girl i agree with you, reviewers have extra responbility because of the reach of their influence. so they can actually harm the community they belong to by saying people should absolutely not play a game, or trying to convince viewers that a game is 'bad'. otome is already a niche genre and making games is not easy so we should try to create a community that is fair and supportive
Exactly! Like it's ok to dislike a game, and if you are just talking to a friend then fair enough, go crazy! But if you have a public platform, it can really sway and make or break the dev/game/publisher. I think it's distasteful. I am glad to see that I'm not the only one that feels this way.
Another thing I like to keep in mind is the reviewer's track record with previous titles that I've played. If our tastes/opinions aligned in the past, I am more likely to put value in their opinion.
YES LULI, I couldn’t agree more with this! Those “Before You Play This” or “Why You Shouldn’t Play This” have annoyed me quite a bit in the past. Some game journalists or even reviewers have done harm to certain franchises and let their own political views/biases cloud their judgement and reviews of games. But the way you do reviews is one thing that initially drew me to your channel. You’re fair and considerate towards your audience when it comes to spoilers and how you present information about the games. You’ve introduced me to many including one, Piofiore, which would become one of my favorites. Great video as always ❤️.
Thank you Luna! I do try really hard to keep that as my format, it also fits me better as I feel a bit awkward being too negative about games, it just isn’t me 😭 Everyone seems to support me in some way or another with my views, which is a big relief to me as I really want people to understand that those type of videos with an underlying agenda can be so unbelievably harmful. It isn’t AS bad if it’s from a large scale company, but the thought of it happening to an indie dev, for example, really does break my heart. It’s kind of my way to hope it doesn’t happen in the future! Happy to hear that I was one of the reasons you came across your favourite otome, that means a lot to me 🥰
I agree 100%, and I think this is a problem that happens even outside of the realm of reviews, but how people express their opinions in general! I also feel so much the cultural part. I feel like nowadays there's a lot of people on the internet that fail to consider that their own country and upbringing is not the model for the rest of the world, and people's opinions and way to interpret certain topics vary for many reasons. Instead of accepting others might think differently, there's this strong wave of people trying to shame, change or silence those that don't agree. I don't think those type of reviews will ever stop sadly, so I guess it's good to know how to listen to any kind of review with care and know what's worth taking into consideration. The most important information in reviews is not wether the reviewer liked it or not, but WHY, and if it makes sense! A lot of times I feel like the reviewers have varying tastes for the kind of characters and routes they like, so sometimes there's people that might say "I don't like this character because he does XYZ" and I'm like "oh that's exactly what I'm looking for" :P
Definitely, and with otome being a genre that highly targets japanese audiences, there's bound to be a gap between how the majority of japanese audiences interpret the plot vs how a western audience may do so. I sometimes find that playing indie otome is a fresh breath of air due to the fact that the ones I play the devs are western and as someone who has now lived in the UK for over 10 years, I can relate nicely. There are some reviewers/YTbers who actively delete comments that disagree with them. It's so extreme! Thank you for your comment, it's always reassuring to know I'm not the only one that feels this way!
This topic came up on reddit over the weekend and one comment was like "with otome games i think it's best to figure out which reviewer's tastes align with your own" which is pretty good advice imo. Anyway i don't think you have to worry about your reviews coming off as discouraging anyone from playing a game lol. Like you give plenty of info where people can decide for themselves.
I saw that! And it was actually the last thing that pushed me into making this video haha It did make me feel better to see there were several who don’t just believe in one reviewer willy nilly though. Hopefully people don’t just dismiss Matsurika if it does get localised!
