yep, performance hit is noticeable on everything i threw at it -- and if it wasn't hugely apparent there, it was absolutely apparent in reduced battery life.
Would using supersampling mode improve like the Movie theaters modes greatly without any problems or would it still have the occasional stutters, Etc.. like playing games?
It's so weird. Supersampling on a regular flat screen basically just smooths edges, as you're going above your intended native panel resolution... but for some reason with VR this has a very different effect. At least in the Quest series. It actually makes the image sharper, instead of just ''less-jagged''. Kind of like the regular resolutions being non-native and supersampling actually bringing it up closer to native resolution. I need to read up on this.
Enjoyed the tips, have been playing with Oculus Mirror's many settings for capturing quest 2 footage in 4k. I was wondering about capturing Quest 2 Exclusive gameplay - non link games - does this .bat work with Quest 2? or just standard Quest 1?? Thank you for the information and video.

wait so it isn't super slow supersampled to 2.0?! what. my 1080 struggles with this! but also developers can change the resolution at will, why did they all opt for lower res if the quest is stable at higher? surprising...
In many games there will be some reprojection or frame drops at 2.0, but its still fully playable and looks like night and day in my opinion. Especially games like Apex Construct. I think Oculus has some strict rules on games not having any framedrops so thats why developers had to lower the resolution quite a lot.
@@SweViver Yes that sounds like them... What I think? It works well enough that I think it's a damn shame that one can't enable this from inside the headset. Connecting it to my PC every time I want to do something where I can use it (e.g. watch 3D movies) is way too annoying. And SideQuest's experimental wireless feature unfortunately doesn't work for me.
For those saying it isn't working for them: I found that running a desired command and then letting the Oculus enter rest mode applied the necessary changes. Hopefully this can help anyone.
Nope - i think what the engineers at Oculus (i.e. John Carmack et al) made the right choice in making the system work optimally with the default settings. Yes, that higher resolution does look nice in Home (where there is not much to stress the GPU), but in every single high-interactivity scene within apps anything beyond the default either makes the tracking stutter or reduces the framerate. On top of this, even in Apex Construct which you demo here, I ended up getting hugely reduced battery life at your suggested 2048 resolution. It's just not worth it to me, thanks for the suggestion though, it was a good experiment!
If my quest doesnt show up like yours does, could advise why it wouldn't? Also when I go to devices, it shows my quest there. Any help would be amazing
Yeah it looks better as a still image but closely watch the game play and you can see the frame rate stutters. That totally kills it. The Quest is already maxed out as it is. Anything that is not at the default settings is not smooty when it comes to frame rate period. without being a stuttery mess. What all these videos on increasing the resolution for the Oculus Quest don’t show or tell you is doesn’t look good because the frame rate gets messed up when you up the res beyond the default.

Sure, you could make it run at 4x as well... you know, if you like playing stuff at 4fps. Anywho I'll take a low resolution image in exchange for smoother performance and less heat any day of the week. Also, it needs to be said, the games on the Quest generally look great, way beyond what you'd expect to get out of a mobile headset of this class. People complaining about graphics on the Quest are just assholes that literally don't understand the amazing tech they have strapped to their head.
Rod Munch I haven’t got a quest yet but it sure looks promising. I can’t wait to see future iterations. It’s kind of the switch of vr, hopefully this can help increasing the install base of vr
I disagree, there’s nothing wrong with experimenting. Some apps will run better than others. For me I’m fine with the 1024x1024 for processor intensive games developed specifically for the quest. Don’t forget, there’s side loaded apps as well that could run fine with the increased settings.

