- What is syringomyelia? Syringomyelia is a cystic enlargement of the spinal cord. It typically starts medially and enlarges outwards, eventually damaging the spinothalamic tract, which is a part of the spinal cord that sends sensory signals about pain, pressure, temperature, and touch to the brain.

I wish mine would lead to loss of pain signals. My whole body always hurts. Mine is from T4-T10.
Right there with ya, TAZ. Sending you comfort. 🙏
Mine starts at C-2, and goes to L-5. I just learned about this aspect of Arachnoiditis.
I know I couldn't possibly be that fortunate. Loss of constant pain? A pipe dream.
There's so very little support or relief for Syringomyelia. It's crushing. 😮💨😞
I agree it’s so rare people don’t know much about it the hardest part is when bad doctors decide to rob people off which I hate. I was diagnosed with syringomyelia when I was 7 years old in 2017 due to a car crash. I am now 14 and have less symptoms that I had before don’t worry it gets better. :)
sending love.❤
@@BloodyBeetle Thank you BB. Sorry about your accident! Your age certainly helps due healing purposes, but I'm many decades older and things heal more slowly now. Best thing I've learned is to maintain your health and mobility, and stay at a lower weight. Best to you Hon! 🙏🕊️
@@BloodyBeetlewhat made you symptoms get better, and where was your syrinx? If it’s ok to ask. I’m struggling right now
"Great video on Syringomyelia! Raising awareness about this rare condition is essential for early diagnosis and treatment. Thanks for sharing this valuable information."
Thanks for teaching people the importance of knowing what syringomyelia is I’m currently a 14 year old girl who was in a car crash in 2017 which caused a fluid filled cyst (syrinx/syringomyelia) in my spinal cord when I was 7 years old, thanks for teaching people about this. ❤
Most welcome 🙏🏼
I have a syrinx from my T1 to T15 thats 5mm in diameter. I have all of the symptoms minus scoliosis. Just diagnosed. What a nightmare
May you heal fast.
Osmosis never disappoints with short and to the point, effective lectures!! Wonderfully done!
Many thanks! 🥰❤️🙏🏼
-syrinx damages anterior motor horns(contain lower motor neuron cell bodies) and cause LMN signs at level of lesion i.e. B/L Upper limbs
-damage to anterior commisure will cause loss of pain and temperature sensation in B/L upper limbs(presents with frequent cuts and burns on hands)
---IN LATER STAGES--when syrinx has expanded enough
-damage to corticospinal tract at C8-T1(common location of syrinx) can cause UMN signs in lower limbs
-damage to DCML(medial parts that convey info from lower limbs vs lateral parts that have info on upper limbs) will cause loss of vibration and proprioception from lower limbs
-Scoliosis due to paralysis of paravertebral muscles
EXAM TIP:look for "cape like" loss of pain, temp and weakness with scoliosis!
I understand that the CSF can get back into the circulation through the arachnoid villi, but how does the CSF that has entered the central canal get back to the subarachnoid space?
At 4:45 does syringomyelia damage the upper motor neuron fibres in the corticospinal tract or the lower motor neurons in the anterior horns of gray matter? The signs cited are LMN but talking about the corticospinal tract seems confusing here
Must be the anterior horn cells based on the symptoms.
Anterior horn cells (alpha motor neurons) only!
yes it says wrong in the video!
-syrinx damages anterior motor horns(contain lower motor neuron cell bodies) and cause LMN signs at level of lesion i.e. B/L Upper limbs
Pressure sensation is not carried by spinothalamic tract...
What exactly do you mean by that?
I have a syrinx from c5-c6. My shoulders always hurt and feel stiff. My muscles feel so weak I’m trying so hard to strengthen them
i got surgery after this I'm better
You reminded me why I hate neurology and physiology of the CNS
i like neurology on the neuron level, but when it comes to the spinal cord it makes me mad, its too specific, complex and annoying lol
laughing in endocrinology and nephrology
❤❤❤
I have this and i do have pain/ inflammation every day.
Beautifully explained 👏
Thank you, Wael! 🙂
one word for you "GENIUS"
Excellent presentation!
Thank you! Cheers! 🙌🏼 💕 ✨
