She's actually been in the business for a while - writing, for Beyonce, John Legend, Rihanna, Jax Jone, many others. Her record label wanted to keep her in a box cause she was such a successful writer... In the end she protested and walking away. Then released an album completely independet that just won 6 Brit awards, the most of any artist ever. Imagine having a voice like that and being told by a label that you can't use it....
She's from London. Been a writer for others for many years & released some singles. But up until recently trapped in a record contract that would not let her release her own album. Now she is independent & releasing her music on her own. Her first album just went crazy in the UK but the lack of a major label has kept her a little under the radar around the world. She is very much leaning into jazz at the moment & is doing a lot of touring in the US with a big group of musicians doing a big band type of thing. She is as you can see a bit special.
also important to note she signed a 10 ALBUM DEAL. so the company broke their contract pretty much immediately when they signed her, so they really had no choice but to let her go THANK GOD. im happy it all worked out
Raye is just her! so glad you're reacting to her, she's one of my favorite artists nowadays. I highly suggest you her performance at BRIT Awards 2024 Medley ('Ice Cream Man', 'Prada' & 'Escapism').
Raye is the artist herself :) she just loves live bands . shes been consistently performing with this group of background singers too i think .. theyre called the flame's collective
P.P.S: The drummer is Matt Brooks (#mattjabrooks), a highly professional session musician. He can be seen on many of RAYE's live performances because he loves to play for her, and will whenever he can make it (just like the rest of the band, who are all sought after session musicians, so the "brand" RAYE is just her (Rachel Agatha Keen), but the band was touring with her a lot during 2024 and before, and RAYE always gives them credits and shouts them out on stage by name, or at least as a group ("Make some noise for the horn section!"). In a comment to RAYE's incredible rendition of "Man's World" (James Brown) at the Montreux Jazz Festival Matt wrote: "It’s such an honour to play the drums for an artist of this calibre. I get to hear Raye sing night after night on tour and I’m still in awe and a massive fan myself. Once in a generation artist. The REAL DEAL! 🔥" - Bro must know it, he sits right behind her every other night... Peace out!
English Dad, Ghanian-Swiss Mom, musical family, church music background, her faith she credits with getting through the difficult times in her life and struggles to become an artist seen, heard and recognised as a musician, music is everything to her especially live performance with her band and other live musicians, releasing her debut album which has always been her dream now means she's finally being seen and more and more people are beginning to know who she is and appreciate her talent largely due to tic tok social media and word of mouth recommendations, discovering her is peppered with comments like Wow, who is she, where did she come from, why have I never heard of her more people need to hear her I have to share this, she's not only a great singer and writer but a beautiful soul with a great personality and why so many root for her and become fans, her journey to this point has been tough but now she's really on her way on her terms and we're all along for the ride 😀
So RAYE is the singer and she is amazing. One of my favorite artists at the moment. You can catch the whole Royal Albert hall show right here on TH-cam and the newest Montreux Jazz Festival set as well. She has such an amazing energy! Glad to see she is finally getting all the love and recognition she deserves.
Hey MrLBoyd, I've watched A LOT of your reactions to all kinds of artists and music, but this definitely was one of the most pleasurable ones I've watched from your channel - but then, how not as RAYE is definitely the most pleasurable, adorable, insanely talented vocalist AND musician who descended from heaven in a long time, imo Amy Winehouse was the last of that caliber, before we had Nina Simone (RAYE's favorite artist), Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday... of course we also got Streisand and Adele, Beyoncé, the Xtina, but those are in another category, I'm talking real jazz and R&B artists... RAYE is 26, and on a straight path to immortality, first GRAMMY(s) in 2025 are a must, else the GRAMMYs are dead... for your questions: 1.) Musical family, both parents vocalists and musicians at a local church, all of her three sisters singers as well. Decided to attend the BRIT school at an early age (focus on performing arts), dropped out early as she couldn't wait to start her career. First major hit at age 17 with Jax Jones "You Don't Know Me" - just as me you might have heard that song but not be aware it was hers... Around that time she fell into some very wrong hands: Signed with a toxic label (Polydor England). They promised her four albums, what she got instead was: no album, sexual assault, reduction on a dance feature, selling her songs to major artists without giving her the credits she deserved, she wrote for (among many others): John Legend, Little Mix, Beyoncé... but she was told no one would want to listen to her songs the way she wanted to sing and arrange them, her themes were to "dark" and honest, she needed more bpm, she needed to put off weight and show more skin, show more bootie and tits... all of that lead to her falling into depression and some habits that were "unhealthy", as she puts it... Finally in 2022 she broke free from that contract and released her debut album in 2023, first studio "My 21st Century Blues" co produced by Mike Sabath (insane production and vocal layering), and later on a live version "My 21st Century Symphony" with her band plus a full orchestra plus a 30 head youth choir. The video you just watched was shot during the recording of her opening song for that live album. So she played the Royal Albert Hall not because she's famous, but because she wanted a live recording so badly, she went for it, bought a slot at the Hall, hired The Heritage Orchestra and that choir and told her fans via social media to get there on a certain if they wanted to witness and make some noise for a live recording of her album... She did this on her own, without a fucking label sitting on diamonds, and the success was overwhelming: First single "Escapism" #1 UK and charting on many other countries, even the US... in 2024 that album and her art got her nominations for seven (never happened before...) categories at the Brit Awards, and she won the Awards in six of them (never happened before, Adele had four in her best year...: Album of the year, artist of the year, best new artist, best songwriter (first ever female, never happened before...) best R&B artist, single of the year... She's a legend in the making, you better not sleep on her any longer, else I might get kinda mad with you... :) Peace out, love from BavaRAYEa!
