Great List. I credit your Tull vids for going back through the whole catalog and revisiting all the great tracks. Anyone out there love "Back to the Family" as much as me?
My son was born in 82. He was exposed to a myriad of bands and different music. All the classic stuff. Of all these Tull was and is still his favorite band. ✌
Underrated rock bands: Electric Light Orchestra Credence Clearwater Revival Livin’ color Kings x Ugly kid Joe Blue Oyster Cult Emerson, Lake And Palmer ZZ Top Monster Magnet Volbeat.
I'm a huge Jethro Tull fan and you've not mentioned my favourite track: We used to know. So good even the Eagles stole parts of it for Hotel California! I agree with you about My God, easily one of their greatest songs. Other favourites: Life is a long song, With you there to help me, Moths, Skating Away, Steel Monkey, Requiem, Wondering Aloud, Sweet Dream, Look into the sun. Mr Ian Anderson is a genius and it's about time he was knighted by TheQueen.
My Top 10: 1. Songs From the Wood 2. Bakers St. Muse 3. Thick as a Brick Part 2 4. Dun Ringill 5. Witches Promise 6. Nothing to Say 7. Batteries Not Included 8. Cross Eyed Mary 9. Bungle in the Jungle 10. Minstrel in the Gallery
Nice list Brian. I had Aqualung at #1, and Thick as a Brick at number two, and Bouree at number three. Aqualung got numero uno cuz it's the only song of his I can half ass play. I love that lead riff. The ambivalent lyrics are dynamite. He creates sympathy for this derilict, sick, lost soul, but not enough for you to take him home, offer him a meal, and introduce him to your wife. His filthy Jesus, half wild and half civilized, is a guy torn to pieces by poverty, despair, loneliness, erotic desires, hunger, heart disease, lice, whooping cough, a few cancers, and who even vicious zombies would be afraid to befriend. Even cops won't arrest him for fear of stinking up their jail cells. What a foetid flower of fornication he is! And wouldn't you think a pariah and social leper like Aqualung would have at least twelve apostles? Thick as a Brick is one of the best albums I've ever heard. It's a powerful meditation and condemnation of the English class system, the hypocrisy of teachers, preachers, politicians and professors who can only pretend to be wise (i.e., thick as a brick) while the only person who is wise is one of their victims, Little Milton, the twelve year old poet, who proves their civilization is a joke, and everything they say and do is evil. Bouree just takes you to another world.
"Teacher"'s catchy bass intro with the slide down then building all of the main layered thick riffs with the percussive syncopated rolls is way ahead of its time/changes & unforgettable in my mind. Well wishes.
It's Tull time! 10 ) Back Door Angels 9 ) Seal Driver 8 ) Hunting Girl 7 ) Jump Start 6 ) For a Thousand Mothers 5 ) With you there to Help me 4 ) Hymn 43 3 ) TAAB 2 ) Part of the Machine 1 ) Flying Dutchman Like our ilustrious host, I struggled with only 10 songs! I have been a Jethro Tull fan since October 1971, and that was because of AQUALUNG'S release! 4 or 5 Aqua songs could have made it, but I wanted my list to be drawn from as diverse as possible among the several Tull catalog classics ! Ring out solstice bells... Cheerio!
My top ten Tull: 10. Cross Eyed Mary 9. Bouree 8. Songs From The Wood 7. Thick As A Brick 6. Bungle In The Jungle 5. Teacher 4. A New Day Yesterday 3. Skating Away 2. Aqualung 1. Locomotive Breath Honorable Mentions: Minstrel In The Gallery, Too Old To Rock And Roll, Overseer Overture, Flight From Lucifer, Critique Oblique, Fylingdale Flyer, Ring Out Solstice Bells, Broadsword, Fat Man, Living In The Past, My God, Hymn 43, A Song For Jeffrey, To Cry You A Song, Batteries Not Included, 4WD, The Whistler
I'm 74 and I became a huge fan of Tull with Stand Up. I saw them live four times and Benefit was their next album and by far my favorite. "With You There to Help Me" is a great song and so is "To Cry You a Song" (I'm a blackbird, still shaking my wings), but my favorite is "Play In Time" where Ian Anderson and Martin Barre produced a unique sound by recording Martin's guitar solos and then playing them backwards on the record. It made for a powerful sound that was mind blowing for me at the time, "Talking to the people in my way."
You're right, it's really impossible to get down to 10 - but I guess mine would be (from 1-10, very approximately): To Cry You A Song We Used To Know Velvet Green With You There To Help Me Play In Time Wind Up Nothing Is Easy Cross-Eyed Mary My God No Lullaby
1. Wond'ring Again (*my all-time favorite song btw) 2. Thick as a Brick 3. Wind Up (so glad you recognized this one!) 4. Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day 5. Fires at Midnight 6. One Brown Mouse 7. Moths 8. Cup of Wonder 9. Pibroch (Cap in Hand) 10. Baker St. Muse
Well the best Tull song is Always the one I am just listening to in the Moment... But seriously: 1) Black Sunday 2) Dark Ages 3) Alive, and well and Living in (I think that (!) was the song that was on Benefit instead of "Teacher" in Europe 4)Chequered Flag (Dead or Alive) 5)Velvet Green 6)Pibroch (Cap in Hand) 7)Mountain Man 8)Roots to Branches 9)Moths 10)A song for Michael Collins, Jeffrey and me honorable mentions: any song on "Aqualung" (without "Locomotive Breath" I wouldn´t be a Tull fan) / any song on Broadsword and the Beastie (except "Watchin me watching you) / and of Course Thick as a Brick (as a whole) / Reason for waiting / One white Duck / Jump Start / Farm on the Freeway and I guess I forgot half of them
‘With you there to help me’, ‘Son’, ‘For Michael Collins, Jeffrey and me’, ‘A time for everything?’, ‘Nothing to say’, ‘Inside’, the whole blasted album is great!
