Hey there you two. Good job repairing your drive unit. For future reference, the little gear that was stripped is called the sun gear. The 4 gears are called planetaries, and the outer gear is the ring gear. Your car transmission has similar set up inside it if you have an automatic shifting transmission. I don't know about Morocco, but over here in the US, the snap ring pliers are really inexpensive and so should be in every tool kit. There are inside and outside types so get both. They make life so much easier when doing a repair. They usually sell for about 2.00 each over here. I would recommend a white lithium grease for your gears so next time you get a chance take it apart and put a heavier grease in there or they will start to chew on each other. Remember that the lubricant performs a cushion job. The thin film of lube keeps the metal from rubbing directly and so eating each other up. Too much grease just gets in the way, so no good to go that way. That gear box should be a regular maintenance item on your list of things to service. Raymarine thought that if they made the parts of self-lubricating material it would last for a long time. Nice try RM. If someone had applied silicone grease every few years, it may have gone forever. I suppose I am 3 months behind telling you all this. Starting to warm up over here so we should have our Jeanneau in the yard maybe next month for new seacocks all around. Keep having fun and try to be the guy and gal that Walter thinks you are. Lennie
Here comes Lennie with some great snippets of info this week! Thank you very much 🙏🏼 so I bought some snap ring sirclip pliers in Morocco but didn’t include the footage. The pins/ ends of the tool didn’t fit in the holes of my sirclip, they were ever so slightly too large. So I was a bit put out by that 😂 we will definitely be servicing one a year going forward, try and eek some more life out of the unit.
You resolved the mystery about the roll pin removal. Thanks big time, i was convinced it was an imbus screw....thanks to you i can order new parts and save 2000e
Excellent for anyone with the same problem will not fear theirs breaking I have a similar motor on mine but it drives an hydraulic ram the brushes do wear out an also create a great deal of carbon dust which tend to clog up the free movement of the brushes causing the brushes to lose firm contact on the armature or is it commutator which ever It causes failure I replaced the brushes it worked for a while but soon failed again I took it to the local garage blew the motor out and it has worked fine since 2016. Good luck with your channel and have fun .Mike
Aaaaah thanks for the feedback Mike. Glad you found it useful 😊 the motor is the one thing I didn’t service this time round. I’m amazed it’s still going to be honest as it’s dated 1989, but maybe it didn’t get much use?
Great video. I have mine half apart and this takes the mystery out of the tasks ahead. BTW this is the first time I have ever commented on TH-cam. So enjoy my best comment to date.
Good work - Although the hand steering made it a more engaging passage, I look forward to reaping the reward of your hard work with some proper champagne and cigarette cruising around the med some time soon! Secondly, please consider camera angles whilst shooting... the gooch shot 2mins in lasted uncomfortably long and was unbecoming. Much love to both x
😂 I did wonder if somebody would comment on the gooch shot. Decided to keep it in for the fans. Was a pleasure to have you onboard ☺️ look forward to more of it.
Brilliant and very helpful video. Thank You !! Our problem is the ram goes in by hand, but not out. With drive motor engaged or rotating the disassembled head, it goes both ways. Something is then jamming the linear drive one way inside which prevents manual steering. If anyone knows why ? I would be very grateful ???
That is a strange one. Maybe it’s something to do with the electrical connection to the motor? The connection is okay that makes the arm go out, but there’s a bad connection on the connection that reverses the motor? Just a guess. Did you figure it out already?
@@sailingnendaz Having looked further, the thrust bearing on the shaft had excessive play due to a broken roll pin which allowed it to move and jamb in one direction. Hudson Marine sell spare parts and show an exploded diagram which was a great help !
Thanks for the video. I am taking my drive apart (with the aid of your video). I can't seem to remove the brass plate with the planetary gear on it. Any suggestions? There seems to be a pin running through the shaft but not sure how to remove it.
Fantastic video, thanks so much! Did the noises disappear with the change of gears? My drive is currently making the same noise and does not feel very smooth when trying to move the rod in and out. So I suspect our drive will also give up soon. Because of the resistance I thought it might be the clutch but thanks to your video I think the problem might be on the gears. Did you also feel difference in force needed to push the rod in and out? Thanks again and fair winds!
I think the force was similar. But the noise was a lot quieter once we replaced the parts ☺️ if you have the same problem then eventually you will just lose all drive
@@malagpraustralia bought it with the boat so could but 23 years old. We have put over 6,000 miles on it. I am going to rebuild it and hold it as a spare and install a new one.
I’m honestly not sure - it was a bit chaotic in the moment. But it was making some horrible grinding noises and wasn’t able to keep the boat in a straight line. It was quite rough sea 🌊

They are a bit fiddly to get back in, but a bit of patience and it will be no problem!

Aaaaah congrats on the first comment. And I’m glad this was of some help for you!
Wow, well done!
Thankssssss guys 🙏🏼
Great video very brave to even try the repair yourself
Thanks Philip - had nothing to lose by trying though 😊

@malcolmdavid722 aaaah well done on fixing! Yes Hudson Marine is where we got our kit from too.

Whack it out with a hammer. It’s called a spring pin. Find a drill bit of the exact same diameter 😊 careful not to damage it

Can you add the part number you ordered ? We have the same issue and need to replace.

Hi Sailingiwa2045: what age is you autopilot? Here is the part you need: Raymarine N021 Heavy Duty Gear.
@@malagpraustralia bought it with the boat so could but 23 years old. We have put over 6,000 miles on it. I am going to rebuild it and hold it as a spare and install a new one.
Hi, where did you find the replacement gears? Thanks
Hudson Marine a UK based chandlery. I bought them online and got friends to bring the parts on in their suitcase.
@ cheers thanks! Im looking into getting a used ray marine linear drive for my boat and would want to upgrade the gears.
Feels like everybody have problems with autopilots, can someone make working one
Well this one is potentially 30 years old so it’s done pretty well all considered!
Yes, true. I write that comment before i know age of your autopilot.
Was you getting any error messages on your chartplotter ?

Know the feeling. We are trying to service and repair ours after changing everything else out . Where did you get your parts from
Not so great. Try John Deere AN102562 grease. Also, you could grease the motor bearings and replace the carbon brushes, if they need it.
Can you please v tell me
Tell you what?