I agree :) Video games are a luxury, and can be quite expensive at that, so it's important to look at many different point of views so as to not waste money or miss out. It would be nice for every game to have a good demo that will help people to decide, but it's probably harder for VNs to do that. I liked you going blah blah btw :P
I honestly honestly honestly wished for that too! Like I can think of a handful that did this (at least in japan, maybe some in the west?) Like bustafellows, jack jeanne, gensou maneju, steam prison and utakata no uchronia, so I can’t help but wonder why other companies don’t do it? 🧐 Hehe glad it amused you 🤭
I subscribed to your channel about a year ago because I love how you review games. You admit when you don’t like something solely based on your personal preferences. While watching your videos, I never felt like you were trying to sway your viewers one way or another. I’ve never seen you hateful or mean-spirited, even if you didn’t like a particular otome game. I consider reviews, but ultimately, I make my own choice. Thank you for speaking out about this because reviews can make or break a game.
I’m glad to hear that my reviews don’t feel that way, because I’m always so paranoid that maybe I’m being too harsh, particularly as of recent with getting all picky about something with playing too many otome 🤣 Hopefully I can continue to make less emotional reviews (apart from the fan girling, I can’t help that hehe) so people can enjoy watching them!
I feel like there’s also an element of personal responsibility on the players/viewers to keep an open mind and ultimately make their own decisions on games based on their tastes! Just like everyone has different types for LIs they do for the games as well! For example, personally I know I wouldn’t like Bustafellows because there isn’t enough romance, and romance is what I play these games for! And so many people praise that game!
Thank you and I'm glad my review help! I agree with you, if you are to avoid missing out then it's always good to have an open mind. It seems also important to see how much you align with that reviewer. I find it helpful to find reviewers where your points of enjoyment align so that if they enjoy something then perhaps the likelihood of you enjoying it is also high! I felt the same about bustafellows, while it is so popular, unfortunately the game wasn't a huge favourite. I can see why it was popular, just the romance was lacking for me too 😭
There seems to be a way of evaluating art now where questionable or inappropriate behavior by a character in a narrative is seen as somehow condoning that behavior. This feels very limiting and simplistic to me, and ultimately it dumbs down art.
I agree! Just because you enjoy content that has a certain troublesome theme to it, doesn’t mean that you agree with it. Like crime documentaries, just because it’s about a murderer doesn’t mean that it’s bad or that you’re going to commit murder.
Great video! I think it’s also hard because Otome games are more about emotional response to the story than anything, so it’s hard to know how people will take it. I wish more people would just like what they like, and respect the opinions of those who don’t. I appreciate both the positive and negative opinions that are offered. Believing one viewpoint alone is right just isn’t good. 😊
Thank you! And yes, more or less otome game reviews cover peoples’ feelings towards certain things that happen more so than technical difficulties (that’s very rare haha) I agree that it’s the respect that is so important, we don’t want a tyrant going around and telling people not to play certain games just because they didn’t like them. It feels weird and wrong imo 😶
Looking at a variety of reviews is always a good idea. One thing I tend to do on Amazon products is to look at the 4 or 3 star reviews, because those typically give a good handle on your experience as a whole. For example, a 4 star product review explaining how x product didn't work in the particular instance they bought it for, but it was good for everything else. Little things someone totally satisfied wouldn't notice at first. Complete adoration or complete hatred of something is rarely completely accurate, even when there's tons of voices on either side. There's plenty of games I gave a chance after hearing people bash it, and most of the time the game had redeeming qualities and no way deserved that amount of vitriol. There's a weird phenomena in video game culture where it almost becomes a meme to hate on particular game. So it's less about the game itself, and more like bonding over hating it instead. Of course, this is all the more difficult with otome games since it a lot of it does come down to personal taste. The branching nature of otomes further complicates things-you can have a route which totally fits everything you love, and then another have everything you despise. I like a wide variety of things, and I'd be very sad if criticism pressured otome games as *a whole* into a "100% wholesome no one even says a single bad word" extreme. I would also be annoyed at the other extreme of pressuring people to be wow so edgy, but uh, from what I could tell when I last interacted in the community that wasn't really a issue.
That's very true! The extremes definitely have more bias in them while the midgrounds seem to see both sides of the coin better. It's nuts how bashing a game can be seen as a 'fun' thing amongst some communities. I just hope this doesn't happen in the otome community, esp with it being such a small genre. Not to mention sometimes people bash games before they have even arrived in the west. It seems unhealthy to me for someone to be overly negative with an agenda about a game that could potentially be released in the west since it could make sales in the west decline before it even hits the market, particularly if that reviewer has a relatively large following. Oh well, I just hope this video helps people keep an open mind in one way or another!