I have used the 2048x to play echo VR and the difference is impressive, some stuttering in speicifc moments but i definitively prefer to play with the enhanced resolution
It is indeed much better! We rediscover the games. BUT, Warning, it makes crash some games like Robo Recall. For now, only the upscaling X1.5 passes correctly.
I guess this is texture size changing and not true supersampling, because there is no difference whatsoever on the GUI in the home screen, only on the background textures. Or have I misunderstood something?
It's supersampling, only in-game the supersampling will happen not on the homescreen. You can actually change texture sizes that are used for games within the Sideload application in the settings
@@datboisunny3642 It is only the texture size that is affected, the background in the home screen is for example affected whereas the GUI is not. Supersampling is rendering the whole image at a much higher resolution than the one being displayed, then shrinking it to the desired size, from what I have learned. But a nice feature nevertheless :)
@@xenovator Well i've tried it in the quest, it's definitely supersampling because literally everything is affected even the UI will become clear if I chose the highest quality as a test (same as if I put a very low size makes everything ingame look blurry). Maybe try it again (before loading up a game since it will only activate before opening an app) and see for yourself
@@datboisunny3642 If you look at the "Device settings and tools" tab in SideQuest it says: "Default texture size - This will change how high quality some of the in game textures are rendered at." It doesn't affect the GUI on the home screen for example, and not all in game textures, so not true supersampling. But as said, a nice feature nevertheless, but many games get low frame rates and stuttering unfortunately.
xenovator The texture size option in Sideload isn't what I claimed that supersamples games since that's for changing texture sizes only, I was referring to the .bat file that's used near the end of the video for supersampling
It works well. Thanks for that. I have played echo in 2048x and it was amazing. Got some stuttering when a goal is scored but much better overall experience.
I got the same problem and is using windows 8.1. Eventually I found a solution in the comment sections in the credited video. You can try download an older version of the SDK platform tool (r28.0.1 instead of r29.0.0) and it will work. I found the older version in this link 0rz.tw/QhXGA (it's in chinese but you you should be able to find the download link)
Great video. Is it better to do this or use super sampling in SteamVR options? Is it a bad idea to super sample with both at same time? Thanks and keep up the great videos

The fact that not a single game (even the UI) runs at the advertised resolution (1440X1600 per eye) seems misleading? could they have just kept lower spec'd panels in the there?
Worked great! EDIT - this is a really nice enhancement for native Quest use, but I did find it strongly impacts performance on some Steam games streaming with ALVR - in particular, Blade & Sorcery.
There is some guy who took his Quest up to 4024 or something like that. He said he liked about 3200 or something like that for the most part. Since I am not a kid, I enjoy the highest resolution I can possibly get. I am having trouble finding that info again. If you can tell us, please do. You just don't want to run it at high levels for a long period of time. Maybe even add a heat sink...
cant get my pc to recognice quest. i tried the oculus cable to a usb c port on my mainboard (no reaction) and a usb-c to usb cable, reaction on pc as i hear a sound but quest does not show up as a device.
Yes, Quest not recognised as device on PC in developer mode. This is a bug. Look up SideQuest and follow clear installation steps from them. Then connect via SideQuest.
If there's ever gonna be a second Oculus Quest, they really should just combine the S and the Quest into one; a standalone capable device that can also be tethered OR connect via wifi to play in 'PC mode'. The Quest already does this via 3rd party. I dont mind if the 'Oculus 2' gets a price bump to 500-600 dollars if it means they actually try to make the best capable device into one. And keep the Quest as a budget version in the 300 price. Also they should just work together with Nvdia/AMD to make a custom SoC just like the Switch and the PS/Xbox consoles.
@unrepeatable raddish Yeah, but I want untethered and better graphics ;-) Quest is great for me, I love it....but always want something better. Still, can't wait for the next version.
sidequest app does it alot faster and easyer plug quest to pc sidequest app says quest detected go to setting click x2 sampling and level 4 gpu scale (you can also sideload quest apps with just drag and drop )and its ready on the fly..!!! no need to adb at all
zer0 id want to use the link cable to run games better and run the entire other catalogue of games you can’t run on the quest (it’s fine you can write better than some natives anyway
Im sure it improves ALL these games with more resolution and clarity. The question is if Quest can handle the higher resolution with smooth framerate...
Rift S doesn't need too. It's already more clear than the quest, and has better graphics as it comes from the pc, not the headset. You want less jaggies? turn on AA in your game lol
I hope someone will come up with a way to overclock it. Although I think 835 is already be pushed pretty hard. I wouldn't mind watching a video where someone is willing to sacrifice a unit to try 😅
i dont get it.. the quest is similar to a console in that they all run off identical hardware. so why is this not already applied per game by the individual game developers? wouldnt they want to get the absolute most out of the hardware for there game? assuming sweviver is right and the fps is not dropping/ reprojection only occuring in more demanding games. then that means some of these games are only half utilzing the hardware.... and given its running off a low performance mobile processor that seems plain silly. every game should be tuned to be running at 90-100% cpu/ gpu usage where possible. its the only reason lower performance console games manage to sometimes look as good as their pc counterparts. hardware optimization. and when all that hardware is identical... yeah. im just saying i dont get this...
It's new hardware. Even mainstream consoles like PS or Xbox usually are significantly underutilized at the beginning of their life cycle, and as experience with the environment / software increases, they are pushed a lot harder towards the end of their cycle. At this stage Oculus is probably being extremely cautious for a number of reasons: 1) Battery life is significantly reduced when you super sample. Imagine all the complaints they would be getting if their devices are running out of juice in less than an hour. 2) Reporjection is undesirable, and they don't want to risk it at all. 3) They do not want to run the risk of overheating.
I tried but it didn't work except the screenshot and reboot. Of course I tried to reboot the device but the same happened... I tried other options too... Sad :'(
it doesn't for for me neither. I've tried it several times. Reboot, next try and so on... The Powershell seems to do the commands but the resolution still is blurry, no SS. Any suggestions?

