Fun fact: Irving Berlin was still alive in 1983 when Taco's cover of this Song was released, which made Berlin, at 95, the oldest living songwriter to have a hit on the Billboard Charts during his lifetime.
God I really want him to have heard the Taco cover
Wow he lived a whole century :o
This was like 50 cents “in da club” of the 1930s.
what do you know it appears from your timeline your sentences were tapped just under 3months ago and prior to tht you suggest the 1930's missing the apostrophe b.t.w. and your comment is from a millinial age group. Here is a suggestion grow some beard drink an Irish stout. and have alittle respect from a generation of the roaring 1920's.
@@ginal.7420 Meanwhile with the advance of years comes a contrasting permission to drop vowels and spaces wherever we feel like? Don't be pedantic. It's not fun.
@@ginal.7420 What a snotty comment. I'm no spring chicken myself, but I realise the necessity of respecting the younger generations. He is actually making a fair comment.
@@ginal.7420 1930s doesn't have an apostrophe chicken head. If you want to make it a possessive, for example 1930's music, that's fine. You've also misspelt miillenial and beard is a countable noun. So, please don't criticise other peoples' writing when you can't put together one correct paragraph, even with modern technology to help you.

Dear god! First I listened to Taco's cover, thinking it was the original, then found Fred Astaire's cover, and thought THAT was the original. Now I learn that they were both covers of a Depression era song!?
Guess you haven't seen Young Frankenstein singing it yet? Have a good laugh 😉
Same
Likewise, haha.

@@Njordin2010 as long as you stay curious...
Wonder what inspired Irving Berlin to compose this song. Incredible genius.
... the roaring twenties of course 🙂
it was something like he saw poor black people dressing rich and made a satire song on it or something
@@julianladmano9158I don't believe that's true.
@@TheRealNewWhirledOrder sounds real enough for the 20s and 30s
@@Plymouth_Belvedere Whether you believe it "sounds true" or not, I can find no evidence of this.
Divide and conquer propaganda was being pushed back then too.
Lyrics:
If you're blue, and you don't know where to go to
Why don't you go where Harlem sits?
Puttin' on the Ritz
Spangled gowns upon the bevy of high browns
From down the levy, all misfits
Putting' on the Ritz
That's where each and every lulu-belle goes
Every Thursday evening with her swell beaus
Rubbin' elbows
Come with me and we'll attend their jubilee
And see them spend their last two bits
Puttin' on the Ritz
Surprised no one picked up on the meaning of those lyrics.

I can't find any trace of the lyrics being about anything other than fashion. You may be reading more into it than there actually is.
It was the word and word is the word...
100 years later we can still hear the recording of rhis song, true bless :)
1930 - 2020 ===> 90 YEARS!!!😲😲😲👏👏👏
The music didn't improve though 😂
I, too, watched that Vsause video

We are missing out not having a "Putting on the rizz" parody so that the youngsters could enjoy this oldie.
I'm 27 and I adore this. I just got into 20s music, especially Irving Berlin and Django Reinhardt, thanks to Felix Yusupov/the Russian tv show Karamora and Ballet Russes.
There are now like 15 queer autistics who are obsessed with Felix Yusupov thanks to that show, and ultimately pinterest lol. There would probably be many more if there was a official translation. It definitely has Interview with a Vampire and Hannibal vibes, I think it would get popular on Tumblr
Why would queer autistic people watch russian shows in the first place? Considering what russia does with gays...
I don’t know, Young Frankenstein did it pretty well.
wouldn't be the first time, but i agree
LMFAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOO WTFFF 😭😭😭😭
Irving Berlin’s “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” a 1928 ragtime joint that was the first song ever performed in a film by an interracial ensemble. [Will Smith autobiography page 100]
So to put down the notion of him being racist. Thanks.
when I was
Probably the version by Taco Ockerse.
Sah die tNz Einlage von fred astaire.
Die ist genauso phenomenal
Ich war auch klein und voll begeistert von beiden Tanz und Musik
Legendär und unvergessen.
Heard this on Jeeves and Wooster first. So many great versions.
Was looking for this comment❤
What episode?
Why, it does make ya feel like a million dollar trooper!!!!!
Based song
Listen to both versions by Irving & Taco, & see which one appeals ...if both ... even better!!! 😃
Nice song
I love this version the best :)
It there is a better version of this classic, I sure would like to hear it. Even if so, it hasn't been recorded yet.
Aeolian Hall, Robbie Williams did a pretty nice cover. He's no Irving Berlin of course but it's 1000 times better than the tacky Taco version!
I also like the funny version from "Young Frankenstein".
Try Harry Richman.
@@angelafriedemann6722 i agree i wish there was a full version of gene wilder his voice is so calming
I would argue that the Fred Astaire take on it is rather good...and quite possibly the iconic one.
@@angelafriedemann6722
Omg, i love the Taco-Version :D :D :D.
For some reason, woke up with this song in my head, had to look it up. 🤣
It just captures the era so perfectly. I love Ella Fitzgerald's version of this song too.
He looks a lot like Charles Aznavour. I mean the picture.
Kind of.
Ja! Charles Aznavour aus Tjumen in New York!
it's Aznavour looking like him
Irving Berlin, HE IS A CHARLES.
You can really hear Klezmer influence!
I like the Taco version, but the lyrics in this version are *WAY* better!
Perfect rendition of course. Thanks.

Irving Berlin was like the Max Martin of his day lol.

La version q hace Taco es bastante ok
When did they change "where Harlem sits" to "where fashion sits"? And where is the line: "trying hard to look like Gary Cooper" ?
Harlem sits was in the original version in 1930, it was changed to reflect how white snobs on park Avenue lived in 1946 and the line about Gary Cooper was added then.
The original is making fun of black people dressing up, that was considered a bit tasteless later on and it was rewritten to be about mocking the wealthy
@@daveunbelievable6313 Only a massive racist could have made a racial connection to these lyrics.
OMFG!
I always loved this song but since the invason of the Ukraine by Russia I don't like "Putin on the Ritz" anymore ... ;-)
