17 years later and it absolutely stands next to any new release today. I love the full menu of buildings you get to choose from right from the start. As you say, the passing mechanism is brilliant. The provost adds such a huge element of player interaction. So many choices from building to contributing to the castle to gaining favors, each intertwining with each other. Everything just makes sense, so smooth. It's a joy whenever it hits the table. Great review!

Ahhh Caylus ! Such a fantastic game and one of the first that I have ever played. The original one is so good that i have absolutely no need to play 1303 version.

try 1303. I played it recently and it went straight to my top 20 of all time (I played more than 300 games). it's so simple but elegant. fantastic worker placement

Nice! I would like to see how this compares to the newer Caylus 1303 which is supposed to be streamlined.

I have both, I like both. They are different enough to have both. With new players I'll always play 1303. With my hard core group, we tend to like Caylus better - it's meaner and we like it mean.

Great review, thanks. I agree this is an elite game. It is so cleverly designed and despite being such an old worker placement example, it contains plenty of very interesting features. I love the fact you are actually building the board, laying the worker placement options by way of buildings, as you play. Yes, you have to be in the right mood to appreciate the potentially nasty interaction, but not every game needs to be soft and cuddly. Just genius, this one. My only complaint is I am so bad at it. Don't think I have ever won a game!

As you’re trying all these older games, I really think you should look into Age of Steam. It’s basically like a heavier Power Grid mixed with Brass. I think you would like it!

Definitely keen to try it. I had an opportunity to play it last month but we didn't get to it

Yes! Caylus is a recent addition to my collection. I agree that it is amazing how this has stood the test of time. After, you started reviewing these older Ystari games, I have been picking them up here and there. So far, I think this and Ys are my two favorites for something more involved and Mykerinos when I want something lighter. I am interested in getting Sylla and Amyitis. Have you played either of those yet, and will they get a review in the future? Thanks!

Those are my favourites too. Sylla and Amyitis are still on my shelf of shame but will eventually get reviews.

I have Caylus, and I picked up Amyitis and its expansion recently for a tenner. I enjoy developing on a shared board and benefitting from the irrigation that others have done. The cards and caravan are also pretty tight!

Hello Chairman, do you know if this Kailua, not the 1303, is available anywhere? Thank you

You should be able to find it on the secondary market fairly easily

Caylus is one of the few 10/10s for me - another WP game that is as good as this for me is Anachrony vom Mindclash