7 - press the button again after a few seconds (i usually wait 3 seconds)
8 - the resolution has changed.
I have used the 2048x to play echo VR and the difference is impressive, some stuttering in speicifc moments but i definitively prefer to play with the enhanced resolution
Diego Souza thank you
Well, time to go buy the Quest right now. Great video.
How do you extract
It is indeed much better! We rediscover the games. BUT, Warning, it makes crash some games like Robo Recall. For now, only the upscaling X1.5 passes correctly.
Quick question: 1) Does this impact the quality of just watching movies? 2) Does the setting stay as is after each use?
no and no
I guess this is texture size changing and not true supersampling, because there is no difference whatsoever on the GUI in the home screen, only on the background textures.
Wow that looks so much better!
Yep, amazing stuff. And you can go even higher - as long as the Quest can handle the framerate :)
It works well. Thanks for that.
I have played echo in 2048x and it was amazing. Got some stuttering when a goal is scored but much better overall experience.
hola intento descarga el questasm pero no me sale eso
I’ve downloaded it all but when I select the number it says invalid input?
Thanks for the tip - I just get an "adb.exe stopped working" windows system error each time I attempt to press 5... any ideas?
I got the same problem and is using windows 8.1. Eventually I found a solution in the comment sections in the credited video. You can try download an older version of the SDK platform tool (r28.0.1 instead of r29.0.0) and it will work. I found the older version in this link 0rz.tw/QhXGA (it's in chinese but you you should be able to find the download link)
Great video. Is it better to do this or use super sampling in SteamVR options? Is it a bad idea to super sample with both at same time? Thanks and keep up the great videos
I too would like to know
Hi SweViver, I am thinking of upgrading my HTC Vive is the Occulus Quest a good upgrade , love your videos, thanks
Cool, Moss looks beautiful with 2.048 😉
I'm using it at mo but haven't got moss at min ...any slow down in that setting . I have used moss on quest on the default before
Holy crap. Thats amazing. Going to try it now
It is, enjoy and let me know what you think :)
@@SweViver It doesn't work for me. I've followed this instructions exactly and I get this error. Do the develop tools need some sort of setup first?
adb shell setprop debug.oculus.textureHeight 2048

Super sampling puede dañar mis oculus.? Esto no realiza una especie de overclocking en el procesador.?
No, solo aumenta la resolución, lo que puede pasar es que los fps se reduzcan
can we use the .bat file in a mac ?

Yes apparently it works:
th-cam.com/video/dYDTK4I4QGk/w-d-xo.html
You can try my app. It's intended for sideloading (apk & obb) but it has streaming to Mac and a fixed 1.5 supersampling. Just one click. www.1geekarmy.com/OculusStandaloneUtils.html
@@SweViver not working on mac :/
@@richie_01 Thank you, Ricardo, your app is great. But after changing resolution by it Robo Recall and Moss stucks on the loading screen. Did you faced this issue?
I wonder how this works with the fixed foveated rendering option. Cool find!
Havent tried yet but it should work. Looks like doing SS at 2.0 removed Fixed Foveated Rendering but I will try if its possible to add it on top :)
At least the shot at 0:08 shows FFR is active on both settings, but it may be interacting poorly with a second sampling pass. The supersampled version looks jaggier in the periphery because of that. @@SweViver
@@0LoneTech wow thats true, I actually didnt notice that even while editing haha. You are totally right! :)
Hi All. Can this be done via a Mac as I have no PC??? Thanks.
Good choice ;)