A HUGE Jethro Tull Fan Here. My First Exposure To Ian Anderson Was......'Songs From The Wood'. I Didn't Know Anything About Tull, But The Album Was On Sale At Woolworths For $4.99 I Took It Home And Placed It On The Turntable...🎵 "Let Me Bring You Songs From The Wood, To Make You Feel Much Better Than You Could Know..."🎵....From That Moment On, I WAS HOOKED!!!
this is late but it took me awhile.... 1. A Passion Play 2. Thick As A Brick 3. My God 4. Roots To Branches 5. Budapest 6. Aqualung 7. Farm On The Freeway 8. Rock Island 9. Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of A New Day 10. Heavy Horses
1. Minstrel in the Gallery, 2.Lifes a Long Song, 3. We used to Know, 4. Thick as a Brick, 5. Witches Promise, 6. Sweet Dream, 7.Songs From the Wood, 8. Living in the Past, 9.Skating Away, 10. Aqualung. That was hard to find a top ten, I put in a lot of the early stuff, I was born '52 so remember the singles with affection.looking forward to your next collection Pete.
Great list, Pete. My Top Ten: 1) *Cross-Eyed Mary* 2) *Aqualung* (I know; the obvious choices but I so fucking love them still) 3) *Minstrel In The Gallery* 4) *Hymn 43* 5) *Locomotive Breath* 6) *Living In The Past* 7) *Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll; Too Young To Die* 8) *Skating Away (On The Thin Ice Of A New Day)* 9) *Kissing Willie* 10) *Farm On The Freeway* *Honorable Mentions:* Bungle In The Jungle; Teacher; Bourée; Thick As A Brick; Lap Of Luxury (sorry; it's catchy AF); A New Day Yesterday (possibly the heaviest song they ever did); Nothing Is Easy; Sossity, You're A Woman
Well, this one is hard for me, too, but mostly because, IMO, every single song on "Stand Up" could make up my top 10. But since I have others I like a lot, I have revised my list, but have only been able to narrow it down to 11 (Thanks, "Stand Up"!!) A New Day Yesterday Nothing Is Easy Fat Man Back to the Family We Used to Know Reasons for Waiting Thick As A Brick (although I get bored before side 2 is over) Skating Away on the Thin Ice of the New Day Farm on the Freeway Teacher Minstrel In The Gallery I also really LOVED "A Passion Play", but it's too hard to separate out a single song. The first time I heard it, in 1977, I was under the influence of a psychedelic. Now THAT was an intense experience!!! Started the night with a lunar eclipse viewed from Zilcher Park in Austin, TX, then "A Passion Play" and other music later. Some things that happened that night, are still a mystery to this day!!!
10. No Lullaby (one of their most underrated tracks... heavy and proggy with nimble and fun guitar all throughout) 9. Locomotive Breath (classy intro and the thumping bassline make it one of their most addictive songs) 8. Broadsword (best song from an album that combined a modern synth sound with their natural folk elements without sounding strange at all) 7. Velvet Green (My favorite folk-style song from the superb Songs from the Wood record) 6. Cross-Eyed Mary (amazing grim intro and one of the heaviest riffs with an almost Deep Purple-like twang; some of Ian's best flute work) 5. Cry You a Song (groovy, with one of their most memorable riffs and a lot of nice leads) 4. Dark Ages (a real epic track with killer guitar work that's almost borderline metal) 3. Aqualung (don't care that it's overplayed, it's really their signature song and every part of it sticks to your head... great guitar for 1971's standards) 2. A Passion Play (since Thick as a Brick isn't cheating, I have to pick this one... The whole thing could be studied by scholars for years) 1. Black Satin Dancer (gorgeous semi-ballad with Martin Barre's best solo in my opinion, and some of his best guitar work in general, especially the heavy prog rock breakdown around the four minute mark)
10. A Christmas Song 9. Farm on the Freeway 8. Cross-Eyed Mary 7. Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day 6. Too Old to Rock n' Roll: Too Young to Die 5. Living in the Past 4. A Song for Jeffrey 3. Teacher 2. Thick as a Brick 1. Locomotive Breath
I have a completely different list but it's always interesting to hear other people's. Happy to hear a Roots to Branches shout out, their last legit great album.
I go from “This Was” through “Thick as a Brick” as far as my knowledge of Tull music is concerned. I got to see Jethro Tull in April of 1972 (Tuscaloosa, AL). Naturally, that show was loaded with Aqualung and Thick as a Brick songs. Excellent top 10 list!
Big thumbs up on your list, Pete. You've got it nailed. Couldn't agree more. The top ten format is great, but hey I like all your formats. Awesome channel.
Great to hear you give much credit to the Stormwatch album. That was the first JT album that I bought and it lead me to become a great fan of them. I like most of your picks off that album although I would include 'North Sea Oil' and 'Home' in my list. 'Home' is such a beautiful song. North Sea Oil was the first song I heard from JT.
