Amsterdam is nice but you need to do it on your own pace (in my case slow 😅). In the morning having breakfast (hotel or else) and around 10 o'clock visit a museum that you have interest in by reading up on the things on display. Then around lunch (two hours in a museum is all I can take!) have a sandwich or pastry with a big coffee or orange juice (or both). Look at the map and figure what direction you want to "investigate". This is my modus operandi every city trip. Museum, lunch, bonus walk with hidden gems? For me it works 🤠
I am glad I visited Amsterdam thanks to my parents in 2018. And especially in cloudy weather. It was not that crowded but main street and so dang cozy. It's our family's favourite destination. Renting bikes, having rides to nice small neighborhoods and parks is so magnificent. It's sad that nowadays great cities are overflooded with tourism and it worsens the whole experience
getting out of the very center is definitely key, I agree tho the city is so beautiful but as someone that worked there briefly the crowds get annoying very quickly. Theres not really a time of year when its not busy, I guess its to be expected when its the capital and a tourism hot spot. But finding unique spots outside the center was also something I enjoyed doing. De 9 Straatjes is a nice spot to walk as well.
Once you get away from the Centraal station and the streams of tourists, it's a much better city. I like to visit the W139 gallery, San Seriffe, then Spui for more bookshops but there are some great places to visit further out too.
If someone took me to see Amsterdam and only showed me the city center, I'd probably never return, it's a good city but a bit too crazy for the amount of people that actually live there.

I wouldn't call Cheese Museum and Tony's as hidden gems though, they're very touristic and are in almost any visit lists about Amsterdam :) I do recommend you coming completely off the centre, Oud-West and Pijp are less tourist trap and more awesome places to eat and do. Also since Netherlands is small country, just go outside on a train! The Hague, Utrecht, Rotterdam are big and interesting cities with much less tourists but still lots of amazing experience. And Haarlem essentially mini-Amsterdam with tiny preserved houses in centre and some super-wealthy neighborhoods. Good luck and come again!
Ah, you visited even more tourist traps for your hidden gem. Except for Kattenkabinet. And maybe Van Stapele. Try visiting Kapitein Zeppos, de Ceuvel, NDSM Werf, NEMO, Cafe Checkpoint Charlie, de Poezenboot... I could go on and on and on.
Not many places in NY are that foot traffic friendly. I liked Amsterdam, like parts of Tokyo, with nicer/quirky-er architechture. and its much more flatter, walkable and compact. but if you think Amsterdam is crowded, you'll have a much harder time in Tokyo.
Zaandam, the town with the quirky hotel, is very nice looking and it's surely worth a visit. And then, 2 train stops further, there is Zaanse Schans, with beautiful windmills and lovely houses, some of them on canals. It's almost like a fairy tale place!
Erika come visit Delft!! I am a big fan and would love to show you around. Maybe you can go on yourself if you think its weird xD, but come visit Delft

I visited Amsterdam during the pandemic, so I got to see it when it wasn't particularly crowded. And it was in November, when the Netherlands has some absolutely stunning fall color, which made it that much more beautiful. I spent a week in Amsterdam, and two weeks in The Netherlands overall (I also visited The Hague, Leiden, and Delft.) In terms of things to see and do and meeting really nice people, it's probably my favorite city in Europe now (although it's a toss up between Amsterdam and Strasbourg, to be honest) - I even like it better than Paris! And as for food in Amsterdam, Pannenkoeken during the day and Indonesian food in the evening were my go-tos. Delicious!
At least it wasn't cat-astrophic. My first time in Netherlands last year, locals were urging me to visit Rotterdam, so I'll check it out this year. Otherwise, those little leaves were too cute!
That cheese “museum” looked awfully like a cheese shop that decided it would get more visitors if it called itself a “museum” instead. Which is honestly not a bad idea. I’ve been to shops with enough interesting merchandise that they might as well be museums, with the added bonus that if you really like something you can buy it and take it home.
I wasn't going to try that cookie on my next trip because Murat from Follow my Travels said he wouln't wait in the long line for it, so i assumed it was just OK. But after your review I cant wait to try it
I live in Amsterdam and some parts of the city center are absolutly horrible. But I still think Amsterdam is a great city. To get a good view of the city you should go out of the city center. There are still a lot of beautiful historical buildings there and it is way less crowded. If you want yo stay in the city center though. I feel like the eastern part of the city center is less touristy. I would suggest to visit Artis and the Hortus botanicus and just that general area. It is very green there. There are also two amazing museums right next to Artis that not many people know about.

If you are looking for an echo chamber, I am the right comment. I am a New Yorker and staying in Amsterdam seems like if I were forced to stay in Times Square. Ugh, no thanks. Yes, there is legitimate amazing stuff to do and see in Amsterdam, but it was the low point of my vacation there. Zanse Schaans (epitome of tourist trap), Miuderslot, Haarlem, Den Bosch, and Efteling were so much more "real" and fun. Also, the entire country is roughly the same size as the New York metropolitan area.
wait they removed the cafe?? bc when i went there last time both the cafe and the shop were open (and there was no row for the shop at all, which was great) i made a milk chocolat with salt (and other things i think but i really wanted sweet and salty and usuallly tthey combine salt with dark chocolat isntead of milk)

Imagine you have to commute for an hour in heavy traffic every day. Imagine you get 2 weeks off a year. Now take a trip to amsterdam. Its all about perspective.
Amsterdam used to be a nice and interesting old Dutch city. But because large numbers of people have it on their bucket list, it's completely ruined. I stopped visiting Amsterdam years ago and live 25 miles away because I was yelled at by idiotic tourists who think they have some godforsaken right to be there.
We went a couple months ago and went to the street markets and had the best more affordable food parking was 50 euros plus another 30 diffrent spot and we got honked at a lot for letting people walk by 🤣 not a fan
Ya, don't do Amsterdam, or any big city really, with a car. Park the car on the outside at P+R parkings, 6e, and take the tram or train or metro to Central Station.
i grew up in Amsterdam. The city is INSANELY overrated. Even if we remove all the tourists and muslims immigrants, it would be still insanely chaotic and overrated. It pains me to say but Utrecht has 1,000% more character than Amsterdam.
@@solarrockstarin the big cities, yes. I was in Belgium 2 weeks ago and in Brussels, basically 70% of people are non-Belgian. In my homecountry Austria, we already have whole schools in our capital city with 99% non-Austrian kids. Europeans just aren't having enough kids themselves any more.
