7 1/2 Days in a Road Train - Part 3 of 5

- n Part 3, I leave Camooweal which is the last town in Queensland before the Queensland Northern Territory Border before finally arriving at Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory. As I cross the Barkly you will see plenty of water near the road and evidence of where the road was closed to traffic at times. It was a cold shower for me at the Barkly Homestead before I made my way to Three Ways for the night.
Part 3 is the third installment of a 5 part series of videos that shows the detour I had to take in February 2022 to transport freight in a triple Road Train from Adelaide in South Australia to Darwin in the Northern Territory.
The Government had granted triple Road Trains supplementary access for 28 days to the Northern Territory via Burra in South Australia through New South Wales coming out at the bottom of Queensland. This was only ever a double Road Train route, triple Road Trains were not normally allowed on these roads.
I have taken my camera gear along with me on this seven and a half day road trip in a triple Road Train to film as much of the floods and journey that I thought might be of some interest to anyone. At the time of leaving Adelaide in South Australia, it was still raining along some of the roads that I would travel on causing road closures along the way. As I moved from State to State, I could only hope that these temporary road closures would not cause me to sit stationary waiting for areas to dry out so that I could continue.

Another great video Mick!! Can’t believe how green it was across the Barkly!! We crossed West to East in 2015 as part of our 12 month lap of Australia trip, you could count the number of green blades of grass we saw on one hand it was just so dry!

Seems alot of work still needs to be done in some parts of the national hwy around this great country of ours.The Federal and State/Territory governments should really be on top of the black spots by now to keep the country running.There's very little shoulder in some parts I see also.Not good enough for me for the huge transporters that come through on a daily basis.Very little room for error in 2022 still.
None the less,still great to see these videos of yours.Awesome riding shotgun with you mate.Great to be an aussie and very proud and appreciative of this great country of ours.

Great footage Mick!! When I was young I went from Mildura to Sydney and back across thru Cobar, Wicannia a couple of times. Once after there had been heavy rains and the number of kangaroos and feral pigs astounded me. That will be one thing you will have to deal with!! Take care.

Thanks Greg, apart from goats I didn't see very much wildlife. When Sally and I were around Longreach during the drought there was that much dead road kill the smell was bad all the time while driving from point A to point B.

Great video Mick, I really do enjoy watching them. My dad was an owner driver when I was younger (43 now), I loved going on road trips across our beautiful country on school holidays. I've been in the Aviation sector since I left school and nearly lost my job during the pandemic, I went and got my HR ticket, worked as a casual driving tippers for a year and just recently got my HC ticket. Even though my full time work has returned I've got the bug and recently got casual employment at Rapid Haulage, soon I'll get my MC, can't wait! I do 4on4off so I'm lucky enough to be able to moonlight. Keep up the great work, really appreciate your effort!

As far as detours go that one takes the cake. Might help some overseas fans understand how big this joint is - & what a landscape!!
Basically the same size as mainland USA - but due to population (?) many don't realise we are a tad larger than Tasmanis. These videos help with that perspective.

Unfortunately my bedding is of a darker colour so it wouldn't film very well for me on this trip, perhaps next time.

I'm retired now was great to see Darwin again was home for 3yrs, then was up there when ACCO beef plant was built don't think it is still running now was part of the build.
I could be wrong but I have heard that they are yet to process the first animal at the sight since it was built.

Plenty of time to get used to it all. What may seem difficult to some is easy to others that are doing it all the time.
Have ever done a video about the Daly river and it’s fishing fishing spots. I have traveled this road of Adelaide to Darwin. I follow your journeys- happy travels always
Only ever been out in the Daly River area once with the caravan many years ago, so no I haven't done a video from that area.

I am lost out here,
Far out in this terrible country.
On the outer Barcoo
where the churches are few
and the showers are cold and runty ('r' in runty should be 'c').
My poor 'ole mate Mick,
who even though he's 3 unit roadtrain equipped,
is often with country towns aggrieved.
Lack of legible bypass route signs,
cause our driver much angst and malign
that our truckie to the verge of sanity is borderline!🙃
Someone has too much spare time.
The Threeways not a great place to get out of your vehicle if its been wet as it’s Mosquito Hell. I’ve never seen so many, got woke up in the dark wondering what the noise was and turned the headlights on and could barely see out the truck for mosquitoes attacking the glass trying to get in. Had to drive out of the rest stop and head further on the. Get out and have a stretch etc.
I should add that these weren’t your normal size mosquitoes these were the F-111 version🤣🤣
This trip was the first and only time I have ever camped at Three Ways. Any time that we have stopped there although that isn't very often I haven't noticed any F-111 versions about.
Thanks for the video Mick. You were saying Adelaide River is a popular spot of yours and I was wondering if the old sign at the entrance to the show grounds was still there. The sign was ARSS (Adelaide River Show Society) and it was a banner style sign over the top of the entrance. The last time I saw it was in 1979 when I used to do tours in the Territory. Quite a few of my passengers used to get a chuckle when I pointed the sign out to them.
I will have to check it out for you next trip up there. I am assuming it is on the south entrance, am I correct?
@@justcruisinwithmicksally837 Hi Mick, from memory it is just south of the river on a side road to the left if you're heading north - not triple friendly. If you're up there in your caravan they have a caravan park at the show grounds

