It's crazy that 2 people actually survived all of that all the way down to the water. Its horrific what they must have experienced. One can only hope that they were unconcious atleast.
Just like Pan Am 103 where a few people survived but died shortly after. "the pilot and at least 147 other victims possibly lived until they struck the ground"
@@titan9259 yea I remember that they found some bodies with grass in there palms meaning they survived until they hit the ground and tried to pull what’s left of themselves to safety
I thought the same thing. They must have been in some part of the plane until they hit the water. Like you, I hope they were at least unconcious, I wouldn't even want to imagine the fear and desperation they might have felt otherwise.
This was so dumb, when the bomb detector made a weird sound repeatedly on on a bag they should of pulled it or at least looked into it. I'm not sure why they cared if the sound wasn't exactly the same as what they were shown with a match, something was clearly tripping the bomb detector.
Precisely. It's like most bags don't trip that sensor. Like, they should have thought, hey, you know the majority of bags go through this thing just fine. But this bag doesn't. Why.
Arguably it happened twice. Black boxes only transmit for a certain amount of time. The mix up over the higher frequency could have cost them the black boxes (as far as I know the ocean floor does not produce radio waves? So what in heaven's name did they think it was?!)
I'll bet they were hiring warm bodies for the cheapest legal rate for the luggage security. If they are skimping on training they likely aren't hiring people for their critical thinking skills.

This is exactly why when all four of us in my family used to travel together, my mom would put her and I on one plane, and my brother and my dad on another, in case God forbid the worst were to happen we wouldn't all be lost at once.
Kind of extreme considering how unlikely an airplane crash is. Even so, I'd rather be with my family if the worst were to happen. Do you also drive in two separate cars when headed to your destination? You're far more likely to die statistically as you probably already know
It’s actually not uncommon for parents to travel separately so that in any event one parent would survive. I think that many could agree, regardless of statistics (and I’m a statistician), some have more fear of death (vs. injury like most car accidents) in air travel vs. auto.
The families of the dead said the Canadian government didn't seem to care about them at all and sent their condolences to India even though nearly all of the passengers on board were Canadian citizens. They said it was the people of Ireland that were so welcoming and kind to them when they came to pick up their remains in Cork.

Exactly. Also, if she was worried about the other people in line, still waiting to check their baggage, just have the guy step to side to "wait for his brother" while you work on checking in the rest of the line. Even if it just an irate customer, it is an automatic felony to cause a disruption in an airport.
I think what's even more devastating about this crash is the fact that airlines and governments across the world didn't take more safety measures to prevent tragic plane bombings. Pan Am 103 was bombed 3 years after this flight and it crashed into the civilian community of Lockerbie killing over 250 people both on the plane and on the ground. So many people had to die in order for these lessons to be learned.
There is another documentary which talks about the pilots of other planes who told the tower that they saw a plane exploding in midair - why were they making such a mystery of what might have happened to Air India ?

They need a better system than racial profiling and name-matching. The most effective tools they use are the sniffer dogs (which can miss things) and the x-ray machines (which can show "Suspicious items" that turn out not to be suspicious). Ok so I work for the Airlines and there aren’t “stricter” restrictions on carrying bags forward on connecting flights. I’ve non reved many times and my bag will hop plane to plane even if I’m not on it. Same for so many passengers who find their bags here before they are or even more that arrive and their bags didn’t arrive with them. Probably 70% of standby passengers arrive with their bags having already been here or not yet arrived. There’s no “stricter” regulations as far as that goes for sure.
It only applies to international flights, I'm a ramp agent at Terminal 3 Toronto Pearson, we only pull bags if a passenger doesn't show if the flight is international, if it's domestic, off it goes.
Obviously that one investigator is not happy about the deaths that were caused due to Singh’s act of terrorism; This was probably a huge case for him and each and every finding was an accomplishment and he’s either proud of his findings and hard work even after all those years or he can be a naturally enthusiastic person.

FYI a “flail” injury is NOT an injury to the pelvis, etc….it is a term - “flail chest” - used to describe rib fractures - more specifically, multiple fractures to three or more consecutive ribs. This causes the chest to become unstable and to move in a paradoxical manner, in that attempts to breathe cause the chest wall to move inward, rather than outward on each inspiration. This impedes breathing, and when severe, impairs effective respiration altogether.
Why are there bits of the re-enactments that stop, turn black and white, and play a jarring noise? What even IS that? Is it to make sure you’re still paying attention?

No baggage leaves without a passenger tied to it? The amount of baggage that I’ve had get lost or forgotten and then get put on another plane to show up later is incredible. That rule obviously didn’t stand.
It does. You would know if you've ever sat at the gate while they retrieve luggage from the hold because somebody didn't show up. I've had it happen a few times Human error in baggage handling is a separate issue.
With the amount of episodes I've watched where they have to go diving for these boxes. I feel someone needs to start having some kind of float device or ejection system on these suckers to make them easier to find.

