Definately. In this instance, the warp stabilizer was noticeably active multiple times in the woods. Did you consume too much coffee before speaking to create that much movement? 😅
Everyone has their own way of doing things.... What I love to do is "don't flex, don't show off, don't talk"... just stay quiet and let your own work show what you can do. I love to be silent and smile... never flex, never show off..... just show what you are capable of... I've been in photography business for over 20 years... it has never failed me... I've done lots of free work because I wanted to... and it is the best thing ever
I'm 61 and enjoy video editing. I had the great fortune of connecting with an actor who has been in some major programs and TV movies. She needed a show reel so I offered to take some scenes from the projects she was in and put together a reel for her to her specs. Now she has become a friend and it didn't cost either of us a cent.
Anytime I have started to feel like I am a failure, or just not on-track to have any continued upwards success when it comes to the photo game, I make sure I stop by and catch up on some of your videos... and ones like this remind me that I have been doing things right and I don't have to have 10000% growth and a huge bank roll for every time I pick my camera up. Thank you for being a voice in the industry my man ✌
I do concert photography, and I have a standard rate that I charge for my services. I work with two non-profit theatres in the area that I do not charge for my services, but I do get to see shows that I would have paid to see, the theatres and performers get photos they can use, and I regularly get more work as a result of the contacts I make working for free and the attribution that the theatres and the bands give me when they post my photos on their socials. A new venue opened recently, so I cold-called them and gave them my rate. It was a bit much for the owner, but we negotiated a deal for two shoots that has already led to additional gigs. I don't always work for free, but the Three Bs mentioned in this video are really important, so I don't mind doing it occasionally.
Nah Pete this vid had it all. Some time with the boys, some editing, the classic goofy Peteisms and bloopers and the dab. Hah good to have you back! I’ve shot for free a number of times and honestly I can’t say I’ve ever regretted it. It’s either built me up in some way or made a connection I still hold even now
I started watching your videos in 2018. Always loved it. I started travelling and clicking photos and making films. Never had the courage to start a TH-cam channel. But today, thanks to your constant inspiration and motivation, I have started a TH-cam channel and my first video is out. Thanks again brother. ❤
This is some amazing advice... Ive only been taking photos for 8 months now, but thanks to this magical word "FREE", it has given me the amazing opportunity to shoot bands like the Arkells, and Tokyo Police Club, and some amazing venues like Canada Life Place in London, and History Toronto. Thank you Pete!!
That's a great way to look at work. What is this job doing? Building a bridge, a book or my bank account. Pete, you've surrounded yourself with good men full of great wisdom.
The closest Jordan quote is, "I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." Which is an awesome quote, even if not as succinct as Gretzky
Thank you Pete for the content and most of all, the inspiration. It has been 3 months since we started our video production company. It's been tough and a lot of work so far, and I know it will continue to be tough. We had to do a lot of free work as well to help grow and get a name for ourselves. So this is inspirational. Thank you for your content and keep them coming, brother!
I've been stressing over deciding to quit my thesis and do a practicum, and I think your video is a sign from the universe, telling me that it's the better decision. Your videos always give me inspiration and a boost! I also love learning more about photography from you. ❤
You guys look like you have fun everyday. Man the shots you took with the whisky bottle and the edits to them were amazing. Also, you're right, sometimes, working for free ends up benefitting you in the long run. I was lucky enough to see to witness it myself. It's so gratifying when a client calls and offers you a paid gig after seeing the work you did free of charge! Love the channel man. Please keep 'em coming!
Thanks for the eight years of awesome content. You've helped me from just dumping my camera when times were dark. New year, new drive. I'm not expecting this to become a conversation just want you to know that from your first video I was hooked
