- Hello Friends!
Welcome to this episode where I talk about my updated 2023 3-season ultralight backpacking gear list! Just in time for Appalachian Trail thru-hikers for the 2023 season and plenty of time to get gear ordered for the Pacific Crest Trail or Continental Divide Trail. After some updates to my last video (www.youtube.co...) I am down to 9lb base weight thanks to the gear linked below, this is the lightest base weight I have ever had! This is the base of the gear that I will be bringing on my hikes for this season. I am planning multiple adventures such as climbing a '14er in Colorado in July, doing some Forest service road exploration and backpacking in Missouri and Arkansas, I'm hoping to hike the Manistee river loop in northern Michigan and many other adventures! This is a good gearlist that weekend warriors and Thru hikers alike may be able to relate to!
Below you can find my lighterpack as well!

This is everything I plan on taking with me on my 3 season hikes, I am also planning on dropping videos on how to pack my pack, as well as variations to this gear list like water storage, shelters, stoves and cook kits so let me know below if you'd like to see those!
The gear in this video can be found below, the Amazon links ARE Amazon affiliate links that help my channel without any extra support from you except clicking the link! As always, I am not sponsored by any of these gear companies, I just enjoy them!

im 6', about 240, and 'enjoying'(not) the pain 40 brings. I HATED my 20 inch pad options. I had resigned myself to thin closed cell foam pads. my buddy let me use his Nemo L/W- wow! I have quality sleep now even on 3 day trips. Highly recommended by another side/stomach sleeper.
Nice video! I ve seen you did us the metric people the courtesy of mentioning the weight of every item in grams also. Thank you, thank you for that.
Nice info and good setup.
Thanks man, what’s your favorite piece of kit that you carry?
I love my hammock gear quilt, I also have a 30 degree top quilt. I mostly hike in the northern US so it’s a great three season bag.
Do you have a more dedicated winter set up or do you supplement that bag with another one or a liner?
Looks like a really good gear list. Good deal on the duplex too. Im still on the fence about the single wall tents tho. I’m doing a lot of upgrades this year and next, as well. I’m planning an AT LASH in 2025 for my 55th birthday. So I’m trying to get as light as my budget will allow.
Thanks! Most of this stuff is pretty budget friendly except maybe the quilt and the tent. A good lanshan 2 tent or similar is a little heavier but a solid budget and lightweight option that is double wall. Hammock gear also usually has a 10-15% off welcome coupon as well!
@@thirdshiftstyle I have the Lanshan1 and really like it a lightweight “go to ground” option for when I have no place to hang my hammock.
@@BigCountryOutdoors325 good deal. What’s your hammock kit?
@@thirdshiftstyle I have a few different options. Onewind from Amazon was my first one. Then for ultralight summer, I use a Hummingbird long version. And my all around go to is a Dutchware Chameleon.
I have a Featherstone Moondance 25 top quilt (Amazon, but can’t beat it for the price) and a Hummingbird Puffin bottom quilt. It has a lot of good features for the price as well. I’m all about budget/inexpensive gear. I even shop the goodwill/thrift shops here in town.
Oh yeah…. I have a onewind winter tarp with doors and I have the Hummingbird Pelican that also has doors, but only weighs 12.8 ounces for an 11’ tarp.
What is YOUR favorite piece of ultralight gear??

I just got a Zpacks arc haul 70l as my upgrade pack. Been wanting one for over 2 years and finally pulled the trigger on it. It’s replacing a Kelty Shadow 4500 that I’ve been using for more than a decade.
So my new pack is now my favorite piece of gear.
You’re in front of me at raising cane’s
look like this good gear ,
Soo good ideal brother Soo vary good
Thank you ✊🏼
Check out Zero Foxtrot brand Zero shorts. Their freakin’ killer.
Thanks for the suggestion!
I'm guessing no, but can you fit a 1l water bottle in the strap pockets?
It’s more for a .7L bottle, a 1L bottle does fit but it kinda flops around a bit. Actually, I just made my own pack I’m going to be making a video on soon after I get some miles with it
If the down jacket runs a bit big, why would you size up? And 11oz is not 85g, if you realize you said those two things in the video.
Must’ve read my notes wrong but I got the weights correct on the screen, clarification on the jacket size - it runs SMALL so order large. Pretty simple
No gloves or hat for the 2023 season?
I did forget to mention I usually leave fleece liner gloves in my jacket for when they might be needed. No hat other than a ball cap since my jacket has a hood!
Dudes beard weighs more than his gear
wait.. you paid $70 for a pillow but said stingey about an expensive tent. what lol
Lol to be fair the pillow is 50 and a good pillow is worth a bit more than a tent with nice material
I agree, I’m starting to get old and I’ve realized that my sleep system is now the most important so it gets the most funding. Better sleep, better trip, more miles. I bring 2 pillows 😂
Ultralight hike is unsafe and risky! Stop this nonsense 🥴
I’d like to understand how you think it’s unsafe?
Stay home then🤨