I've always loved the folkier, calmer side of Tull, I think Broadford Bazaar might be my favourite of theirs. Melancholic, romantic, a bit gritty and bitter in the vocals. Just lovely.
Can't go wrong with Tull. Something like this today for me: 10. Cold Wind to Valhalla 9. Black Sunday 8. Fire at Midnight 7. Aqualung 6. Broadsword 5. Baker St Muse 4. Hunting Girl 3. The Wahler's Dues 2. Heavy Horses 1. Wind Up
Right on point with To Cry You a Song! One of the best, could listen on a loop. Nice shout out on Cold Wind too. Hope Velvet Green , Rainbow Blues and New Day Yesterday were on page two! thanks for the video.
My top 10: 10. Back Door Angels 9. Lick Your Fingers Clean (Aqualung out-take) 8. Dun Ringill 7. Songs from the Wood 6. Moths 5. Mother Goose 4. My God 3. The Whistler 2. Cross-Eyed Mary 1. Aqualung I have to put Aqualung at number 1. Its one of those songs I never tire of hearing. Around 30 years ago, I had a few neighbors that would sit around and toss back a few beers and listen to music. One of them would bring out his speakers and blast Aqualung from his turntable. A great, fond memory. Always keeps it at #1 for me.
Totally love your channel. I'm from back in the day, my first store bought album was "Canned Heat Boogie" when I was 13. Enjoy your content and look forward to more.....keep on Rockin' !
I saw Tull 13 times from 69 to 83... Most spectacular band ever..!!!!! Every years they where all getting better and better until in the 80 when they changed the band,,it was still excellent but not the same at all, then the last tour i saw Ian had such a hard time singing that it broke my heart to see him diminish in his performance.... I sadly stop to go to see them. You look at TH-cam of the Song from the Wood tour or Heavy horses,,just amazing the control of musical nuances from every members.!!! Amazing fantastic band they where for sure, number ONE live..!
I just saw this. I appreciate your choices especially your number 1. I'm gonna quickly give you my favorite 10 Jethro Tull songs. I tend to go for the deeper cuts regardless of how famous they are. 10. Baker Street Muse 9. The Whistler 8. Jeffry Goes To Leister Square 7. Song For Michael Collins Jeffry And Me 6. One Brown Mouse 5. Mother Goose 4. The Witches' Promise 3. Life Is A Long Song 2. Hymn 43 1. Skating Away
Hi Pete, another fine choice! I must admit I haven't listened to Benefit yet, but I will very soon. Here are my Tull favourites: 1. Songs from the Wood 2. Heavy Horses 3. Rover 4. Hunting Girl 5. A Passion Play 6. Thick as a Brick 7. The Whistler 8. Velvet Green 9. Acres Wild 10. Hymn 43 I guess it's easy to find out what my two favourite Tull albums are ...
1) Life's a long song 2) THICK AS A BRICK 3) Minstrel in the Gallery 4) Skating Away 5) My God 6) Wondring Again 6) Look into the Sun 7) Moths 8)Velvet Green 9) One White Duck 10) The Clasp
10. Wind Up 9. Aqualung 8. A New Day Yesterday 7. Skating Away On the Thin Ice Of A New Day 6. My God 5. Nothing Is Easy 4. Locomotive Breath 3. Minstrel In The Gallery 2. Thick As a Brick 1. A Passion Play
Yeah, mother goose a goodie plus lifes a long song. I get that it's real hard to strip it down to ten. Especially when my two favorite albums are APP and TAAB.
This list for me is so spot on. Love the two songs you picked from Benefit....You're honorable mention list is so great....Cross Eyed Mary.....OMG....such a enormous list of great songs and music. Had the pleasure of seeing Martin's Band less than a year ago...So good...played Teacher and Minstrel.
So many to choose from: 1. My God 2. A New Day Yesterday 3. Nothing Is Easy 4. To Cry You A Song 5. Inside 6. Dark Ages 7. Look into the Sun 8. One Brown Mouse 9. Budapest 10. Watching Me, Watching You If I could put the whole Passion Play album on there as one song, I would.
I did that with Thick as a Brick- they are both one LONG song to me! For some reason I didn't mention A New Day Yesterday in my honorable mentions list...it was certainly on it!
@@seaoftranquilityprog I ended spinning both Stand Up and Benefit in the car last night. Good point. I think the Hare break in the middle of APP has me think of it as a three song album.
Thanks for this..revisiting the great Jethro Tull….a band that I don't play enuff!! I was a casual fan for years, then around 1999 I became fanatic about them. Starting buying all their albums cheap, used, like for $1.00. I even saw them live around that time. Over past 18 years , that kind of fell of my radar. So, this was fun. I need to dig out those tunes again. Always loved the guitar of Martin Barre. Great list. I would have added Witches Promise.
