What really gets me when watching this....is knowing that my grandfather was on that train. He love trains (and he still dose today) and thought it was a great idea to go to Auckland on the train, When it crashed my grandfather opened the door on the seventh car and saw the chaos, he said to me "I never thought all of that could happen, seeing the lights of the cars floating down the river. I always think of that night every year to this day"
As a former railwayman and footplate crewman, I will never forget the valiant efforts of the station agent who tried to flag down that speeding express train on Christmas Eve 1952, or the scenes in the cab of the big KA949 4-8-4 as they realised something was dreadfully wrong and tried their hardest to pull her up in emergency and shut down the fire before riding her out onto the bridge and into history and eternity. RIP thou faithful servants.
Was one of the best films I have ever seen. Also one of the best moments in NZ television, in all its 51 glorious years. A fabulous film. Absolutely fantastic, brilliant.
i just want to say how much this film touched me :(...all the disasters that have happend here (including my home town chch) has made me realise how much nz has gone through...an amazing film to have watched :) Bob blair, i grew up hearing about your cricket greats but i never knew you had gone through this. i admire your strength.
Why have they never released this movie on DVD and/or Blu-ray? They should, and not just in New Zeland, but in many other places worldwide as well, including in America.
the tune they have in the movie "The Train" always sends a shiver down my spine when it plays and during the accident scene and Cyril Ellis running toward the engine (which was proven he couldn't have done it)
Eddie Agin Except in Tangiwai, the love/relationship story was a REAL par of the history. They really WERE engaged to be married by the time the train crashed.
@Trainlover300 Thanks Trainlover; unfortunately when I tried that link I got the message that the video is only available to people in New Zealand, and I'm in the U.S. I'd like to see the whole movie (big Dean O'Gorman fan), looks like I'll have to wait and see if it ever comes out on DVD...Thanks anyway, though!
Very sad and train crashing made me cry. It was brave for Bob to go out and bat given he lost his girlfriend. Given next year will be the 70th anniversary, will there ever be a: seconds from disaster?
Any idea how a Yank can see this? I live in the U.S. and couldn't find a website that streams TV1...but I'm a history buff and it looks like a great movie!
Looks like a really good, but really sad movie. @Sarah B I've seen it for sale on ebay.com but, I'm pretty sure since it was released in New Zealand that the region code is different, so you may not be able to play it unless you have a region free dvd player. I hope that helps.
Does anyone know if the simple piano piece in the trailer (it's also in the movie as i recall) is an actual piano piece or is just made for the movie? This movie was quite an intense trip. Had a headache for a while after

They didn't add the love story, the love story was true which makes it even more tragic.

Awsome movie. Almost cried from the disaster scene onwards. Driver Charlie Parker and Fireman Lance Redmen are my heroes.
He still visits her grave after all these years.
Sorry for the typo previously. It happened Christmas Eve 1953.
Song Name; Hine e Hine
It's like Titanic the movie but with a train. Take a historic disaster and add a love story. Instant hit. Looks like an awesome movie.
Eddie Agin Except in Tangiwai, the love/relationship story was a REAL par of the history. They really WERE engaged to be married by the time the train crashed.
