As someone who uses these same shoes for hiking as opposed to running; I have gone completely over to Topo because the midsole last almost twice as long in the most recent versions. If you have a shoe rotation, Altra is a great shoe...but if you're using the same shoe for 15-20 miles a day every day for a couple of weeks, well, the ego midsole goes flat and stops bouncing back (in my experience). Several of the thru-hiker TH-cam channels seem to be reaching the same conclusion, Altra just doesn't last as long as they use to and Topo seems to be a fantastic alternative.
I think your comment is most likely right on. I personally have not had as much of an issue with Altras midsoles going flat. However, I do rotate a shoes a lot and the midsoles on my Altras have more time to bounce back between uses. I am glad we have Topo as an alternative as well. I have really only become familiar with them this past year. I prefer the Topo Vibram Mega grip outsoles to most of the Altras.
Thanks for this. I always prefer Vibram soles but to be honest I'm definitely leaning towards the Lone Peaks. I hate it when companies put in excessive arch support as if everyone wants or needs it! It's something that's easy to add with aftermarket innersoles but an arch that's built into the shoe you can't take away.
I understand your thoughts. I usually have no issue with the arch support in the Topo's, however I did have a pair where the arch support hit in the wrong part of my foot. I also prefer Vibram outsoles. However, the max trac outsole on the Torin 7 was improved from previous versions and seems pretty good to me.
I also have both shoes. The LP is a comfort runner, Terraventure a fast runner. Topo's are quite a bit more firm and have a little arch support. Altra's wear quicker but can also be purchased for less. Both have good toe splay, so important!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on these two shoes. They both work pretty well for me in most all trail conditions. I do tend to lean more to the Terraventure on more technical terrain, just due to those big Vibram Mega grip lugs
Thank you, Tom! I am on my 4th or 5th pair of Lone Peaks. They have definitely been my go to trail shoe. I do really enjoy the Terraventures now. Not sure which shoes are my favorite now, glad I don't have to decide.😀
Hello Jay, and thanks for the review! How would you compare the sizing for these two shoes? I'm an 11.5 in Altra Lone Peaks. Would you recommend the same size for Terraventure 4 or should I go up half a size? I love the LPs but I'm looking for a similar shoe with a tread that will last longer. These Topos with the Vibram tread may fit the bill.

You are right about the Ego midsole foam. It is mushy and it wears out quickly!

Just tried on a pair of Lone Peak 8s and Topo Teraventure 4...I liked the feel of the lone peaks better
Then that should be the shoe for you!!! How they feel is probably most important. Thank you for watching!!!
Thanks for the review, Jay! I bought some lone peaks yesterday, and I can’t wait to try them out on the trails!
I hope you enjoy them! I think they are really good shoes. Congrats on your great race at Snowdrop, it was fun seeing you!!!
Thanks! Great seeing you too!
Excellent info, Jay. They both look like decent choices. I must try the lone peak one day. They seem like a classic.
Thank you for watching, Mark!
If you don't mind the zero drop, the lone peak is a good shoe.

Tough decision between two very good choices.
Yes, I think they are both good shoes.

Nice work Jay.
LP are my OG's...The Terraventure 4 is a very close second.
Thank you, Tom!

@@TheOldUltraRunner Thanks! Good to know!
My 10k run i mostly do is 50/50 road, gravel, trail. Is the topo good for this?
Yes, I think they would be good. I also own the Topo MT-5. I would choose it just because of less aggressive lugs
@@TheOldUltraRunner ok, thanks
Thx!