Oddly enough what struck me most was seeing hang time with quality friends. That’s priceless. Not every season of life has that gift. I’d rather get paid less and do it with people I care about than have all the money and be alone. Of course, life’s grand when you’ve got both!
Excellent work on all fronts Pete! And yes....I'm where I'm at in my business because I did a lot of free work. That's how you build a portfolio in an uncharted frontier.
I love this video. It's about "chop wood, carry water" if you've read the book. Some of my greatest moments were working for free, putting my ego and pride aside and just learning. Thanks for sharing this! I've been there before and I'm there now.
the intro reminded me exactly why i love this guy. cheers peter. i fell in love with photography because of you in 2017 and it has opened so many doors for me. Much love from New Orleans, Louisiana
Man is always creative with the work what a start to those who had watched the previus video. "It's impontant you do what you love even if your not payed atleast you have the photos" Quote that
A bank within the county, has a competition each year. Photographers of any expertise, can join by submitting their photos of the area to be featured in the bank's calendar. You get paid of course, but the opportunity of traveling for each season is amazing.
.. cause you love photography and you love what are you doing and you have a great confidence in your work and above all you are a real human being ... Kudos
Woah! When you switched from the office to the field I had to pull it up on my larger display. Always love when you get out in the woods with the boys. Cheers.
great advice and great to see peter back enjoying the woods again this video puts me way back to Surviving Alone In The Wilderness and dam that was a amazing video, also dude products shots stunning as always, i draw lots inspiration from you, 8 years strong and many more great one's to come. thanks man
I was laid off from the work I loved recently, yep, just before holidays! Ever since I started to shot photo and video for free. I always give an extra mile, I believe in my work, I am going to continue shot for free - should have done it sooner. Thanks Pete, love the video, love YOU. Perfect timing! Enjoy the holidays 🤟
I run a small computer business myself and almost everyday I help clients out for free and because of that year after year my clientele doubles and I am only 3 years into my business and each year my income has increased. Word of mouth is extremely powerful. That being said I think it also is all based on what you do for a living. Great video Peter !
Great point and awesome to see you back at it again. I enjoy, as probably others enjoy, watching you share the process, production and edits. Thanks Pete!
This is a super interesting conversation, but let’s be completely, bluntly honest: you did get paid, in a way, by the Kiefer photo shoot. That was a massive YT content opportunity that you are then profiting from. None of this is to say any of that is wrong, I think it’s just important to frame the discussion accurately. Just because you shot the pictures for free doesn’t mean you didn’t profit. All of that is in addition to any bridges you built along that encounter, which also has value.
Peter posting!!! I found Peter's channel in 2018, since then I've opened a marketing agency based on photos and videography. Thank you for being my first teacher
Someone from my home town asked me a few days to shoot their wedding. I said I will do it, in my style, if they want me. And I will do it for free. This is my first wedding. Thanks Pete !
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Perfect timing for this one. I took a chance and am working for "free" for the next 2 months. I asked only for a chance, and a place to sleep on the floor at the end of the day. The opportunity to be present, creative, and keep the shutter clicking has been 100% worth it.
I 100% agree! I worked and made videos on products first, without any affiliation, only for the brand to see them and sponsor me long term🙌🏻 Totally worth it.
I feel like all i do is free to the point people expect it . Photographers are always getting screwed and also by doing jobs for free or less it makes it harder for other photographers. Its hard enough for artists as it is , do free to learn and build skills but ince you have the skills get paid !! Value the craft and value yourself ! Pay the bills.
I really liked the flow of this video. It was a great mix of the "adventurous story telling" Peat and the "let me teach you something" Peat. And this is why he is one of my favorite creators on YT.
Not enough people get this concept - almost all of my favorite clients came from giving them something for free to start. Would have never landed Skillet as a client separate from putting in full price effort on something I gave them completely for free.