HELP!!! questASM.bat WILL NOT DOWNLOAD WITH CHROME OR EDGE!!!!!!!!!!
did you ever manage to download the file?
Hi, great vid, so do you have to open that files and select the setting every time you boot the Quest?
Yes
does this till work now ??
I dont believe so - tried it a bunch of times - no change
How’s the lag?
The fact that not a single game (even the UI) runs at the advertised resolution (1440X1600 per eye) seems misleading? could they have just kept lower spec'd panels in the there?
No.. The SDE will be worse..
Worked great! EDIT - this is a really nice enhancement for native Quest use, but I did find it strongly impacts performance on some Steam games streaming with ALVR - in particular, Blade & Sorcery.
Once you have edited the super sampling, do you have to add it to the quest files
Try 8k then lmao
cant get my pc to recognice quest. i tried the oculus cable to a usb c port on my mainboard (no reaction) and a usb-c to usb cable, reaction on pc as i hear a sound but quest does not show up as a device.
Yes, Quest not recognised as device on PC in developer mode. This is a bug. Look up SideQuest and follow clear installation steps from them. Then connect via SideQuest.
@@georgepickup8020 thank you, problem solved 👍
Someone help I'm new to vr and I dont know if this will work on an ordinary laptop or just crash I dont have a nice pc only a laptop!
Laptop should be fine assuming it's not crazy old👍
No fps comparison? Can someone give me data
Now all we need a new quest revision with a sd855 cpu and a better designed headstrap. Then we can have this without framedrops.
Silentmelodies 👆🏻x2
@unrepeatable raddish Yeah, but I want untethered and better graphics ;-) Quest is great for me, I love it....but always want something better. Still, can't wait for the next version.
tack så mycket för hjälpen!
Frame rate suffers quite badly if you do this. I noticed it in some of the games in the video.
the file is not downloading
This works like a dream, thanks for the detailed instructions it made it very easy to get up and running. Thanks SweViver!
how mac user do.
hmm for me it doesnt change anything
I can't download QuestASM, can you help me please :'(
every time I hit 5 I get "error: no devices/emulators found"

@@birdsplaybs1234 Thanks for the reply. Not sure what the issue was, I ended up factory resetting the Quest and doing this again and it worked.

with me don t work..and i dont know why
sidequest app does it alot faster and easyer plug quest to pc sidequest app says quest detected go to setting click x2 sampling and level 4 gpu scale (you can also sideload quest apps with just drag and drop )and its ready on the fly..!!! no need to adb at all
I use Side quest and I never noticed this option. How do I activate it though after download?
RES or FPS, your choice :)
zer0 with the kink and a good pc do you think the frame rate could remain high

Vader Immortal, Robo recall?
Im sure it improves ALL these games with more resolution and clarity. The question is if Quest can handle the higher resolution with smooth framerate...
@@SweViver Could you try it? 😁
@@SweViver Robo Recall just stucks on the loading screen after resolution improving on my quest.
Rift s can ??
Rift S doesn't need too. It's already more clear than the quest, and has better graphics as it comes from the pc, not the headset. You want less jaggies? turn on AA in your game lol
I hope someone will come up with a way to overclock it. Although I think 835 is already be pushed pretty hard.

do you have to attach your oculus to laptop everytime you reboot to get this going
Yes it goes to default after a reboot. But skip reboot ming and it will work for many days :)
@@SweViver just dont turn it off
i dont get it.. the quest is similar to a console in that they all run off identical hardware. so why is this not already applied per game by the individual game developers? wouldnt they want to get the absolute most out of the hardware for there game? assuming sweviver is right and the fps is not dropping/ reprojection only occuring in more demanding games. then that means some of these games are only half utilzing the hardware.... and given its running off a low performance mobile processor that seems plain silly. every game should be tuned to be running at 90-100% cpu/ gpu usage where possible. its the only reason lower performance console games manage to sometimes look as good as their pc counterparts.
hardware optimization. and when all that hardware is identical... yeah. im just saying i dont get this...
It's new hardware. Even mainstream consoles like PS or Xbox usually are significantly underutilized at the beginning of their life cycle, and as experience with the environment / software increases, they are pushed a lot harder towards the end of their cycle. At this stage Oculus is probably being extremely cautious for a number of reasons:
1) Battery life is significantly reduced when you super sample.
Sad :'(
It happened to me once. Try again right after a reboot. It works, trust me!
Also do not wear the headset while applying the SS. Let it sit on the table meanwhile.
Make sure you don't have any other android devices connected to your PC.
Did you get it to work? Still not working for me, tried reboot multiple times after each setting. No changes.
it doesn't for for me neither. I've tried it several times. Reboot, next try and so on...
The Powershell seems to do the commands but the resolution still is blurry, no SS. Any suggestions?
