One of their best albums. Definitely the most consistent. 5 of the 8 tracks are classics while the other 3 are very good. Only thing that keeps it from being my favorite is the lack of an epic on it.
Life is not a sprint. The long game is full of peaks and valleys…the marathon of life. Another example of Rush portraying such positive uplifting music and message… delivered with killer musicianship skills on display.
Another great song and great reaction - you got the meaning just fine.. 😃 For me Neil laid out his personal credo in these lyrics. I don't know of anyone who was as passionate about living life to the fullest as he was. Everyday he would ask himself, "What is the most awesome thing I can do today?" (Something always fires that light that gets in your eyes). Geddy says Neil was only given months to live by the doctor but through shear will lived for 3 more years. Please check out DIGITAL MAN 🙏 You'll love the bass work!
You really don't need any help with the lyrics. Your interpretations are usually spot-on, notwithstanding your likely focus on the music. So, here's a quote for you from the Wikipedia page for this song: "In a 1986 interview, Peart said "(Marathon) is about the triumph of time and a kind of message to myself (because I think life is too short for all the things that I want to do), there's a self-admonition saying that life is long enough. You can do a lot -- just don't burn yourself out too fast trying to do everything at once. "Marathon" is a song about individual goals and trying to achieve them. And it's also about the old Chinese proverb: 'The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step." PS - I just watched a documentary in which someone who worked with Rush for years as production engineer marveled at the dact that Geddy was the only bassist he knew that regularly broke his strings when performing in concerts.
Think of it like this…”Something always fires the light that gets in your eyes”….YOU fired the light that got in that young man’s eyes. That’s what this song is saying. We are all on our journey, but we are not independent of each other. We learn, we grow, we inspire, we are inspired. But in order to do this, “First you need endurance, first you’ve got to last.”
Just loving watching your Rush journey! Appreciate your insights as an obviously trained musician and being curious about Rush’s music and lyricism. If I may be so bold to recommend a song, which I’ve never done on any Rush reax channel before, I think the opener of the live concert A Show of Hands is a great example of Rush’s musicianship and personality (on and off stage). The song is called ‘Big Money’. Enjoy and keep up the great Rush videos!
Hey thank you so much for playing my request ❤ Means a lot. The 2nd verse is my favorite. Too bad he does not loop it like he does on the 1st verse. This album and the previous one is when they used a lot of synths.
Another great reaction. and since you play the bass, I recommend 2 RUSH songs that have a wonderful bass... More than how wonderful it always is and they are "Freewill" from the album "Permanent waves" and "Red Barchetta" from the album "Moving pictures". again great reaction.
Here's a live performance of Marathon from 2011 = 26 years after this came out, and 4 years before their retirement. Watch the boys knock it out of the park, as usual, againl.. th-cam.com/video/EqdWa_Iip4Y/w-d-xo.htmlsi=uuh6sAD54O7Zqwce
Marathon is a song about the power of endurance - The entire album was written around the theme of power … The power of money 💰 in the song “The Big Money” and the power of atomic weapons in “Manhattan Project”
Really, really glad you dove into 'Marathon' ! It has a very distinctive groove to it. fun, fairly challenging and entertaining. Percussive, bass rifty nifty! Theme? I see it as pace yourself, enjoy, be good, make a mark, keep reaching! Don't get full of yourself.
So many cool bass riffs. Malignant Narcissism came about when he was messing around with a frettless bass. Animate, Turn the Page, and Headlong Flight are a few more you should check out. Pretty bad a$$ riffs. Take care ✌️
One of Neil's biggest life tenets was: Life is not a destination, it's a journey. No one gets out alive, enjoy it while you have it. Like a Marathon. You keep moving forward.
Something always fires the light that gets in your eyes to me has always meant that you're going to have things get in your way and derail you, but you just have to stay the course. It's not about the glory of a moment but the journey itself. I may have said this before but if you want to appreciate Geddy on the bass you really must listen to Freewill, the studio version and pay attention to how he is going off under the guitar solo. I have a feeling you won't love the lyrics, but I think you will love the musicality. Love your reactions!
Hey CB ,love to get your take on 80s hit Some Like It Hot by Power Station..basically a super group of it's time .but late ex Chic drummer Tony Thompson is just FIRE with this group..God Bless
Loving your Rush journey brother! If I can make a fun suggestion, a reaction to one of their documentaries. And if a song request, By-Tor And The Snow Dog.
I’m not a bass player but I am a lifelong RUSH fan that knows a whole lot about all 3 members of Rush and Geddys favorite bass strings are Rotosound brand. At least in the later years of RUSH. This song is from the album Power Windows. This was the peak of 80’s Rush. It’s fabulous but I think every RUSH album is fabulous!!
For a completely different sound, I'd like you to hear a few tracks off Clockwork Angels, which were composed to accomodate how Geddy's voice changed as he grew older, producing a deeper, richer sound; Headlong Flight in particular has a killer bass line. Cheers from Toronto! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🐐 🐐 🐐
You talk about Geddy having fresh strings. You're on the money there. Back when I was touring on a regular basis, I had an endorsement deal with D'addario Strings and would place orders with my rep a few weeks before we hit the road. We would be out 6 to 10 weeks sometimes twice a year, mostly overseas in Europe. I would change every other show. Our sets wouldn't be more than 50 minutes to an hour so they still had some bite by the 2nd show. Regardless, my tech changed them out even if they sounded crisp and bright. On the level Rush played, you can bet he and Alex both had fresh sets on their rigs every show; and I'm sure, multiple times a day when they were in the studio. Definitely can't beat a good endorsement deal!
