    "Can't imagine it's selling well". None of us could. The whole fandom got taken aback when Hulk suddenly started outselling Batman in the middle of the run. Usually, only things that outsell Batman are big events, launches of a big new book or Spider-Man. Hulk suddenly jumping over Batman in middle of his run may even got Batman writer fired.

Like he's surprisingly good at writing Superman in Up in The Sky. His Mr. Miracle book is also really good. But for some reason with Batman, it just doesn't feel right.

      Yeah. Reading the comic. Its clear that the writer actualy did his work and actually looked into what its like to be part of a system. Instead of what every other person does and just use it as a generic spooky thing or use just the stuff that is usualy in pop culture
      They bring up stuff that I myself have experienced. That I don't think I've *ever* seen in a piece od media

      It’s the way that Hulk was always meant to be: a horror story. He was basically Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, but over the decades it kind of lost that horror element to it. But Immortal Hulk is genuinely terrifying while also being thought provoking. It’s also super metal. He rips a guy’s spine out and whips him with it in one volume if that gives you any indication.

    Growing up, I was a large kid that did well in classes but had a severe anger issue and was prone to violent outbursts of anger. I oftentimes looked up to the Hulk and Banner as heroes, people with many of the same traits I had that are trying to make the world a better place even if they weren't always perfect or if they suffered in a way that those near them didn't know. As I got older, my anger lead to depression, but I always had the ideal of someone that isn't perfect or pure, and possibly even less than others, making the world a better place. Then I got a bit older and they found out I was born with a hole in my brain, which is really weird but also really easy to fix.
    The fictional character Hulk has saved my life, I am honor-bound to join him in his fight to destroy capitalism

      So, I didn't know that treating them as separate people was a thing. It's just what made sense to me in how to handle it, and I was surprised you thanked me for it. I started looking into DID more because of that. In my early 20's I had an episode where I started having thoughts that weren't my own and would occasionally lose control of myself. Eventually started having full conversations where we all started working together to be a more functional being. Boy howdy does that sound like stage 2 of treatment. I'm not saying I had DID, but maybe I understand it better than I thought.

      @@defenstrator4660 Capitalism is only a couple hundred years old and is in a death spiral. It took feudalism over 1,000 years to get to the point capitalism is at right now. If you look at the recent global problems, how capitalist a country is has been a good indication of how poorly it will handle it. I got a hole in my brain and even I can remember the 08 financial crash and the current pandemic that we're living through. Weird that the only way you're able to defend capitalism is to deny reality, almost like it's ripe for a smashing

    • @defenstrator4660
      @defenstrator4660 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@andrewwestfall65 Capitalism is simply the modern expression of the free trade of goods. It has existed since one guy was willing to trade some elk for a bowl. You are mistaking an economic system for a social one. Under feudalism people's human capital was being expropriated by the nobility, but even then trade flourished. Note how the serfs would flee the land and escape to the cities where they were free to trade their labour for wages rather than being trapped in bondage.

    Just gotta say speaking as a member of a Plural system (OSDD-1b) it might not be exactly "sensitive", but Immortal Hulk owns bones. It sure handles it a lot better than most Marvel Comics depictions of Plurality, and the whole "internal landscape full of kooky characters" thing is more realistic than you might suspect. Sure focusing the whole story around a "bad" alter is maybe a *little* gauche, but like you said: Devil Hulk isn't so much evil as operating along a different set of morals.

      I'm also part of a system. And yeah, its not the most perfect example of a system. But its worlds beyond most anything else I think ive *ever* seen in pop culture
      It really feels like they actualy did their research on what its actualy like to live like it and worked to actualy represent it
      Like some of the small details. Like with them having different ways of communicating. And their headspace.
      Hell even the fact they use terms like system and dormant. Which really arent terms that get *used* in pop culture depictions of systems
      And I don't think devil hulk is bad. He seems to genuinely be a good person. If.... Lacking in mercy, but its clear hes supposed to be a protector. He genuinely cares about Bruce and the other hulks. As well as a lot of the supporting cast.