10 - Bungle In The Jungle 9 - Teacher 8 - Song For Jeffery 7 - Lap Of Luxury 6 - Living In The Past 5 - Thick As A Brick (entire version) 4 - Cross-Eyed Mary 3 - Aqualung 2 - Farm On The Freeway 1 - Locomotive Breath
1. Locomotive Breath 2. Heavy Horses 3. Thick As A Brick 4. Aqualung 5. Wond’Ring Aloud 6. Cross Eyed Mary 7. To Cry You A Song 8. Bouree 9. Mother Goose 10. Living In The Past honorable mentions Hunting Girl A Song For Jeffrey Teacher The Whistler A Passion Play Cold Wind To Valhalla Baker St. Muse (Medley)
Some that aren't mentioned so much; 10 Sealion 9 Automotive Engineering 8 Strange Avenues 7 Heavy Water 6 Bends like a Willow 5 Dangerous Veils 4 Bad-eyed and Loveless 3 Big Dipper 2 Rare and Precious Chain 1 Seal Driver
Picking a top 10 Jethro Tull songs is like picking a favorite toe !!! I like all my toes lol 1. Heavy Horses 2. Songs from the Wood 3. Hunting Girl 4. The Whistler 5. Black Sunday 6. Awol 7. Locomotive Breath 8. To cry you a song 9. Flyingdale Flyer 10. Dark Ages
Tull are one of my fav. bands and it's very hard to list just 10 of their songs. I've left out some of their most obvious ones. 10. Dun Ringill 9. Elegy 8. Locomotive Breath 7. Budapest 6. The Third Hoorah 5. Salamander 4. Overseer Overture (Passion Play) 3. Rover 2. Thick As A Brick 1. Minstrel In The Gallery
I'm 49. Been a Tull fan since I was in 8th grade in 1983. My older brother allowed me to record his MU Best Of album to cassette. I was sold. I was known in HS as "the Tull guy" in the 80s. I could not put together a top 10 of this band, but I was just talking to a HS friend recently about how I have grown to appreciate their music so much more the older I've gotten. he said, "How's that possible?" I have really grown to love the Benefit, Stand Up, and Living in the Past albums more. I always LOVED Stand Up, but I was only tied to a few songs on Benefit as a kid, I now LOVE their earlier stuff. I would have Up the Pool, No Lullaby, Home, Black Sunday, Wondring Aloud and Again, every song from Aqualung, To Cry You a Song, We Used to Know, Back to the Family, Reasons for Waiting are among my favorites. I also love the acoustic version of Under Wraps. I believe Ian Anderson was just a great song writer. Side note: I bought Aqualung on cassette on a Sunday my freshman year and put it on as I did my homework on Sunday evening. I was home alone. When MY God went into the choir section, I was freaked out. It sounded like the choir from The Omen. BRILLIANT song writing.
So glad " My God " is high up on your list. That mysterious sounding gem is actually THE song that attracted me to Tull from the get go. And of course so did that entire album.
Great list! But I would definitely put A Passion Play and think as a brick in the top! Two of my favorite songs and albums of all time! I'm looking forward to more prog!
I was never a big fan of the song Dark Ages , until I heard the alternate version on the recent Steven Wilson remix Stormwatch box set . It's fantastic . Keep those box sets ( and extra tracks ) coming !!!!
Love your channel and what you're doing. The Jethro Tull I was exposed to is whatever Wnew played. I do hear Witches Promise in the grocery store constantly though.
Really? How cool is that! I'd say WNEW (I'm assuming you are talking about the formerly great NYC station?) probably played Aqualung, Teacher, Hymn 43, Locomotive Breath, Cross Eyed Mary, Living in the Past, Tool Old, Bungle in the Jungle, and Skating Away. Perhaps Songs From the Wood. Those were generally Tull songs that the more 'adventurous' FM rock stations would play back in the day. Now, you are lucky if you get 3 of those.
@@seaoftranquilityprog Scott Muni and the gang. That station played everything. Miss it a lot. I live Arizona now and they play the classic rock you ranted about. Same songs everyday.
Great list. I was afraid My God would be forgotten Once you said that I thought; this man knows what he is talking about!! I think A New Day Yesterday is about as great as they got. Someone called “ Reasons for Waiting “ ear candy; I agree. Anyone ever heard 17? First heard it in a bootleg album.I love that one. There’s a cut down 3 minute version; and a 6 minute one with the extended guitar/ instrumental
Excellent. No criticisms whats so ever with your top 10. I would have had darma for one from living in the past in the honorable mention list. Great job!!! 😀 I saw them in the seventies in Montreal. My brother played with Martin backstage fantastic show!!
What are the most amazing live bands I've ever seen in my life when they did thick as a brick Ian Anderson was in his prime he put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen the whole feel for prog rock meets baroque was amazing
I totally agree with "to cry you a song". I just recently discovered it while listening to Benefit and it is one of my favs from Tull. Killer killer guitar riff to drive it through, with a nice jam section.
Great list man! My top 10: 1. Heavy Horses 2. North Sea Oil 3. Hym 43 4. Songs from the Wood 5. Mother Goose 6. Aqualung 7. Witches Promise 8. Song for Jeffrey 9. Too old to Rocknroll 10. Hunting Girl
I'm glad "Flying Dutchman" made honorable mention, at least, since I consider it the finest flute work Ian Anderson recorded during Tull's 'classic' period.
1. Inside 2. Back to the family 3. My god 4. Minstrel in the gallery 5.Cross eyed Mary 6.Jack in the green 7.Wind up 8. Aqualung 9. Songs from the wood 10. A new day yesterday
My Top Ten 10. Heavy Horses 9. My God 8. Songs from the Woods 7. Minstrel in the Gallery 6. Baker St. Muse 5. Pibroch (Cap in hand) 4. Crossed eyed Mary 3. Too old to Rock’n Roll too young to die 2. Aqualung 1. Thick as a Brick
1- Hunting Girl 2- Cross-eyed Mary. 3- Too Old to Rock and Roll and Too Young to Die. 4- Minstrel in the Gallery. 5- Nothin' to Say. 6- Velvet Green. 7- Rocks on the Road. 8- Baker Street Muse. 9- Flying Dutchman. 10- Taxi Grab.