LOVE 2 U!!! :) “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” ~ Romans 15:13
The meaning of this song is pretty simple. Neil is comparing running a marathon and the strategy therein to the marathon of life. Other than that, you got the meaning pretty darn close.
I can't pick a favorite RUSh album, but this one is right up there, some of Neil's best lyrics. My take on the message is life is a journey. To paraphrase a Neil quote how could anyone possibly be bored on this planet? Alex is the most unique soloist and my favorite. BTW, great advice about college. It's not for everybody. Unfortunately, I think there are places that require a college degree for jobs that don't need one.
Good observation, he does use fresh strings daily. Geddy perfected his double finger plucking technique over the years. It turned into a flamingo technique. Next song , The Main Monkey Business, there last instrumental.
No, you got it for the most part. I see it as a description of people who are driven. The light that gets in your eyes, is the one thing that sparks your passion to work hard and achieve your goals. One moment's high, is that long awaited gratification that makes all the hard work, worth it. And yes, it's not the goal itself, but what you become, through the journey.
I just love your reactions, sir! Geddy's bass on this recording is a long-scale Wal MK1. Wal basses have an extremely unique sound, are rare and usually fairly to quite expensive. Small company in England with a fascinating history. Bright and clear recording was a big thing with producers at that time, most likely influenced by jazz fusion peaking as a genre. A key element to Geddy's sound is the strings...Rotosound Superwound Funkmasters at .030, .050, .070, .090. Really thin strings, more like piano strings in a way. Strings for live performances were changed every two shows, sprayed heavily with Finger-Ease and wiped down with a dry towel before stringing. Opening part is B-F#-B, E-B-E in ascending octaves. First verse bass riff starts on 2nd fret of D string (E), then down to B, octave up to B, then 2nd fret G string (A) twice, F#, then B. You'll get it. It's basically an augmented triplet with ghost note effects, once you get it it's fun as hell to play. Third verse bass riff adds more notes in the box with two sets of Geddy triplets. "It's more than just survival..." part is B-D-(D-E-D-E)-G-A-B, going into chorus add -G-A Chorus is B-E-F#-F#-E-G#-A#-B, (played on synth on recording) Bridge transition before guitar solo - Open string D, D-D-D-E-F#---D-D-E-D-E-F# variation D-D-D-E-F#-D-A-E-D-E-F#, then Open string A, A-A-A-B-B-A-A-A-B-A-B-A Guitar solo goes from B to E back and forth (synth), with an accent of B-B-B-A-B-A-B I've always thought that the root meaning of this song centers around: One moment's high And glory rolls on by Like a streak of lightning That flashes and fades In the summer sky For all the hard work to reach a goal, the moments of glory, the good times, the special moments, those are very short and small. Fleeting. Life isn't a constant stream of awesomeness, it's a parabola of crazy shit. I've tried to look at it from Neil's perspective and the fact that he loved playing, but hated touring. All the travel and down time and boredom and loneliness for a few moments of richly deserved applause at the end of the show for a good night's work, then back to the touring grind. The awesome little payoff moments that just seem to flash on by in life are so fulfilling, but...making it through rest of the shit? THAT'S the marathon.
Love hearing your input with you playing your bass during these reviews!! Nice to hear - and see you play - Your artist's angle on these! Keep on playin!!
Churchboy has lost me. For some reason, people keep recommending all of RUSH's most obscure songs for him and he is missing almost all of their greatest music. Later.
Hey just to let you know Geddy and Alex both play Keyboards with their feet... when your discussing the bass is different at the intro and choruses it's because Geddy's playing Bass pedals with his feet and keyboards with his hands as much of that is seen on live stage performances Playing Guitars and pedals and keyboards ........when ever the bass is not rolling along there is bass pedal playing i think you may of seen La Villa Strangiato always check out for feet movement whilst their playing guitar especially at the start here where Alex is playing guitar and pedals simlutaniously it's not unusual thats why it sounds like there are 4 or 5 musicians playing...... Hey keep up the good work RUSH rocks
during this tour, they had a big display with lasers going during this song...at the San Diego Sports Arena, they had a power failure while playing this song...we sat in the dark for a couple minutes...
So glad you finally listened to some tracks from Power Windows! Marathon, the song, represents the "Power of Determination". Each track on power windows is a reflection of a type of power. Territories, your previous reaction, represents the "Power of Nationalism". The Big Money, Represents the "Power of Wealth". My personal favorite, Middletown Dreams, the "Power of Dreams". I hope you'll enjoy the rest of this album in the future! If your looking for something in their catalog that has more of a funk inspiration, check out roll the bones. BTW, love the Zelda shirt!!
The song is literally about running in a marathon.. the mental / physical strength and endurance it takes to the finish line.. I met geddy Lee in the 90s at a synthesizer store called saved by technology
@@philsmith2444 Yes. You are correct. He would step in from time to time across those albums to perform a solo. But he was in no way as integrated into their overall sound during this time. Started to change during Presto and Roll The Bones and from counterparts on they sounded like an integrated trio again. IMHO.

