Actually, book-Elrond is quite cool with it. He just tells Aragorn to get the ring destroyed and claim his thrown first. Elrond is my favourite character, so I find it a bit weird how film-Elrond is so upset about his daughter marrying a man. (Especially since i don't like Arwen anyway as her character got the best scenes that were originally done by Glorfindel in the book.)

In case anyone wants to know the real reason why Gandalf came back is because Saruman had failed his role in middle earth by joining with Sauron and seeing that Gandalf was the only hope left for middle-earth since the blue wizards were gone and I don't remember what happened with Radagast. Either way Gandalf came back as the white wizard of middle-earth to replace Saruman.
Radagast was still around. He's mentioned as helping Gandalf to escape Saruman's tower, but maybe he wasn't up to the task of opposing Sauron.

in end of lord of the rings his lord forgives him despite failing his mission since he didnt fail at "saruman" level and allows him return like gandalf
when gandalf was at black gate he was tending nature :D
Saruman had also died his robes multicolours, so Gandalf became the white wizard in the stead of Saruman.
"White" was not merely a colour but a status. When Saruman rejected white, he rejected his role and mission in Middle Earth.
Fun fact: Galadriel wanted Gandalf to be the head of the White Council, but they settled instead for Saruman. Wonder what would have happened if Galadriel had her way...

The elves called him mithrandir, while Gondor gave him a less awesome name, which was related to him always bringing news hard for the ears. Also, the passage of time in the afterlife is different than in middle earth, which explains why Gandalf did not remember the names given to him by the free folk. Gandalf's transformation to Gandalf the White symbolizes that Gandalf replaces Saruman and becomes what Saruman should have been. BTW, in the book Saruman renounces the title of white, replaces it with Saruman many colors. By doing this he does not only reject his title, but also his duties. I will also like to talk about the eagle plothole. Now, people think that destroying the ring would have been so easy if the eagles had carried Frodo to mount doom. This supposed plothole is no plothole at all, for the eagles are not the only flying mount in middle earth and Mordor possesses one of these creatures. Fell-beast, used by the Nazgul in combat and capable of pursuing any enemy by flapping their wings.
It’s kind of funny that in the lord of the rings books, the people who had the rings (Sauron, the elves, dwarves, and kings) were able to communicate with each other and update with each other as long as they had the rings. Does that mean JRR Tolkien (Sauron) invented Social Media before the PC was a thing?
