Paul McCartney is one of the greatest singers of all time. The song "Oh Darling" is proof. The man can sing anything and blow you away each time. Welcome to the genius of The Beatles. This is why they're still loved 50 years later. No one like them before or since.
John was always critical of their work. He claimed he should have sung lead here. It's a matter of taste, Paul does a good job and John would have done it just as well. It was about John being an incurably disaffected visionary rather than rivalry.
@@dennislindqvist8443 John used to do things and then later trash it all, it was just what he did, how he was. I believe (from what I've read/watched/heard) that anyone who knew him never took offense when he trashed stuff they'd done because if you didn't like what he'd said then ask him again later that day and you'd get a different opinion. Personally I think Paul was by far the better singer in the group. John used to do the strong vocals earlier and Paul the more melodic stuff, so Lennon would think he should've done this, but by this time Paul was doing a stronger vocal than John. So I think it was spot on as it was. None of them did any real harm, they have provided more joy to the world than misery, and they all deserve a special place in history for that. Long live The Beatles... the group that - to this day - all others are judged by.
My 16 yr old son was just starting to get into The Beatles when I bought the Abby Road CD for him. When I gave it to him he asked, "Is it any good?" I nearly fell out of my chair laughing.
IMO Paul's bass playing is at its absolute peak on this album. (Lady Madonna and Hey Bulldog also have excellent bass playing but every song on this album that has bass, has just outstanding bass.)
Ringo is a f'in genius drummer. He doesn't try to overwhelm - he is brilliant because he is so sparse. Anyone else would have overplayed the shit out of those songs.
One of THE most difficult things about drumming is staying right on the beat - flawlessly. This is why Ringo was the perfect drummer for the Beatles. Could you really imaging Neil Pert playing for the Beatles music? It wouldn't work.
@@iShootFast Ringo absolutely is a metronome; however, George Martin said that he would speed up or slow down in some songs, but he did it purposefully, when it was needed for the song. Hitting that high Little Richard “wooooo” at the end- perfect touch by Paul, honoring one of his idols. Richard once said Paul was the only one who could do justice to his trademark. One of the rawest, most powerful vocals ever laid down.
Yep, it was Paul on this one. John has a similar tone to his voice in “Twist and Shout”. But Paul’s voice could belt out “Oh Darling”, and then turn around and sing a song like “Yesterday”. You should listen to Paul sing “Long Tall Sally” as well for more of this.
To this day he credits Richard for his vocal range. The Beatles got to meet a lot of their idols but Little Richard was one of the few who actually embraced them. They opened for one of Richard's tours in Europe in the early 60's and during the tour he helped Paul find his range.
I have a favorite song that’s been the same for a while, but throughout their career they sound like 3 different bands and it’s amazing how much variety there is.
Paul wrote this as an homage to one of his and John’s idols, Fats Domino, with the triplets on the piano. When people in south Louisiana first heard this song, many assumed it was a local artist because of it’s swamp pop sound.
The Beatles, greatest rock-n-roll band of all time............not even arguable! This masterpeice was released in 1969 on their "Abbey Road" record. Paul McCartney sang lead vocals.
Every song is different and as good as the last. There is a reason they're considered the best. The Beatles will last forever. It brings me joy when I see someone else come along for the ride✌
Dude, The Beatles have been played to death for a lot of us from that era. That said, watching your reactions has brought them into a new light for me. I love your enthusiasm for this music. It is really making old music fun again. Thank you!!
Exactly how I feel. I don't think this song ever sounded as awesome as it just did watching his reaction! I was actually really listening to it closely and it was phenomenal. Like the Beatles.
Paul McCartney came in to the studio early for about a week to develop and finally deliver the vocal performance heard here. He kept stretching the boundaries of his vocal abilities till, after many days, it was just right. John Lennon loved Oh! Darling. His guitar work here is impeccable. John also felt he should've been the one to lead sing the song. His voice is quite prominent in the banks of oohs & aahs that John, Paul and George provide to embellish the verses. Paul McCartney's last truly "Great Song" as a Beatle. Great reaction HB. Best wishes, RNB
Hey G A, Oh Darling was recorded after the 2 songs you mention here. I was speaking chronologically, as a Beatles recording. It was first attempted in late April of 1969. But not completed till August 11, 1969. 7 months after the Let It be sessions wrapped. I hope that clears things up. Cheers, RNB
Paul lived right down the street from the recording studio in those days, and when he did "Oh Darling", he went in almost every morning for about two weeks until he got the vocal just the way he wantesd it. He went in during the morning, so he could have that early morning rasp in his voice.
McCartney has a Chameleon of a voice. He is known as "The Voice", and has a multitude of ranges. John has some pretty songs but mostly balls rock songs. Paul can rock the RnB and blues numbers like this and do the avante guarde stuff he was known for like what he did for the music on TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS with the tape loops.