Power Windows was a great album, and there are actually some great songs somewhere underneath those layers of samples, sequences and sweeping keyboard textures. I think they went overboard on the production on this and Hold Your Fire, but the ripping and shredding was always there, so I bought every album anyway! Lol..
On this album Power Windows I love every song also the following album Hold Your Fire (Yes I love when they went synth heavy after the 70's they still had Alex Lifeson awesome guitaring and Geddy Lee's Bass- Comparing Life to running a Marathon
My Favorite Rush song followed by Turn The Page,Prime Mover,Second Nature, and on 1997 Test for Echo the song The Color of Right Rush songs with Neil Peart always made you think. Here's another band with great messages and awesome drummer and bassist here's a recent Live song even though they have many with bass solos from both original Founder/Bassist like her idol Steve Harris of Iron Maiden the cover of Eagle Fly Free showcases everyone drummer bassist and both guitarists and Hammer of Wrath (where they chant Bring Down Justice to the wicked) Fami the new bassist gets here moment to shine 3 seperate times 1 after the guitars have their solos/duet. as you approach your goal, even achieve it, the goalpost moves. think Jordan/Brady. the first Championship seems impossible. thereafter they become more attainable.
Thanks again for another Rush reaction. Time to move from the okay Rush songs to the Great Rush songs. Here are a few suggestions: - Freewill - Jacobs Ladder - Analog Kid - Digital Man - Red Barchetta - Between the Wheels - Afterimage - 2112 - Anthem - Bytor and the Snowdog - Ghost of a Chance
Awesome react! One could tell how emotionally impacted you got from the great music. And you know your shit. :) Greetings from Norway - across the pond. I saw Rush live twice in my life. I'm ok with that.
Marathon mid-song ish talks about moments of accomplishment when you feel "glorified" that go by "like a flash of lightning" because guess what? The rest of life is still ahead of you. Tension between this glory moment and the potential next. The Glory of God is a human being fully alive! These Rush guys, each one, are so alive when they play together! Glory to God for such talent!
CB, I love the song called "Between the Wheels" by Rush! It's from 1984's "Grace Under Pressure" album. It's more dark, heavy, and "industrial"-sounding but when they break into the chorus, it is magic and the song soars! Very intense, and Alex crushes on it!
Baby, you gotta watch the documentaries. My favorite is beyond the lighted stage which is from the song limelight. I think you’ll really enjoy them. I’m enjoying you don’t change be you your fun. I enjoy you immensely.
Read Geddys Book of Bass Read Geddys My Effin Life Check the interview where Alex is interviewing Geddy on his book My Effin Life. The Effin Life interview tells the history of Rush starting with the first day Alex and Geddy met in the 7th grade and when Geddy actually got kicked out of Rush... Keep up the amazing reactions. You are so dope!!
I love this song and album. Some Rush fans say it's way too synthy, but I think there's still plenty of room for Alex to shine
Many people didn't get it but I loved the Power Windows album.
One of my top 5!!
yeah top 5 too, love it.
My #1
One of their best albums. Definitely the most consistent. 5 of the 8 tracks are classics while the other 3 are very good.
Only thing that keeps it from being my favorite is the lack of an epic on it.
Power Windows is definitely a favorite of mine!!! Love what you love 💕 and let the opinions roll off your back!! Be like a duck 🦆
Life is not a sprint. The long game is full of peaks and valleys…the marathon of life. Another example of Rush portraying such positive uplifting music and message… delivered with killer musicianship skills on display.
middletown dreams is a great one from the same album.🎸🥁🎸
Please, its enough of Power Windows already.
My favorite
Turn The Page is a bass masterclass
Enjoyed the story at the end, thx. I'll keep saying it, you need to hear the bass line from Digital Man.

