My parents were born in Calabria, and I’ve been going back ever since. I speak the dialect and have many cousins and family I visit there. I’ve never felt unsafe or scared, from walking around villages at 4am in the morning to leaving my belongings on the beach full view. This might be because the locals know my family, even though I am a ‘ straniera’. From my experience (many times we’ve travelled and lived there) people don’t get drunk blind or off their heads to have fun, so less violence and disorderly behavior. If you don’t act like an idiot and be street smart, you’ll have no problems.
I’m 15 and my dream is to move to calabria ❤ thanks for these videos I see so much negativity when people talk about Italy but you really show the beauty of it all 💕
I really like your method of using comparisons and gives a good context for viewers and helps me better understand the (relative) crime level in Calabria. Thank you
I agree on everything you said on the video, except on a couple of things. The absence (or very little presence) of the drug addiction problem is not due to the mafia controlling the drug market, rather to the population living mostly in small towns, where everybody know each other so the risk of alienation or other troubles that could lead to addiction is little. Still, I personally know people who had addiction problems even in Calabria, of course they are very very few compared to other places

My dad is from a small village in Calabria and I was thinking of buying a home but they are really run down - then I thought maybe Reggio would be better. We were there this past summer (2023) for a day and I really liked the vibe of the city. Plus you have access to the trains and the airport which is much better than the village where you don't have access unless you drive a car. I've never felt unsafe in Calabria. I know the Mafia exists but if you mind your own business I don't think it would be a problem. But like you said they know who to target and if you own a business or even farm land then I think you may have issues. It's quite sad as the area is beautiful but people are either scared to go there or just don't consider it a place to visit because they have heard all the stories of the Mafia. Very sad for the youth cause there is such a lack of jobs and as much as many of them would like to stay they all go North to work. The Mafia is everywhere - I live in Canada and the gangs were under control when the Mafia had power now not so much and the gangs are all over the place causing problems. Very good explanation about Calabria. Just as I thought about Mafia and Calabria in General. I lived in New York in the late 80's and early 90's. I was robbed in front of Columbia Univ but never in Times Square. Calabria may not be as glamorous as Times Square, but, some similarities in terms of Mafia protection.
I just read about a family who had a farm in calabria and was very happy there ( some decades ago I think) then had to flee because of the mafia. Very sad. I wonder if you could open a business or farm there without having to deal with the maffia in Calabria or other southern regions.
I am interested in visiting Calabria particular to Bianchi and Gagliano for a genealogy/roots trip where my wife's ancestors lived in there 1890's before they came to North America and eventually to Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Any input about those two small places would be appreciated.

Another fantastic video Lilly! Great information. One of my tests for neighborhood safety is this.... what would happen to your car or home if you left the doors unlocked at night? If the answer is nothing then you are good to go! I hope that in the land of my ancestors the answer would be nothing.
My parents leave their house open all the time :-) But they live in a small town, so it is very safe. If you live in bigger towns, I don’t know how I would feel about leaving my door open. It is not extremely dangerous but you never know.
Mafia is a lobby, it's like a dictatorship, there is no petty crime in Calabria, but there is also no development except tourism and agriculture. Also there are differences within the region. The province of Reggio is definitely the most affected by organised crime, therefore by racketing and quality of services, Cosenza the least affected and probably the easiest where to open a business.
Yes totally agree. It protects from crime but it stunts any growth or development. I love cosenza it’s a great town and still have to go to Reggio. I love where we are on socerato area. Not too much mafia just enough lol

I would prefer gangs crime than mafia crime. Mafia is more dangerous in any level. You can't open a shop without pay protection money. This stops the economy and if you denounce them you are died or you will not have no more life. So for me it's worst in Calabria
@@CalabriaDreaming I answered you now... Mmmm, no, Unfortunately it is not a myth, maybe where you live mafia doesn't ask money for small shops, but in my city it is. Foreigners that buy there have no clue, everyone wants to run away from there! Why? Go to the north for better opportunities and life. If you have kids do not go to the south. My father took my sister and l away from there when we were young because you have no future in the south of Italy. All my cousins went north for work. There is no investment and poor education. I don't recommend you talk about these issues either for your own safety. Good luck. From a calabrian.
@CalabriaDreaming obviously you can't read because l am a born calabrese (from Reggio) as mentioned. 2 you have very poor manners and as someone who runs a business, it is a joke you speak to people this way. You have lived there for 6 years and now you are an expert? This is not a place to live unless you are retired with no kids. Why anyone would buy there when italy is literally dying (youth leaving) is crazy, especially in the south. You should speak the truth about the area. If you can't handle others opinions when they are just being honest, don't be on social media. Anyway makes no difference to me what you think. All the best 👍