Hard to pick Tull. You have to include Thick as a Brick. It's a journey through musical ideas. Aqualung is just plain classic album through and through. A lot of good music through the 70s.
My list....1. Thick as a brick (side 1) 2. 2 rainbow blues, 3. Hunting girl, 4. Black Sunday, 5. Bungle in the jungle, 6 living in the past. 7 jump start, 8 songs from the wood, 9 we used to know, 10 too old to rock and roll....
I like your list, especially that Teacher and To cry you a song are included. A few you might reconsider: Reasons for waiting, Falling on hard times, and A new day yesterday.
I used to do lists like this all the time to pass time either in front of a canvas or at some mundane work ty for the vids. One brown mouse, skating away, rainbow blues, steel monkey, budepest, thick as....just a few Id choose.
My top 10 1. Farm on the freeway 2. Budapest 3. Jump start 4. Minstrel in the gallery 5. One white duck 6. Rocks on the road 7. Ears of tin 8. Aqualung 9. Living in the past 10. Heavy horses
Being younger I have discovered Jethro Tull in a rather random fashion. I haven't all the albums yet but most. What surprises me is how good the later albums is. Albums few ever mention. I recently bought "J-Tull Dot Com" and honestly. I really dig it. It doesn't sound like some tired old band trying to earn easy cash or doing the exact same thing over and over again. The flute and guitars are still top notch. Martin Barre must be one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. All the things he plays on. All the different styles. His fluent style. I don't really get how someone in such a successful band for so many years trying so many things still get so little attention. Shame on the rock world! Even the songs that might have silly lyrics are often instrumentally just fine!
So many to choose from: 1) My God 2) Flying Dutchman 3) Minstrel in the Gallery 4) Witches Promise 5) Cup of Wonder 6) Nothing is Easy 7) Wondring Again 8) The Third Hoorah 9) Valley 10) And Further On Apologies to 50 other songs that did not make it!
My God I can't argue with your list because I love Tull more than life itself. My list would have included Reasons For Waiting which has the greatest strings ever in a rock song. Glad you at least mentioned Wind Up since it's the greatest song ever written by the hand of man.
Hey Pete, really glad you got to Tull, my favorite band next to YES. I pretty much agree with your list. I love everything they did up until Ian started losing his voice. One of my favorite albums you didn't mention was Crest of a Naive. A great song from that disc is Dogs in the Midwinter, a light very catchy tune.
10: One White Duck/ 0=Nothing at all 9: Wind Up 8: Rainbow Blues 7: Velvet Green 6: Moths 5: Another Harry's Bar 4: Broadford Bazaar 3: Thick as a Brick 2: Cheap Day Return 1: Baker St. Muse
Great job, Pete, and I agree that this was a really tough list to compile, considering the vast number of amazing Jethro Tull songs to choose from. A few songs you didn't mention that I would have included are Skating Away on the Thin Ice of the New Day, Cold Wind to Valhalla, Warm Sporran, King Henry's Madrigal, Life is a Long Song, Summerday Sands, Baker St. Muse, Black Satin Dancer, and- very important- I would have included at least one bluesier song from their debut LP "This Was," such as My Sunday Feeling or Cat's Squirrel, featuring a blistering guitar part played by the band's sometimes forgotten first guitarist, Mick Abrams. All in all, a difficult job to choose only 10 from so many amazing Tull songs!
I loved all of the 70s songs by Tull, but here are ten of my favorites that I still find myself listening to often. I tried to limit myself to one song per album with one exception. 1) Heavy Horses 2) Wind Up 3) Moths 4) One White Duck 5) Dun Ringill 6) Pibroch Cap in Hand 7) Thick as a Brick 8) Bouree 9) With You There to Help Me 10) Chequered Flag
Great List. I credit your Tull vids for going back through the whole catalog and revisiting all the great tracks. Anyone out there love "Back to the Family" as much as me?
and surely one of their bests is „Wondering aloud“
My son was born in 82. He was exposed to a myriad of bands and different music. All the classic stuff. Of all these Tull was and is still his favorite band. ✌

09. “My God” / Jethro Tull / Album: Aqualung (1971)
08. “Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of The New Day” / Jethro Tull / Album: War Child (1974)
07. "Living In The Past" / Jethro Tull / Album: (Single) (1969)
06. "Cross-Eyed Mary" / Jethro Tull / Album: Aqualung (1971)

02. “Sweet Dream” / Jethro Tull / Album: (Single) (1969)
01. "Nothing Is Easy" / Jethro Tull / Album: Stand Up (1969)
Nice list Brian.
His filthy Jesus, half wild and half civilized, is a guy torn to pieces by poverty, despair, loneliness, erotic desires, hunger, heart disease,
lice, whooping cough, a few cancers, and who even vicious zombies would be afraid to befriend. Even cops won't arrest him for fear of stinking up their
jail cells. What a foetid flower of fornication he is! And wouldn't you think a pariah and social leper like Aqualung would have at least twelve apostles?