I love your product shoots. Some of my favourite videos! Yo make them so fun to watch!! Highly appreciated! PS! Love weatherwool Have the Anorak and its perfect in the Norwegian winter!
These videos are always so inspiring. It really reminds the Creatives out there that not every job is going to be paid, but that doesn't matter as long as it creates potential for more work in the future.
You know what? Its a great video, great analogy of working for free sometimes. Even its so much value packed. I dont care about it. I came here to see you, to hangout with you. It just makes me so happy. So good to see you man! It's 9 AM on Tuesday and first thing I did today is, watched you hangout in woods with friends. You just vibe different. Warn and feels so close. Thank you for making these videos. They help me a lot.
This is refreshing Peter, right now i´m in that situation where i´m 6 months as a freelancer filmaker and editor and is so hard to be seen after you´ve worked 20 years for different video companies, i really don´t like to work for free but if i can get closer to the kind of clients i want for growing my craft i think i´m willing to do it, thanks for all your adivises.
I got into photography and video because of the incredible places and people you get to experience, that's what keeps my passion alive. Keep that as your core philosophy and you'll never go wrong. If you enjoy drinking whisky in the woods with your mates then why not shoot some content and help some people out. Expand the portfolio, pic library content and just good times. It's definitely all about balance. 'Givers gain' as they say,
12:25 "When you can pull that out of a photo, you've won". Well, you've won. I would've loved to be out there right now, doing that too. Awesome vibes man.
I enjoyed listening to this explanation of the offering services for free. Recently at a gym where I'm a member, I spoke to the manager about my experience in the field of video production, a decade of buildining a media program, equipping a studio, designing that studio for a company I worked for. I had noted that they put out a lot of media/postings for promotional purposes and was looking for some work. Their production levels are basic, mobile phones are predominately used with basic editing and audio is all from the phones. So I offered pro bono to the manager and left it at that, he didn't commit to anything and all I can hope is that I've sown a seed for the future perhaps. I agree that services offered free creates good will and it comes back to you in many ways. Cheers Graham
Working for free can definitely open doors and create amazing opportunities, but it’s a slippery slope if you’re not careful. I learned this the hard way in my first year of freelancing-it put me in a tough financial spot by too frequently working for exposure.
Although, I do agree -- it's always better to build the relationship (and sometimes do the work for free), but what happens if you literally cannot financially afford to do the work for Free? Also, this is more in reference to the work I do, which is on the Web Development end, not the Photography end.
I think doing what you love for free (occasionally) is more fulfilling than doing what you hate for money! I watched this video and felt excitement and fear (fear usually means, for me, anyway that it's a risk worth taking). I just feel like I am too late in the game, I am 50 years old, I don't have years to build those bridges!
I actually love doing little gigs for free. It’s an opportunity to serve others, to give someone something special, and as you said… potentially a bridge to something bigger.
off topic but that intro was awesome, i miss that peter intro, that intro edit at 45 sec was perfect, also this video just gave me a great idea and motivation to get out in the snow and capture photos with a cowboy hat, cigar and whiskey, love the look
Man!!!… watching Peter after 6 years!❤️… nothing has changed except you got OLD, a bit SLOW, voice is a bit DEEPER and WISER but mann❤️ lolll it’s the same feeling like I’m gonna learn something from this guy!
Like if you want Peter to bring back "editing your photos"
Definately. In this instance, the warp stabilizer was noticeably active multiple times in the woods. Did you consume too much coffee before speaking to create that much movement? 😅
Hell yeah let’s bring it back
Yes please!!!!
Yes! We need those videos.
I loved it!!
The intro genuinely made me laugh, especially when you called me out for smiling then laughing. Legit mind reader.
Everyone has their own way of doing things.... What I love to do is "don't flex, don't show off, don't talk"... just stay quiet and let your own work show what you can do. Working for free is a luxury not everyone can afford to chase after.
You missed the point, entirely. With that attitude - that’s why you can’t afford the luxury.
Just be wise with which jobs you do for free.
calling it now. We'll see 3 more desk moves until he's happy
maybe 4?
let's just call it ADHD and hope for the best!
@@PeterMcKinnonit’s actually 3.5, but it’s only half a move because it turns out to be a position/setup he’s already tried
Don't think he is able to be happy with a setup
Yes. Just before the next 3 desk moves.

