They started as troublemakers and comic relief, but eventually learned the importance of what they were part of and did very honorable things (both of them decided to fight in the war). This is a very well-written character growth. Rowling obviously tried to copy this, but failed in my opinion. Fred and George did fight, but were still used as comic relief with no change of character. Instead of showing their change, she decided to choose the simpler option of making them useful from the start - which is definitely not making them better characters. Then in the end of the series she killed one of them off to show how serious things have become, which is very lazy writing and an overused cliché.

While the other similarities make me question the originality of some of the HP characters, it's entirely possible (I would think likely) that Longbottom is used as a reference to LotR. Obviously Rowling knew their worlds were similar, it seems reasonable that she'd pay homage to his work.

The same case is basically with any element of LOTR. Why? Because it's normal to be influenced by collective works to create new independent story. Is LOTR not originally because of that? No. Is it copying or stealing? No. The same courtesy needs to be extended to Rowling and any other autor. Otherwise, all we can do is to close every bookstore in the world as there's no point in writting - you WON'T write completely original story. EVER. There's no reason to doubt the Old Testament because of similar writing styles. My dad is a Biblical archeologist believe it or not. I would disagree with the Dobby - Gollum comparison. It’s Kreacher who’s Gollum. They both serve an inanimate-ish object (Ring, portrait of Mrs Black), are bound to the main character, who has the power to force them to do anything, talk to themselves in the third person, are on different sides at different times... I wrote a college essay on how the one ring is similar to the elder wand and called the essay "one wand to rule them all" there's a teacher in our college who has us read one lord of the rings book, and one Harry potter book, and we do a comparison of them.
miamouse I took a class on Harry Potter. It was THE BEST. We actually spent most of our time reading philosophical texts as homework and then discussing their meaning and connection to HP in class. But the final was to rewrite the Final Chapter of HP, so that was cool.

The whole point of Merry and Pippin is to show the change they went through during their journey. They started as troublemakers and comic relief, but eventually learned the importance of what they were part of and did very honorable things (both of them decided to fight in the war). This is a very well-written character growth. Rowling obviously tried to copy this, but failed in my opinion. Fred and George did fight, but were still used as comic relief with no change of character. Instead of showing their change, she decided to choose the simpler option of making them useful from the start - which is definitely not making them better characters. Then in the end of the series she killed one of them off to show how serious things have become, which is very lazy writing and an overused cliché.

While the other similarities make me question the originality of some of the HP characters, it's entirely possible (I would think likely) that Longbottom is used as a reference to LotR. Obviously Rowling knew their worlds were similar, it seems reasonable that she'd pay homage to his work.

No. Is it copying or stealing? No. The same courtesy needs to be extended to Rowling and any other autor. Otherwise, all we can do is to close every bookstore in the world as there's no point in writting - you WON'T write completely original story. EVER. Everything has been written already many times over.

I am well aware of the texts that predate the Old Testament. In my opinion that's a stupid argument. There's no reason to doubt the Old Testament because of similar writing styles. My dad is a Biblical archeologist believe it or not. Those texts were completely irrelevant during the time where the Old Testament was written. Stop with the conspiracies. I've heard much better arguments than that.

I would disagree with the Dobby - Gollum comparison. It’s Kreacher who’s Gollum. They both serve an inanimate-ish object (Ring, portrait of Mrs Black), are bound to the main character, who has the power to force them to do anything, talk to themselves in the third person, are on different sides at different times... Shall I go on?
Yeah Gollum wants the ring but he was tortured when he had it. And Kreacher wants his mistresses' things/her house returned to her pureblood status but he was tortured by Voldemort and a lbuded by Sirius, then lost Regalus to voldemort
you are definetely right but dobby is much more famous than kreacher, everyone knows dobby so for this sketch dobby fits better
@@45memet Also true, and Dobby's ring is Harry and Bellatrix would've tortured Dobby if she didn't stab him. If people read the later books they might recognize Kreacher too, and he would sound like Gollum. Or Winky, Crouch's elf coud be Gollum. Precious was helping her master smuggle his son out of Azkaban, then they or Sr & Jr tortured her when things didn't go their way
Dobby and Kreacher are like Golum's Slinker and Stinker personalities.

I wrote a college essay on how the one ring is similar to the elder wand and called the essay "one wand to rule them all" there's a teacher in our college who has us read one lord of the rings book, and one Harry potter book, and we do a comparison of them.

We actually spent most of our time reading philosophical texts as homework and then discussing their meaning and connection to HP in class. But the final was to rewrite the Final Chapter of HP, so that was cool.

Charlie Castillo I don't remember what the minimum was, but mine was about 19 pages in Word, or about 5K words.
We also had to write a more traditional midterm comparing one of His Dark Materials books (The Golden Compass series) to Harry Potter. Man that was tough, because I am very disillusioned with HDM.
