I am a nurse with a long, segmented syringomyelia. This has been the best explanation I have come across about how symptoms are caused. Thank you.

Fantastic video! Would be useful to know about potential motor symptoms. Thank you.

Excellent explanation, many thanks. I would add that syringomyelia is quite rare, affects both men and women the same and tends to present in the 30s or 40s.

Nice explanation of the symptoms. Having this at the C6 level I can add tingling/numbness of fingertips and toes as well as pain between shoulder blades and heart. Long walks, physiotherapy with rubber bands, swimming backward and sitting on gymnastic ball instead of chair at work, using small roll behind neck while sleeping instead of pillowcase; are all helpful simple therapies. Controversial and questionable, I have also tried to elevate salt consumption, which brings higher risks of high blood pressure but could draw liquids from syrinx into bloodstream without operation. Hopefully allowing syrinx to collapse upon itself to have a chance to heal. Again "saline" therapy is controversial but seems to have helped. So far I could postpone surgery.

Thanks for the comment. I really hope the therapy works for you. We use these videos to primarily educate medical students about the relevant clinical anatomy. Thank you for sharing your story and we wish you well.

Muuip could you give me a run down of your first symptoms and how yours was discovered. I have just been given a possible diagnosis of a Syrinx and just had MRI done and now being sent to Neurology about diagnosis. I've had back problems for many years and had a decompression for Cauda Equina Syndrome about for years ago. Trying to find if my symptoms line up with those of other Syrinx sufferers as I don't get headaches that a lot of people say they do. I have numbness and pins and needles in fingers in both hands, my left leg is numb and my toes are numb with pins and needles, it only really affects my left lower limbs. I have an awful pain between the shoulder blade with a stiff neck that can be fine one day and the next I'm in extreme pain again. My lower back had always had pain. I get pins and needles in my face and the tip of my nose( this has only happened a few times)
I have woke up a few times at night and can't feel or move my arms and hands, and the dizzy spells are getting worse. I'm in the UK and our health service is at capacity so things don't move quick enough for a quick diagnosis, just wondering if you could shed some light. Kindest regards

This is not completely accurate. I have severe permanent damage from 3 large syrnixes in the cervical spine. Permanent pain, loss of temperature and pressure sensation *unilaterally* in a cape-like presentation of my left upper body. Trunk to the bottom of my face, left breast all the way down left arm. Concentrated damage in my 3 outermost left fingers and especially concentrated in my left scapula/subscapula. I had an especially severe case and never regained motor function or sensation after decompression surgery 16 years ago. I'm not a scientist, but I wanted to chime in and say that it is not always a bilateral presentation. Thank you for the video.

I have it spread across a few of my lower thoracic. Symptoms seems to be very alike except that I am affected in my legs and feet rather than my upper body, and as a result I have quite a bit of problems with balance and sometimes even walking.

i was born with spina bifida myelomenigocele, Then a few years ago developed symptoms of arnold chiari malformation & a syrinx, i get the pressure headaches if im not careful & other random stuff but the one thing i'm wondering about is can any of those things cause weight loss, or muscle loss? i'm sure i'm losing one or the other but finding it difficult to find anywhere with weighing scales accessible by wheelchair so i can check, there is one place, the wheelchair centre but its shut for obvious reasons. its been 1 year since i last got weighed.

I’ve read that with syringomyelia you are supposed to avoid neck flexion. Can you provide reasoning for this?

I was not symptomatic when diagnosed
I was seriously assaulted at work as a nurse and 11 months after the assault my shoulder wasn't healing so they did an MRI
I have one at C3 at 10cm and two lower down in the T there are 5 cm each
I was also diagnosed with trigeminal schwannoma in meckels cave, on the brain stem and entwining into my cerebellum
Im the only patient in my state with these two rare conditions
My Drs have not seen the two conditions together before
    They have seen them separately