But the term is 'ndrangheta, not mafia.
briganti is another name😂😂
I'm subscribe your channel I'm from Pakistan I download the forum of job can you tell me how to apply for it
Philly still the same probably worse .I live in the suburb of Philly and you here about shooting every day in the news.I go there for the restaurants and the bakeries that is all .Intertament is not worth it there anymore ,to much crime.
Wow that’s still going on in philly? Last i was there it was all gentrified and hipster!! But yea west philly was no joke back in the early 2000s. Stay safe my friend! Compared to philly this place is a piece of cake
I would prefer gangs crime than mafia crime. Mafia is more dangerous in any level. You can't open a shop without pay protection money. This stops the economy and if you denounce them you are died or you will not have no more life. So for me it's worst in Calabria
Yea but I’ve never heard or seen any of that here. The mafia here is discrete and doesn’t come after small businesses. So that’s a myth
@@CalabriaDreaming I answered you now... Mmmm, no, Unfortunately it is not a myth, maybe where you live mafia doesn't ask money for small shops, but in my city it is. Even those who sell sandwiches on the street (at village festivals) are asked for money. Non so se ho scritto bene in inglese, aiutandomi con il traduttore
Let's be grateful that there is nothing in the news, because there is a good chance it won't be a good one!!!!
🌻🌻🌻🌻
Yes exactly Regina!!! Left you a vm right now. It’s raining cats and dogs!
India is the safest country in the world you ever think of... The Indian Army is the best army after US and it's ranked 2nd in the world... So, in india mostly in westbengal beautiful i must say ❤
I went to Mumbai and definitely do not think it was safe. So very dangerous and so much poverty.
@@CalabriaDreaming Mumbai is not safe I'll talk about West Bengal Kolkata
@@CalabriaDreaming And Mumbai, delhi is not safe in india If you want to know which is the safest place i must say west bengal Lot's of lovely culture and peoples are there ❤

La mia famiglia è a Mon grassano... Sei bella xx
come to India you loved it 😊
I have been before and I do want to go back but it was a little scary at the time
Foreigners that buy there have no clue, everyone wants to run away from there!
Clearly you have never lived here so you should shut up. You know absolutely nothing
@@stefanochiriaco6175 born and lived in two different things baby. You are talking shit about calabria and it’s clear you have no clue. Fuck off please. Bye
You aren't doing yourself any favours, LOL! Just showing others who you are, keep up the great work! 👍
@@stefanochiriaco6175 hey loser guess whaaaaat. I could give two shits about what you think but I don’t. Ciao go back to your dumb life and stop calling yourself Calabrian bc you don’t know anything. Definitely do t come here
Temple? Grad then I guess
Yes, Calabria is dangerous.
That’s ridiculous no it’s not
rågsved has always been much worse than högdalen. compared to rågsved högdalen and hagsätra is safe.
Haha you know it well!! Yes I’m sure there are worse than högdalen but when I was growing up back in the 80s it was a ghetto. Hej from us in Calabria
@@CalabriaDreaming yes but now it doesn't matter anymore because there's shootings everyday somewhere in stockholm. the gang violence has escalated insanely these past couple of years. i would say today stockholm and malmö are no longer safe cities. it's out of control. the image the outside world has always had of sweden is gone. shoutout to söderort 124 :)
@@funkmachine9094 yup I hear the same things. My friends on both Stockholm and in skåne say the sane. It’s a damned shame bc I truly had a great childhood back in the day. Sad to know that it is not the same

@@CalabriaDreaming actually yes i agree !!!!
I dream i reached clabria can u helip me. No mony problem
Hey there! Get either a student or business visa! I made a video about it!
lets make it clear the mafia is SHIT . Calabria would be a rich province if they allowed more business in the region . If that f........g underground shit didn't exist it would be a very very rich province . Plus many of the farms in Calabria are abandoned the young kids move north that is why Calabria stays poor in comparison to the rest of Italy .
Yes the mafia has don’t a lot to stifle the growth but also in a way to preserve it. Do you live here in Calabria too?
@Double Scarred yes the mafia really stunts any growth or development but the crime here is nothing compared to other parts of Italy. Milan and Florence are crazy right now. I feel grateful to be here even with all the problems. I think Calabria will be very different in the next ten years
@@CalabriaDreaming different how in the next 10 years?
I would totally move there. But there's no good jobs. What do you do anyway? I'm in the concrete business
Video on how to make money here coming soon!