unreal solo by all 3
Try Dreamline

RUSH THE ENEMY WITHIN!!!!!!!!
Lots of good bass in The Enemy Within!
And he's playing that bass line WHILE singing :)
The song is about life... life is a marathon, not a sprint. Just keep going!
And on stage playing the synth parts with foot pedals. 😊
Please don't interrupt a Rush fade-out.
I'm a Rush fan of 47 years and I adore all they have done! Thanks Church Boy your on the Propper Wavelength fantastic 😊
44 years for me...
You really don't need any help with the lyrics. Your interpretations are usually spot-on, notwithstanding your likely focus on the music.
So, here's a quote for you from the Wikipedia page for this song:

It has a very distinctive groove to it. fun, fairly challenging and entertaining. Percussive, bass rifty nifty!
Theme? I see it as pace yourself, enjoy, be good, make a mark, keep reaching! Don't get full of yourself.
Another great bassline from Geddy is on the song “Scars”.
Scars is actually a keyboard bass…
@@nickavenoso7851 , really?!! Hah!! Didn't know that. Still a great line, though.
... and a sequencer.
Dude! You HAVE to get to Digital Man song. May be Ged's best song as far as basslines. From the Signals album. Same album as Subdivisions.
There are videos about RUSH Isolated Bass tracks.
So many cool bass riffs. Malignant Narcissism came about when he was messing around with a frettless bass. Animate, Turn the Page, and Headlong Flight are a few more you should check out. Pretty bad a$$ riffs.

Brilliant album...❤
for every songu react do also the live virsion
The live version from Show of hands has very good closeups on how he plays it.
Thanks for the RUSH reactions!! Great workout tune!
The bass work in Headlong Flight is one of Geddy’s best and craziest overall performances.🔥🙏

Turn the Page has awesome bass lines.
That whole Hold Your Fire album is their masterpiece. Phenomenal music.
You'll like "Time Stands Still" and "Camera Eye" too. Both for different reasons.