    I know you mentioned it being weird for an A list character to have a massive tone shift in comics, but the Hulk in particular has had this pretty frequently. The Peter David run is almost unrecognizable from the tortured monster of the 70s with the introduction of Joe Fix-it, Doc Sampson and David's generally comedic tone, and Greg Ruk's Planet Hulk and it's various tie-ins make the Hulk into much more of a sword's and sorcery type character. If anything Immortal Hulk is much closer to the character's roots than the majority of his modern incarnations.

      The Peter David run also introduced Hulk as A Plural System to the canon by establishing Joe Fixit as The Grey Hulk from all the way back in the first short lived Hulk Series to playing with concepts like Fusion with the introduction of Merged Hulk (though that got a little wonky and instead of Fusing Bruce and Savage Hulk Doc Samson accidentally creating a whole new Headmate that just acted like a Fusion)

      @Alara Platt
      I believe every attempt to address plurality has merit, and the importance should not be on avoiding certain attempts, but passing every attempt under the most holistic and objective lens possible. People with any degree of "plurality" have had to survive carving their own way through life more and more as the places society once had for them have been suppressed. Today, in the US, we are in a society where one of the ruling political majorities insists that a person with "less than pure blood" is incapable of being a "Two Spirit", which is in direct contrast to the actual teachings of the Cultures with long held places for Two Spirits, who believe that any person can be born as such. To be fair, the other ruling political majority insists there is no such thing at all, so I guess that's technically crueler.
      So, being surrounded by white skinned people who tell me my heritage is invalid because of my own white skin, I've gained more from the lessons I've learned studying a green skinned comic book character than I have from any US political party continuing to insist it has all the answers and solutions for the entire world's ills, real and imagined.

      @@alaraplatt8104 I have actual, documented Aboriginal American heritage; I have physically white skin. I am not that concerned with embracing labels, but the concept of "Two Spirit" is something that has resonated with me in a way nothing else has. I want to clarify that I'm referring to the spiritual concept, not the social role. I do not claim the term as a label or even what I "identify" as, I merely refer to it as the only thing I've seen in this world that even begins to describe my experience as a person. I use it in a literal sense more than anything.
      Honestly, I'm content with just saying I'm a half-man half-woman freak these days. I have no people, I have no place. I simply attempt to peacefully coexist in a world filled with people who seem to hate my unusual nature by default. I wouldn't blame you for seeing me as a walking problem in need of "solving". The overall political system in the US would sooner have me die out of it than accept me as a person.

He was obsessed with trying to get back to "normal". To somehow not be a system anymore. He looked for a cure or for some way to get rid of them. Or even kill himself just so he wouldn't be that way
    And they actualy talk over how that was like. A really bad a shitty thing to do. And that it isn't wrong to exist like this. And the others in the system deserve respect as well. Not something to me medicalized away or be cured

    I think you should give The Punisher a way deeper dive than you have, because he's definitely not the 'fascists wet dream' even if they want him to be. Trust me, the cops who use Punisher logos have never read a single comic, they just like skulls. The secret to understanding The Punisher is that you must understand that the Punisher is the villain, very much like Judge Dredd. I suggest the Garth Ennis run, Punisher MAX, where we really delve into his psyche. He is quite literally a psychopath and in this series Ennis explores his motivations to an extreme degree, and it is decided in no uncertain terms that The Punisher just enjoys killing people, and is only using the death of his family as an excuse. The drama found in The Punisher is in the inner monologue. Yellow boxes represent The Punisher thinking, white boxes represent Frank Castle and there is a constant struggle between them.

Reminds me of Grant Morrison's stuff whenever DC lets him play with the New Gods, do an event book, or write a Superman story. If you haven't yet, you might want to check out some of the Young Animal stuff Gerard Way was doing: Doom Patrol, Shade, and Eternity Girl were all that same sort of space weird.
