@@hughvane Thank you for the information, from what i've seen of the scammel is it's highly engineered & built tough, good british built machine built by proud people on the assembly line..it shows.
Ron, hi can you remember spraying the clutch plates with the fire extinguisher, was taught that at Borden. Stopped it sticking. My instructor made me learn to drive with out the clutch. Good job he did, had to drive from some where back to Lippstast when I picked up a " new one " . Then took it back the next day for repair . Loved driving it, made those German " Woofers " gravel lorries move out of the way. 😀!
Yes Ron, that and the old AEC, we were always recovering them .We had a Leyland Martin, I think that had the B81 engine as well Really slow ,always changing from one gear range to another. The crane was perfect, but I preferd the Scamel for towing .John .
My grandad used to drive one in that colour in Cyprus in 1963 when he was in reme but he was TA he towed a dyson trailer carrying a Fowler bulldozer and also recovered a compressor that toppled over and a series 2 Land Rover green jackets crashed into a riverine he also drove a pioneer with cloth doors 1939 one but it was a wreck and they left it on a mountain.
Has this been restored with the same Portland stone or light stone and markings? Never seen an explorer used in the milarty like this interesting to know more about her!
Those "boxes" that were pulled are Ex Army Stores Binner trailers...used to be fitted out with racks of Thomas Bins containing spare parts and nuts and bolts etc for the maint and repair of vehicles. LADs of the REME had them.
My dad used to have one of these for heavy recovery, but the guys who worked for him got annoyed with how long it took them to get places so he sold it :(
I don't know what that truck is but I want to drive it. Heck I don't know what ya'll are doing but it looks like fun and I want to join in. Keep it up!
Would you spend a whole day opening and closing it between driving around that location. Id just be more cautious anyway it didn’t get torn off sooo???
Just been watching some old training films about these tank recovery vehicles from the 2nd World War. Driving at speed over very uneven ground: Just amazing! th-cam.com/video/XvgkqdQvqq8/w-d-xo.html Watching how these beasts were used 'in anger' is quite something. Just think about taking the kids to school in THAT :-). All those mums in their 'Chelsea Tractors,' ? Totally up-staged!
Pure power the best looking heavy truck ever.
One of the nicest engineers vehicles ever devised.
Defiantly
Great Video of a beautiful truck!! Thanks
Pulling out wagons on idle..what a beast of a truck...Scammel engineered like no other.
Agreed
90% is in the gearing, but I cannot find exact info on what the reverse and 1st gear ratios were.

Brilliant, thanks for the support and we often put caravans in them and turn them into portable military show accommodation. Take care too

Scammell is some kinda truck,, are they still made for the British military??
No....all MAN Trucks and recovery vehicles now!
Not anymore they were in the 50's for the British reme for recovery mainly

Moving around with the side tool box lid down is asking for it to be torn off. Not good.

English is an ethnicity. Immigrants cannot be English by definition.
A monster truck!
Pieter Zwaan not really
Did anyone ever match a Scammell against a Diamond T?
Well the Diamond T has more pulling power on the tarmac but the scammell has much better off road recovery skills than the T