Paul is my favorite singer of all time and he’s even better live than in the studio. When you listen to the Wings over America album it’s crazy how he will sing in his fantastic mature rock voice and then two songs later he uses his delicate sweet “Yesterday” voice and sounds 22 years old again. Such a joy. There is an early solo song by Paul McCartney called “Oh Woman, Oh Why”. The vocals are similar. Also, try “Birthday” from the White Album.
I love when Paul does this kind of stuff and he's so good at it. It makes you think that it's throat would just be ruined but man the guy's been singing for decades so he learned how to do it more or less right. But I also absolutely love the backing vocals, especially in that final verse, which would be John and George. If you listen closely, not only are they beautiful Harmony lines, the way they switch up their vowel sounds and the way they do it, it's just so creative but it fits perfectly without stealing anything away from the phenomenal and tortured lead vocal line.

@felex dacat oh very funny. What's that got to do with making a mistake on writing the number of people whom watched the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show? I thought I'd seen somewhere it was the number I wrote. Anyway, why don't you learn to be nice to people? Don't reply, I don't deal with people like you. Bye
I’m having a good time listening to your reaction to this. Welcome to the Beatles!! Yup, Paul Baby could do this without blinking. And Johnny Boy could nail it as well although Paul could hit those high notes and really hold them there. I see that quite a few people have offered other suggestions in the line of Oh Darling. Paul was more than a balladeer and John was more than a psychedelic surrealist. A lot of people don’t realize that John, Paul and George played 8 hr gigs every night in Hamburg week after week. They were wearing black leather pants and jackets and playing kick butt rock and roll way back. Anyway, glad u discovered Oh Darling.
“It keeps getting better and better...” you’re just getting started, bro. Even their really young material is genius. McCartney still tours, still sings this song, still is enthusiastic and STILL sounds amazing! Check out his post Beatles career, Wings. One of the biggest bands of the 70s
I saw McCartney a few years back and he and his band were amazing! He didn't have an opening act and played the entire 3 hours or so! He did 3 encores and we still wanted more! I can't believe how energetic he still is, but he's very health conscious. I have great love and respect for all of the Fab Four, but if I were forced to pick a favorite, it would be Paul. Excellent bass player, and multi-instrumentalist and I love all of his post-Beatles solo and Wings output, too!
I would have given anything to see a Wings Over America concert. Many of the lucky souls that were there still say they gave the best live show of all time. Wings had just broken up before I was born 🥺
Also Kansas City. Although if we start throwing down song titles that capture their versatility and vocal power we better start pulling up the bar stools and start pouring the drinks. We’ll be here for years...
It’s always difficult to pick your favorite Beatles song but for me, this is it. Powerful, raw and sheer genius! I love how you are finding more and more from their catalog that you enjoy. Keep ‘em coming!
Idk why but I get so happy seeing your reactions to this music for the first time, I suggest I’ve Got A Feeling to the which has Paul sing in the beginning and then in the middle switches to John and then both sing
When it comes to a song, with a head and a tail, that's brougt with passion and full comittment ,played to perfection, that moves you and makes you sing along, there's nothing better than this. There's just nothing like the Beatles. :-)
5:24 YES! Listen to John's lead vocals on "Twist and Shout." They had done it so many times that day that his voice was worn out, and that is the vocal that was used on the record.
I know, right!!! ALL of their music requires a deep dive. Lol. I have always loved this song. You say what's another one like this? I would suggest "Something", "Can't Buy Me Love", "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You".
I have alot of favorite Beatles songs!! I was about 11 when they came to the USA!! We had never heard anything like them!! And haven't since!! Thus......
Mccartney came into the studio everyday for a week an hour early to sing the vocal until he got his voice to sound how he wanted it. That's no BS. Now that's dedication to your craft.
Paul is often though of as the least rock-heavy of the Beatles, but this song, and some of the earlier rocking ones he sang on (his "I'm Down" and "Birthday", and their cover of "Long Tall Sally") show what a great rock voice he had.
Kansas City is another great cover he really used to rock out on... I can't for the life of me think what album it appeared in, though... I only really remember quite a few scorching hot live performances, from back in the day (maybe even on the Hamburg tapes..?)

If you do a video for every Beatles song, I will watch them all.
ONE OF MY FAVS!
2:40 both you and Paul did a _"woo"_ hahaha and you immediately cackled when you realized it
Paul once said that he went into the studio in the early morning when his voice was still raspy from waking up, to do the vocals for this song.
No he never sings Oh Darling because its a very hard song to sing🤠
I would have given anything to see a Wings Over America concert. Many of the lucky souls that were there still say they gave the best live show of all time. Wings had just broken up before I was born 🥺
You got good taste in music, this is one of my favorite Beatles songs
Paul sings his fuckin heart out in this one! If you like it when they whooo and scream you should definitely check out Twist and Shout!
When it comes to a song, with a head and a tail, that's brougt with passion and full comittment ,played to perfection,
that moves you and makes you sing along, there's nothing better than this. There's just nothing like the Beatles. :-)
what the hell are you trying to say??? meaningless nonsense !
This is one of my favorites.
This is REAL MUSIC!!

Priceless reaction man! This is how I feel when I listen to any Beatles songs, best band ever
This is still my reaction after hearing this song more than a thousand times
The greatest Beatles song, no doubt
