Cleveland.
This is a very sad state of affairs of the future of my other hometown from near Cleveland. Makes me cry.
We moved from a Middle Class TX Neighborhood to CLE Hts.
Our kids spent 1 yr attending Monticello MS.
Then we transferred to a Charter School Dwn Twn.
Had to drive from Mayfield rd up N Taylor, West on Euclid past Shaw HS :( , then North up Superior.
We ALL Witnessed your Subject Matter twice a day for 2 years.
It’s So Disheartening.
That's why it's important to preserve the Block...in memory and respect to the original Black families who struggled so hard to improve their lives!
Where in East Cleveland is this ?
Smoke more dope.
Well get yo ass there and fix it!
This is so sad! I remember when my grandparents owned their home on Eddy rd, growing up and spending time over there in the late 80s early 90s was a pretty nice community. …
" Dey ain't did nuttin"..🤣
Where the tires come from? Do people just remove tires and place them in that area?
The people who change/fix tires dump them. Auto shop businesses do it. It cost money to dispose of them.
They looks likes they eating good!😮😅😊
Make sure you keep voting for someone with a D next to their name. I'm sure next time will be different.
those 4 residents are sweet nice people🦋
Hello
@@Kyle906-Q8 Thank You so much Kyle q8-906. THANK YOU! The anxiety, yes it gets to me. You hit it right on the head. Thank you for the advice. I don't know where you are but THANK YOU! Thank You for the advice and suggestions, thank you
I grew up in East Cleveland and you are right they need to do something for everyone there. They need to knock down the old house save what you can from them. God bless everyone there.
Ain't nothing there, it's called Move away.
Lots of commenters here who are quick to judge without ever setting foot in East Cleveland for even one second, and just as quick to blame. You all should be ashamed of yourselves.