No regerts! I have done dozens of free promos for companies and eventually they have contacted me with an opportunity to get paid! Bravo Pete!

6:31 is no one taking about how it is 100% a Wayne Gretzky quote! You were right Pete!
I KNEW IT!!!!!!

I don't have a problem with artists offering to work for free. I just have a problem with clients asking artists to work for free.
That the biggest problem, with free or cheap labor
You guys look like you have fun everyday. Man the shots you took with the whisky bottle and the edits to them were amazing.
Also, you're right, sometimes, working for free ends up benefitting you in the long run. I was lucky enough to see to witness it myself. It's so gratifying when a client calls and offers you a paid gig after seeing the work you did free of charge!

I've been asking this question for years. This is the best conversation I've ever heard on this topic. Thank you!
Can’t thank you enough for sharing this. Your humility is admirable.
Woah! When you switched from the office to the field I had to pull it up on my larger display. Always love when you get out in the woods with the boys. Cheers.

I can’t stop watching this, amazing quality Peter!!
Great point and awesome to see you back at it again. I enjoy, as probably others enjoy, watching you share the process, production and edits. Thanks Pete!
Hey! I really appreciate how you mix up the environment and perspective. It keeps everything fresh and exciting!
Peter you are such an inspiration !! ❤❤❤❤

Take Kiefer out of it. I was doing the same thing 20 years ago without the platform. Points still stand. Three B's baby.
Cheers to eight years! Found your channel in 2018 and been nothing but a joy to watch since. :)
Miss this type of videos. Thank you for sharing your expertise.
I just let a job go, and took an internship with the VFW. I feel that I can contribute more to society by helping them.
Please do more with trustintimber! I love the cinematic bushcraft clips and photos.
He's the greatest
Peter posting!!! I found Peter's channel in 2018, since then I've opened a marketing agency based on photos and videography. Thank you for being my first teacher

8 years and I have found a reason to like and rewatch like every single video on here. 🔥🔥
Love the balance of vlog and tutorial. More of these, please! 🔥
Love seeing the editing process!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Perfect timing for this one. I took a chance and am working for "free" for the next 2 months. I asked only for a chance, and a place to sleep on the floor at the end of the day. The opportunity to be present, creative, and keep the shutter clicking has been 100% worth it.
Love every bit of this
I 100% agree! I worked and made videos on products first, without any affiliation, only for the brand to see them and sponsor me long term🙌🏻 Totally worth it.
at a very low point watching this and this video is what i needed ig
i will come back in a year and strong
an og fan you are an inspiration
€500 for a jacket is another world even with 15 percent off, until I can afford it, I'll just watch this video and imagine having one😅
I feel like all i do is free to the point people expect it . Photographers are always getting screwed and also by doing jobs for free or less it makes it harder for other photographers. The amount I want that beaver neon sign is crazy. Amazing video as always!
I really liked the flow of this video. It was a great mix of the "adventurous story telling" Peat and the "let me teach you something" Peat. And this is why he is one of my favorite creators on YT.
That's very nice to hear. Thank you!
I agree. Noticeably good flow.
How I feel about this........... If I am making money from other sources, there is no problem with free work, honestly. I agree
I'm not crying ... you're crying!!
beautiful shots; texture is everything!
This was so good. Like a warm blanket on a snowy day. Just sank into the warmth and enjoyed the video! Thanks!
Love the outtakes!
Not enough people get this concept - almost all of my favorite clients came from giving them something for free to start. Would have never landed Skillet as a client separate from putting in full price effort on something I gave them completely for free.
lol haven't watched him for a while! LOL he is old like sh/t
New angle looks good!
I charge for my services but I also do free test shoot with agency models. Your perspective is so refreshing regarding product photography in usage! So inspiring. Thank you for sharing!
Loved this video. Thanks for sharing Pete.
Any other youtuber and I would have clicked away after 30 seconds of absolutely nothing. Pete is the GOAT
I like how the one dude said he could not have a jacket, but the other guy sent em’ one off camera and he pomoted his whole brand for it. Given Pete’s platform, wise and genuine gesture.
Goes back to the whole lesson of this video, ghuess that one guy didn’t understand the message. lol
I love your product shoots. Some of my favourite videos! Yo make them so fun to watch!! Highly appreciated! PS! Love weatherwool Have the Anorak and its perfect in the Norwegian winter!
Awesome! Love this shoot!!

Love the product photography vids! Great tips. Thanks!
Those who work for free will always have work (and an ever increasing pile of unpaid bills).
Mattie clicked out in .0030 sec as soon as he realize that all his hard work go to waste 😂
Just kidding Pete love your videos
This video is so wholesome! Love the edit tips. And that whiskey looks right at home by that camp fire.
thanks Peet for inspiring me again and again ❤
I got into photography and video because of the incredible places and people you get to experience, that's what keeps my passion alive. Keep that as your core philosophy and you'll never go wrong. That's really awesome and lots of fun. What a great video!
Thanx Pete....Such Inspiration You Are 🔥

Welcome back old Peter , love it!! 🤗
Want more of those product photography stuffs on this channel like old days ❤
Peter: you need work for free.
Also Peter: sponsor of this video...
It looks great! Much better.

off topic but that intro was awesome, i miss that peter intro, that intro edit at 45 sec was perfect, also this video just gave me a great idea and motivation to get out in the snow and capture photos with a cowboy hat, cigar and whiskey, love the look
Been saying "no REGERTS" for years, I was done when y'all say it! Love the video as always!
Man!!!… watching Peter after 6 years!❤️… nothing has changed except you got OLD, a bit SLOW, voice is a bit DEEPER and WISER but mann❤️ lolll it’s the same feeling like I’m gonna learn something from this guy!
13:17 "there's smoke all the time pete" 😂😂😂😂