Thick as a Brick is one of the best albums I've ever heard. It's a powerful meditation and condemnation of the English class system, the hypocrisy
of teachers, preachers, politicians and professors who can only pretend to be wise (i.e., thick as a brick) while the only person who is wise is one of their victims, Little Milton, the twelve year old poet, who proves their civilization is a joke, and everything they say and do is evil.
Bouree just takes you to another world.
Aqualung remains one of my top five favorite, guitar riffs because it has grit and a melancholy vibe to it;that's it.I love their early stuff!
Hymn 43 would absolutely be there for me too. The Teacher too
Pete,, I was afraid you weren’t going include Minstrel ItG until you had it as your number 1. It is mine also.
"Teacher"'s catchy bass intro with the slide down then building all of the main layered thick riffs with the percussive syncopated rolls is way ahead of its time/changes & unforgettable in my mind.
Well wishes.
Skating away on the Thin Ice of a New Day!!!!!
Yes, my Number one! Musically and lyrically.
Me three. Afterall, everybody's on the stage and your the only person in the audience.
Hunting Girl is amazing. In an interview Martin Barre said it was favorite. A masterpiece
Jethro Tull was the inventor of the seed drill. He was a horticulturist and the best band ever!
Aqualung was the first album that I ever heard from Tull. I went back and bought the first 3 albums and was not dissapointed.
It's Tull time!
10 ) Back Door Angels
9 ) Seal Driver
8 ) Hunting Girl
7 ) Jump Start
6 ) For a Thousand Mothers
5 ) With you there to Help me
4 ) Hymn 43
3 ) TAAB
2 ) Part of the Machine
1 ) Flying Dutchman
Like our ilustrious host, I struggled with only 10 songs!
I have been a Jethro Tull fan since October 1971, and that was because of AQUALUNG'S release!
4 or 5 Aqua songs could have made it, but I wanted my list to be drawn from as diverse as possible among the several Tull catalog classics !
Ring out solstice bells...
Cheerio!
My top ten Tull:
10. Cross Eyed Mary
9. Bouree
8. Songs From The Wood
7. Thick As A Brick
6. Bungle In The Jungle
5. Teacher
4. A New Day Yesterday
3. Skating Away
2. Aqualung
1. Locomotive Breath
Honorable Mentions: Minstrel In The Gallery, Too Old To Rock And Roll, Overseer Overture, Flight From Lucifer, Critique Oblique, Fylingdale Flyer, Ring Out Solstice Bells, Broadsword, Fat Man, Living In The Past, My God, Hymn 43, A Song For Jeffrey, To Cry You A Song, Batteries Not Included, 4WD, The Whistler
Enjoyed that mate..nice one 👍👍🏼👍🏻
You're right, it's really impossible to get down to 10 - but I guess mine would be (from 1-10, very approximately):
To Cry You A Song
We Used To Know
Velvet Green
With You There To Help Me
Play In Time
Wind Up
Nothing Is Easy
Cross-Eyed Mary
My God
No Lullaby
Minstrel is exactly my favourite Tull album as well! Pure epicness, best album ever.
I absolutely adore its cover art; I mean, even if you're not familiar with them, you see that cover, you'll buy the record.
1. Wond'ring Again (*my all-time favorite song btw)
2. Thick as a Brick
3. Wind Up (so glad you recognized this one!)
4. Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day
5. Fires at Midnight
6. One Brown Mouse
7. Moths
8. Cup of Wonder
9. Pibroch (Cap in Hand)
10. Baker St. Muse
Well the best Tull song is Always the one I am just listening to in the Moment...
But seriously:
1) Black Sunday
2) Dark Ages
3) Alive, and well and Living in (I think that (!) was the song that was on Benefit instead of "Teacher" in Europe
4)Chequered Flag (Dead or Alive)
5)Velvet Green
6)Pibroch (Cap in Hand)
7)Mountain Man
8)Roots to Branches
9)Moths
10)A song for Michael Collins, Jeffrey and me
honorable mentions: any song on "Aqualung" (without "Locomotive Breath" I wouldn´t be a Tull fan) / any song on Broadsword and the Beastie (except "Watchin me watching you) / and of Course Thick as a Brick (as a whole) / Reason for waiting / One white Duck / Jump Start / Farm on the Freeway and I guess I forgot half of them
S. Rathgeber ...great selections my friend ...and you went more for the obscure songs ...bravo !! 👍
Alive and Well and Living in became my most listened to song on Spotify last year. It just puts me in a good mood.
Velvet Green, nice!
Benefit is my all time favorite. After that I would put stand up, aqualung, minstrel in the gallery, and thick as a brick in no particular order
MOTHER GOOSE
Baker Street Muse should have been there.Definitely.Thank you for your very interesting chronicle.
this is late but it took me awhile....
1. A Passion Play
2. Thick As A Brick
3. My God
4. Roots To Branches
5. Budapest
6. Aqualung
7. Farm On The Freeway
8. Rock Island
9. Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of A New Day
10. Heavy Horses
A Passion Play is my favorite song too it's just a masterpiece
I respect your list but I cannot imagine any list without Locomotive Breath.
Finally A Passion Play makes a list. Geez. This for me is the ultimate Tull album also. Changed my life in fact
One more honorable mention,A New Day Yesterday, off Stand Up album.
I agree with you about "my god." One of their most under rated tracks imo.
The lyrics! Specially, the early version.