"It's more than just survival..." part is B-D-(D-E-D-E)-G-A-B, going into chorus add -G-A
Chorus is B-E-F#-F#-E-G#-A#-B, (played on synth on recording)

Guitar solo goes from B to E back and forth (synth), with an accent of B-B-B-A-B-A-B
I've always thought that the root meaning of this song centers around:

The song is literally about running in a marathon.. the mental / physical strength and endurance it takes to the finish line.. I met geddy Lee in the 90s at a synthesizer store called saved by technology
Once again. Pretty obviously about Life. Specifically, the length of it. Ie: Marathon, meaning long run.....
ANIMATE!!!
Suggestion again, Headlong Flight live from Clockwork Angels tour.
amazing extra info mate! ENORMOUS track! ✌
All three of them shine here. This is probably one of my top five tracks of Rush. If i actually had any!
Primus.
No one really gives Alex the credit due to him, for being able to solo over such odd time signatures! That's a tremendous talent!
Please listen to RUSH Digital Man and Alien Shore for AWESOME bass lines
Try the band TRIUMPH their another 3 pc from Canada.
Fight the good fight
On that same record....Big Money, Middletown dream and territories have amazing bass work. Check 'em out bro !!!!
Watch Harry nilsson. Touch of schmilson in the night...
Loving watching your Rush journey! Strap in. The rabbit hole will get deeper!
My favorite band. My older sis runs marathons...
I recommend live or official version to get meaning.
it was comparing living life to running a Marathon consider a Marathon Runner in the Lyrics
From Power Windows. This and Hold Your Fire were the peak of their synth period. Alex all but disappeared.
No way! These 2 albums have some of his most unhinged, La Villa Strangiato-level solos on them.
@@philsmith2444 Yes. You are correct. He would step in from time to time across those albums to perform a solo. But he was in no way as integrated into their overall sound during this time. Started to change during Presto and Roll The Bones and from counterparts on they sounded like an integrated trio again. IMHO.
I'm in agreeance with the band that they achieved a better balance between the keys and the guitar on PoW. That's one of their peaks period.
Thanks for your reviews !!! You will love The Weapon from the Signal album. Try the 1984 live remastered. :)

Lovebites Rising th-cam.com/video/EHcu-zES3-k/w-d-xo.html (Inspiring Lyrics)
as you approach your goal, even achieve it, the goalpost moves. think Jordan/Brady. the first Championship seems impossible. thereafter they become more attainable.
The song means don't RUSH life, but keep trying to improve and stay inspired.
Thanks again for another Rush reaction. Time to move from the okay Rush songs to the Great Rush songs.
Here are a few suggestions:
- Freewill
- Jacobs Ladder
- Analog Kid
- Digital Man
- Red Barchetta
- Between the Wheels
- Afterimage
- 2112
- Anthem
- Bytor and the Snowdog
- Ghost of a Chance
That is his Wal Bass phase. It has a ton of punch to it.
He's had Rickenbacker, Fender Jazz, Steinberger, Wal bass phases.
Do the Necromancer next, it is criminally under rated! Loving your reactions, good sir!
Bro, in my mind, you NEVER 'butcher' it. Especially that it's your 1st time hearing and then playing it from sound. It's pretty amazing 👏 Love it!!
Awesome react! One could tell how emotionally impacted you got from the great music. And you know your shit. :)
Greetings from Norway - across the pond.
🤗 More Rush! Cool Beans! 🙋🏿♀️ We're all still waiting for YYZ Live in Rio'. 😊 It's okay to do it 2x cause Rush Fans won't mind! 😁🥰🐰
Read Geddys Book of Bass
Read Geddys My Effin Life
Check the interview where Alex is interviewing Geddy on his book My Effin Life.
The Effin Life interview tells the history of Rush starting with the first day Alex and Geddy met in the 7th grade and when Geddy actually got kicked out of Rush... Keep up the amazing reactions. You are so dope!!