I'm so grateful for your reviews! They're entertaining, insightful and you can tell you're not making them just to get views, etc. You also have such a positive and nice energy. Thank you for what you do and for being yourself 💖 I really hope (if this is what you want to do) you can continue to share with all of us because platforms need more real and sweet people like you ❤❤❤
Awww thank you sugar, this comment really made my day 😭💕 There was a time when I was extremely anxious about views, etc, but fortunately I don’t feel that way anymore and simply enjoy talking about games and interacting with the community especially in streams. I don’t plan to full quit any time soon, so for the foreseeable future everyone must suffer with my hyper fan girling!!! 🤭
I generally don't give reviews much credence. I go to it to view/find certain things about the otome: length to play, length of common route, does the lead have eyes, and steam level. Some of my favorite games--otome and other--were played before I even knew reviews were a thing.
Omg, this is one of the main reasons i rarely interact with the gaming community. One time, i was ganged up on and bullied by a youtuber and his fanboys because I liked Final Fantasy 15. The youtuber felt like he was some sort of god, and what he said was "law." After calling me r*tarded for liking the game, his fanboys then berated me. I had to block that youtuber because of it. That's just ONE BAD experience of the many. I just don't understand it. I enjoy your reviews and they have helped me decided what games i want to buy first or wait till a price drop. I like when you let us viewers know if a game lacks romance or if it is SUPER DARK. I like knowing these things so i can dive in and do more research before i buy. I like the honesty and when gamers do skits. But yeah ..i have a hard time finding otome gamers who arent too critical with their reviews or give everything an A+ lol 😆 Cuz sometimes i enjoy playing bad otome games for laughs too.
Omg that’s so awful 😭 I do sometimes feel that clout can get to a reviewer’s head and they stop respecting those who helped them rise in the first place. Click bait titles are another that feels iffy, particularly if there is some sort of agenda behind it. Hopefully this sort of thing doesn’t happen to you again 😣 Sometimes going in with really low expectations makes the game fun 🤭
That's absolutely right, with all things in life it's good to go around and gather different opinions, whether on the game or some life-related topic, and then we can form our opinion ourselves ^^ I would say negative content does upset me in general, but at the same time it's motivating (I even thought about, if I had time, to make some game reviews on games I totally love but see only negative reviews on!) and in case with my first channel, One Piece manga reactions, I started it exactly because I wanted to see how people reacted to a certain chapter and right away went across a very negative reaction that made me think "why do you even read One Piece"... So I decided to balance it out with positivity! In this case, you definitely balance out any negative otome reviews with your own that are balanced and show the game in a more objective light ❤️
Glad to hear that my reviews don’t come across as too negative, especially given I’m always so paranoid that I’m being harsh 😂 It’s true though, sometimes you want to make a review to balance another one out. I have also had the temptation to play games because someone bashed it so hard in what almost feels like rebellion lol It sounds like you provide fun content for your audience too!