@@poolhallshark thanks buddy, the RAYEffect did not prevent me from producing numerous TGA's though, but I'm too lazy to correct them right now... I think the general direction is clear as it is...
So one of the women who raised her was her grandmother from Ghana in West Africa. Her Mum is from Ghana and Swiss ancestry and her Da is from England where she was born. She's won many Brit awards. She performed on Saturday Night Live. While well known in England she's growing by leaps and bounds internationally. Her rendition of It's a Mans World will hurt you in ways that are RIGHT but not COMFORTABLE. She was on the Kelly Clarkson Show last week and performed Oscar Winning Tears live.
P.S. Eight days ago she performed James Brown's "Man's World" at the AMA 50th Anniversary Special and she absolutely nailed that, on her knees in devotion, totally insane 20 sec belt with various runs up and down the scales and everybodys' spines. You should definitely watch that one next... James is smiling down on her in awe and happiness, with Nina Simone by his side with an even broader grin on her face, two angels with a stank face...
Watch her sing that same song at the live at North Sea jazz festival. That’s my favorite performance so far of that song by her. She also did a really great one at the Montreux jazz festival. I have to rewatch what she did at the AMA’s, because even though I’m sure she did great I get the feeling it wasn’t as good as those two. Plus other fans have said so.
@@Rosannasfriend RAYE's performances are always very apt to the occasion, for me, as a jazz lover, NSJ was special, and her set and the setting at Montreux were exceptionally beautiful, also the Pukkelpop version was very intense, she was surfing the special energy of that audience. For a TV format and a broader audience she had to shorten and sharpen it, add some more pop elements, also two core members of her band were missing, and imo she did exactly what was required here, reading the comments on the video tells this gained her a lot of new fans in the US. Advanced fans like me and you wouldn't mind her doing a twenty minute version of any of her songs, would you? - But I think it's perfect for any new audience, not just jazz enthusiasts... Anyway MrLBoyd only does dono requests, so we'll see which version it'll be whenever he gets around to that song... Meanwhile we may listen to and compare all of her versions, I find it thrilling to find out what she does differently in each performance and figure out why... incredible artistic sensibility, she always delivers completely in tune with the occasion and audience...
Finally getting the flowers she deserves after writing for so many other artists. Stuck in a record contract pigeon holed into making a certain type of music she wasn’t enjoying. Now independent and absolutely cleaned up at the Brits (awards) in the UK earlier this year ❤❤❤.
Thank you so much Mr Boyd I’d never heard of her till I saw your video Friday. She is amazing and she writes her own material and writes for other singers 🔥🔥🔥🔥 And like so many of the modern singers like Ren and Tom Macdonald she’s independent and writing what she wants. The independent artists just have that authenticity about their music, which has been missing from a lot of the mainstream signed artists
You’re 100% right - Raye’s talent is through the roof. And her determination to get out into the world is a lesson for all of us. Judging from her appearance on the Kelly Clarkson Show last week, she does seem to be breaking through in the U.S.
LOL loved it, RAYE is amazing, so happy she is getting the airplay and recognition now since sacking her label and going completely independent (shame artists are having to battle so hard to get her albumn out - she was restricted to only write for others by the label for 7 years!!!) RAYE's year 100% truly deserving this - thank you for your great reaction
Hah! We just thought we'd keep her to ourselves for a while! This concert is extraordinary if you can find a way to watch the whole thing. Also Louis Theroux interviewed her in his last documentary series on the BBC, definitely worth watching. She's just class.
Raye is AMAZING! You should react to her recent performance of 'It's A Man's World' on the 50th AMA awards stage or her cover of Nina Simone's 'Feeling Good'.
This is the London Philharmonic orchestra, the Royal Albert Hall, filmed by the BBC. She has a backing group who have been with her for sometime and Raye is her name, not the band. An amazing artist.
Tooting. It's a district in South London rather than the bodily function that American viewers may bring to mind. Very talented, but my goodness she was at the coal face for a while before she struck fame. She is really good at singing, a real musician and she _loves_ performing with musicians instruments and real instruments, as well as having a whole contemporary vibe going on. Classic, but a bit gangster. It's scintillating combination!
Curious how you think she compares with Chinchilla. Both get compared to Adele all the time, but very few do the direct comparison. I hear a lot of Amy Winehouse in both of them, and a fair bit of Adele to boot.
I love both of them, two utterly great vocalists and lyricists and musicians, two complete artists. The main difference in my ears: RAYE in her core is a true jazz artist, raised on Nina Simone, Etta, Ella, Billie and Amy, but she can branch out to numerous genres with ease, R&B, Pop, Hip Hop, even Classical, whereas Chinchilla is basically pop, fed on Beyoncé, Xtina and the likes, I don't hear much jazz or swing in her delivery. Both are incredibly versatile, but for me as a decades long jazz lover in the end it comes down to RAYE, if I were to take only one of them on a lonely island. But as long as I'm allowed I really enjoy listening to both (and some more like AJ or Haley Reinhart, Mon Laferte or Sohyang...) as diversity really makes life more colorful and beautiful, and total greatness is total greatness no matter the horse it rides...
She’s been writing for years, for John Legend, Charlie XCX, Beyoncé, etc…but she decided she could do it better herself. The planet DOES know her, it’s just the US that doesn’t. What’s going on is that the US record industry has been gate-keeping for the last 20 years or so and has been shutting artists from across The Pond out. The reason why people like her, Ren and Pete & Bas are getting the attention more stateside is because they’re independent and the internet…and there’s nothing the record industry can do about that.
