    A 'cold chisel' is used by metal workers, mechanics, fitters etc, it is a chisel used for rough cutting metals from sheet metal to cast iron. Wood chisels, stone chisels and cold chisels are designed for purpose and are shaped accordingly. so a 'cold chisel' is primarily for metalworking. By the way, I am a retired old school mechanic. Thanks for your reactions to this iconic band, I'm an Aussie and have enjoyed their music since day one.

      Yeh, with mushroomed heads cos buggers won't dress 'em up. Handy tool for sure. Why Chisel called themselves that, hard hitting and cutting edge?

    • @artistjoh
      @artistjoh ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A cold chisel is definitely a thing. wood working chisels, and masonry chisels are things to, but every working class man knows and uses a cold chisel. Calling themselves Cold Chisel is referring to working class origins, especially working in metal working shops. It is associated with being hard and real but has the added benefit for a band of being associated with the cutting edge.

    Cold Chisel is made from high grade vanadium steel used for cutting 'cold' metals. Used for removing waste metal when a very smooth finish is required or when the work cannot be done easily with other tools. Ideal for handyman, DIY and construction use. cold chisels can be used on metal, say if you want to remove a nut that wont budge or is rusted on you choose the chisel suited to the size of the nut then you get a heavy hammer and bang it and it will cut through the nut

    Hey guys, my Google search brought this up - Cold chisel masonry
    Cold chisels are used to cut rivets, to split nuts or bolts that refuse to come loose, or to break castings. They can also be used to cut sheet metal. The metal chisels with edges in other shapes have other applications, such as grooving or shaping corners.
    Cheers

    The cold chisel is hard or tempered because the metal being cut or shaped by it is hard. In the case of a hot chisel, the metal being cut is generally soft. Hence, the hot chisels are not as hard and tempered as compared to cold chisels.

    Cold chisel
    A cold chisel is a tool made of tempered steel used for cutting 'cold' metals,[2] meaning that they are not used in conjunction with heating torches, forges, etc. Cold chisels are used to remove waste metal when a very smooth finish is not required or when the work cannot be done easily with other tools, such as a hacksaw, file, bench shears or power tools.
    The name cold chisel comes from its use by blacksmiths to cut metal while it was cold as compared to other tools they used to cut hot metal. Because cold chisels are used to form metal, they have a less-acute angle to the sharp portion of the blade than a woodworking chisel. This gives the cutting edge greater strength at the expense of sharpness.
    Cold chisels come in a variety of sizes, from fine engraving tools that are tapped with very light hammers, to massive tools that are driven with sledgehammers. Cold chisels are forged to shape and hardened and tempered (to a blue colour) at the cutting edge.
    The head of the chisel is chamfered to slow down the formation of the mushroom shape caused by hammering and is left soft to avoid brittle fracture splintering from hammer blows.
    There are four common types of cold chisels. These are the flat chisel, the most widely known type, which is used to cut bars and rods to reduce surfaces and to cut sheet metal that is too thick or difficult to cut with tin snips. The cross cut chisel is used for cutting grooves and slots. The blade narrows behind the cutting edge to provide clearance. The round nose chisel is used for cutting semi-circular grooves for oil ways in bearings. The diamond point chisel is used for cleaning out corners or difficult places and pulling over centre punch marks wrongly placed for drilling.
    Although the vast majority of cold chisels are made of steel, a few are manufactured from beryllium copper, for use in special situations where non-sparking tools are required.
    Cold Chisels are predominantly used in Repoussé and chasing processes for the fabrication of bronze and aluminium sculptures.

    The band name Cold Chisel was names after a song by Don Walker of the same name. In the early 70s the band didn’t have a name they just changed it each time they appeared, but the name of this particular song seemed to stick, so they kept it as the band name. There are plenty more chart topping Chisel songs if you decide to do another Chisel week. Sorry Canada! "Breakfast at Sweethearts" is another one off the top of my head that is worthy of your fine reaction. These are the songs of my youth.

    My dad was a blacksmith. He had a few cold chisels lying around the place. Cold chisels are for cutting through cold metal, and hot chisels were for cutting through hot metal.

    Hi Guys. Just wondering if you would like to hear some great Australian Blues/Rock from 71? The band is 'Chain'. song Black & Blue. They were huge back then. Matt Taylor is and was the best blues harp player I have heard, and I've been around. I hope you play it and enjoy. Thanks

    FYI cold chisel
    noun
    : a chisel made of tool steel of a strength, shape, and temper suitable for chipping or cutting cold metal

  • @grantmuller7475
    @grantmuller7475 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lads a cold chisel is a specifically designed chisel primarily used to split metal items.
    "The cold chisel is hard or tempered because the metal being cut or shaped by it is hard. In the case of a hot chisel, the metal being cut is generally soft. Hence, the hot chisels are not as hard and tempered as compared to cold chisels."

    If you haven't seen the Aussie comedy Kath & Kim, it's a good way to understand what a bogan is.
    Pretty appropriate song to finish on, as it's their last hit song of 83'. Ian was still learning it and forgot the words during their last stand tour. It's featured on the video. What was supposed to be "Saturday night's already old, walking into Sunday and I find, all desires are cold etc...". But it turned into "Saturday night's already old, I can feel the same old hole, cigarettes to ease my mind, tell me what you like, no I don't mind"... 🤣🤣🤣
    Then Jimmy holds up the words for him.

    Cold Chisel was named after a Don Walker Song titled Cold Chisel
    I think they were also known as the barking spiders, they changed there name a few times before Jimmy joined them.
    Thanks for a great week.

    Hey guys, loved Chisel week, and believe me, you’ve only just scratched the surface..
    How they got the name.. it was a Don Walker song.. but at the time they were called Orange, but wanted a 2 word, 3 syllable name, like Deep Purple, or Led Zeppelin..
    Another point was (this could have been in the lyrics, as it’s an unknown Chisel song) is (Cold Chisel) if hit hard enough, can break rock…
    IMO, that makes the band name bloody brilliant..