While I love reading reviews on games, I usually tune in to the reviewers who are more balanced. And that's what I like about your reviews, you never bash on the games and you understand that your cup of tea may not be someone else's cup of tea. I always take your reasons for not liking a game or liking a game into consideration. I've actually bought a game you mentioned you didn't like because the reason you didn't like it is something I do like 🤣
I feel that it’s a lot more pleasant to read/watch a balanced review because then you don’t feel like the weirdo for liking the game lol. While some of my friends have bashed games in blog style, I read them for fun more so than to take it seriously and I believe that has always been her intention! It comforts me to know that even when I say something negative about a game, that what I don’t like is info that can be used to help decide whether to buy a game or not 🤭
Great points! Please keep making reviews and content like you do, I love getting to hear your opinion, as well as other opinions on games! I think that makes it more personable and fun! I love that you always include who the game might be for and who it’s not for! That always helps me decide whether I would enjoy it or not!😊
I don't usually comment on videos but I have to say that I relate a lot to what you say! I enjoy Otome, BL and just any visual novel that catches my attention. Sometimes, some of this games are a little... wild. I watch reviews to see what *could* interest me from a game I know little about, and obviously the reviewers opinion but I try for it to not influence my own. Or at least not until I try the game myself! I always keep an open mind with new things. Like with books, don't judge one for it's cover! And even if I disliked it after, I won't try to keep people away from the piece of media. Not for the simple reason of "I didn't like it so don't waste your time". Sometimes after finishing a game and feel confused by the ending I might watch reviews later to see if anyone shares the same feeling or maybe to clear my own thoughts. But even then, I have yet to change my enjoyment of a game because of the way others talk about it. I'm the one that lived an experience with the game, I'm the only one that knows how much I liked it. And about playing as if you were a fly on the wall! 😹 I LOVE when main characters have a name AND a voice. It just makes it feel as if I was the angel (or devil) on their shoulder. That is maybe my many hours on the sims at fault. I just can't self insert on a game. When I play I'm always like: "Nooo, bestie." or "Go for it!" with the mc. And I like it that way! 🌼
I feel honoured that you decided to comment when usually you don’t! 🥰 But yes! Ultimately you’re the only one who will truly know whether you like a game or not! It’s best if you seek several reviewers you like the style of, and then prioritise what games you get in that way. Personally I prefer it when a reviewer is quite objective like extremely ragey in almost a parody level 😂 Totally agree with MC having VA, like I know not everyone enjoys that, but for me it really adds to the experience like in Variable Barricade or Jack Jeanne!
Well said! I like the section of your reviews when you say who you would recommend it to. Like maybe it's not your thing but other players might like it. Also question for you! Are there any upcoming titles you're getting? I was considering Otome Doushi but I'm not sure yet
That's why I try to include that part. I would never want to discourage anyone from playing an otome unless it is unplayable (technical issues, crashes etc lol). And oooh good question! I have been super curious about Mistonia, but with tight finances I think I'll have to wait a little before purchasing it. I hope you enjoy Otome Doushi! It does look really cute 😍
It's too late, Luli, I've already decided that you are the top authority on all otome titles, and I will accept no one else's input. 🙂Enjoyed this video.
Hi Luli! It’s been a while and I hope your day has been well! I agree that one review shouldn’t affect a person’s experience of playing a game. Personally for me, I usually look at the art and the premise of the story, and from there, it depends if I should get the game or not. For example, if getting Olympia Soirée and Virche Evermore are my main priority on getting the game, Cupid Parasite is not but I would still like to get it someday. Does the idea make sense? Like you, I do enjoy watching the drama! We need more plot on it after all lol! I’m more invested the love story between the characters rather than insert myself and giggle on their cute interactions! 😆 Just a couple days ago, my little sis and I finished playing Olympia Soiree and at the end of 2023, we completed Virche Evermore! Of course, everyone’s opinions varied because it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. For me and my sis, we feel the games always gave us a theme from start to finish! For example, the overall concept of Olympia Soiree requires change and it takes time. You cannot change a person’s opinion or thoughts because it’s them who should make that change. Whereas, Virche Evermore’s concept is hope. It could be bittersweet yet you still yearn for a hopeful on the characters.
Long time no see! I’m happy to hear that you’ve been playing some of my most enjoyed games! OS and Virche were so up my street with how serious the topics covered are and some of those bad endings omg I loved them!!! For me, I tend to check overall reviews to get a feeling for what it was about the game that the reviewer liked/disliked and then take that as info on the game and see what other reviewers say about that topic. I’m also aware that some reviewers may be more sensitive to certain things than me, or have a different sense of humour. It really is important to find a reviewer whose values align with yours to get the most out of them!