I am just glad Air India was not flying above those two planes otherwise the body count will be potentially a lot higher. All it needs are just a few pieces to puncture the planes below.
I can't believe that that security guy just let that go when it made ANY noise!!! None of the other bags made any sound so it should have been checked out further since it made ANY noise at all!!! It was a criminal act. At least they figured out who they were and dealt with them. However, how, moronic it is that a group of people from one place, living in another place demanding to have a homeland in another attacks a group of people with nothing to do with it at all.
This was before 911 or even the Lockerbie disaster. Air travel at the time was very different from nowadays. So please do not judge too harshly on the ground crew handling the luggage.
I saw someone comment that they didn't understand why there was such a long winded investigation when other planes reported that they saw the plane explode. I know it seems odd, but just like in a homicide investigation done by a police department, they have to rule out every single possibility so that others won't come back and question their outcome. And an explosion may be cause by the fuel in the tanks igniting, it could be an after effect of an explosive decompression, there could be many answers. Every answer has to be ruled out before they come to a final conclusion. Also, I've seen a lot of people mentioned the fact that Canada didn't really seem to treat this as a Canadian occurrence, and I understand partly that it was an Air India plane and there were Indian passengers, but the fact that there were Canadian passengers and they barely seem to acknowledge it really blows my mind.
Wow back in the day where you could bomb a plane without actually being on the plane. That would never happen today. Now they won’t even take off unless every checked bag has an assigned passenger who actually boarded.
Unfortunately, terrorists are still trying to find ways from putting bombs in shoes and underwear to trying to disguise them as soft drinks and cargo packages.

Why.

I consider myself fairly well informed on aircraft, and I had never even heard of the fifth engine mount until today.
I always love watching the hunt for the black boxes in all of these crashes... sometimes, the things the investigators have to do to retrieve the boxes are just so mind blowing and fascinating

Preventable. The evidence was clear. Should have been investigated further in Canada.
The families of the dead said the Canadian government didn't seem to care about them at all and sent their condolences to India even though nearly all of the passengers on board were Canadian citizens. They said it was the people of Ireland that were so welcoming and kind to them when they came to pick up their remains in Cork.
The Irish are a good lot. Me nans was from Belfast.
Anyone interested in this case should watch Air India 182, an excellent documentary by the CBC produced in 2008. Which is also the same year that this Mayday episode was released.

Yeah I think I saw that one. A little better
Why did that ticket agent not call security? A simple phone call could have prevented this tragedy.
Exactly. Also, if she was worried about the other people in line, still waiting to check their baggage, just have the guy step to side to "wait for his brother" while you work on checking in the rest of the line. The worst that could happen is he'll try to complain to management, and still be told he cannot check in his bag. I cannot stand customers who bully or browbeat just to get their way. If security were to be involved that day, the fake passenger would've been caught.
What happened to the ticket agent? That was a huge mistake she made and she has to live with that guilt.
Funny how they moved the guilt from her. She must've sucked .....well
@@violagentsch And the money they most likely laid at her feet while she was sucking well must have made her feel so much better. Seriously, if I did something like that, I could NOT live with it. That grief would be hard, fast and constant!! I don't know how ANYONE could.
Both her and the security agent who ignored the beeping of the bomb detection device. Astronomical failures, both of them. I just wish someone in line behind the bullying "passenger" had spoken up in defense of the ticket agent. If just one person had said, "Stop bullying her, she's not going to check your bag through and that's that! Now get out of line!" I'm sure she wouldn't have caved. Several times I've spoken up for people in service positions when they were being bullied by a customer, and the customer always backs off once they realize they're outnumbered and there's someone talking back to them who they can't report to the manager.
Probably works for regular bullies, this was a terrorist intent on getting his bomb on the plane. Hindsight is 20/20
My grandparents were flying from toronto to london that day on a different flight, this scared the crap out of my mom as she had no idea what was going on, their flight was only about an hour behind this flight. It is also a 2 hour drive from Heathrow to their home so she had hours to wait to hear from them.
Unfortunately, terrorists are still trying to find ways to bomb airplanes and sometimes they have succeeded like Pan Am 103 and Metrojet 9268. The most recent bombing was on Daallo Airlines Flight 159 in 2016. However, they managed to land safely. The sole fatality was the bomber himself.

This occurred in 1985, so I can understand why the ticket attendant didn't have the same thoughts we would have, present day. No x-ray machines either? Wow. It's astonishing more tragedies did not happen.
My, how times have changed. If a customer threw a hissy fit like that at a ticket agent today, TSA would tackle him, hogtie him, and carry him off to an interrogation room while waiting for the Federalies to come take him away.