Great list! Honorable mentions. Farm on the Freeway, Budapest, Hunting Girl, Pobrish (Pee Break),
I totally concur with everything on this list, and that's from my perspective as a bassist/singer, as well! Excellent list!
Great list, Pete.
My Top Ten:
1) *Cross-Eyed Mary*
2) *Aqualung* (I know; the obvious choices but I so fucking love them still)
3) *Minstrel In The Gallery*
4) *Hymn 43*
5) *Locomotive Breath*
6) *Living In The Past*
7) *Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll; Too Young To Die*

Stormwatch is an awesome album indeed.
I would add Jack-a-lynn, Crosswords, Overhang, Rover, One Brown Mouse...ok got to stop. Tull is tops.
One of my favorites bands ever. Sad I never saw them live.
You still can
I have always loved "To Cry You a Song"
One of my top 5 bands of all time. The other four are Sabbath, Priest, Purple and Rush.
Great list. Honrable mentions for me would be , Baker St Muse, Wind Up, Part of the Machine, Too Old to Rock and Roll,
Well, this one is hard for me, too, but mostly because, IMO, every single song on "Stand Up" could make up my top 10.
But since I have others I like a lot, I have revised my list, but have only been able to narrow it down to 11 (Thanks, "Stand Up"!!)
A New Day Yesterday
Nothing Is Easy
Fat Man
Back to the Family
We Used to Know
Reasons for Waiting
Thick As A Brick (although I get bored before side 2 is over)
Skating Away on the Thin Ice of the New Day
Farm on the Freeway
Teacher
Minstrel In The Gallery
I also really LOVED "A Passion Play", but it's too hard to separate out a single song.
Great list hard to pick. Saw thick as a brick tour with gentle giant opening for them in Buffalo n.y. Love your lists. Nice t shirt to.
10. No Lullaby (one of their most underrated tracks... heavy and proggy with nimble and fun guitar all throughout)
9. Locomotive Breath (classy intro and the thumping bassline make it one of their most addictive songs)
8. Broadsword (best song from an album that combined a modern synth sound with their natural folk elements without sounding strange at all)
7. Velvet Green (My favorite folk-style song from the superb Songs from the Wood record)
6. Cross-Eyed Mary (amazing grim intro and one of the heaviest riffs with an almost Deep Purple-like twang; some of Ian's best flute work)
5. Cry You a Song (groovy, with one of their most memorable riffs and a lot of nice leads)
4. Dark Ages (a real epic track with killer guitar work that's almost borderline metal)
3. Aqualung (don't care that it's overplayed, it's really their signature song and every part of it sticks to your head... great guitar for 1971's standards)
2. A Passion Play (since Thick as a Brick isn't cheating, I have to pick this one... The whole thing could be studied by scholars for years)
1. Black Satin Dancer (gorgeous semi-ballad with Martin Barre's best solo in my opinion, and some of his best guitar work in general, especially the heavy prog rock breakdown around the four minute mark)
10. A Christmas Song
9. Farm on the Freeway
8. Cross-Eyed Mary
7. Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day
6. Too Old to Rock n' Roll: Too Young to Die
5. Living in the Past
4. A Song for Jeffrey
3. Teacher
2. Thick as a Brick
1. Locomotive Breath
I have a completely different list but it's always interesting to hear other people's.
Happy to hear a Roots to Branches shout out, their last legit great album.
Dot Com was the last. DT and RTB would have made a great double album. Both are still in heavy rotation for me.
What I like most in "Teacher" is the tempo. I really love it. The Stand Up álbum is just fantastic.
Good ears, good brain, good video. Thank You for this.
Big thumbs up on your list, Pete. You've got it nailed. Couldn't agree more. The top ten format is great, but hey I like all your formats. Awesome channel.
thank you sir!
Should have been in the R&R HOF 25 years ago.
Something like this today for me:
10. Cold Wind to Valhalla
9. Black Sunday
8. Fire at Midnight
7. Aqualung
6. Broadsword
5. Baker St Muse
4. Hunting Girl
3. The Wahler's Dues
2. Heavy Horses
1. Wind Up
"Whalers"
Right on point with To Cry You a Song! One of the best, could listen on a loop. Nice shout out on Cold Wind too. Hope Velvet Green , Rainbow Blues and New Day Yesterday were on page two! thanks for the video.
My top 10:
10. Back Door Angels
9. Lick Your Fingers Clean (Aqualung out-take)
8. Dun Ringill
7. Songs from the Wood
6. Moths
5. Mother Goose
4. My God
3. The Whistler
2. Cross-Eyed Mary
1. Aqualung
I have to put Aqualung at number 1. Its one of those songs I never tire of hearing. Around 30 years ago, I had a few neighbors that would sit around and toss back a few beers and listen to music. One of them would bring out his speakers and blast Aqualung from his turntable. A great, fond memory. Always keeps it at #1 for me.
Nice list, and Lick Your Fingers Clean is a GREAT song! Rainbow Blues is another one of those 'extras' that I love, and should have mentioned.
@@seaoftranquilityprog Thank you Pete. Like you said, so many great songs, a list of just 10 is not easy. Nothing is Easy!
I like your list alot,me being a hard rock guy,I would pick very similar. Even the honorable mentions were all favorites of mine also.Well done.
Thanks Bruce! \m/
I just saw this. I appreciate your choices especially your number 1. I'm gonna quickly give you my favorite 10 Jethro Tull songs. I tend to go for the deeper cuts regardless of how famous they are.