Hi Mick, I am new subscriber and enjoy your videos. Just a small suggestion, if you can make the camera angle to see how you steer along with the view of the road while you drive, that would be little more interesting. :)
The idea sounds good but I am not too sure how and where I can mount a camera to capture the idea.
Reminds me of a trip I did many years ago in the very late '70's, coming back from Darwin with my youngest brother, we crossed the NT/Qld Border at Camooweal and didn't even know it, there was no big Border sign back then, just a small 3x3 sign on a ten foot post, saying, I think, "You are leaving the Northern Territory" and cruising past it at 70 mph, as there was no real legal speed limit in the Northern Territory back then, you sort of had to guess what that sign said, we hit Camooweal and that's when we actually knew we were in Queensland. and had to change our watches and car clock forward the half hour.
Those were the days mate, even now there isn't a great tourist sign like there could be.
Thanks for the ride Mick. You mention cattle and I saw some along the way....have any ever stepped out and if so what is your modus operandi? We had to be cautious when caravanning in the outback....the old roo bar would certainly have been tested!
Cattle were not a real issue on this trip. One Adelaide to Darwin trip many years ago I managed to hit 4 cows at the same time, minimal damage to the truck but rolled my 2-up partner out of his bunk and cracked a couple of his ribs. All that we can do when cattle wonder out in front of us is to slow down and hang on for the best.
Spent many a night at Barkly Homestead, back in the 1980's when I was carting ATCO Donga's I would turn right there and go via Cape Crawford , if got there around mid afternoon I would get to 3Ways only and that's be it for the day, so going via Cape Crawford in the dark..(naughty eh) one could get to the Highway Inn for a sleep .
The days of trucking years ago hey Doug, those were the days.

Really enjoying the videos, it's amazing to see Australia, the place I dreamt of going to as a child, and now nearly 60 and still never been there, Interesting that there is a 100kph speed limit, I've heard of roads in the NT with no speed limit, is this still the case? Or is it just the trucks that are limited?
Few years ago it got changed to 130kmh due to deaths on the road I could be wrong though
Trucks are limited to the 100kpm but cars have an open road speed limit of 130kph. Glad you are enjoying the videos Steve, thanks.
Yes Jayden, it was an open speed limit and when there was a change of government the 130kph limit was reintroduced.

Didn't look at the fuel prices while there. It is an isolated location so one would expect the price to be in the upper level.
Great video Mick. How do you deal with moments of tiredness? Ie if you're partway through a driving shift or maybe just started driving your shift and you realise you're more tired than you should be. Many thanks for the videos. They're great watching.
There are two ways that we handle tiredness. The first is to stop the truck and get out and walk around while checking the trailers but if we are really tired, then we will ask the other person to take over for a while while we have a power dose.

Nice area. Like the description of the areas you go through. Your country roads look like the ones in Mexico. IE minimal shoulder and drop off at edge. In Canada we have gravel or paved shoulders wide enough to allow a car to get fully off the road without going in the ditch.
Glad you like the video David. Some of our roads that allow you to get off of the road are a trap if it is wet as you get bogged in the material that was used to build up the shoulders.

It is a National Heavy Vehicle Regulator policy. As I am South Australian based, I must by law follow their regulations no matter what State or Territory I am driving in.

Yes we do have driving and rest times that we must by law follow. We need to plan ahead to make sure that there is a location that we can use for our required rest periods.
About how many trucks would you pass in a hour going the other way? How often is there a pull out where you can park and be not be afraid of getting stuck if you get tired? Certainly not much shoulders on the roads as most roads here in Canada. Thx for doing the videos
We pass different amounts of trucks depending on the time and day of the week. On a Friday night closer to Adelaide there are all of the end of week trucks that have left Adelaide late Friday heading for Darwin. Pull in areas depend on where you are at any one time, for most areas there are not enough of them. Anywhere from one hour to two hours at times.
@@justcruisinwithmicksally837 when I drove in the USA, they have very nice rest areas about every hour at least in the places I drove. In Canada not nearly as much. East to west not to bad but when heading north, smaller roads and much less services. Lots of trucks east to west but much less heading north unless there is a forestry or oil industry in the area. Some very scenic areas in both the US and Canada.

How much so you pay for fuel along the trip? I am now 2 months in Australia and it went from 1,60 unleaded in VIC in early january to 1,90 /1,98 in TAS and Melbourne now.
The fuel along the trip is all charged to an account, the cost of which I have no idea.

I take all of my own meals. Some are cold meats and salad as well as that Sally cooks up some meal hot packs that I eat after heating in a 12 volt oven. For this trip I ran 2 fridges, one as a freezer and the other as a normal fridge.
Why didn't you stop for a "Paddy" Pie at Larrimah?
We go through there during the dark hours as well as taking all of our own food.
Was that a " Subbie" with the 3 ABC road train at the Barkly homestead?
Yes it was. The Northern Territory required as much freight as possible and as soon as possible so possibly not enough trucks and drivers for ABC to fill all requirements without the assistance of Subbies.

Some grids have been removed on various roads. I had a chuckle to myself when I went over two painted grids on the road.

Most drivers within Australia can drive for 14 hours per day. If not 14 then it is only 12 for some.

Great videos Mick, is it possible to tell us about the truck you are driving ?.................obviously a KW, auto or manual??........................and from memory sometimes you are in a Mack.
The Kenworth is an 18 speed manual and yes the Macks that I am in most of the time is a 12 speed auto
Hi guys, I'm 23 year old, have my MC, BFM Cert, but don't have any time driving bdoubles or road trains and would love to get into industry properly, i current driving semis around town in Brisbane, was just wondering how i would go about getting into the industry.
The best way is to get into a transport yard as a yard hand and go from there. If you are any good, your new employer will pick up on it and you will go forward from there.

There was a time when I was driving a Kenworth 610 for a number of trips but the majority of the time I am in a Mack Superliner.

@@varlomovich2015 To be perfectly honest with you I have never driven a Mack Yitan so I can't answer the question for you. I think the Titan has lest luxury fit outs in the cab & bunk but don't hold me to that.