I really enjoy watching your reviews. You have introduced me to many games I would not have found otherwise. And we do have our own opinions. I have liked some of the games that you rated lower than others which is totally fine. I enjoy you detailing every aspect of the game so that we know what to expect in everything. It made me pick up Radiant Tale which was really cute and I am looking forward to the fan disc. Speaking of fan discs, I know you like Cupid Parasite. Are you looking forward to the fan disc?
That’s really good to hear! And yesss I think I mentioned in this video, but one of my good otome friends always seems to like the games I wasn’t a huge fan of hahaha, so it’s really funny to see the difference. I’ve actually been playing the CupiPara fan disk and uh… Let’s just say if you’re thinking of picking it up, pick it up for the right reasons, aka for the wacky ‘what the hell is going on’ vibe more so than for spice/cute romance 🤣
@@RestingPeachFace oh yes, I've watched the trailer and the cg's I was like this just looks hilarious. I haven't even played the first one, but I kind of want to play it just to laugh at it. Is it at least funny?
Great video, thanks for speaking on this! ❤ I feel like we should spread more positivity reviews that are too negative can make you lose the chance of playing a game you may love
I agree! I think it’s ok to say you don’t like a game, just make sure it’s obvious that it’s your opinion alone and without any weird underlying agenda. Plus, no review should be taken as the word anyway, we all have preferences and that’s ok 💕
Yes i really agree with you! There's this one reviewer that review otome game that i really love and began to criticize the game really hard even tho thats not the overall aspect of the game and it made everyone dont want to play the game. So i feel kind of offended but i know everyone has different taste tho☹
Oh no 😭 It sucks when that happens, and while I agree that everyone has different taste, there's a difference between constructive criticism and criticism just for the sake of it and sometimes people mistake the two. It doesn't help that extreme views tend to bring more views/page clicks/followers than balanced ones 😬

Yes! It’s great when that happens, especially when you’re trying to prioritise what game to buy, particularly now with so many releases 😶

But yeah ..i have a hard time finding otome gamers who arent too critical with their reviews or give everything an A+ lol 😆
Cuz sometimes i enjoy playing bad otome games for laughs too.
Omg that’s so awful 😭
I do sometimes feel that clout can get to a reviewer’s head and they stop respecting those who helped them rise in the first place. Click bait titles are another that feels iffy, particularly if there is some sort of agenda behind it. Hopefully this sort of thing doesn’t happen to you again 😣
Sometimes going in with really low expectations makes the game fun 🤭
Glad to hear that my reviews don’t come across as too negative, especially given I’m always so paranoid that I’m being harsh 😂
It’s true though, sometimes you want to make a review to balance another one out. I have also had the temptation to play games because someone bashed it so hard in what almost feels like rebellion lol
It sounds like you provide fun content for your audience too!
But yes! Ultimately you’re the only one who will truly know whether you like a game or not! It’s best if you seek several reviewers you like the style of, and then prioritise what games you get in that way. Personally I prefer it when a reviewer is quite objective like extremely ragey in almost a parody level 😂
Totally agree with MC having VA, like I know not everyone enjoys that, but for me it really adds to the experience like in Variable Barricade or Jack Jeanne!
You make me laugh haha, my word is certainly not THE word, esp with my often
questionable tastes 🤣
Just a couple days ago, my little sis and I finished playing Olympia Soiree and at the end of 2023, we completed Virche Evermore!
There should be more vids like this, speak your mind Sis! 🙌❤
Aww thank you! Maybe if I ever feel like saying something I’ll make these to let off steam haha
Thanks for sharing, you got such a big support system and your smaller then my channel so don't let anyone change your opinion 😊
I adore all my followers, they’ve always been so sweet and comforting to me!
Oh no 😭
It sucks when that happens, and while I agree that everyone has different taste, there's a difference between constructive criticism and criticism just for the sake of it and sometimes people mistake the two.
It doesn't help that extreme views tend to bring more views/page clicks/followers than balanced ones 😬
@@RestingPeachFace yes i couldnt agree more!😭
This is why i like your videos you are fair to the game you review hehehe
Aww thank you Rei!
You’ll always be my biggest support person! 💕