5. Mother Goose

Really? Wow, very cool. I need to go and see Martin when he comes around. He was fairly local to me here in NY not long ago but I couldn't make it.
So many to choose from:
1. My God
2. A New Day Yesterday
3. Nothing Is Easy
4. To Cry You A Song
5. Inside
6. Dark Ages
7. Look into the Sun
8. One Brown Mouse
9. Budapest
10. Watching Me, Watching You
If I could put the whole Passion Play album on there as one song, I would.
I see you like STAND UP as I do. Probably on my top two Tull albums.
Inside and one brown mouse 👍🏻
Thanks for this..revisiting the great Jethro Tull….a band that I don't play enuff!! I was a casual fan for years, then around 1999 I became fanatic about them. Starting buying all their albums cheap, used, like for $1.00. I even saw them live around that time. Over past 18 years , that kind of fell of my radar. So, this was fun. I need to dig out those tunes again. Always loved the guitar of Martin Barre. Great list. I would have added Witches Promise.
10 - Bungle In The Jungle
9 - Teacher
8 - Song For Jeffery
7 - Lap Of Luxury
6 - Living In The Past
5 - Thick As A Brick (entire version)
4 - Cross-Eyed Mary

9 Automotive Engineering
8 Strange Avenues
7 Heavy Water
6 Bends like a Willow
5 Dangerous Veils
4 Bad-eyed and Loveless
3 Big Dipper
2 Rare and Precious Chain
1 Seal Driver
Heavy Water is my favourite off whatever the album is....
@@greghansell5115 yeah it has a hypnotic riff. It's from Rock Island.

1. Heavy Horses
2. Songs from the Wood
3. Hunting Girl
4. The Whistler
5. Black Sunday
6. Awol
7. Locomotive Breath
8. To cry you a song
9. Flyingdale Flyer

Tull are one of my fav. bands and it's very hard to list just 10 of their songs. I've left out some of their most obvious ones.
10. Dun Ringill
9. Elegy
8. Locomotive Breath
7. Budapest
6. The Third Hoorah
5. Salamander
4. Overseer Overture (Passion Play)
3. Rover
2. Thick As A Brick
Great list, and enjoying these Top Tens! Can't wait for Kansas, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden & Judas Priest.
Great list. I was afraid My God would be forgotten
Once you said that I thought; this man knows what he is talking about!!
The haunting, " With you there to help me" from Benefit is a fav and a song that just doesn't want to end!
A nice list... I enjoy your channel
Great list man! My top 10:
1. Heavy Horses
2. North Sea Oil
3. Hym 43
4. Songs from the Wood
5. Mother Goose
6. Aqualung
7. Witches Promise
8. Song for Jeffrey
9. Too old to Rocknroll
10. Hunting Girl
I'm glad "Flying Dutchman" made honorable mention, at least, since I consider it the finest flute work Ian Anderson recorded during Tull's 'classic' period.
1. Inside

Great list Pete. I would include Living In the Past, War Child and Skating Away in mine.
I used to do lists like this all the time to pass time either in front of a canvas or at some mundane work ty for the vids. One brown mouse, skating away, rainbow blues, steel monkey, budepest, thick as....just a few Id choose.
My top 10
1. Farm on the freeway
2. Budapest
3. Jump start
4. Minstrel in the gallery
5. One white duck
6. Rocks on the road
7. Ears of tin
8. Aqualung
9. Living in the past
So many to choose from:
1) My God
2) Flying Dutchman
3) Minstrel in the Gallery
4) Witches Promise
5) Cup of Wonder
6) Nothing is Easy
7) Wondring Again
8) The Third Hoorah
9) Valley
10) And Further On
Apologies to 50 other songs that did not make it!
To Cry You a Song I agree is a highly under appreciated song. It is one of my favorites as well.
My God I can't argue with your list because I love Tull more than life itself. My list would have included Reasons For Waiting which has the greatest strings ever in a rock song. Glad you at least mentioned Wind Up since it's the greatest song ever written by the hand of man.
Yes, it is great. It pained me to leave it out of my Top 10, but it's basically at 11, and if you ask me next week, it might sneak its way in!
I assume you're aware of the Jethro Tull/Walking Dead connection.
@@MBonfire1 yep
@@MBonfire1 What's the connection?

Hey Pete, really glad you got to Tull, my favorite band next to YES. I pretty much agree with your list. I love everything they did up until Ian started losing his voice. One of my favorite albums you didn't mention was Crest of a Naive. A great song from that disc is Dogs in the Midwinter, a light very catchy tune.

8: Rainbow Blues
7: Velvet Green
6: Moths
5: Another Harry's Bar
4: Broadford Bazaar
3: Thick as a Brick
2: Cheap Day Return
1: Baker St.
Benefit is my favourite Tull album, and the first i listened to! Do a Van der graaf Generator ranking, please!
During the course of your presentation I KNEW it's gotta be "Minstrel" - and indeed, what a great album this is!
I loved all of the 70s songs by Tull, but here are ten of my favorites that I still find myself listening to often. I tried to limit myself to one song per album with one exception.
1) Heavy Horses
2) Wind Up
3) Moths
4) One White Duck
5) Dun Ringill
6) Pibroch Cap in Hand
7) Thick as a Brick
